¹Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual [gifts], but rather that ye may prophesy.

¹Recherchez la charité. Aspirez aussi aux dons spirituels, mais surtout à celui de prophétie.

¹רדפו אחרי האהבה והתאוו מתנות הרוח וביותר אשר תתנבאו׃

²For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

²En effet, celui qui parle en langue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu, car personne ne le comprend, et c'est en esprit qu'il dit des mystères.

²כי המדבר בלשון איננו מדבר לאדם כי אם לאלהים כי אין איש אשר ישמעהו רק ברוח הוא מדבר סודות׃

³But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation.

³Celui qui prophétise, au contraire, parle aux hommes, les édifie, les exhorte, les console.

³והמתנבא הוא מדבר לבני אדם לבנותם וליסרם ולנחמם׃

⁴He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

⁴Celui qui parle en langue s'édifie lui-même; celui qui prophétise édifie l'Eglise.

⁴המדבר בלשון בונה את נפשו והמתנבא בונה את העדה׃

⁵Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

⁵Je désire que vous parliez tous en langues, mais encore plus que vous prophétisiez. Celui qui prophétise est plus grand que celui qui parle en langues, à moins que ce dernier n'interprète, pour que l'Eglise en reçoive de l'édification.

⁵וחפצתי כי תדברו כלכם בלשנות וביותר כי תתנבאו כי גדול המתנבא מן המדבר בלשנות בלתי אם יפרש למען תבנה העדה׃

⁶But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?

⁶Et maintenant, frères, de quelle utilité vous serais-je, si je venais à vous parlant en langues, et si je ne vous parlais pas par révélation, ou par connaissance, ou par prophétie, ou par doctrine?

⁶ועתה אחי כי אבוא אליכם ואדבר בלשנות מה אועיל לכם אם לא אדבר אליכם בחזון או בדעת או בנבואה או בהוראה׃

⁷Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

⁷Si les objets inanimés qui rendent un son, comme une flûte ou une harpe, ne rendent pas des sons distincts, comment reconnaîtra-t-on ce qui est joué sur la flûte ou sur la harpe?

⁷הלא גם הכלים הדוממים הנתנים קול הן חליל הן כנור אם לא ישמיעו קלות אשר תוכל האזן להבחין איכה יודע מה יזמר ומה ינגן׃

⁸For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war?

⁸Et si la trompette rend un son confus, qui se préparera au combat?

⁸גם השופר אם יתן את קולו בלתי ברור מי יחלץ למלחמה׃

⁹So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air.

⁹De même vous, si par la langue vous ne donnez pas une parole distincte, comment saura-t-on ce que vous dites? Car vous parlerez en l'air.

⁹כן גם אתם אם לא תוציאו בלשונכם דבור מפרש איכה יודע האמור הלא תהיו כמדברים לרוח׃

¹⁰There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no [kind] is without signification.

¹⁰Quelque nombreuses que puissent être dans le monde les diverses langues, il n'en est aucune qui ne soit une langue intelligible;

¹⁰הן כמה מיני לשנות יש בעולם ואין אחת מהן בלי קול׃

¹¹If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me.

¹¹si donc je ne connais pas le sens de la langue, je serai un barbare pour celui qui parle, et celui qui parle sera un barbare pour moi.

¹¹לכן אם אינני ידע פשר הקול אהיה נכרי בעיני המדבר והמדבר יהיה נכרי בעיני׃

¹²So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual [gifts], seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.

¹²De même vous, puisque vous aspirez aux dons spirituels, que ce soit pour l'édification de l'Eglise que vous cherchiez à en posséder abondamment.

¹²כן גם אתם בהיותכם מתאוים לכחות רוחניות בקשו להעדיף במה שיבנה את העדה׃

¹³Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

¹³C'est pourquoi, que celui qui parle en langue prie pour avoir le don d'interpréter.

¹³על כן יתפלל המדבר בלשון וגם יפרשנה׃

¹⁴For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

¹⁴Car si je prie en langue, mon esprit est en prière, mais mon intelligence demeure stérile.

¹⁴כי אם אתפלל בלשון רוחי מתפלל ושכלי איננו עשה פרי׃

¹⁵What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

¹⁵Que faire donc? Je prierai par l'esprit, mais je prierai aussi avec l'intelligence; je chanterai par l'esprit, mais je chanterai aussi avec l'intelligence.

¹⁵ועתה מה לעשות אתפללה ברוחי ואתפללה גם בשכלי אזמרה ברוחי ואזמרה גם בשכלי׃

¹⁶Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest?

¹⁶Autrement, si tu rends grâces par l'esprit, comment celui qui est dans les rangs de l'homme du peuple répondra-t-il Amen! à ton action de grâces, puisqu'il ne sait pas ce que tu dis?

¹⁶כי אם תברך ברוח איך יענה העמד נמצב ההדיוט אמן על הודיתך באשר לא ידע מה אתה אמר׃

¹⁷For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

¹⁷Tu rends, il est vrai, d'excellentes actions de grâces, mais l'autre n'est pas édifié.

¹⁷הן אתה תיטיב להודות אבל רעך לא יבנה׃

¹⁸I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:

¹⁸Je rends grâces à Dieu de ce que je parle en langue plus que vous tous;

¹⁸אודה לאלהי כי יותר מכלכם אני מדבר בלשנות׃

¹⁹howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

¹⁹mais, dans l'Eglise, j'aime mieux dire cinq paroles avec mon intelligence, afin d'instruire aussi les autres, que dix mille paroles en langue.

¹⁹אכן בקהל אבחר לדבר חמש מלין בשכלי למען הורת גם את האחרים מלדבר רבבות מלין בלשון׃

²⁰Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men.

²⁰Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants sous le rapport du jugement; mais pour la malice, soyez enfants, et, à l'égard du jugement, soyez des hommes faits.

²⁰אחי אל תהיו ילדים בבינה רק לרע היו עללים ובבינה היו שלמים׃

²¹In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.

²¹Il est écrit dans la loi: C'est par des hommes d'une autre langue Et par des lèvres d'étrangers Que je parlerai à ce peuple, Et ils ne m'écouteront pas même ainsi, dit le Seigneur.

²¹הן כתוב בתורה כי בלעגי שפה ובלשון אחרת אדבר אל העם הזה וגם בזאת לא אבו שמע לי אמר יהוה׃

²²Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying [is for a sign], not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.

²²Par conséquent, les langues sont un signe, non pour les croyants, mais pour les non-croyants; la prophétie, au contraire, est un signe, non pour les non-croyants, mais pour les croyants.

²²לכן הלשנות לא למאמינים הנה לאות כי אם לאשר אינם מאמינים אבל הנבואה איננה לאשר אינם מאמינים כי אם למאמינים׃

²³If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?

²³Si donc, dans une assemblée de l'Eglise entière, tous parlent en langues, et qu'il survienne des hommes du peuple ou des non-croyants, ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes fous?

²³והנה אם תקהל כל העדה יחד וכלם ידברו בלשנות ויבואו הדיוטים או אשר אינם מאמינים הלא יאמרו כי משגעים אתם׃

²⁴But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all;

²⁴Mais si tous prophétisent, et qu'il survienne quelque non-croyant ou un homme du peuple, il est convaincu par tous, il est jugé par tous,

²⁴אבל אם יתנבאו כלם ובא איש לא מאמין או הדיוט אז יוכח על ידי כלם וידון על ידי כלם׃

²⁵the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

²⁵les secrets de son coeur sont dévoilés, de telle sorte que, tombant sur sa face, il adorera Dieu, et publiera que Dieu est réellement au milieu de vous.

²⁵ובכן יגלו תעלמות לבבו ויפל על פניו וישתחוה לאלהים ויודה בקול כי באמת האלהים בקרבכם׃

²⁶What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

²⁶Que faire donc, frères? Lorsque vous vous assemblez, les uns ou les autres parmi vous ont-ils un cantique, une instruction, une révélation, une langue, une interprétation, que tout se fasse pour l'édification.

²⁶ועתה מה לעשות אחי בהקהלכם יחד כל אחד ואחד מכם יש לו מזמור יש לו הוראה יש לו לשון יש לו חזון יש לו באור אך יעשה הכל להבנות׃

²⁷If any man speaketh in a tongue, [let it be] by two, or at the most three, and [that] in turn; and let one interpret:

²⁷En est-il qui parlent en langue, que deux ou trois au plus parlent, chacun à son tour, et que quelqu'un interprète;

²⁷כי ידבר איש בלשון ידברו נא שנים שנים או על היותר שלשה וזה אחר זה ואחד יפרש׃

²⁸but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

²⁸s'il n'y a point d'interprète, qu'on se taise dans l'Eglise, et qu'on parle à soi-même et à Dieu.

²⁸ואם אין מפרש אז ידם בקהל וידבר לנפשו ולאלהים׃

²⁹And let the prophets speak [by] two or three, and let the others discern.

²⁹Pour ce qui est des prophètes, que deux ou trois parlent, et que les autres jugent;

²⁹והנביאים הם ידברו שנים או שלשה והאחרים יבחנו׃

³⁰But if a revelation be made to another sitting by, let the first keep silence.

³⁰et si un autre qui est assis a une révélation, que le premier se taise.

³⁰וכי נגלה חזון לאחר הישב שם אז ידם הראשון׃

³¹For ye all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted;

³¹Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser successivement, afin que tous soient instruits et que tous soient exhortés.

³¹כי תוכלו להתנבא כלכם זה אחר זה למען ילמדו כלם וכלם יזהרו׃

³²and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets;

³²Les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes;

³²ורוחות הנביאים תחת ידי הנביאים המה׃

³³for God is not [a God] of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,

³³car Dieu n'est pas un Dieu de désordre, mais de paix. Comme dans toutes les Eglises des saints,

³³כי לא אלהי מבוכה האלהים כי אם אלהי השלום כאשר בכל קהלות הקדשים׃

³⁴let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law.

³⁴que les femmes se taisent dans les assemblées, car il ne leur est pas permis d'y parler; mais qu'elles soient soumises, selon que le dit aussi la loi.

³⁴נשיכם בכנסיות תשתקנה כי לא נתנה להן רשות לדבר כי אם להכנע כאשר גם אמרה התורה׃

³⁵And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.

³⁵Si elles veulent s'instruire sur quelque chose, qu'elles interrogent leurs maris à la maison; car il est malséant à une femme de parler dans l'Eglise.

³⁵ואם חפצן ללמד דבר תשאלנה את בעליהן בבית כי חרפה היא לנשים לדבר בקהל׃

³⁶What? was it from you that the word of God went forth? or came it unto you alone?

³⁶Est-ce de chez vous que la parole de Dieu est sortie? ou est-ce à vous seuls qu'elle est parvenue?

³⁶או המכם יצא דבר אלהים אם אליכם לבדכם הגיע׃

³⁷If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.

³⁷Si quelqu'un croit être prophète ou inspiré, qu'il reconnaisse que ce que je vous écris est un commandement du Seigneur.

³⁷כי יתברך איש בלבבו להיות נביא או איש הרוח בין יבין את אשר אני כתב לכם כי מצות האדון הנה׃

³⁸But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

³⁸Et si quelqu'un l'ignore, qu'il l'ignore.

³⁸ומי אשר לא ידע אל ידע׃

³⁹Wherefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

³⁹Ainsi donc, frères, aspirez au don de prophétie, et n'empêchez pas de parler en langues.

³⁹לכן אחי השתדלו להתנבא ואל תכלאו מלדבר בלשנות׃

⁴⁰But let all things be done decently and in order.

⁴⁰Mais que tout se fasse avec bienséance et avec ordre.

⁴⁰הכל יעשה כהגן וכשורה׃
