¹And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

¹Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour le faire roi.

¹וילך רחבעם שכם כי שכם בא כל ישראל להמליך אתו׃

²And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt,

²Lorsque Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, eut des nouvelles, il était encore en Egypte, où il s'était enfui loin du roi Salomon, et c'était en Egypte qu'il demeurait.

²ויהי כשמע ירבעם בן נבט והוא עודנו במצרים אשר ברח מפני המלך שלמה וישב ירבעם במצרים׃

³and they sent and called him), that Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

³On l'envoya appeler. Alors Jéroboam et toute l'assemblée d'Israël vinrent à Roboam et lui parlèrent ainsi:

³וישלחו ויקראו לו ויבאו ירבעם וכל קהל ישראל וידברו אל רחבעם לאמר׃

⁴Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

⁴Ton père a rendu notre joug dur; toi maintenant, allège cette rude servitude et le joug pesant que nous a imposé ton père. Et nous te servirons.

⁴אביך הקשה את עלנו ואתה עתה הקל מעבדת אביך הקשה ומעלו הכבד אשר נתן עלינו ונעבדך׃

⁵And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

⁵Il leur dit: Allez, et revenez vers moi dans trois jours. Et le peuple s'en alla.

⁵ויאמר אליהם לכו עד שלשה ימים ושובו אלי וילכו העם׃

⁶And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?

⁶Le roi Roboam consulta les vieillards qui avaient été auprès de Salomon, son père, pendant sa vie, et il dit: Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?

⁶ויועץ המלך רחבעם את הזקנים אשר היו עמדים את פני שלמה אביו בהיתו חי לאמר איך אתם נועצים להשיב את העם הזה דבר׃

⁷And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

⁷Et voici ce qu'ils lui dirent: Si aujourd'hui tu rends service à ce peuple, si tu leur cèdes, et si tu leur réponds par des paroles bienveillantes, ils seront pour toujours tes serviteurs.

⁷וידבר אליו לאמר אם היום תהיה עבד לעם הזה ועבדתם ועניתם ודברת אליהם דברים טובים והיו לך עבדים כל הימים׃

⁸But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him.

⁸Mais Roboam laissa le conseil que lui donnaient les vieillards, et il consulta les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et qui l'entouraient.

⁸ויעזב את עצת הזקנים אשר יעצהו ויועץ את הילדים אשר גדלו אתו אשר העמדים לפניו׃

⁹And he said unto them, What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?

⁹Il leur dit: Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple qui me tient ce langage: Allège le joug que nous a imposé ton père?

⁹ויאמר אליהם מה אתם נועצים ונשיב דבר את העם הזה אשר דברו אלי לאמר הקל מן העל אשר נתן אביך עלינו׃

¹⁰And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou speak unto them, My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.

¹⁰Et voici ce que lui dirent les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui: Tu parleras ainsi à ce peuple qui t'a tenu ce langage: Ton père a rendu notre joug pesant, et toi, allège-le-nous! tu leur parleras ainsi: Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père.

¹⁰וידברו אליו הילדים אשר גדלו אתו לאמר כה תאמר לעם הזה אשר דברו אליך לאמר אביך הכביד את עלנו ואתה הקל מעלינו כה תדבר אליהם קטני עבה ממתני אבי׃

¹¹And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

¹¹Maintenant, mon père vous a chargés d'un joug pesant, et moi je vous le rendrai plus pesant; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

¹¹ועתה אבי העמיס עליכם על כבד ואני אוסיף על עלכם אבי יסר אתכם בשוטים ואני איסר אתכם בעקרבים׃

¹²So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come to me again the third day.

¹²Jéroboam et tout le peuple vinrent à Roboam le troisième jour, suivant ce qu'avait dit le roi: Revenez vers moi dans trois jours.

¹²ויבו ירבעם וכל העם אל רחבעם ביום השלישי כאשר דבר המלך לאמר שובו אלי ביום השלישי׃

¹³And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him,

¹³Le roi répondit durement au peuple. Il laissa le conseil que lui avaient donné les vieillards,

¹³ויען המלך את העם קשה ויעזב את עצת הזקנים אשר יעצהו׃

¹⁴and spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

¹⁴et il leur parla ainsi d'après le conseil des jeunes gens: Mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, et moi je vous le rendrai plus pesant; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

¹⁴וידבר אליהם כעצת הילדים לאמר אבי הכביד את עלכם ואני אסיף על עלכם אבי יסר אתכם בשוטים ואני איסר אתכם בעקרבים׃

¹⁵So the king hearkened not unto the people; for it was a thing brought about of Jehovah, that he might establish his word, which Jehovah spake by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

¹⁵Ainsi le roi n'écouta point le peuple; car cela fut dirigé par l'Eternel, en vue de l'accomplissement de la parole que l'Eternel avait dite par Achija de Silo à Jéroboam, fils de Nebath.

¹⁵ולא שמע המלך אל העם כי היתה סבה מעם יהוה למען הקים את דברו אשר דבר יהוה ביד אחיה השילני אל ירבעם בן נבט׃

¹⁶And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

¹⁶Lorsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne l'écoutait pas, le peuple répondit au roi: Quelle part avons-nous avec David? Nous n'avons point d'héritage avec le fils d'Isaï! A tes tentes, Israël! Maintenant, pourvois à ta maison, David! Et Israël s'en alla dans ses tentes.

¹⁶וירא כל ישראל כי לא שמע המלך אליהם וישבו העם את המלך דבר לאמר מה לנו חלק בדוד ולא נחלה בבן ישי לאהליך ישראל עתה ראה ביתך דוד וילך ישראל לאהליו׃

¹⁷But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

¹⁷Les enfants d'Israël qui habitaient les villes de Juda furent les seuls sur qui régna Roboam.

¹⁷ובני ישראל הישבים בערי יהודה וימלך עליהם רחבעם׃

¹⁸Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to taskwork; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

¹⁸Alors le roi Roboam envoya Adoram, qui était préposé aux impôts. Mais Adoram fut lapidé par tout Israël, et il mourut. Et le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur un char, pour s'enfuir à Jérusalem.

¹⁸וישלח המלך רחבעם את אדרם אשר על המס וירגמו כל ישראל בו אבן וימת והמלך רחבעם התאמץ לעלות במרכבה לנוס ירושלם׃

¹⁹So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

¹⁹C'est ainsi qu'Israël s'est détaché de la maison de David jusqu'à ce jour.

¹⁹ויפשעו ישראל בבית דוד עד היום הזה׃

²⁰And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was returned, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

²⁰Tout Israël ayant appris que Jéroboam était de retour, ils l'envoyèrent appeler dans l'assemblée, et ils le firent roi sur tout Israël. La tribu de Juda fut la seule qui suivit la maison de David.

²⁰ויהי כשמע כל ישראל כי שב ירבעם וישלחו ויקראו אתו אל העדה וימליכו אתו על כל ישראל לא היה אחרי בית דוד זולתי שבט יהודה לבדו׃

²¹And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, that were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

²¹Roboam, arrivé à Jérusalem, rassembla toute la maison de Juda et la tribu de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille hommes d'élite propres à la guerre, pour qu'ils combattissent contre la maison d'Israël afin de la ramener sous la domination de Roboam, fils de Salomon.

²¹ויבאו רחבעם ירושלם ויקהל את כל בית יהודה ואת שבט בנימן מאה ושמנים אלף בחור עשה מלחמה להלחם עם בית ישראל להשיב את המלוכה לרחבעם בן שלמה׃

²²But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

²²Mais la parole de Dieu fut ainsi adressée à Schemaeja, homme de Dieu:

²²ויהי דבר האלהים אל שמעיה איש האלהים לאמר׃

²³Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,

²³Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, et à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, et au reste du peuple. Et dis-leur:

²³אמר אל רחבעם בן שלמה מלך יהודה ואל כל בית יהודה ובנימין ויתר העם לאמר׃

²⁴Thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is of me. So they hearkened unto the word of Jehovah, and returned and went their way, according to the word of Jehovah.

²⁴Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Ne montez point, et ne faites pas la guerre à vos frères, les enfants d'Israël! Que chacun de vous retourne dans sa maison, car c'est de par moi que cette chose est arrivée. Ils obéirent à la parole de l'Eternel, et ils s'en retournèrent, selon la parole de l'Eternel.

²⁴כה אמר יהוה לא תעלו ולא תלחמון עם אחיכם בני ישראל שובו איש לביתו כי מאתי נהיה הדבר הזה וישמעו את דבר יהוה וישבו ללכת כדבר יהוה׃

²⁵Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and he went out from thence, and built Penuel.

²⁵Jéroboam bâtit Sichem sur la montagne d'Ephraïm, et il y demeura; puis il en sortit, et bâtit Penuel.

²⁵ויבן ירבעם את שכם בהר אפרים וישב בה ויצא משם ויבן את פנואל׃

²⁶And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now will the kingdom return to the house of David:

²⁶Jéroboam dit en son coeur: Le royaume pourrait bien maintenant retourner à la maison de David.

²⁶ויאמר ירבעם בלבו עתה תשוב הממלכה לבית דוד׃

²⁷if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of Jehovah at Jerusalem, then will the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.

²⁷Si ce peuple monte à Jérusalem pour faire des sacrifices dans la maison de l'Eternel, le coeur de ce peuple retournera à son seigneur, à Roboam, roi de Juda, et ils me tueront et retourneront à Roboam, roi de Juda.

²⁷אם יעלה העם הזה לעשות זבחים בבית יהוה בירושלם ושב לב העם הזה אל אדניהם אל רחבעם מלך יהודה והרגני ושבו אל רחבעם מלך יהודה׃

²⁸Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

²⁸Après s'être consulté, le roi fit deux veaux d'or, et il dit au peuple: Assez longtemps vous êtes montés à Jérusalem; Israël! voici ton Dieu, qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte.

²⁸ויועץ המלך ויעש שני עגלי זהב ויאמר אלהם רב לכם מעלות ירושלם הנה אלהיך ישראל אשר העלוך מארץ מצרים׃

²⁹And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan.

²⁹Il plaça l'un de ces veaux à Béthel, et il mit l'autre à Dan.

²⁹וישם את האחד בבית אל ואת האחד נתן בדן׃

³⁰And this thing became a sin; for the people went [to worship] before the one, even unto Dan.

³⁰Ce fut là une occasion de péché. Le peuple alla devant l'un des veaux jusqu'à Dan.

³⁰ויהי הדבר הזה לחטאת וילכו העם לפני האחד עד דן׃

³¹And he made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, that were not of the sons of Levi.

³¹Jéroboam fit une maison de hauts lieux, et il créa des sacrificateurs pris parmi tout le peuple et n'appartenant point aux fils de Lévi.

³¹ויעש את בית במות ויעש כהנים מקצות העם אשר לא היו מבני לוי׃

³²And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he went up unto the altar; so did he in Beth-el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places that he had made.

³²Il établit une fête au huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, comme la fête qui se célébrait en Juda, et il offrit des sacrifices sur l'autel. Voici ce qu'il fit à Béthel afin que l'on sacrifiât aux veaux qu'il avait faits. Il plaça à Béthel les prêtres des hauts lieux qu'il avait élevés.

³²ויעש ירבעם חג בחדש השמיני בחמשה עשר יום לחדש כחג אשר ביהודה ויעל על המזבח כן עשה בבית אל לזבח לעגלים אשר עשה והעמיד בבית אל את כהני הבמות אשר עשה׃

³³And he went up unto the altar which he had made in Beth-el on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart: and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up unto the altar, to burn incense.

³³Et il monta sur l'autel qu'il avait fait à Béthel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, mois qu'il avait choisi de son gré. Il fit une fête pour les enfants d'Israël, et il monta sur l'autel pour brûler des parfums.

³³ויעל על המזבח אשר עשה בבית אל בחמשה עשר יום בחדש השמיני בחדש אשר בדא מלבד ויעש חג לבני ישראל ויעל על המזבח להקטיר׃
