¹And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

¹Achab rapporta à Jézabel tout ce qu'avait fait Elie, et comment il avait tué par l'épée tous les prophètes.

¹ויגד אחאב לאיזבל את כל אשר עשה אליהו ואת כל אשר הרג את כל הנביאים בחרב׃

²Then Jezebel send a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time.

²Jézabel envoya un messager à Elie, pour lui dire: Que les dieux me traitent dans toute leur rigueur, si demain, à cette heure, je ne fais de ta vie ce que tu as fait de la vie de chacun d'eux!

²ותשלח איזבל מלאך אל אליהו לאמר כה יעשון אלהים וכה יוספון כי כעת מחר אשים את נפשך כנפש אחד מהם׃

³And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

³Elie, voyant cela, se leva et s'en alla, pour sauver sa vie. Il arriva à Beer-Schéba, qui appartient à Juda, et il y laissa son serviteur.

³וירא ויקם וילך אל נפשו ויבא באר שבע אשר ליהודה וינח את נערו שם׃

⁴But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough; now, O Jehovah, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

⁴Pour lui, il alla dans le désert où, après une journée de marche, il s'assit sous un genêt, et demanda la mort, en disant: C'est assez! Maintenant, Eternel, prends mon âme, car je ne suis pas meilleur que mes pères.

⁴והוא הלך במדבר דרך יום ויבא וישב תחת רתם אחת וישאל את נפשו למות ויאמר רב עתה יהוה קח נפשי כי לא טוב אנכי מאבתי׃

⁵And he lay down and slept under a juniper-tree; and, behold, an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

⁵Il se coucha et s'endormit sous un genêt. Et voici, un ange le toucha, et lui dit: Lève-toi, mange.

⁵וישכב ויישן תחת רתם אחד והנה זה מלאך נגע בו ויאמר לו קום אכול׃

⁶And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

⁶Il regarda, et il y avait à son chevet un gâteau cuit sur des pierres chauffées et une cruche d'eau. Il mangea et but, puis se recoucha.

⁶ויבט והנה מראשתיו עגת רצפים וצפחת מים ויאכל וישת וישב וישכב׃

⁷And the angel of Jehovah came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee.

⁷L'ange de l'Eternel vint une seconde fois, le toucha, et dit: Lève-toi, mange, car le chemin est trop long pour toi.

⁷וישב מלאך יהוה שנית ויגע בו ויאמר קום אכל כי רב ממך הדרך׃

⁸And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

⁸Il se leva, mangea et but; et avec la force que lui donna cette nourriture, il marcha quarante jours et quarante nuits jusqu'à la montagne de Dieu, à Horeb.

⁸ויקם ויאכל וישתה וילך בכח האכילה ההיא ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה עד הר האלהים חרב׃

⁹And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Jehovah came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

⁹Et là, il entra dans la caverne, et il y passa la nuit. Et voici, la parole de l'Eternel lui fut adressée, en ces mots: Que fais-tu ici, Elie?

⁹ויבא שם אל המערה וילן שם והנה דבר יהוה אליו ויאמר לו מה לך פה אליהו׃

¹⁰And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

¹⁰Il répondit: J'ai déployé mon zèle pour l'Eternel, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d'Israël ont abandonné ton alliance, ils ont renversé tes autels, et ils ont tué par l'épée tes prophètes; je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'ôter la vie.

¹⁰ויאמר קנא קנאתי ליהוה אלהי צבאות כי עזבו בריתך בני ישראל את מזבחתיך הרסו ואת נביאיך הרגו בחרב ואותר אני לבדי ויבקשו את נפשי לקחתה׃

¹¹And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before Jehovah. And, behold, Jehovah passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before Jehovah; but Jehovah was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but Jehovah was not in the earthquake:

¹¹L'Eternel dit: Sors, et tiens-toi dans la montagne devant l'Eternel! Et voici, l'Eternel passa. Et devant l'Eternel, il y eut un vent fort et violent qui déchirait les montagnes et brisait les rochers: l'Eternel n'était pas dans le vent. Et après le vent, ce fut un tremblement de terre: l'Eternel n'était pas dans le tremblement de terre.

¹¹ויאמר צא ועמדת בהר לפני יהוה והנה יהוה עבר ורוח גדולה וחזק מפרק הרים ומשבר סלעים לפני יהוה לא ברוח יהוה ואחר הרוח רעש לא ברעש יהוה׃

¹²and after the earthquake a fire; but Jehovah was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

¹²Et après le tremblement de terre, un feu: l'Eternel n'était pas dans le feu. Et après le feu, un murmure doux et léger.

¹²ואחר הרעש אש לא באש יהוה ואחר האש קול דממה דקה׃

¹³And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

¹³Quand Elie l'entendit, il s'enveloppa le visage de son manteau, il sortit et se tint à l'entrée de la caverne. Et voici, une voix lui fit entendre ces paroles: Que fais-tu ici, Elie?

¹³ויהי כשמע אליהו וילט פניו באדרתו ויצא ויעמד פתח המערה והנה אליו קול ויאמר מה לך פה אליהו׃

¹⁴And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

¹⁴Il répondit: J'ai déployé mon zèle pour l'Eternel, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d'Israël ont abandonné ton alliance, ils ont renversé tes autels, et ils ont tué par l'épée tes prophètes; je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'ôter la vie.

¹⁴ויאמר קנא קנאתי ליהוה אלהי צבאות כי עזבו בריתך בני ישראל את מזבחתיך הרסו ואת נביאיך הרגו בחרב ואותר אני לבדי ויבקשו את נפשי לקחתה׃

¹⁵And Jehovah said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;

¹⁵L'Eternel lui dit: Va, reprends ton chemin par le désert jusqu'à Damas; et quand tu seras arrivé, tu oindras Hazaël pour roi de Syrie.

¹⁵ויאמר יהוה אליו לך שוב לדרכך מדברה דמשק ובאת ומשחת את חזאל למלך על ארם׃

¹⁶and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

¹⁶Tu oindras aussi Jéhu, fils de Nimschi, pour roi d'Israël; et tu oindras Elisée, fils de Schaphath, d'Abel-Mehola, pour prophète à ta place.

¹⁶ואת יהוא בן נמשי תמשח למלך על ישראל ואת אלישע בן שפט מאבל מחולה תמשח לנביא תחתיך׃

¹⁷And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

¹⁷Et il arrivera que celui qui échappera à l'épée de Hazaël, Jéhu le fera mourir; et celui qui échappera à l'épée de Jéhu, Elisée le fera mourir.

¹⁷והיה הנמלט מחרב חזאל ימית יהוא והנמלט מחרב יהוא ימית אלישע׃

¹⁸Yet will I leave [me] seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

¹⁸Mais je laisserai en Israël sept mille hommes, tous ceux qui n'ont point fléchi les genoux devant Baal, et dont la bouche ne l'a point baisé.

¹⁸והשארתי בישראל שבעת אלפים כל הברכים אשר לא כרעו לבעל וכל הפה אשר לא נשק לו׃

¹⁹So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke [of oxen] before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over unto him, and cast his mantle upon him.

¹⁹Elie partit de là, et il trouva Elisée, fils de Schaphath, qui labourait. Il y avait devant lui douze paires de boeufs, et il était avec la douzième. Elie s'approcha de lui, et il jeta sur lui son manteau.

¹⁹וילך משם וימצא את אלישע בן שפט והוא חרש שנים עשר צמדים לפניו והוא בשנים העשר ויעבר אליהו אליו וישלך אדרתו אליו׃

²⁰And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again; for what have I done to thee?

²⁰Elisée, quittant ses boeufs, courut après Elie, et dit: Laisse-moi embrasser mon père et ma mère, et je te suivrai. Elie lui répondit: Va, et reviens; car pense à ce que je t'ai fait.

²⁰ויעזב את הבקר וירץ אחרי אליהו ויאמר אשקה נא לאבי ולאמי ואלכה אחריך ויאמר לו לך שוב כי מה עשיתי לך׃

²¹And he returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

²¹Après s'être éloigné d'Elie, il revint prendre une paire de boeufs, qu'il offrit en sacrifice; avec l'attelage des boeufs, il fit cuire leur chair, et la donna à manger au peuple. Puis il se leva, suivit Elie, et fut à son service.

²¹וישב מאחריו ויקח את צמד הבקר ויזבחהו ובכלי הבקר בשלם הבשר ויתן לעם ויאכלו ויקם וילך אחרי אליהו וישרתהו׃
