¹Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not ye my work in the Lord?

¹Ne suis-je pas libre? Ne suis-je pas apôtre? N'ai-je pas vu Jésus notre Seigneur? N'êtes-vous pas mon oeuvre dans le Seigneur?

¹הלא שליח אנכי הלא חפשי אנכי הלא ראיתי את ישוע המשיח אדנינו הלא אתם פעלי באדנינו׃

²If to others I am not an apostle, yet at least I am to you; for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

²Si pour d'autres je ne suis pas apôtre, je le suis au moins pour vous; car vous êtes le sceau de mon apostolat dans le Seigneur.

²ואם אינני שליח לאחרים אך לכם הנני שליח כי חותם שליחותי אתם באדנינו׃

³My defence to them that examine me is this.

³C'est là ma défense contre ceux qui m'accusent.

³וזאת התנצלותי כנגד הדנים אותי׃

⁴Have we no right to eat and to drink?

⁴N'avons-nous pas le droit de manger et de boire?

⁴האין רשות בידנו לאכל ולשתות׃

⁵Have we no right to lead about a wife that is a believer, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

⁵N'avons-nous pas le droit de mener avec nous une soeur qui soit notre femme, comme font les autres apôtres, et les frères du Seigneur, et Céphas?

⁵האין רשות בידנו להוליך עמנו אחות לאשה כמו גם השליחים האחרים וכמו אחי האדון וכמו כיפא׃

⁶Or I only and Barnabas, have we not a right to forbear working?

⁶Ou bien, est-ce que moi seul et Barnabas nous n'avons pas le droit de ne point travailler?

⁶אם לי לבדי ולבר נבא לא נתנה רשות להבטל ממלאכה׃

⁷What soldier ever serveth at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not the fruit thereof? Or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?

⁷Qui jamais fait le service militaire à ses propres frais? Qui est-ce qui plante une vigne, et n'en mange pas le fruit? Qui est-ce qui fait paître un troupeau, et ne se nourrit pas du lait du troupeau?

⁷מי הלך לצבא במשכרת של עצמו מי נטע כרם ולא יאכל את פריו מי רעה עדר ומחלב העדר לא יאכל׃

⁸Do I speak these things after the manner of men? or saith not the law also the same?

⁸Ces choses que je dis, n'existent-elles que dans les usages des hommes? la loi ne les dit-elle pas aussi?

⁸הכי לפי דרכו של אדם אני מדבר כזאת הלא גם התורה אמרת כן׃

⁹For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. Is it for the oxen that God careth,

⁹Car il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse: Tu n'emmuselleras point le boeuf quand il foule le grain. Dieu se met-il en peine des boeufs,

⁹כי כתוב בתורת משה לא תחסם שור בדישו הלשורים הושש האלהים׃

¹⁰or saith he it assuredly for our sake? Yea, for our sake it was written: because he that ploweth ought to plow in hope, and he that thresheth, [to thresh] in hope of partaking.

¹⁰ou parle-t-il uniquement à cause de nous? Oui, c'est à cause de nous qu'il a été écrit que celui qui laboure doit labourer avec espérance, et celui qui foule le grain fouler avec l'espérance d'y avoir part.

¹⁰או אך למעננו מדבר אכן למעננו נכתב כי החרש יחרש אלי תקוה והדש ידוש אלי תקוה לקחת חלקו בתקוה׃

¹¹If we sowed unto you spiritual things, is it a great matter if we shall reap your carnal things?

¹¹Si nous avons semé parmi vous les biens spirituels, est-ce une grosse affaire si nous moissonnons vos biens temporels.

¹¹אם זרענו בכם עניני הרוח הכי דבר גדול הוא אם נקצר מכם עניני הבשר׃

¹²If others partake of [this] right over you, do not we yet more? Nevertheless we did not use this right; but we bear all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ.

¹²Si d'autres jouissent de ce droit sur vous, n'est-ce pas plutôt à nous d'en jouir? Mais nous n'avons point usé de ce droit; au contraire, nous souffrons tout, afin de ne pas créer d'obstacle à l'Evangile de Christ.

¹²ואם לאחרים יש רשות עליכם הלא ביותר לנו אבל לא השתמשנו ברשות הזאת כי אם סבלנו את הכל לבלתי שום מעצור לבשורת המשיח׃

¹³Know ye not that they that minister about sacred things eat [of] the things of the temple, [and] they that wait upon the altar have their portion with the altar?

¹³Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui remplissent les fonctions sacrées sont nourris par le temple, que ceux qui servent à l'autel ont part à l'autel?

¹³הלא ידעתם כי עבדי עבדת הקדש אכלים מן הקדשים ומשרתי המזבח לקחים חלקם במזבח׃

¹⁴Even so did the Lord ordain that they that proclaim the gospel should live of the gospel.

¹⁴De même aussi, le Seigneur a ordonné à ceux qui annoncent l'Evangile de vivre de l'Evangile.

¹⁴כן תקן אדנינו גם הוא אשר יחיו המבשרים על הבשורה׃

¹⁵But I have used none of these things: and I write not these things that it may be so done in my case; for [it were] good for me rather to die, than that any man should make my glorifying void.

¹⁵Pour moi, je n'ai usé d'aucun de ces droits, et ce n'est pas afin de les réclamer en ma faveur que j'écris ainsi; car j'aimerais mieux mourir que de me laisser enlever ce sujet de gloire.

¹⁵ואנכי לא השתמשתי באחת מאלה וגם לא כתבתי זאת למען יעשה לי כזאת כי טוב לי המות מאשר ישים איש את תהלתי לריק׃

¹⁶For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of; for necessity is laid upon me; for woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel.

¹⁶Si j'annonce l'Evangile, ce n'est pas pour moi un sujet de gloire, car la nécessité m'en est imposée, et malheur à moi si je n'annonce pas l'Evangile!

¹⁶אם אבשר את הבשורה אין לי תהלה כי החובה מטלת עלי ואוי לי אם לא אבשר׃

¹⁷For if I do this of mine own will, I have a reward: but if not of mine own will, I have a stewardship intrusted to me.

¹⁷Si je le fais de bon coeur, j'en ai la récompense; mais si je le fais malgré moi, c'est une charge qui m'est confiée.

¹⁷כי אם ברצוני אעשה כן יהיה לי שכר ואם בעל כרחי פקדת משמרתי היא׃

¹⁸What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel without charge, so as not to use to the full my right in the gospel.

¹⁸Quelle est donc ma récompense? C'est d'offrir gratuitement l'Evangile que j'annonce, sans user de mon droit de prédicateur de l'Evangile.

¹⁸ועתה מה הוא שכרי הלא זה שאבשר בשורת המשיח בלא מחיר לבלתי השתמש להנאת עצמי ברשיון הנתן לי בבשורה׃

¹⁹For though I was free from all [men,] I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more.

¹⁹Car, bien que je sois libre à l'égard de tous, je me suis rendu le serviteur de tous, afin de gagner le plus grand nombre.

¹⁹כי בהיותי חפשי מכל עשיתי עצמי עבד לכל אדם למען אקנא את הרבים׃

²⁰And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, not being myself under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

²⁰Avec les Juifs, j'ai été comme Juif, afin de gagner les Juifs; avec ceux qui sont sous la loi, comme sous la loi quoique je ne sois pas moi-même sous la loi, afin de gagner ceux qui sont sous la loi;

²⁰ואהי ליהודים כיהודי לקנות היהודים ואשר הם תחת התורה הייתי להם כמו תחת התורה למען קנות אותם אשר תחת התורה׃

²¹to them that are without law, as without law, not being without law to God, but under law to Christ, that I might gain them that are without law.

²¹avec ceux qui sont sans loi, comme sans loi quoique je ne sois point sans la loi de Dieu, étant sous la loi de Christ, afin de gagner ceux qui sont sans loi.

²¹לאלה אשר בלי תורה הייתי כבלי תורה אף כי אינני בלי תורת האלהים כי אם תחת תורת המשיח אנכי למען קנות אותם אשר בלי תורה׃

²²To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak: I am become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some.

²²J'ai été faible avec les faibles, afin de gagner les faibles. Je me suis fait tout à tous, afin d'en sauver de toute manière quelques-uns.

²²ולחלשים הייתי כחלש לקנות את החלשים הכל לכלם נהייתי למען בכל דרך אושיע אחדים׃

²³And I do all things for the gospel's sake, that I may be a joint partaker thereof.

²³Je fais tout à cause de l'Evangile, afin d'y avoir part.

²³ואת זאת אני עשה בעבור הבשורה למען אקח חלקי בה גם אנכי׃

²⁴Know ye not that they that run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? Even so run; that ye may attain.

²⁴Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui courent dans le stade courent tous, mais qu'un seul remporte le prix? Courez de manière à le remporter.

²⁴הלא ידעתם כי רצי המרוצה באסטדין רצים כלם ורק אחד מהם ישיג את שכר הנצוח ככה רוצו למען תשיגהו׃

²⁵And every man that striveth in the games exerciseth self-control in all things. Now they [do it] to receive a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

²⁵Tous ceux qui combattent s'imposent toute espèce d'abstinences, et ils le font pour obtenir une couronne corruptible; mais nous, faisons-le pour une couronne incorruptible.

²⁵וכל העמד להאבק ינזר מכל דבר המה לקחת כתר נפסד ואנחנו לקחת כתר אשר איננו נפסד׃

²⁶I therefore so run, as not uncertainly; so fight I, as not beating the air:

²⁶Moi donc, je cours, non pas comme à l'aventure; je frappe, non pas comme battant l'air.

²⁶לכן הנני רץ לא כמו בחשכה הנני נלחם לא כהולם רוח׃

²⁷but I buffet my body, and bring it into bondage: lest by any means, after that I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

²⁷Mais je traite durement mon corps et je le tiens assujetti, de peur d'être moi-même rejeté, après avoir prêché aux autres.

²⁷כי אם אדכא את גופי ואשעבדנו פן אהיה אני הקורא לאחרים נאלח בעצמי׃
