¹Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

¹Hỡi Thê-ô-phi-lơ quí nhơn, vì có nhiều kẻ dốc lòng chép sử về những sự đã làm nên trong chúng ta,

²Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

²theo như các người chứng kiến từ lúc ban đầu và trở nên người giảng đạo đã truyền lại cho chúng ta,

³It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

³vậy, sau khi đã xét kỹ càng từ đầu mọi sự ấy, tôi cũng tưởng nên theo thứ tự viết mà tỏ ra cho ông,

⁴That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

⁴để ông biết những điều mình đã học là chắc chắn.

⁵THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

⁵Trong đời Hê-rốt, vua nước Giu-đê, có một thầy tế lễ, về ban A-bi-a, tên là Xa-cha-ri; vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét, thuộc về chi phái A-rôn.

⁶And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁶Cả hai đều là công bình trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời, vâng giữ mọi điều răn và lễ nghi của Chúa một cách không chỗ trách được.

⁷And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

⁷Hai người không có con, vì Ê-li-sa-bét son sẻ, và cả hai đều cao tuổi.

⁸And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

⁸Vả, Xa-cha-ri cứ theo thứ tự trong ban mình mà làm chức tế lễ trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời.

⁹According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

⁹Khi đã bắt thăm theo lệ các thầy cả lập ra rồi, thì người được gọi vào nơi thánh của Chúa để dâng hương.

¹⁰And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

¹⁰Ðương giờ dâng hương, cả đoàn dân đông đều ở ngoài cầu nguyện.

¹¹And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

¹¹Bấy giờ có một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện ra cùng Xa-cha-ri, đứng bên hữu bàn thờ xông hương.

¹²And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

¹²Xa-cha-ri thấy thì bối rối sợ hãi.

¹³But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

¹³Nhưng thiên sứ nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi Xa-cha-ri, đừng sợ, vì lời cầu nguyện ngươi đã được nhậm rồi. Ê-li-sa-bét vợ ngươi, sẽ sanh một con trai, ngươi khá đặt tên là Giăng.

¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

¹⁴Con trai đó sẽ làm cho ngươi vui mừng hớn hở, và nhiều kẻ sẽ mừng rỡ về sự sanh người ra.

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

¹⁵Vì người sẽ nên tôn trọng trước mặt Chúa; không uống rượu hay là giống gì làm cho say, và sẽ được đầy dẫy Ðức Thánh Linh từ khi còn trong lòng mẹ.

¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

¹⁶Người sẽ làm cho nhiều con trai Y-sơ-ra-ên trở lại cùng Chúa, là Ðức Chúa Trời của họ;

¹⁷And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

¹⁷chính người lại sẽ lấy tâm thần quyền phép Ê-li mà đi trước mặt Chúa, để đem lòng cha trở về con cái, kẻ loạn nghịch đến sự khôn ngoan của người công bình, đặng sửa soạn cho Chúa một dân sẵn lòng.

¹⁸And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

¹⁸Xa-cha-ri thưa rằng: Bởi sao tôi biết được điều đó? Vì tôi đã già, vợ tôi đã cao tuổi rồi.

¹⁹And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

¹⁹Thiên sứ trả lời rằng: Ta là Gáp-ri-ên, đứng rồi mặt Ðức Chúa Trời; Ngài đã sai ta đến truyền cho ngươi và báo tin mừng nầy.

²⁰And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

²⁰Nầy, ngươi sẽ câm, không nói được cho đến ngày nào các điều ấy xảy ra, vì ngươi không tin lời ta, là lời đến kỳ sẽ ứng nghiệm.

²¹And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

²¹Bấy giờ, dân chúng đợi Xa-cha-ri, và lấy làm lạ, vì người ở lâu trong nơi thánh.

²²And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

²²Khi Xa-cha-ri ra, không nói với chúng được, thì họ mới hiểu rằng người đã thấy sự hiện thấy gì trong đền thánh; người ra dấu cho họ, mà vẫn còn câm.

²³And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

²³Khi những ngày về phần việc mình đã trọn, người trở về nhà.

²⁴And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

²⁴Khỏi ít lâu, vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét chịu thai, ẩn mình đi trong năm tháng, mà nói rằng:

²⁵Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

²⁵Ấy là ơn Chúa đã làm cho tôi, khi Ngài đã đoái đến tôi, để cất sự xấu hổ tôi giữa mọi người.

²⁶And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁶Ðến tháng thứ sáu, Ðức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ Gáp-ri-ên đến thành Na-xa-rét, xứ Ga-li-lê,

²⁷To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

²⁷tới cùng một người nữ đồng trinh tên là Ma-ri, đã hứa gả cho một người nam tên là Giô-sép, về dòng vua Ða-vít.

²⁸And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

²⁸Thiên sứ vào chỗ người nữ ở, nói rằng: Hỡi người được ơn, mừng cho ngươi; Chúa ở cùng ngươi.

²⁹And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

²⁹Ma-ri nghe nói thì bối rối, tự hỏi rằng lời chào ấy có nghĩa gì.

³⁰And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

³⁰Thiên-sứ bèn nói rằng: Hỡi Ma-ri, đừng sợ, vì ngươi đã được ơn trước mặt Ðức Chúa Trời.

³¹And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

³¹Nầy, ngươi sẽ chịu thai và sanh một con trai mà đặt tên là Jêsus.

³²He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

³²Con trai ấy sẽ nên tôn trọng, được xưng là Con của Ðấng Rất Cao; và Chúa, là Ðức Chúa Trời, sẽ ban cho Ngài ngôi Ða-vít là tổ phụ Ngài.

³³And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

³³Ngài sẽ trị vì đời đời nhà Gia-cốp, nước Ngài vô cùng.

³⁴Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

³⁴Ma-ri bèn thưa rằng: Tôi chẳng hề nhận biết người nam nào, thì làm sao có được sự đó?

³⁵And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

³⁵Thiên sứ truyền rằng: Ðức Thánh Linh sẽ đến trên ngươi, và quyền phép Ðấng Rất Cao sẽ che phủ ngươi dưới bóng mình, cho nên con thánh sanh ra, phải xưng là Con Ðức Chúa Trời.

³⁶And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

³⁶Kìa, Ê-li-sa-bét, bà con ngươi, cũng đã chịu thai một trai trong lúc già nua; người ấy vốn có tiếng là son, mà nay cưu mang được sáu tháng rồi.

³⁷For with God nothing shall be impossible.

³⁷Bởi vì không việc chi Ðức Chúa Trời chẳng làm được.

³⁸And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

³⁸Ma-ri thưa rằng: Tôi đây là tôi tớ Chúa; xin sự ấy xảy ra cho tôi như lời người truyền! Ðoạn thiên sứ kìa khỏi Ma-ri.

³⁹And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

³⁹Trong những ngày đó, Ma-ri chờ dậy, lật đật đi trong miền núi, đến một thành về xứ Giu-đa,

⁴⁰And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

⁴⁰vào nhà Xa-cha-ri mà chào Ê-li-sa-bét.

⁴¹And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

⁴¹Vả, Ê-li-sa-bét vừa nghe tiếng Ma-ri chào, con nhỏ trong lòng liền nhảy nhót; và Ê-li-sa-bét được đầy Ðức Thánh Linh,

⁴²And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

⁴²bèn cất tiếng kêu rằng: Ngươi có phải trong đám đờn bà, thai trong lòng ngươi cũng được phước.

⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

⁴³Nhơn đâu ta được sự vẻ vang nầy, là mẹ Chúa ta đến thăm ta?

⁴⁴For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

⁴⁴Bởi vì tai ta mới nghe tiếng ngươi chào, thì con nhỏ ở trong lòng ta liền nhảy mừng.

⁴⁵And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

⁴⁵Phước cho người đã tin, vì lời Chúa truyền cho sẽ được ứng nghiệm!

⁴⁶And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

⁴⁶Ma-ri bèn nói rằng: Linh hồn tôi ngợi khen Chúa,

⁴⁷And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

⁴⁷Tâm thần tôi mừng rỡ trong Ðức Chúa Trời, là Cứu Chúa tôi.

⁴⁸For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

⁴⁸Vì Ngài đã đoái đến sự hèn hạ của tôi tớ Ngài. Nầy, từ rày về sau, muôn đời sẽ khen tôi là có phước;

⁴⁹For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

⁴⁹Bởi Ðấng Toàn Năng đã làm các việc lớn cho tôi. Danh Ngài là thánh,

⁵⁰And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

⁵⁰Và Ngài thương xót kẻ kính sợ Ngài từ đời nầy sang đời kia.

⁵¹He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁵¹Ngài đã dùng cánh tay mình để tỏ ra quyền phép; Và phá tan mưu của kẻ kiêu ngạo toan trong lòng.

⁵²He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

⁵²Ngài đã cách người có quyền khỏi ngôi họ, Và nhắc kẻ khiêm nhượng lên.

⁵³He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

⁵³Ngài đã làm cho kẻ đói được đầy thức ăn ngon, Và đuổi kẻ giàu về tay không.

⁵⁴He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

⁵⁴Ngài đã vùa giúp Y-sơ-ra-ên, tôi tớ Ngài, Và nhớ lại sự thương xót mình. Ðối với Áp-ra-ham cùng con cháu người luôn luôn,

⁵⁵As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

⁵⁵Như Ngài đã phán cùng tổ phụ chúng ta vậy.

⁵⁶And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

⁵⁶Ma-ri với Ê-li-sa-bét chừng ba tháng, rồi trở về nhà mình.

⁵⁷Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁷Bấy giờ, đến ngày mãn nguyệt, Ê-li-sa-bét sanh được một trai.

⁵⁸And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁸Xóm riềng bà con nghe Chúa tỏ ra sự thương xót cả thể cho Ê-li-sa-bét, thì chia vui cùng người.

⁵⁹And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

⁵⁹Qua ngày thứ tám, họ đều đến để làm lễ cắt bì cho con trẻ; và đặt tên là Xa-cha-ri theo tên của cha.

⁶⁰And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

⁶⁰Nhưng mẹ nói rằng: Không! phải đặt tên con là Giăng.

⁶¹And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

⁶¹Họ nói: Trong bà con ngươi không ai có tên đó.

⁶²And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

⁶²Họ bèn ra dấu hỏi cha muốn đặt tên gì cho con.

⁶³And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

⁶³Xa-cha-ri biểu lấy bảng nhỏ, và viết rằng: Giăng là tên nó. Ai nấy đều lấy làm lạ.

⁶⁴And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

⁶⁴Tức thì miệng người mở ra, lưỡi được thong thả, nói và ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời.

⁶⁵And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

⁶⁵Hết thảy xóm giềng đều kinh sợ, và người ta nói chuyện với nhau về mọi sự ấy khắp miền núi xứ Giu-đê.

⁶⁶And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁶Ai nghe cũng ghi vào lòng mà nói rằng: Ấy vậy, con trẻ đó sẽ ra thể nào? Vì tay Chúa ở cùng con trẻ ấy.

⁶⁷And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁷Bấy giờ, Xa-cha-ri, cho con trẻ ấy, được đầy dẫy Ðức Thánh Linh, thì nói tiên tri rằng:

⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

⁶⁸Ngợi khen Chúa, là Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, Vì đã thăm viếng và chuộc dân Ngài,

⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

⁶⁹Cùng sanh ra cho chúng tôi trong nhà Ða-vít, tôi tớ Ngài, Một Ðấng Cứu thế có quyền phép!

⁷⁰As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

⁷⁰Như lời Ngài đã dùng miệng các thánh tiên tri phán từ thuở trước,

⁷¹That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

⁷¹Ngài cứu chúng tôi khỏi kẻ thù và tay mọi người ghen ghét chúng tôi;

⁷²To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

⁷²Ngài tỏ lòng thương xót đến tổ tông chúng tôi, Và nhớ lại giao ước thánh của Ngài,

⁷³The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

⁷³Theo như Ngài đã thề với Áp-ra-ham là tổ phụ chúng tôi,

⁷⁴That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

⁷⁴Mà hứa rằng khi chúng tôi đã được cứu khỏi tay kẻ nghịch thù, Ngài sẽ ban ơn lành cho chúng tôi, trước một Ngài,

⁷⁵In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

⁷⁵Lấy sự thánh khiết và công bình mà hầu việc Ngài, trọn đời mình không sợ hãi chi hết.

⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

⁷⁶Hỡi con trẻ, người ta sẽ kêu con là tiên tri của Ðấng Rất Cao; Con sẽ đi trước mặt Chúa, dọn đường Ngài,

⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

⁷⁷Ðể cho dân Ngài bởi sự tha tội họ mà biết sự rỗi.

⁷⁸Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

⁷⁸Vì Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi động lòng thương xót, Và mặt trời mọc lên từ nơi cao thăm viếng chúng tôi,

⁷⁹To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

⁷⁹Ðể soi những kẻ ngồi chỗ tối tăm và trong bóng sự chết, Cùng đưa chơn chúng tôi đi đường bình an.

⁸⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

⁸⁰Vả, con trẻ ấy lớn lên, tâm thần mạnh mẽ, ở nơi đồng vắng cho đến ngày tỏ mình ra cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
