¹And it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

¹ויהי אחרי כן וימת נחש מלך בני עמון וימלך בנו תחתיו׃

²And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me. So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

²David dit: Je montrerai de la bienveillance à Hanun, fils de Nachasch, car son père en a montré à mon égard. Et David envoya des messagers pour le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent dans le pays des fils d'Ammon auprès de Hanun, pour le consoler,

²ויאמר דויד אעשה חסד עם חנון בן נחש כי עשה אביו עמי חסד וישלח דויד מלאכים לנחמו על אביו ויבאו עבדי דויד אל ארץ בני עמון אל חנון לנחמו׃

³But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

³les chefs des fils d'Ammon dirent à Hanun: Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs? N'est-ce pas pour reconnaître la ville et pour la détruire, et pour explorer le pays, que ses serviteurs sont venus auprès de toi?

³ויאמרו שרי בני עמון לחנון המכבד דויד את אביך בעיניך כי שלח לך מנחמים הלא בעבור לחקר ולהפך ולרגל הארץ באו עבדיו אליך׃

⁴So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁴Alors Hanun saisit les serviteurs de David, les fit raser, et fit couper leurs habits par le milieu jusqu'au haut des cuisses. Puis il les congédia.

⁴ויקח חנון את עבדי דויד ויגלחם ויכרת את מדויהם בחצי עד המפשעה וישלחם׃

⁵Then there went certain persons, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

⁵David, que l'on vint informer de ce qui était arrivé à ces hommes, envoya des gens à leur rencontre, car ils étaient dans une grande confusion; et le roi leur fit dire: Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et revenez ensuite.

⁵וילכו ויגידו לדויד על האנשים וישלח לקראתם כי היו האנשים נכלמים מאד ויאמר המלך שבו בירחו עד אשר יצמח זקנכם ושבתם׃

⁶And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Arammaacah, and out of Zobah.

⁶Les fils d'Ammon virent qu'ils s'étaient rendus odieux à David, et Hanun et les fils d'Ammon envoyèrent mille talents d'argent pour prendre à leur solde des chars et des cavaliers chez les Syriens de Mésopotamie et chez les Syriens de Maaca et de Tsoba.

⁶ויראו בני עמון כי התבאשו עם דויד וישלח חנון ובני עמון אלף ככר כסף לשכר להם מן ארם נהרים ומן ארם מעכה ומצובה רכב ופרשים׃

⁷So they hired them thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

⁷Ils prirent à leur solde trente-deux mille chars et le roi de Maaca avec son peuple, lesquels vinrent camper devant Médeba. Les fils d'Ammon se rassemblèrent de leurs villes, et marchèrent au combat.

⁷וישכרו להם שנים ושלשים אלף רכב ואת מלך מעכה ואת עמו ויבאו ויחנו לפני מידבא ובני עמון נאספו מעריהם ויבאו למלחמה׃

⁸And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

⁸A cette nouvelle, David envoya contre eux Joab et toute l'armée, les hommes vaillants.

⁸וישמע דויד וישלח את יואב ואת כל צבא הגבורים׃

⁹And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

⁹Les fils d'Ammon sortirent, et se rangèrent en bataille à l'entrée de la ville; les rois qui étaient venus prirent position séparément dans la campagne.

⁹ויצאו בני עמון ויערכו מלחמה פתח העיר והמלכים אשר באו לבדם בשדה׃

¹⁰Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

¹⁰Joab vit qu'il avait à combattre par devant et par derrière. Il choisit alors sur toute l'élite d'Israël un corps, qu'il opposa aux Syriens;

¹⁰וירא יואב כי היתה פני המלחמה אליו פנים ואחור ויבחר מכל בחור בישראל ויערך לקראת ארם׃

¹¹And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and they put themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

¹¹et il plaça sous le commandement de son frère Abischaï le reste du peuple, pour faire face aux fils d'Ammon.

¹¹ואת יתר העם נתן ביד אבשי אחיו ויערכו לקראת בני עמון׃

¹²And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

¹²Il dit: Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours; et si les fils d'Ammon sont plus forts que toi, j'irai à ton secours.

¹²ויאמר אם תחזק ממני ארם והיית לי לתשועה ואם בני עמון יחזקו ממך והושעתיך׃

¹³Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.

¹³Sois ferme, et montrons du courage pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que l'Eternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon!

¹³חזק ונתחזקה בעד עמנו ובעד ערי אלהינו ויהוה הטוב בעיניו יעשה׃

¹⁴So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

¹⁴Joab, avec son peuple, s'avança pour attaquer les Syriens, et ils s'enfuirent devant lui.

¹⁴ויגש יואב והעם אשר עמו לפני ארם למלחמה וינוסו מפניו׃

¹⁵And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

¹⁵Et quand les fils d'Ammon virent que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, ils s'enfuirent aussi devant Abischaï, frère de Joab, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab revint à Jérusalem.

¹⁵ובני עמון ראו כי נס ארם וינוסו גם הם מפני אבשי אחיו ויבאו העירה ויבא יואב ירושלם׃

¹⁶And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the River, with Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.

¹⁶Les Syriens, voyant qu'ils avaient été battus par Israël, envoyèrent chercher les Syriens qui étaient de l'autre côté du fleuve; et Schophach, chef de l'armée d'Hadarézer, était à leur tête.

¹⁶וירא ארם כי נגפו לפני ישראל וישלחו מלאכים ויוציאו את ארם אשר מעבר הנהר ושופך שר צבא הדדעזר לפניהם׃

¹⁷And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

¹⁷On l'annonça à David, qui assembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, marcha contre eux, et se prépara à les attaquer. David se rangea en bataille contre les Syriens.

¹⁷ויגד לדויד ויאסף את כל ישראל ויעבר הירדן ויבא אלהם ויערך אלהם ויערך דויד לקראת ארם מלחמה וילחמו עמו׃

¹⁸And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians [the men of] seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

¹⁸Mais les Syriens, après s'être battus avec lui, s'enfuirent devant Israël. David leur tua les troupes de sept mille chars et quarante mille hommes de pied, et il fit mourir Schophach, chef de l'armée.

¹⁸וינס ארם מלפני ישראל ויהרג דויד מארם שבעת אלפים רכב וארבעים אלף איש רגלי ואת שופך שר הצבא המית׃

¹⁹And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and served him: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

¹⁹Les serviteurs d'Hadarézer, se voyant battus par Israël, firent la paix avec David et lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens ne voulurent plus secourir les fils d'Ammon.

¹⁹ויראו עבדי הדדעזר כי נגפו לפני ישראל וישלימו עם דויד ויעבדהו ולא אבה ארם להושיע את בני עמון עוד׃
