¹Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

¹In prišla je beseda GOSPODOVA Jonu, sinu Amitajevemu, govoreč:

²Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

²Vstani, pojdi v Ninive, mesto veliko, in kliči zoper njega; kajti njih zloba je prišla gori predme.

³But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

³Ali Jona vstane, da bi zbežal v Tarsis izpred obličja GOSPODOVEGA; in gre doli v Jafo in zaloti ladjo, ki se je peljala v Tarsis; in plača brodnino in stopi vanjo, da bi se peljal ž njimi v Tarsis izpred obličja GOSPODOVEGA.

⁴But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

⁴A GOSPOD je zagnal močan veter na morje, in nastal je velik vihar na morju, da je hotelo ladjo razbiti.

⁵Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

⁵In mornarji se zboje in vpijejo vsak k svojemu bogu; in mečejo v morje orodje, ki je bilo na ladji, da bi si olajšali. Jona pa je bil šel na dno ladje in je legel in trdno zaspal.

⁶So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

⁶Tedaj pristopi k njemu poveljnik ladje in mu reče: Kaj je s tabo, zaspanec? Vstani, kliči k svojemu Bogu! morebiti se nas spomni tvoj Bog, da ne poginemo.

⁷And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

⁷In reko drug drugemu: Pridite, mečimo kocke, da zvemo, zavoljo koga nas je zadela ta nadloga. In mečejo kocke, in kocka pade na Jona.

⁸Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

⁸Tedaj mu reko: Povej nam, prosimo, zavoljo česa nas je zadela ta nadloga? Kakšno je tvoje opravilo in odkod si prišel? Katera je tvoja dežela in iz katerega si ljudstva?

⁹And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

⁹In jim reče: Hebrejec sem, in bojim se GOSPODA, Boga nebes, ki je naredil morje in suhoto.

¹⁰Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him. Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

¹⁰Tedaj prevzame može velik strah, in mu reko: Čemu si to storil? Vedeli so namreč možje, da je zbežal izpred obličja GOSPODOVEGA, ker jim je bil povedal.

¹¹Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

¹¹In ga vprašajo: Kaj hočemo storiti s teboj, da se morje pomiri proti nam? Kajti morje je vedno bolj divjalo.

¹²And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

¹²In jim reče: Vzemite me in vrzite me v morje, in morje se pomiri proti vam. V svesti sem si namreč, da je zavoljo mene prišel ta veliki vihar nad vas.

¹³Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

¹³A možje so hrabro veslali, da bi pritegnili ladjo nazaj h kopnemu, a niso mogli, ker je morje bolj in bolj divjalo proti njim.

¹⁴Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

¹⁴Zato kličejo h GOSPODU in reko: Ah, GOSPOD, prosimo, naj ne poginemo zavoljo tega moža duše in ne prištevaj nam nedolžne krvi; zakaj ti, GOSPOD, si storil, kakor je bila volja tvoja.

¹⁵So they look up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

¹⁵Nato vzamejo Jona in ga vržejo v morje. In morje je nehalo besneti.

¹⁶Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

¹⁶Možje pa so se bali z velikim strahom GOSPODA, in darovali so klalščino GOSPODU in storili obljube.In GOSPOD je pripravil veliko ribo, da bi požrla Jona. In Jona je bil v ribjem trebuhu tri dni in tri noči.

¹⁷Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
