¹Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples,

¹Siis Jeesus kõneles rahvale ja oma jüngritele:

²saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat:

²'Moosese asemele on istunud kirjatundjad ja variserid.

³all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, [these] do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.

³Kõike nüüd, mida nad iganes teile ütlevad, seda tehke ja pidage, aga ärge tehke nende tegusid mööda, sest nad räägivad küll, aga ise ei tee!

⁴Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.

⁴Nad seovad kokku ränki ja vaevukantavaid koormaid ja panevad need inimeste õlgadele, ise aga ei taha sõrmeotsagagi neid liigutada.

⁵But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders [of their garments],

⁵Kõiki oma tegusid teevad nad selleks, et inimesed neid vaataksid. Nad teevad oma palvepaelad laiemaks ja palvetupsud suuremaks.

⁶and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

⁶Nad armastavad esimesi kohti võõruspidudel ja esimesi istmeid sünagoogides

⁷and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi.

⁷ja teretamisi turgudel ja seda, et inimesed hüüaksid neid rabiks.

⁸But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren.

⁸Teie ärge laske endid hüüda rabiks, sest ainult üks on teie Õpetaja, teie kõik olete aga vennad!

⁹And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, [even] he who is in heaven.

⁹Ja ärge hüüdke kedagi maa peal oma isaks, sest ainult üks on teie Isa, see taevane!

¹⁰Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, [even] the Christ.

¹⁰Ärge laske end ka kellelgi hüüda juhatajaks, sest ainult üks on teie Juhataja - Kristus!

¹¹But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

¹¹Aga suurim teie seast olgu teie teenija!

¹²And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

¹²Kes ennast ise ülendab, seda alandatakse, ja kes ennast ise alandab, seda ülendatakse.

¹³But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter[.]

¹³Aga häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te lukustate taevariigi inimeste eest! Ise te ei lähe sinna sisse ega lase sisse ka neid, kes tahaksid minna.

¹⁴Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, even while for a pretence ye make long prayers: therefore ye shall receive greater condemnation.

¹⁴[Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te neelate alla lesknaiste majad ja silmakirjaks venitate palvetused pikaks! Seepärast te saate seda rängema kohtuotsuse.]

¹⁵Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

¹⁵Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad! Te rändate läbi mered ja mandrid, et pöörata kas või üks oma usku, ja kui see sünnib, siis te teete temast põrgulise, kahevõrra niisuguse, kui te ise olete.

¹⁶Woe unto you, ye blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor.

¹⁶Häda teile, te sõgedad teejuhid, kes te ütlete: 'Kes iganes vannub templi juures, selle vanne ei loe midagi, kes aga iganes vannub templi kulla juures, see on kohustatud vannet täitma.'

¹⁷Ye fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that hath sanctified the gold?

¹⁷Te rumalad ja sõgedad! Kumb on suurem, kas kuld või tempel, mis kulla pühitseb?

¹⁸And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor.

¹⁸Te ütlete: 'Kes iganes vannub altari juures, selle vanne ei loe midagi, aga kes iganes vannub altaril oleva ohvrianni juures, see on kohustatud vannet täitma.'

¹⁹Ye blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

¹⁹Teie sõgedad, kumb siis on suurem, kas ohvriand või altar, mis ohvrianni pühitseb?

²⁰He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

²⁰Niisiis, kes vannub altari juures, see vannub selle ja kõige juures, mis on altaril,

²¹And he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

²¹ja kes vannub templi juures, see vannub selle ja tema juures, kes templis elab,

²²And he that sweareth by the heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

²²ja kes vannub taeva juures, see vannub Jumala trooni ja troonil istuja juures.

²³Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone.

²³Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te maksate kümnist mündist ja tillist ja köömnest ning jätate kõrvale kaalukama osa Seadusest - õigluse ja halastuse ja ustavuse! Üht tuleb teha, kuid teist ei tohi jätta kõrvale!

²⁴Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel!

²⁴Te sõgedad teejuhid, te kurnate välja küll sääsed, aga kaamelid neelate alla.

²⁵Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess.

²⁵Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, sest te puhastate karika ja liua väljastpoolt, aga seest on need täis riisumist ja aplust!

²⁶Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also.

²⁶Sa sõge variser! Puhasta enne karikas seestpoolt, et see ka väljast saaks puhtaks!

²⁷Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

²⁷Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, sest te sarnanete lubjatud haudadega, mis väljastpoolt paistavad küll nägusad, aga seestpoolt on täis surnuluid ja kõiksugust roisku!

²⁸Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

²⁸Nõnda paistate ka teie inimestele õigetena, aga seestpoolt olete täis silmakirjatsemist ja ülekohut.

²⁹Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous,

²⁹Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, sest te ehitate prohvetite hauamärke ja ehite õigete hauakambreid

³⁰and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

³⁰ja ütlete: 'Kui meie oleksime elanud oma esiisade päevil, siis meie küll ei oleks olnud nende kaasosalised prohvetite vere valamisel.'

³¹Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets.

³¹Nõnda te tunnistate ise eneste kohta, et teie olete prohvetite tapjate pojad.

³²Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

³²Täitke siis teiegi oma vanemate mõõt!

³³Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell?

³³Te maod, te rästikute sugu, kuidas te võiksite põgeneda ära põrgu kohtust?

³⁴Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:

³⁴Seepärast, vaata, mina läkitan teie juurde prohveteid ja tarku ja kirjatundjaid ning osa te tapate ja lööte risti ning osa te piitsutate oma sünagoogides ja jälitate neid linnast linna,

³⁵that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar.

³⁵et teie peale tuleks kõik õige veri, mis on valatud maa peal õige Aabeli verest kuni Berekja poja Sakarja vereni, kelle te tapsite templi ja altari vahel.

³⁶Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

³⁶Tõesti, ma ütlen teile, see kõik tuleb selle sugupõlve peale!

³⁷O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

³⁷Jeruusalemm, Jeruusalemm, kes sa tapad prohveteid ja viskad kividega surnuks need, kes su juurde on läkitatud! Kui palju kordi olen ma tahtnud su lapsi koguda, otsekui kana kogub oma pesakonna tiibade alla, ent teie ei ole tahtnud!

³⁸Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

³⁸Vaata, teie koda jäetakse maha,

³⁹For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed [is] he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

³⁹sest ma ütlen teile, et teie ei näe mind nüüdsest enam, kuni te ütlete: Õnnistatud olgu, kes tuleb Issanda nimel!'
