¹Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.

¹Zopet se zgodi nekega dne, da pridejo sinovi Božji postavit se pred GOSPODA, in pride tudi satan med njimi, da se postavi pred GOSPODA.

²And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

²In GOSPOD reče satanu: Odkod si prišel? Satan pa odgovori GOSPODU in reče: Po zemlji sem letal semtertja in vseokrog jo obhajal.

³And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

³In GOSPOD reče satanu: Si li opazoval hlapca mojega Joba? Kajti njemu ni na zemlji enakega, mož je popoln in pošten, ki se boji Boga in varuje hudega; in še se drži popolnosti svoje! Ti pa si me nadražil zoper njega, da ga uničim brez vzroka.

⁴And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

⁴A satan odgovori GOSPODU in reče: Kožo za kožo, in vse, kar ima človek, da za življenje svoje.

⁵But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

⁵Pa le iztegni roko svojo in se dotakni njegovega okostja in mesa, gotovo se ti v obraz tebe odreče!

⁶And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

⁶Nato veli GOSPOD satanu: Glej, v tvoji je roki, samo življenje mu ohrani!

⁷So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

⁷In ven je šel satan izpred obličja GOSPODOVEGA, in udaril je Joba s hudimi tvori od stopal do temena.

⁸And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

⁸In Job vzame čepinjo, da bi se ž njo praskal, in sede sredi pepela.

⁹Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

⁹Tedaj mu reče žena njegova: Ali se še držiš popolnosti svoje? Odpovej se Bogu in umri!

¹⁰But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

¹⁰On pa ji reče: Govoriš kakor nespametne ženske. Dobro smo li sprejeli od Boga, a ne sprejmemo naj tudi hudega? Pri vsem tem ni grešil Job z ustnicami svojimi.

¹¹Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

¹¹Ko so pa slišali trije prijatelji Jobovi o vsej tej nesreči, ki ga je bila zadela, pridejo vsak iz kraja svojega: Elifaz Temančan, Bildad Šuhec in Zofar Naamatec, in se dogovore, da ga pojdejo skupaj milovat in tolažit.

¹²And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

¹²In ko so oddaleč povzdignili oči, ga niso spoznali; in zaženo svoj glas ter plakajo, in vsak raztrga obleko svojo in si potrese prahu na glavo proti nebu.In sedeli so ž njim na tleh sedem dni in sedem noči, in nihče mu ni govoril besede, zakaj videli so, da je njegova bolest silno velika.

¹³So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
