¹And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

¹Elie, le Thischbite, l'un des habitants de Galaad, dit à Achab: L'Eternel est vivant, le Dieu d'Israël, dont je suis le serviteur! il n'y aura ces années-ci ni rosée ni pluie, sinon à ma parole.

¹ויאמר אליהו התשבי מתשבי גלעד אל אחאב חי יהוה אלהי ישראל אשר עמדתי לפניו אם יהיה השנים האלה טל ומטר כי אם לפי דברי׃

²And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

²Et la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie, en ces mots:

²ויהי דבר יהוה אליו לאמר׃

³Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

³Pars d'ici, dirige-toi vers l'orient, et cache-toi près du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.

³לך מזה ופנית לך קדמה ונסתרת בנחל כרית אשר על פני הירדן׃

⁴And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

⁴Tu boiras de l'eau du torrent, et j'ai ordonné aux corbeaux de te nourrir là.

⁴והיה מהנחל תשתה ואת הערבים צויתי לכלכלך שם׃

⁵So he went and did according unto the word of Jehovah; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

⁵Il partit et fit selon la parole de l'Eternel, et il alla s'établir près du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.

⁵וילך ויעש כדבר יהוה וילך וישב בנחל כרית אשר על פני הירדן׃

⁶And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

⁶Les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la viande le matin, et du pain et de la viande le soir, et il buvait de l'eau du torrent.

⁶והערבים מביאים לו לחם ובשר בבקר ולחם ובשר בערב ומן הנחל ישתה׃

⁷And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

⁷Mais au bout d'un certain temps le torrent fut à sec, car il n'était point tombé de pluie dans le pays.

⁷ויהי מקץ ימים וייבש הנחל כי לא היה גשם בארץ׃

⁸And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

⁸Alors la parole de l'Eternel lui fut adressée en ces mots:

⁸ויהי דבר יהוה אליו לאמר׃

⁹Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Sidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.

⁹Lève-toi, va à Sarepta, qui appartient à Sidon, et demeure là. Voici, j'y ai ordonné à une femme veuve de te nourrir.

⁹קום לך צרפתה אשר לצידון וישבת שם הנה צויתי שם אשה אלמנה לכלכלך׃

¹⁰So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹⁰Il se leva, et il alla à Sarepta. Comme il arrivait à l'entrée de la ville, voici, il y avait là une femme veuve qui ramassait du bois. Il l'appela, et dit: Va me chercher, je te prie, un peu d'eau dans un vase, afin que je boive.

¹⁰ויקם וילך צרפתה ויבא אל פתח העיר והנה שם אשה אלמנה מקששת עצים ויקרא אליה ויאמר קחי נא לי מעט מים בכלי ואשתה׃

¹¹And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

¹¹Et elle alla en chercher. Il l'appela de nouveau, et dit: Apporte-moi, je te prie, un morceau de pain dans ta main.

¹¹ותלך לקחת ויקרא אליה ויאמר לקחי נא לי פת לחם בידך׃

¹²And she said, As Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

¹²Et elle répondit: L'Eternel, ton Dieu, est vivant! je n'ai rien de cuit, je n'ai qu'une poignée de farine dans un pot et un peu d'huile dans une cruche. Et voici, je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, puis je rentrerai et je préparerai cela pour moi et pour mon fils; nous mangerons, après quoi nous mourrons.

¹²ותאמר חי יהוה אלהיך אם יש לי מעוג כי אם מלא כף קמח בכד ומעט שמן בצפחת והנני מקששת שנים עצים ובאתי ועשיתיהו לי ולבני ואכלנהו ומתנו׃

¹³And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it forth unto me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.

¹³Elie lui dit: Ne crains point, rentre, fais comme tu as dit. Seulement, prépare-moi d'abord avec cela un petit gâteau, et tu me l'apporteras; tu en feras ensuite pour toi et pour ton fils.

¹³ויאמר אליה אליהו אל תיראי באי עשי כדברך אך עשי לי משם עגה קטנה בראשנה והוצאת לי ולך ולבנך תעשי באחרנה׃

¹⁴For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that Jehovah sendeth rain upon the earth.

¹⁴Car ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: La farine qui est dans le pot ne manquera point et l'huile qui est dans la cruche ne diminuera point, jusqu'au jour où l'Eternel fera tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol.

¹⁴כי כה אמר יהוה אלהי ישראל כד הקמח לא תכלה וצפחת השמן לא תחסר עד יום תתן יהוה גשם על פני האדמה׃

¹⁵And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat [many] days.

¹⁵Elle alla, et elle fit selon la parole d'Elie. Et pendant longtemps elle eut de quoi manger, elle et sa famille, aussi bien qu'Elie.

¹⁵ותלך ותעשה כדבר אליהו ותאכל הוא והיא וביתה ימים׃

¹⁶The jar of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by Elijah.

¹⁶La farine qui était dans le pot ne manqua point, et l'huile qui était dans la cruche ne diminua point, selon la parole que l'Eternel avait prononcée par Elie.

¹⁶כד הקמח לא כלתה וצפחת השמן לא חסר כדבר יהוה אשר דבר ביד אליהו׃

¹⁷And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁷Après ces choses, le fils de la femme, maîtresse de la maison, devint malade, et sa maladie fut si violente qu'il ne resta plus en lui de respiration.

¹⁷ויהי אחר הדברים האלה חלה בן האשה בעלת הבית ויהי חליו חזק מאד עד אשר לא נותרה בו נשמה׃

¹⁸And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? thou art come unto me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son!

¹⁸Cette femme dit alors à Elie: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler le souvenir de mon iniquité, et pour faire mourir mon fils?

¹⁸ותאמר אל אליהו מה לי ולך איש האלהים באת אלי להזכיר את עוני ולהמית את בני׃

¹⁹And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

¹⁹Il lui répondit: Donne-moi ton fils. Et il le prit du sein de la femme, le monta dans la chambre haute où il demeurait, et le coucha sur son lit.

¹⁹ויאמר אליה תני לי את בנך ויקחהו מחיקה ויעלהו אל העליה אשר הוא ישב שם וישכבהו על מטתו׃

²⁰And he cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

²⁰Puis il invoqua l'Eternel, et dit: Eternel, mon Dieu, est-ce que tu affligerais, au point de faire mourir son fils, même cette veuve chez qui j'ai été reçu comme un hôte?

²⁰ויקרא אל יהוה ויאמר יהוה אלהי הגם על האלמנה אשר אני מתגורר עמה הרעות להמית את בנה׃

²¹And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.

²¹Et il s'étendit trois fois sur l'enfant, invoqua l'Eternel, et dit: Eternel, mon Dieu, je t'en prie, que l'âme de cet enfant revienne au dedans de lui!

²¹ויתמדד על הילד שלש פעמים ויקרא אל יהוה ויאמר יהוה אלהי תשב נא נפש הילד הזה על קרבו׃

²²And Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

²²L'Eternel écouta la voix d'Elie, et l'âme de l'enfant revint au dedans de lui, et il fut rendu à la vie.

²²וישמע יהוה בקול אליהו ותשב נפש הילד על קרבו ויחי׃

²³And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother; and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

²³Elie prit l'enfant, le descendit de la chambre haute dans la maison, et le donna à sa mère. Et Elie dit: Vois, ton fils est vivant.

²³ויקח אליהו את הילד וירדהו מן העליה הביתה ויתנהו לאמו ויאמר אליהו ראי חי בנך׃

²⁴And the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of Jehovah in thy mouth is truth.

²⁴Et la femme dit à Elie: Je reconnais maintenant que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de l'Eternel dans ta bouche est vérité.

²⁴ותאמר האשה אל אליהו עתה זה ידעתי כי איש אלהים אתה ודבר יהוה בפיך אמת׃
