1Saul was [forty] years old when he began to reign; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

1בן שנה שאול במלכו ושתי שנים מלך על ישראל׃
2Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel, whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mount of Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
2Saül choisit trois mille hommes d'Israël: deux mille étaient avec lui à Micmasch et sur la montagne de Béthel, et mille étaient avec Jonathan à Guibea de Benjamin. Il renvoya le reste du peuple, chacun à sa tente.
2ויבחר לו שאול שלשת אלפים מישראל ויהיו עם שאול אלפים במכמש ובהר בית אל ואלף היו עם יונתן בגבעת בנימין ויתר העם שלח איש לאהליו׃
3And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba: and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
3Jonathan battit le poste des Philistins qui était à Guéba, et les Philistins l'apprirent. Saül fit sonner de la trompette dans tout le pays, en disant: Que les Hébreux écoutent!
3ויך יונתן את נציב פלשתים אשר בגבע וישמעו פלשתים ושאול תקע בשופר בכל הארץ לאמר ישמעו העברים׃
4And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.
4Tout Israël entendit que l'on disait: Saül a battu le poste des Philistins, et Israël se rend odieux aux Philistins. Et le peuple fut convoqué auprès de Saül à Guilgal.
4וכל ישראל שמעו לאמר הכה שאול את נציב פלשתים וגם נבאש ישראל בפלשתים ויצעקו העם אחרי שאול הגלגל׃
5And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven.
5Les Philistins s'assemblèrent pour combattre Israël. Ils avaient mille chars et six mille cavaliers, et ce peuple était innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer. Ils vinrent camper à Micmasch, à l'orient de Beth-Aven.
5ופלשתים נאספו להלחם עם ישראל שלשים אלף רכב וששת אלפים פרשים ועם כחול אשר על שפת הים לרב ויעלו ויחנו במכמש קדמת בית און׃
6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.
6Les hommes d'Israël se virent à l'extrémité, car ils étaient serrés de près, et ils se cachèrent dans les cavernes, dans les buissons, dans les rochers, dans les tours et dans les citernes.
6ואיש ישראל ראו כי צר לו כי נגש העם ויתחבאו העם במערות ובחוחים ובסלעים ובצרחים ובברות׃
7Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
7Il y eut aussi des Hébreux qui passèrent le Jourdain, pour aller au pays de Gad et de Galaad. Saül était encore à Guilgal, et tout le peuple qui se trouvait auprès de lui tremblait.
7ועברים עברו את הירדן ארץ גד וגלעד ושאול עודנו בגלגל וכל העם חרדו אחריו׃
8And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel [had appointed]: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
8Il attendit sept jours, selon le terme fixé par Samuel. Mais Samuel n'arrivait pas à Guilgal, et le peuple se dispersait loin de Saül.
8וייחל שבעת ימים למועד אשר שמואל ולא בא שמואל הגלגל ויפץ העם מעליו׃
9And Saul said, Bring hither the burnt-offering to me, and the peace-offerings. And he offered the burnt-offering.
9Alors Saül dit: Amenez-moi l'holocauste et les sacrifices d'actions de grâces. Et il offrit l'holocauste.
9ויאמר שאול הגשו אלי העלה והשלמים ויעל העלה׃
10And it came to pass that, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
10Comme il achevait d'offrir l'holocauste, voici, Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit au-devant de lui pour le saluer.
10ויהי ככלתו להעלות העלה והנה שמואל בא ויצא שאול לקראתו לברכו׃
11And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash;
11Samuel dit: Qu'as-tu fait? Saül répondit: Lorsque j'ai vu que le peuple se dispersait loin de moi, que tu n'arrivais pas au terme fixé, et que les Philistins étaient assemblés à Micmasch,
11ויאמר שמואל מה עשית ויאמר שאול כי ראיתי כי נפץ העם מעלי ואתה לא באת למועד הימים ופלשתים נאספים מכמש׃
12therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of Jehovah: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt-offering.
12je me suis dit: Les Philistins vont descendre contre moi à Guilgal, et je n'ai pas imploré l'Eternel! C'est alors que je me suis fait violence et que j'ai offert l'holocauste.
12ואמר עתה ירדו פלשתים אלי הגלגל ופני יהוה לא חליתי ואתאפק ואעלה העלה׃
13And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of Jehovah thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would Jehovah have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
13Samuel dit à Saül: Tu as agi en insensé, tu n'as pas observé le commandement que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'avait donné. L'Eternel aurait affermi pour toujours ton règne sur Israël;
13ויאמר שמואל אל שאול נסכלת לא שמרת את מצות יהוה אלהיך אשר צוך כי עתה הכין יהוה את ממלכתך אל ישראל עד עולם׃
14But now thy kingdom shall not continue: Jehovah hath sought him a man after his own heart, and Jehovah hath appointed him to be prince over his people, because thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.
14et maintenant ton règne ne durera point. L'Eternel s'est choisi un homme selon son coeur, et l'Eternel l'a destiné à être le chef de son peuple, parce que tu n'as pas observé ce que l'Eternel t'avait commandé.
14ועתה ממלכתך לא תקום בקש יהוה לו איש כלבבו ויצוהו יהוה לנגיד על עמו כי לא שמרת את אשר צוך יהוה׃
15And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
15Puis Samuel se leva, et monta de Guilgal à Guibea de Benjamin. Saül fit la revue du peuple qui se trouvait avec lui: il y avait environ six cents hommes.
15ויקם שמואל ויעל מן הגלגל גבעת בנימן ויפקד שאול את העם הנמצאים עמו כשש מאות איש׃
16And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
16Saül, son fils Jonathan, et le peuple qui se trouvait avec eux, avaient pris position à Guéba de Benjamin, et les Philistins campaient à Micmasch.
16ושאול ויונתן בנו והעם הנמצא עמם ישבים בגבע בנימן ופלשתים חנו במכמש׃
17And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;
17Il sortit du camp des Philistins trois corps pour ravager: l'un prit le chemin d'Ophra, vers le pays de Schual;
17ויצא המשחית ממחנה פלשתים שלשה ראשים הראש אחד יפנה אל דרך עפרה אל ארץ שועל׃
18and another company turned the way to Beth-horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looketh down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
18l'autre prit le chemin de Beth-Horon; et le troisième prit le chemin de la frontière qui regarde la vallée de Tseboïm, du côté du désert.
18והראש אחד יפנה דרך בית חרון והראש אחד יפנה דרך הגבול הנשקף על גי הצבעים המדברה׃
19Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
19On ne trouvait point de forgeron dans tout le pays d'Israël; car les Philistins avaient dit: Empêchons les Hébreux de fabriquer des épées ou des lances.
19וחרש לא ימצא בכל ארץ ישראל כי אמר פלשתים פן יעשו העברים חרב או חנית׃
20but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;
20Et chaque homme en Israël descendait chez les Philistins pour aiguiser son soc, son hoyau, sa hache et sa bêche,
20וירדו כל ישראל הפלשתים ללטוש איש את מחרשתו ואת אתו ואת קרדמו ואת מחרשתו׃
21yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads.
21quand le tranchant des bêches, des hoyaux, des tridents et des haches, était émoussé, et pour redresser les aiguillons.
21והיתה הפצירה פים למחרשת ולאתים ולשלש קלשון ולהקרדמים ולהציב הדרבן׃
22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
22Il arriva qu'au jour du combat il ne se trouvait ni épée ni lance entre les mains de tout le peuple qui était avec Saül et Jonathan; il ne s'en trouvait qu'auprès de Saül et de Jonathan, son fils.
22והיה ביום מלחמת ולא נמצא חרב וחנית ביד כל העם אשר את שאול ואת יונתן ותמצא לשאול וליונתן בנו׃
23And the garrison of the Philistines went out unto the pass of Michmash.
23Un poste de Philistins vint s'établir au passage de Micmasch.
23ויצא מצב פלשתים אל מעבר מכמש׃
