1And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
1Samuel dit à tout Israël: Voici, j'ai écouté votre voix dans tout ce que vous m'avez dit, et j'ai établi un roi sur vous.
1ויאמר שמואל אל כל ישראל הנה שמעתי בקלכם לכל אשר אמרתם לי ואמליך עליכם מלך׃
2And now, behold, the king walketh before you; and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my youth unto this day.
2Et maintenant, voici le roi qui marchera devant vous. Pour moi, je suis vieux, j'ai blanchi, et mes fils sont avec vous; j'ai marché à votre tête, depuis ma jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour.
2ועתה הנה המלך מתהלך לפניכם ואני זקנתי ושבתי ובני הנם אתכם ואני התהלכתי לפניכם מנערי עד היום הזה׃
3Here I am: witness against me before Jehovah, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.
3Me voici! Rendez témoignage contre moi, en présence de l'Eternel et en présence de son oint. De qui ai-je pris le boeuf et de qui ai-je pris l'âne? Qui ai-je opprimé, et qui ai-je traité durement? De qui ai-je reçu un présent, pour fermer les yeux sur lui? Je vous le rendrai.
3הנני ענו בי נגד יהוה ונגד משיחו את שור מי לקחתי וחמור מי לקחתי ואת מי עשקתי את מי רצותי ומיד מי לקחתי כפר ואעלים עיני בו ואשיב לכם׃
4And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.
4Ils répondirent: Tu ne nous as point opprimés, et tu ne nous as point traités durement, et tu n'as rien reçu de la main de personne.
4ויאמרו לא עשקתנו ולא רצותנו ולא לקחת מיד איש מאומה׃
5And he said unto them, Jehovah is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand. And they said, He is witness.
5Il leur dit encore: L'Eternel est témoin contre vous, et son oint est témoin, en ce jour, que vous n'avez rien trouvé dans mes mains. Et ils répondirent: Ils en sont témoins.
5ויאמר אליהם עד יהוה בכם ועד משיחו היום הזה כי לא מצאתם בידי מאומה ויאמר עד׃
6And Samuel said unto the people, It is Jehovah that appointed Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
6Alors Samuel dit au peuple: C'est l'Eternel qui a établi Moïse et Aaron, et qui a fait monter vos pères du pays d'Egypte.
6ויאמר שמואל אל העם יהוה אשר עשה את משה ואת אהרן ואשר העלה את אבתיכם מארץ מצרים׃
7Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before Jehovah concerning all the righteous acts of Jehovah, which he did to you and to your fathers.
7Maintenant, présentez-vous, et je vous jugerai devant l'Eternel sur tous les bienfaits que l'Eternel vous a accordés, à vous et à vos pères.
7ועתה התיצבו ואשפטה אתכם לפני יהוה את כל צדקות יהוה אשר עשה אתכם ואת אבותיכם׃
8When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto Jehovah, then Jehovah sent Moses and Aaron, who brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them to dwell in this place.
8Après que Jacob fut venu en Egypte, vos pères crièrent à l'Eternel, et l'Eternel envoya Moïse et Aaron, qui firent sortir vos pères d'Egypte et les firent habiter dans ce lieu.
8כאשר בא יעקב מצרים ויזעקו אבותיכם אל יהוה וישלח יהוה את משה ואת אהרן ויוציאו את אבתיכם ממצרים וישבום במקום הזה׃
9But they forgat Jehovah their God; and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them.
9Mais ils oublièrent l'Eternel, leur Dieu; et il les vendit entre les mains de Sisera, chef de l'armée de Hatsor, entre les mains des Philistins, et entre les mains du roi de Moab, qui leur firent la guerre.
9וישכחו את יהוה אלהיהם וימכר אתם ביד סיסרא שר צבא חצור וביד פלשתים וביד מלך מואב וילחמו בם׃
10And they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and have served the Baalim and the Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
10Ils crièrent encore à l'Eternel, et dirent: Nous avons péché, car nous avons abandonné l'Eternel, et nous avons servi les Baals et les Astartés; délivre-nous maintenant de la main de nos ennemis, et nous te servirons.
10ויזעקו אל יהוה ויאמר חטאנו כי עזבנו את יהוה ונעבד את הבעלים ואת העשתרות ועתה הצילנו מיד איבינו ונעבדך׃
11And Jehovah sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and ye dwelt in safety.
11Et l'Eternel envoya Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthé et Samuel, et il vous délivra de la main de vos ennemis qui vous entouraient, et vous demeurâtes en sécurité.
11וישלח יהוה את ירבעל ואת בדן ואת יפתח ואת שמואל ויצל אתכם מיד איביכם מסביב ותשבו בטח׃
12And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when Jehovah your God was your king.
12Puis, voyant que Nachasch, roi des fils d'Ammon, marchait contre vous, vous m'avez dit: Non! mais un roi régnera sur nous. Et cependant l'Eternel, votre Dieu, était votre roi.
12ותראו כי נחש מלך בני עמון בא עליכם ותאמרו לי לא כי מלך ימלך עלינו ויהוה אלהיכם מלככם׃
13Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have asked for: and, behold, Jehovah hath set a king over you.
13Voici donc le roi que vous avez choisi, que vous avez demandé; voici, l'Eternel a mis sur vous un roi.
13ועתה הנה המלך אשר בחרתם אשר שאלתם והנה נתן יהוה עליכם מלך׃
14If ye will fear Jehovah, and serve him, and hearken unto his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, and both ye and also the king that reigneth over you be followers of Jehovah your God, [well]:
14Si vous craignez l'Eternel, si vous le servez, si vous obéissez à sa voix, et si vous n'êtes point rebelles à la parole de l'Eternel, vous vous attacherez à l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous et le roi qui règne sur vous.
14אם תיראו את יהוה ועבדתם אתו ושמעתם בקלו ולא תמרו את פי יהוה והיתם גם אתם וגם המלך אשר מלך עליכם אחר יהוה אלהיכם׃
15but if ye will not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah, but rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, then will the hand of Jehovah be against you, as it was against your fathers.
15Mais si vous n'obéissez pas à la voix de l'Eternel, et si vous êtes rebelles à la parole de l'Eternel, la main de l'Eternel sera contre vous, comme elle a été contre vos pères.
15ואם לא תשמעו בקול יהוה ומריתם את פי יהוה והיתה יד יהוה בכם ובאבתיכם׃
16Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which Jehovah will do before your eyes.
16Attendez encore ici, et voyez le prodige que l'Eternel va opérer sous vos yeux.
16גם עתה התיצבו וראו את הדבר הגדול הזה אשר יהוה עשה לעיניכם׃
17Is it not wheat harvest to-day? I will call unto Jehovah, that he may send thunder and rain; and ye shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of Jehovah, in asking you a king.
17Ne sommes-nous pas à la moisson des blés? J'invoquerai l'Eternel, et il enverra du tonnerre et de la pluie. Sachez alors et voyez combien vous avez eu tort aux yeux de l'Eternel de demander pour vous un roi.
17הלוא קציר חטים היום אקרא אל יהוה ויתן קלות ומטר ודעו וראו כי רעתכם רבה אשר עשיתם בעיני יהוה לשאול לכם מלך׃
18So Samuel called unto Jehovah; and Jehovah sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared Jehovah and Samuel.
18Samuel invoqua l'Eternel, et l'Eternel envoya ce même jour du tonnerre et de la pluie. Tout le peuple eut une grande crainte de l'Eternel et de Samuel.
18ויקרא שמואל אל יהוה ויתן יהוה קלת ומטר ביום ההוא ויירא כל העם מאד את יהוה ואת שמואל׃
19And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto Jehovah thy God, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins [this] evil, to ask us a king.
19Et tout le peuple dit à Samuel: Prie l'Eternel, ton Dieu, pour tes serviteurs, afin que nous ne mourions pas; car nous avons ajouté à tous nos péchés le tort de demander pour nous un roi.
19ויאמרו כל העם אל שמואל התפלל בעד עבדיך אל יהוה אלהיך ואל נמות כי יספנו על כל חטאתינו רעה לשאל לנו מלך׃
20And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not; ye have indeed done all this evil; yet turn not aside from following Jehovah, but serve Jehovah with all your heart:
20Samuel dit au peuple: N'ayez point de crainte! Vous avez fait tout ce mal; mais ne vous détournez pas de l'Eternel, et servez l'Eternel de tout votre coeur.
20ויאמר שמואל אל העם אל תיראו אתם עשיתם את כל הרעה הזאת אך אל תסורו מאחרי יהוה ועבדתם את יהוה בכל לבבכם׃
21and turn ye not aside; for [then would ye go] after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain.
21Ne vous en détournez pas; sinon, vous iriez après des choses de néant, qui n'apportent ni profit ni délivrance, parce que ce sont des choses de néant.
21ולא תסורו כי אחרי התהו אשר לא יועילו ולא יצילו כי תהו המה׃
22For Jehovah will not forsake his people for his great name's sake, because it hath pleased Jehovah to make you a people unto himself.
22L'Eternel n'abandonnera point son peuple, à cause de son grand nom, car l'Eternel a résolu de faire de vous son peuple.
22כי לא יטש יהוה את עמו בעבור שמו הגדול כי הואיל יהוה לעשות אתכם לו לעם׃
23Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against Jehovah in ceasing to pray for you: but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
23Loin de moi aussi de pécher contre l'Eternel, de cesser de prier pour vous! Je vous enseignerai le bon et le droit chemin.
23גם אנכי חלילה לי מחטא ליהוה מחדל להתפלל בעדכם והוריתי אתכם בדרך הטובה והישרה׃
24Only fear Jehovah, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things he hath done for you.
24Craignez seulement l'Eternel, et servez-le fidèlement de tout votre coeur; car voyez quelle puissance il déploie parmi vous.
24אך יראו את יהוה ועבדתם אתו באמת בכל לבבכם כי ראו את אשר הגדל עמכם׃
25But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.
25Mais si vous faites le mal, vous périrez, vous et votre roi.
25ואם הרע תרעו גם אתם גם מלככם תספו׃
