1And Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
1Satan se leva contre Israël, et il excita David à faire le dénombrement d'Israël.
1ויעמד שטן על ישראל ויסת את דויד למנות את ישראל׃
2And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them.
2Et David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: Allez, faites le dénombrement d'Israël, depuis Beer-Schéba jusqu'à Dan, et rapportez-le-moi, afin que je sache à combien il s'élève.
2ויאמר דויד אל יואב ואל שרי העם לכו ספרו את ישראל מבאר שבע ועד דן והביאו אלי ואדעה את מספרם׃
3And Joab said, Jehovah make his people a hundred times as many as they are: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of guilt unto Israel?
3Joab répondit: Que l'Eternel rende son peuple cent fois plus nombreux! O roi mon seigneur, ne sont-ils pas tous serviteurs de mon seigneur? Mais pourquoi mon seigneur demande-t-il cela? Pourquoi faire ainsi pécher Israël?
3ויאמר יואב יוסף יהוה על עמו כהם מאה פעמים הלא אדני המלך כלם לאדני לעבדים למה יבקש זאת אדני למה יהיה לאשמה לישראל׃
4Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
4Le roi persista dans l'ordre qu'il donnait à Joab. Et Joab partit, et parcourut tout Israël; puis il revint à Jérusalem.
4ודבר המלך חזק על יואב ויצא יואב ויתהלך בכל ישראל ויבא ירושלם׃
5And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
5Joab remit à David le rôle du dénombrement du peuple: il y avait dans tout Israël onze cent mille hommes tirant l'épée, et en Juda quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes tirant l'épée.
5ויתן יואב את מספר מפקד העם אל דויד ויהי כל ישראל אלף אלפים ומאה אלף איש שלף חרב ויהודה ארבע מאות ושבעים אלף איש שלף חרב׃
6But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them; for the king's word was abominable to Joab.
6Il ne fit point parmi eux le dénombrement de Lévi et de Benjamin, car l'ordre du roi lui paraissait une abomination.
6ולוי ובנימן לא פקד בתוכם כי נתעב דבר המלך את יואב׃
7And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
7Cet ordre déplut à Dieu, qui frappa Israël.
7וירע בעיני האלהים על הדבר הזה ויך את ישראל׃
8And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing: but now, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
8Et David dit à Dieu: J'ai commis un grand péché en faisant cela! Maintenant, daigne pardonner l'iniquité de ton serviteur, car j'ai complètement agi en insensé!
8ויאמר דויד אל האלהים חטאתי מאד אשר עשיתי את הדבר הזה ועתה העבר נא את עוון עבדך כי נסכלתי מאד׃
9And Jehovah spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,
9L'Eternel adressa ainsi la parole à Gad, le voyant de David:
9וידבר יהוה אל גד חזה דויד לאמר׃
10Go and speak unto David, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
10Va dire à David: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Je te propose trois fléaux; choisis-en un, et je t'en frapperai.
10לך ודברת אל דויד לאמר כה אמר יהוה שלוש אני נטה עליך בחר לך אחת מהנה ואעשה לך׃
11So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, Take which thou wilt:
11Gad alla vers David, et lui dit: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Accepte,
11ויבא גד אל דויד ויאמר לו כה אמר יהוה קבל לך׃
12either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before thy foes, while the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of Jehovah, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of Jehovah destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
12ou trois années de famine, ou trois mois pendant lesquels tu seras détruit par tes adversaires et atteint par l'épée de tes ennemis, ou trois jours pendant lesquels l'épée de l'Eternel et la peste seront dans le pays et l'ange de l'Eternel portera la destruction dans tout le territoire d'Israël. Vois maintenant ce que je dois répondre à celui qui m'envoie.
12אם שלוש שנים רעב ואם שלשה חדשים נספה מפני צריך וחרב אויבך למשגת ואם שלשת ימים חרב יהוה ודבר בארץ ומלאך יהוה משחית בכל גבול ישראל ועתה ראה מה אשיב את שלחי דבר׃
13And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall, I pray, into the hand of Jehovah; for very great are his mercies: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
13David répondit à Gad: Je suis dans une grande angoisse! Oh! que je tombe entre les mains de l'Eternel, car ses compassions sont immenses; mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!
13ויאמר דויד אל גד צר לי מאד אפלה נא ביד יהוה כי רבים רחמיו מאד וביד אדם אל אפל׃
14So Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel; and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.
14L'Eternel envoya la peste en Israël, et il tomba soixante-dix mille hommes d'Israël.
14ויתן יהוה דבר בישראל ויפל מישראל שבעים אלף איש׃
15And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was about to destroy, Jehovah beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the destroying angel, It is enough; now stay thy hand. And the angel of Jehovah was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
15Dieu envoya un ange à Jérusalem pour la détruire; et comme il la détruisait, l'Eternel regarda et se repentit de ce mal, et il dit à l'ange qui détruisait: Assez! Retire maintenant ta main. L'ange de l'Eternel se tenait près de l'aire d'Ornan, le Jébusien.
15וישלח האלהים מלאך לירושלם להשחיתה וכהשחית ראה יהוה וינחם על הרעה ויאמר למלאך המשחית רב עתה הרף ידך ומלאך יהוה עמד עם גרן ארנן היבוסי׃
16And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of Jehovah standing between earth and heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
16David leva les yeux, et vit l'ange de l'Eternel se tenant entre la terre et le ciel et ayant à la main son épée nue tournée contre Jérusalem. Alors David et les anciens, couverts de sacs, tombèrent sur leur visage.
16וישא דויד את עיניו וירא את מלאך יהוה עמד בין הארץ ובין השמים וחרבו שלופה בידו נטויה על ירושלם ויפל דויד והזקנים מכסים בשקים על פניהם׃
17And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, O Jehovah my God, be against me, and against my father's house; but not against thy people, that they should be plagued.
17Et David dit à Dieu: N'est-ce pas moi qui ai ordonné le dénombrement du peuple? C'est moi qui ai péché et qui ai fait le mal; mais ces brebis, qu'ont-elles fait? Eternel, mon Dieu, que ta main soit donc sur moi et sur la maison de mon père, et qu'elle ne fasse point une plaie parmi ton peuple!
17ויאמר דויד אל האלהים הלא אני אמרתי למנות בעם ואני הוא אשר חטאתי והרע הרעותי ואלה הצאן מה עשו יהוה אלהי תהי נא ידך בי ובבית אבי ובעמך לא למגפה׃
18Then the angel of Jehovah commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and rear an altar unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
18L'ange de l'Eternel dit à Gad de parler à David, afin qu'il montât pour élever un autel à l'Eternel dans l'aire d'Ornan, le Jébusien.
18ומלאך יהוה אמר אל גד לאמר לדויד כי יעלה דויד להקים מזבח ליהוה בגרן ארנן היבסי׃
19And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of Jehovah.
19David monta, selon la parole que Gad avait prononcée au nom de l'Eternel.
19ויעל דויד בדבר גד אשר דבר בשם יהוה׃
20And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons that were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
20Ornan se retourna et vit l'ange, et ses quatre fils se cachèrent avec lui: il foulait alors du froment.
20וישב ארנן וירא את המלאך וארבעת בניו עמו מתחבאים וארנן דש חטים׃
21And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing-floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
21Lorsque David arriva auprès d'Ornan, Ornan regarda, et il aperçut David; puis il sortit de l'aire, et se prosterna devant David, le visage contre terre.
21ויבא דויד עד ארנן ויבט ארנן וירא את דויד ויצא מן הגרן וישתחו לדויד אפים ארצה׃
22Then David said to Ornan, Give me the place of this threshing-floor, that I may build thereon an altar unto Jehovah: for the full price shalt thou give it me, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
22David dit à Ornan: Cède-moi l'emplacement de l'aire pour que j'y bâtisse un autel à l'Eternel; cède-le-moi contre sa valeur en argent, afin que la plaie se retire de dessus le peuple.
22ויאמר דויד אל ארנן תנה לי מקום הגרן ואבנה בו מזבח ליהוה בכסף מלא תנהו לי ותעצר המגפה מעל העם׃
23And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give [thee] the oxen for burnt-offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal-offering; I give it all.
23Ornan répondit à David: Prends-le, et que mon seigneur le roi fasse ce qui lui semblera bon; vois, je donne les boeufs pour l'holocauste, les chars pour le bois, et le froment pour l'offrande, je donne tout cela.
23ויאמר ארנן אל דויד קח לך ויעש אדני המלך הטוב בעיניו ראה נתתי הבקר לעלות והמורגים לעצים והחטים למנחה הכל נתתי׃
24And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for Jehovah, nor offer a burnt-offering without cost.
24Mais le roi David dit à Ornan: Non! je veux l'acheter contre sa valeur en argent, car je ne présenterai point à l'Eternel ce qui est à toi, et je n'offrirai point un holocauste qui ne me coûte rien.
24ויאמר המלך דויד לארנן לא כי קנה אקנה בכסף מלא כי לא אשא אשר לך ליהוה והעלות עולה חנם׃
25So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
25Et David donna à Ornan six cents sicles d'or pour l'emplacement.
25ויתן דויד לארנן במקום שקלי זהב משקל שש מאות׃
26And David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and called upon Jehovah; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt-offering.
26David bâtit là un autel à l'Eternel, et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices d'actions de grâces. Il invoqua l'Eternel, et l'Eternel lui répondit par le feu, qui descendit du ciel sur l'autel de l'holocauste.
26ויבן שם דויד מזבח ליהוה ויעל עלות ושלמים ויקרא אל יהוה ויענהו באש מן השמים על מזבח העלה׃
27And Jehovah commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
27Alors l'Eternel parla à l'ange, qui remit son épée dans le fourreau.
27ויאמר יהוה למלאך וישב חרבו אל נדנה׃
28At that time, when David saw that Jehovah had answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
28A cette époque-là, David, voyant que l'Eternel l'avait exaucé dans l'aire d'Ornan, le Jébusien, y offrait des sacrifices.
28בעת ההיא בראות דויד כי ענהו יהוה בגרן ארנן היבוסי ויזבח שם׃
29For the tabernacle of Jehovah, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt-offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
29Mais le tabernacle de l'Eternel, construit par Moïse au désert, et l'autel des holocaustes, étaient alors sur le haut lieu de Gabaon.
29ומשכן יהוה אשר עשה משה במדבר ומזבח העולה בעת ההיא בבמה בגבעון׃
30But David could not go before it to inquire of God; for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of Jehovah.
30David ne pouvait pas aller devant cet autel pour chercher Dieu, parce que l'épée de l'ange de l'Eternel lui avait causé de l'épouvante.
30ולא יכל דויד ללכת לפניו לדרש אלהים כי נבעת מפני חרב מלאך יהוה׃
