1And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
2Men när de bröto upp och drogo österut, funno de en lågslätt i Sinears land och bosatte sig där.
3And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.
3Och de sade till varandra: »Kom, låt oss slå tegel och bränna det.» Och teglet begagnade de såsom sten, och såsom murbruk begagnade de jordbeck.
4And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
4Och de sade: »Kom, låt oss bygga en stad åt oss och ett torn vars spets räcker upp i himmelen, och så göra oss ett namn; vi kunde eljest bliva kringspridda över hela jorden.»
5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
5Då steg HERREN ned för att se staden och tornet som människobarnen byggde.
6And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
6Och HERREN sade: »Se, de äro ett enda folk och hava alla enahanda tungomål, och detta är deras första tilltag; härefter skall intet bliva dem omöjligt, vad de än besluta att göra.
7Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
7Välan, låt oss stiga dit ned och förbistra deras tungomål, så att den ene icke förstår den andres tungomål.»
8So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
8Och så spridde HERREN dem därifrån ut över hela jorden, så att de måste upphöra att bygga på staden.
9Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
9Därav fick den namnet Babel, eftersom HERREN där förbistrade hela jordens tungomål; därifrån spridde ock HERREN ut dem över hela jorden.
10These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:
10Detta är berättelsen om Sems släkt. När Sem var hundra år gammal, födde han Arpaksad, två år efter floden.
11And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
11Och sedan Sem hade fött Arpaksad, levde han fem hundra år och födde söner och döttrar.
12And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:
12När Arpaksad var trettiofem år gammal, födde han Sela.
13And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
13Och sedan Arpaksad hade fött Sela, levde han fyra hundra tre år och födde söner och döttrar.
14And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:
14När Sela var trettio år gammal, födde han Eber.
15And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
15Och sedan Sela hade fött Eber, levde han fyra hundra tre år och födde söner och döttrar.
16And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:
16När Eber var trettiofyra år gammal, födde han Peleg.
17And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.
17Och sedan Eber hade fött Peleg, levde han fyra hundra trettio år och födde söner och döttrar.
18And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:
18När Peleg var trettio år gammal, födde han Regu.
19And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.
19Och sedan Peleg hade fött Regu, levde han två hundra nio år och födde söner och döttrar.
20And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:
20När Regu var trettiotvå år gammal, födde han Serug.
21And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.
21Och sedan Regu hade fött Serug, levde han två hundra sju år och födde söner och döttrar.
22And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:
22När Serug var trettio år gammal, födde han Nahor.
23And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.
23Och sedan Serug hade fött Nahor, levde han två hundra år och födde söner och döttrar.
24And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:
24När Nahor var tjugunio år gammal, födde han Tera.
25And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.
25Och sedan Nahor hade fött Tera, levde han ett hundra nitton år och födde söner och döttrar.
26And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
26När Tera var sjuttio år gammal, födde han Abram, Nahor och Haran.
27Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.
27Och detta är berättelsen om Teras släkt. Tera födde Abram, Nahor och Haran. Och Haran födde Lot.
28And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.
28Och Haran dog hos sin fader Tera i sitt fädernesland, i det kaldeiska Ur.
29And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
29Och Abram och Nahor togo sig hustrur; Abrams hustru hette Sarai, och Nahors hustru hette Milka, dotter till Haran, som var fader till Milka och Jiska.
30But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
30Men Sarai var ofruktsam och hade inga barn.
31And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
31Och Tera tog med sig sin son Abram och sin sonson Lot, Harans son, och sin sonhustru Sarai, som var hans son Abrams hustru; och de drogo tillsammans ut från det kaldeiska Ur på väg till Kanaans land; men när de kommo till Haran, bosatte de sig där.
32And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
32Och Teras ålder blev två hundra fem år; därefter dog Tera i Haran.
