¹And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

¹Lúc ấy, Sê-sa Au-gút-tơ ra chiếu chỉ phải lập sổ dân trong cả thiên hạ.

²(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

²Việc lập sổ dân nầy là trước hết, và nhằm khi Qui-ri-ni -u làm quan tổng đốc xứ Sy-ri.

³And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

³Ai nấy đều đến thành mình khai tên vào sổ.

⁴And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

⁴Vì Giô-sép là dòng dõi nhà Ða-vít, cho nên cũng từ thành Na-xa-rét, xứ Ga-li-lê, lên thành Ða-vít, gọi là Bết-lê-hem, xứ Giu-đê,

⁵To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

⁵để khai vào sổ tên mình và tên Ma-ri, là người đã hứa gả cho mình đương có thai.

⁶And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

⁶Ðang khi hai người ở nơi đó, thì ngày sanh đẻ của Ma-ri đã đến.

⁷And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

⁷Người sanh con trai đầu lòng, lấy khăn bọc con mình, đặt nằm trong máng cỏ, vì nhà quán không có đủ chỗ ở.

⁸And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

⁸Vả, cũng trong miền đó, có mấy kẻ chăn chiên trú ngoài đồng, thức đêm canh giữ bầy chiên.

⁹And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

⁹Một thiên sứ của Chúa đến gần họ, và sự vinh hiển của Chúa chói lòa xung quanh, họ rất sợ hãi.

¹⁰And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

¹⁰Thiên sứ bèn phán rằng: Ðừng sợ chi; vì nầy, ta báo cho các ngươi một Tin Lành, sẽ làm một sự vui mừng lớn cho muôn dân;

¹¹For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

¹¹ấy là hôm nay tại thành Ða-vít đã sanh cho các ngươi một Ðấng Cứu thế, là Christ, là Chúa.

¹²And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

¹²Nầy là dấu cho các ngươi nhìn nhận Ngài: Các ngươi sẽ gặp một con trẻ bọc bằng khăn, nằm trong máng cỏ.

¹³And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

¹³Bỗng chúc có muôn vàn thiên binh với thiên sứ đó ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời rằng:

¹⁴Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

¹⁴Sáng danh Chúa trên các từng trời rất cao, Bình an dưới đất, ân trạch cho loài người!

¹⁵And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

¹⁵Sau khi các thiên sứ lìa họ lên trời rồi, bọn chăn nói với nhau rằng: Chúng ta hãy tới thành Bết-lê-hem, xem việc đã xảy đến mà Chúa cho chúng ta hay.

¹⁶And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

¹⁶Vậy, họ vội vàng đi đến đó, thấy Ma-ri, Giô-sép, và thấy con trẻ đang nằm trong máng cỏ.

¹⁷And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

¹⁷Ðã thấy vậy, họ bèn thuật lại những lời thiên sứ nói về con trẻ đó.

¹⁸And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

¹⁸Ai nấy nghe chuyện bọn chăn chiên nói, đều lấy làm lạ.

¹⁹But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

¹⁹Còn Ma-ri thì ghi nhớ mọi lời ấy và suy nghĩ trong lòng.

²⁰And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

²⁰Bọn chăn chiên trở về, làm sáng danh và ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời về mọi điều mình đã nghe và thấy y như lời đã bảo trước cùng mình.

²¹And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

²¹Ðến ngày thứ tám, là ngày phải làm phép cắt bì cho con trẻ, thì họ đặt tên là Jêsus, là tên thiên sứ đã đặt cho, trước khi chịu cưu mang trong lòng mẹ.

²²And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

²²Khi đã hết những ngày tinh sạch rồi, theo luật pháp Môi-se, Giô-sép và Ma-ri đem con trẻ lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem để dâng cho Chúa,

²³(As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

²³như đã chép trong luật pháp Chúa rằng: Hễ con trai đầu lòng, phải dâng cho Chúa,

²⁴And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

²⁴lại dâng một cặp chim cu, hoặc chim bò câu con, như luật pháp Chúa đã truyền.

²⁵And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

²⁵Vả, trong thành Giê-ru-sa-lem có một người công bình đạo đức, tên là Si-mê-ôn, trông đợi sự yên ủi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, và Ðức Thánh Linh ngự trên người.

²⁶And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

²⁶Ðức Thánh Linh đã bảo trước cho người biết mình sẽ không chết trước khi thấy Ðấng Christ của Chúa.

²⁷And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

²⁷Vậy người cảm bởi Ðức Thánh Linh vào đền thờ, lúc có cha mẹ đem con trẻ là Jêsus đến, để làm trọn cho Ngài các thường lệ mà luật pháp đã định,

²⁸Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

²⁸thì người bồng ẵm con trẻ, mà ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời rằng:

²⁹Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

²⁹Lạy Chúa, bây giờ xin Chúa cho tôi tớ Chúa được qua đời bình an, theo như lời Ngài;

³⁰For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

³⁰Vì con mắt tôi đã thấy sự cứu vớt của Ngài,

³¹Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

³¹Mà Ngài đã sắm sửa đặng làm ánh sáng trước mặt muôn dân,

³²A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

³²Soi khắp thiên hạ, Và làm vinh hiển cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên là dân Ngài.

³³And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

³³Cha mẹ con trẻ lấy làm lạ về mấy lời người ta nói về con.

³⁴And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

³⁴Si-mê-ôn bèn chúc phước cho hai vợ chồng, nói với Ma-ri, mẹ con trẻ rằng: Ðây, con trẻ nầy đã định làm một cớ cho nhiều người trong Y-sơ-ra-ên vấp ngã hoặc dấy lên, và định làm một dấu gây nên sự cãi trả;

³⁵(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

³⁵còn phần ngươi, có một thanh gươm sẽ đâm thấu qua lòng ngươi. Ấy vậy tư tưởng trong lòng nhiều người sẽ được bày tỏ.

³⁶And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

³⁶Lại có bà tiên tri An-ne, con gái của Pha-nu-ên, về chi phái A-se, đã cao tuổi lắm. Từ lúc còn đồng trinh đã ở với chồng được bảy năm;

³⁷And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

³⁷rồi thì ở góa. Bấy giờ đã tám mươi bốn tuổi, chẳng hề ra khỏi đền thờ, cứ đêm ngày kiêng ăn và cầu nguyện.

³⁸And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

³⁸Một lúc ấy, người cũng thình lình đến đó, ngợi khen Ðức Chúa Trời, và nói chuyện về con trẻ với mọi người trông đợi sự giải cứu của thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.

³⁹And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

³⁹Khi Giô-sép và Ma-ri đã làm trọn mọi việc theo luật pháp Chúa rồi, thì trở về thành của mình là Na-xa-rét trong xứ Ga-li-lê.

⁴⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

⁴⁰Con trẻ lớn lên, và mạnh mẽ, được đầy dẫy sự khôn ngoan, và ơn Ðức Chúa Trời ngự trên Ngài.

⁴¹Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

⁴¹Và, hằng năm đến ngày lễ Vượt qua, cha mẹ Ðức Chúa Jêsus thường đến thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.

⁴²And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

⁴²Khi Ngài lên mười hai tuổi, theo lệ thường ngày lễ, cùng lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.

⁴³And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

⁴³Các ngày lễ qua rồi, cha mẹ trở về, con trẻ là Jêsus ở lại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, mà cha mẹ không hay chi hết.

⁴⁴But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

⁴⁴Hai người tưởng rằng Ngài cũng đồng đi với bạn đi đường, đi trót một ngày, rồi mới tìm hỏi trong đám bà con quen biết;

⁴⁵And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

⁴⁵nhưng không thấy Ngài, bèn trở lại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem mà tìm.

⁴⁶And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

⁴⁶Khỏi ba ngày, gặp Ngài tại trong đền thờ đang ngồi giữa mấy thầy thông thái, vừa nghe vừa hỏi.

⁴⁷And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

⁴⁷Ai nấy nghe, đều lạ khen về sự khôn ngoan và lời đối đáp của Ngài.

⁴⁸And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

⁴⁸Khi cha mẹ thấy Ngài, thì lấy làm lạ, và mẹ hỏi rằng: Hỡi con, sao con làm cho hai ta thể nầy? Nầy, cha và mẹ đã khó nhọc lắm mà tìm con.

⁴⁹And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

⁴⁹Ngài thưa rằng: Cha mẹ kiếm tôi làm chi? Há chẳng biết tôi phải lo việc Cha tôi sao?

⁵⁰And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

⁵⁰Nhưng hai người không hiểu lời Ngài nói chi hết.

⁵¹And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

⁵¹Ðoạn, Ngài theo về thành Na-xa-rét và chịu lụy cha mẹ. Mẹ Ngài ghi các lời ấy vào lòng.

⁵²And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

⁵²Ðức Chúa Jêsus khôn ngoan càng thêm, thân hình càng lớn, càng được đẹp lòng Ðức Chúa Trời và người ta.
