1And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.
1Bien des jours s'écoulèrent, et la parole de l'Eternel fut ainsi adressée à Elie, dans la troisième année: Va, présente-toi devant Achab, et je ferai tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol.
1ויהי ימים רבים ודבר יהוה היה אל אליהו בשנה השלישית לאמר לך הראה אל אחאב ואתנה מטר על פני האדמה׃
2And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria.
2Et Elie alla, pour se présenter devant Achab. La famine était grande à Samarie.
2וילך אליהו להראות אל אחאב והרעב חזק בשמרון׃
3And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly:
3Et Achab fit appeler Abdias, chef de sa maison. -Or Abdias craignait beaucoup l'Eternel;
3ויקרא אחאב אל עבדיהו אשר על הבית ועבדיהו היה ירא את יהוה מאד׃
4for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
4et lorsque Jézabel extermina les prophètes de l'Eternel, Abdias prit cent prophètes qu'il cacha cinquante par cinquante dans une caverne, et il les avait nourris de pain et d'eau. -
4ויהי בהכרית איזבל את נביאי יהוה ויקח עבדיהו מאה נבאים ויחביאם חמשים איש במערה וכלכלם לחם ומים׃
5And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
5Achab dit à Abdias: Va par le pays vers toutes les sources d'eau et vers tous les torrents; peut-être se trouvera-t-il de l'herbe, et nous conserverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, et nous n'aurons pas besoin d'abattre du bétail.
5ויאמר אחאב אל עבדיהו לך בארץ אל כל מעיני המים ואל כל הנחלים אולי נמצא חציר ונחיה סוס ופרד ולוא נכרית מהבהמה׃
6So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
6Ils se partagèrent le pays pour le parcourir; Achab alla seul par un chemin, et Abdias alla seul par un autre chemin.
6ויחלקו להם את הארץ לעבר בה אחאב הלך בדרך אחד לבדו ועבדיהו הלך בדרך אחד לבדו׃
7And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah?
7Comme Abdias était en route, voici, Elie le rencontra. Abdias, l'ayant reconnu, tomba sur son visage, et dit: Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Elie?
7ויהי עבדיהו בדרך והנה אליהו לקראתו ויכרהו ויפל על פניו ויאמר האתה זה אדני אליהו׃
8And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here].
8Il lui répondit: C'est moi; va, dis à ton maître: Voici Elie!
8ויאמר לו אני לך אמר לאדניך הנה אליהו׃
9And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?
9Et Abdias dit: Quel péché ai-je commis, pour que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d'Achab, qui me fera mourir?
9ויאמר מה חטאתי כי אתה נתן את עבדך ביד אחאב להמיתני׃
10As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.
10L'Eternel est vivant! il n'est ni nation ni royaume où mon maître n'ait envoyé pour te chercher; et quand on disait que tu n'y étais pas, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation que l'on ne t'avait pas trouvé.
10חי יהוה אלהיך אם יש גוי וממלכה אשר לא שלח אדני שם לבקשך ואמרו אין והשביע את הממלכה ואת הגוי כי לא ימצאכה׃
11And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here].
11Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Elie!
11ועתה אתה אמר לך אמר לאדניך הנה אליהו׃
12And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.
12Puis, lorsque je t'aurai quitté l'esprit de l'Eternel te transportera je ne sais où; et j'irai informer Achab, qui ne te trouvera pas, et qui me tuera. Cependant ton serviteur craint l'Eternel dès sa jeunesse.
12והיה אני אלך מאתך ורוח יהוה ישאך על אשר לא אדע ובאתי להגיד לאחאב ולא ימצאך והרגני ועבדך ירא את יהוה מנערי׃
13Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
13N'a-t-on pas dit à mon seigneur ce que j'ai fait quand Jézabel tua les prophètes de l'Eternel? J'ai caché cent prophètes de l'Eternel, cinquante par cinquante dans une caverne, et je les ai nourris de pain et d'eau.
13הלא הגד לאדני את אשר עשיתי בהרג איזבל את נביאי יהוה ואחבא מנביאי יהוה מאה איש חמשים חמשים איש במערה ואכלכלם לחם ומים׃
14And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah [is here]; and he will slay me.
14Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Elie! Il me tuera.
14ועתה אתה אמר לך אמר לאדניך הנה אליהו והרגני׃
15And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.
15Mais Elie dit: L'Eternel des armées, dont je suis le serviteur, est vivant! aujourd'hui je me présenterai devant Achab.
15ויאמר אליהו חי יהוה צבאות אשר עמדתי לפניו כי היום אראה אליו׃
16So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
16Abdias, étant allé à la rencontre d'Achab, l'informa de la chose. Et Achab se rendit au-devant d'Elie.
16וילך עבדיהו לקראת אחאב ויגד לו וילך אחאב לקראת אליהו׃
17And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?
17A peine Achab aperçut-il Elie qu'il lui dit: Est-ce toi, qui jettes le trouble en Israël?
17ויהי כראות אחאב את אליהו ויאמר אחאב אליו האתה זה עכר ישראל׃
18And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.
18Elie répondit: Je ne trouble point Israël; c'est toi, au contraire, et la maison de ton père, puisque vous avez abandonné les commandements de l'Eternel et que tu es allé après les Baals.
18ויאמר לא עכרתי את ישראל כי אם אתה ובית אביך בעזבכם את מצות יהוה ותלך אחרי הבעלים׃
19Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel's table.
19Fais maintenant rassembler tout Israël auprès de moi, à la montagne du Carmel, et aussi les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d'Astarté qui mangent à la table de Jézabel.
19ועתה שלח קבץ אלי את כל ישראל אל הר הכרמל ואת נביאי הבעל ארבע מאות וחמשים ונביאי האשרה ארבע מאות אכלי שלחן איזבל׃
20So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
20Achab envoya des messagers vers tous les enfants d'Israël, et il rassembla les prophètes à la montagne du Carmel.
20וישלח אחאב בכל בני ישראל ויקבץ את הנביאים אל הר הכרמל׃
21And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
21Alors Elie s'approcha de tout le peuple, et dit: Jusqu'à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés? Si l'Eternel est Dieu, allez après lui; si c'est Baal, allez après lui! Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.
21ויגש אליהו אל כל העם ויאמר עד מתי אתם פסחים על שתי הסעפים אם יהוה האלהים לכו אחריו ואם הבעל לכו אחריו ולא ענו העם אתו דבר׃
22Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
22Et Elie dit au peuple: Je suis resté seul des prophètes de l'Eternel, et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal.
22ויאמר אליהו אל העם אני נותרתי נביא ליהוה לבדי ונביאי הבעל ארבע מאות וחמשים איש׃
23Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.
23Que l'on nous donne deux taureaux; qu'ils choisissent pour eux l'un des taureaux, qu'ils le coupent par morceaux, et qu'ils le placent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu; et moi, je préparerai l'autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.
23ויתנו לנו שנים פרים ויבחרו להם הפר האחד וינתחהו וישימו על העצים ואש לא ישימו ואני אעשה את הפר האחד ונתתי על העצים ואש לא אשים׃
24And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
24Puis invoquez le nom de votre dieu; et moi, j'invoquerai le nom de l'Eternel. Le dieu qui répondra par le feu, c'est celui-là qui sera Dieu. Et tout le peuple répondit, en disant: C'est bien!
24וקראתם בשם אלהיכם ואני אקרא בשם יהוה והיה האלהים אשר יענה באש הוא האלהים ויען כל העם ויאמרו טוב הדבר׃
25And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under.
25Elie dit aux prophètes de Baal: Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux, préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu; mais ne mettez pas le feu.
25ויאמר אליהו לנביאי הבעל בחרו לכם הפר האחד ועשו ראשנה כי אתם הרבים וקראו בשם אלהיכם ואש לא תשימו׃
26And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.
26Ils prirent le taureau qu'on leur donna, et le préparèrent; et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal, depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, en disant: Baal réponds nous! Mais il n'y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils sautaient devant l'autel qu'ils avaient fait.
26ויקחו את הפר אשר נתן להם ויעשו ויקראו בשם הבעל מהבקר ועד הצהרים לאמר הבעל עננו ואין קול ואין ענה ויפסחו על המזבח אשר עשה׃
27And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked.
27A midi, Elie se moqua d'eux, et dit: Criez à haute voix, puisqu'il est dieu; il pense à quelque chose, ou il est occupé, ou il est en voyage; peut-être qu'il dort, et il se réveillera.
27ויהי בצהרים ויהתל בהם אליהו ויאמר קראו בקול גדול כי אלהים הוא כי שיח וכי שיג לו וכי דרך לו אולי ישן הוא ויקץ׃
28And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.
28Et ils crièrent à haute voix, et ils se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances, jusqu'à ce que le sang coulât sur eux.
28ויקראו בקול גדול ויתגדדו כמשפטם בחרבות וברמחים עד שפך דם עליהם׃
29And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
29Lorsque midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu'au moment de la présentation de l'offrande. Mais il n'y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d'attention.
29ויהי כעבר הצהרים ויתנבאו עד לעלות המנחה ואין קול ואין ענה ואין קשב׃
30And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.
30Elie dit alors à tout le peuple: Approchez-vous de moi! Tout le peuple s'approcha de lui. Et Elie rétablit l'autel de l'Eternel, qui avait été renversé.
30ויאמר אליהו לכל העם גשו אלי ויגשו כל העם אליו וירפא את מזבח יהוה ההרוס׃
31And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.
31Il prit douze pierres d'après le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel l'Eternel avait dit: Israël sera ton nom;
31ויקח אליהו שתים עשרה אבנים כמספר שבטי בני יעקב אשר היה דבר יהוה אליו לאמר ישראל יהיה שמך׃
32And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
32et il bâtit avec ces pierres un autel au nom de l'Eternel. Il fit autour de l'autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures de semence.
32ויבנה את האבנים מזבח בשם יהוה ויעש תעלה כבית סאתים זרע סביב למזבח׃
33And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.
33Il arrangea le bois, coupa le taureau par morceaux, et le plaça sur le bois. Puis il dit: Remplissez d'eau quatre cruches, et versez-les sur l'holocauste et sur le bois.
33ויערך את העצים וינתח את הפר וישם על העצים׃
34And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.
34Il dit: Faites-le une seconde fois. Et ils le firent une seconde fois. Il dit: Faites-le une troisième fois. Et ils le firent une troisième fois.
34ויאמר מלאו ארבעה כדים מים ויצקו על העלה ועל העצים ויאמר שנו וישנו ויאמר שלשו וישלשו׃
35And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
35L'eau coula autour de l'autel, et l'on remplit aussi d'eau le fossé.
35וילכו המים סביב למזבח וגם את התעלה מלא מים׃
36And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
36Au moment de la présentation de l'offrande, Elie, le prophète, s'avança et dit: Eternel, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël! que l'on sache aujourd'hui que tu es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur, et que j'ai fait toutes ces choses par ta parole!
36ויהי בעלות המנחה ויגש אליהו הנביא ויאמר יהוה אלהי אברהם יצחק וישראל היום יודע כי אתה אלהים בישראל ואני עבדך ובדבריך עשיתי את כל הדברים האלה׃
37Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and [that] thou hast turned their heart back again.
37Réponds-moi, Eternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que c'est toi, Eternel, qui es Dieu, et que c'est toi qui ramènes leur coeur!
37ענני יהוה ענני וידעו העם הזה כי אתה יהוה האלהים ואתה הסבת את לבם אחרנית׃
38Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
38Et le feu de l'Eternel tomba, et il consuma l'holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il absorba l'eau qui était dans le fossé.
38ותפל אש יהוה ותאכל את העלה ואת העצים ואת האבנים ואת העפר ואת המים אשר בתעלה לחכה׃
39And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.
39Quand tout le peuple vit cela, ils tombèrent sur leur visage et dirent: C'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu! C'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu!
39וירא כל העם ויפלו על פניהם ויאמרו יהוה הוא האלהים יהוה הוא האלהים׃
40and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
40Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, leur dit Elie; qu'aucun d'eux n'échappe! Et ils les saisirent. Elie les fit descendre au torrent de Kison, où il les égorgea.
40ויאמר אליהו להם תפשו את נביאי הבעל איש אל ימלט מהם ויתפשום ויורדם אליהו אל נחל קישון וישחטם שם׃
41And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.
41Et Elie dit à Achab: Monte, mange et bois; car il se fait un bruit qui annonce la pluie.
41ויאמר אליהו לאחאב עלה אכל ושתה כי קול המון הגשם׃
42So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.
42Achab monta pour manger et pour boire. Mais Elie monta au sommet du Carmel; et, se penchant contre terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux,
42ויעלה אחאב לאכל ולשתות ואליהו עלה אל ראש הכרמל ויגהר ארצה וישם פניו בין ברכו׃
43And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.
43et dit à son serviteur: Monte, regarde du côté de la mer. Le serviteur monta, il regarda, et dit: Il n'y a rien. Elie dit sept fois: Retourne.
43ויאמר אל נערו עלה נא הבט דרך ים ויעל ויבט ויאמר אין מאומה ויאמר שב שבע פעמים׃
44And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready [thy chariot], and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.
44A la septième fois, il dit: Voici un petit nuage qui s'élève de la mer, et qui est comme la paume de la main d'un homme. Elie dit: Monte, et dis à Achab: Attelle et descends, afin que la pluie ne t'arrête pas.
44ויהי בשבעית ויאמר הנה עב קטנה ככף איש עלה מים ויאמר עלה אמר אל אחאב אסר ורד ולא יעצרכה הגשם׃
45And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:
45En peu d'instants, le ciel s'obscurcit par les nuages, le vent s'établit, et il y eut une forte pluie. Achab monta sur son char, et partit pour Jizreel.
45ויהי עד כה ועד כה והשמים התקדרו עבים ורוח ויהי גשם גדול וירכב אחאב וילך יזרעאלה׃
46and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
46Et la main de l'Eternel fut sur Elie, qui se ceignit les reins et courut devant Achab jusqu'à l'entrée de Jizreel.
46ויד יהוה היתה אל אליהו וישנס מתניו וירץ לפני אחאב עד באכה יזרעאלה׃
