¹Now it fell upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armor, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on yonder side. But he told not his father.

¹Un jour, Jonathan, fils de Saül, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: Viens, et poussons jusqu'au poste des Philistins qui est là de l'autre côté. Et il n'en dit rien à son père.

¹ויהי היום ויאמר יונתן בן שאול אל הנער נשא כליו לכה ונעברה אל מצב פלשתים אשר מעבר הלז ולאביו לא הגיד׃

²And Saul abode in the uttermost part of Gibeah under the pomegranate-tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;

²Saül se tenait à l'extrémité de Guibea, sous le grenadier de Migron, et le peuple qui était avec lui formait environ six cents hommes.

²ושאול יושב בקצה הגבעה תחת הרמון אשר במגרון והעם אשר עמו כשש מאות איש׃

³and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of Jehovah in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

³Achija, fils d'Achithub, frère d'I-Kabod, fils de Phinées, fils d'Eli, sacrificateur de l'Eternel à Silo, portait l'éphod. Le peuple ne savait pas que Jonathan s'en fût allé.

³ואחיה בן אחטוב אחי איכבוד בן פינחס בן עלי כהן יהוה בשלו נשא אפוד והעם לא ידע כי הלך יונתן׃

⁴And between the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side, and a rocky crag on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

⁴Entre les passages par lesquels Jonathan cherchait à arriver au poste des Philistins, il y avait une dent de rocher d'un côté et une dent de rocher de l'autre côté, l'une portant le nom de Botsets et l'autre celui de Séné.

⁴ובין המעברות אשר בקש יונתן לעבר על מצב פלשתים שן הסלע מהעבר מזה ושן הסלע מהעבר מזה ושם האחד בוצץ ושם האחד סנה׃

⁵The one crag rose up on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.

⁵L'une de ces dents est au nord vis-à-vis de Micmasch, et l'autre au midi vis-à-vis de Guéba.

⁵השן האחד מצוק מצפון מול מכמש והאחד מנגב מול גבע׃

⁶And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armor, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that Jehovah will work for us; for there is no restraint to Jehovah to save by many or by few.

⁶Jonathan dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: Viens, et poussons jusqu'au poste de ces incirconcis. Peut-être l'Eternel agira-t-il pour nous, car rien n'empêche l'Eternel de sauver au moyen d'un petit nombre comme d'un grand nombre.

⁶ויאמר יהונתן אל הנער נשא כליו לכה ונעברה אל מצב הערלים האלה אולי יעשה יהוה לנו כי אין ליהוה מעצור להושיע ברב או במעט׃

⁷And his armorbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thy heart: turn thee, behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

⁷Celui qui portait ses armes lui répondit: Fais tout ce que tu as dans le coeur, n'écoute que ton sentiment, me voici avec toi prêt à te suivre.

⁷ויאמר לו נשא כליו עשה כל אשר בלבבך נטה לך הנני עמך כלבבך׃

⁸Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto the men, and we will disclose ourselves unto them.

⁸Hé bien! dit Jonathan, allons à ces gens et montrons-nous à eux.

⁸ויאמר יהונתן הנה אנחנו עברים אל האנשים ונגלינו אליהם׃

⁹If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

⁹S'ils nous disent: Arrêtez, jusqu'à ce que nous venions à vous! nous resterons en place, et nous ne monterons point vers eux.

⁹אם כה יאמרו אלינו דמו עד הגיענו אליכם ועמדנו תחתינו ולא נעלה אליהם׃

¹⁰But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up; for Jehovah hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be the sign unto us.

¹⁰Mais s'ils disent: Montez vers nous! nous monterons, car l'Eternel les livre entre nos mains. C'est là ce qui nous servira de signe.

¹⁰ואם כה יאמרו עלו עלינו ועלינו כי נתנם יהוה בידנו וזה לנו האות׃

¹¹And both of them disclosed themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

¹¹Ils se montrèrent tous deux au poste des Philistins, et les Philistins dirent: Voici les Hébreux qui sortent des trous où ils se sont cachés.

¹¹ויגלו שניהם אל מצב פלשתים ויאמרו פלשתים הנה עברים יצאים מן החרים אשר התחבאו שם׃

¹²And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will show you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armorbearer, Come up after me; for Jehovah hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.

¹²Et les hommes du poste s'adressèrent ainsi à Jonathan et à celui qui portait ses armes: Montez vers nous, et nous vous ferons savoir quelque chose. Jonathan dit à celui qui portait ses armes: Monte après moi, car l'Eternel les livre entre les mains d'Israël.

¹²ויענו אנשי המצבה את יונתן ואת נשא כליו ויאמרו עלו אלינו ונודיעה אתכם דבר ויאמר יונתן אל נשא כליו עלה אחרי כי נתנם יהוה ביד ישראל׃

¹³And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armorbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armorbearer slew them after him.

¹³Et Jonathan monta en s'aidant des mains et des pieds, et celui qui portait ses armes le suivit. Les Philistins tombèrent devant Jonathan, et celui qui portait ses armes donnait la mort derrière lui.

¹³ויעל יונתן על ידיו ועל רגליו ונשא כליו אחריו ויפלו לפני יונתן ונשא כליו ממותת אחריו׃

¹⁴And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armorbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were half a furrow's length in an acre of land.

¹⁴Dans cette première défaite, Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes tuèrent une vingtaine d'hommes, sur l'espace d'environ la moitié d'un arpent de terre.

¹⁴ותהי המכה הראשנה אשר הכה יונתן ונשא כליו כעשרים איש כבחצי מענה צמד שדה׃

¹⁵And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled; and the earth quaked: so there was an exceeding great trembling.

¹⁵L'effroi se répandit au camp, dans la contrée et parmi tout le peuple; le poste et ceux qui ravageaient furent également saisis de peur; le pays fut dans l'épouvante. C'était comme une terreur de Dieu.

¹⁵ותהי חרדה במחנה בשדה ובכל העם המצב והמשחית חרדו גם המה ותרגז הארץ ותהי לחרדת אלהים׃

¹⁶And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went [hither] and thither.

¹⁶Les sentinelles de Saül, qui étaient à Guibea de Benjamin, virent que la multitude se dispersait et allait de côté et d'autre.

¹⁶ויראו הצפים לשאול בגבעת בנימן והנה ההמון נמוג וילך והלם׃

¹⁷Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armorbearer were not there.

¹⁷Alors Saül dit au peuple qui était avec lui: Comptez, je vous prie, et voyez qui s'en est allé du milieu de nous. Ils comptèrent, et voici, il manquait Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes.

¹⁷ויאמר שאול לעם אשר אתו פקדו נא וראו מי הלך מעמנו ויפקדו והנה אין יונתן ונשא כליו׃

¹⁸And Saul said unto Ahijah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was [there] at that time with the children of Israel.

¹⁸Et Saül dit à Achija: Fais approcher l'arche de Dieu! -Car en ce temps l'arche de Dieu était avec les enfants d'Israël.

¹⁸ויאמר שאול לאחיה הגישה ארון האלהים כי היה ארון האלהים ביום ההוא ובני ישראל׃

¹⁹And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the tumult that was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thy hand.

¹⁹Pendant que Saül parlait au sacrificateur, le tumulte dans le camp des Philistins allait toujours croissant; et Saül dit au sacrificateur: Retire ta main!

¹⁹ויהי עד דבר שאול אל הכהן וההמון אשר במחנה פלשתים וילך הלוך ורב ויאמר שאול אל הכהן אסף ידך׃

²⁰And Saul and all the people that were with him were gathered together, and came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, [and there was] a very great discomfiture.

²⁰Puis Saül et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se rassemblèrent, et ils s'avancèrent jusqu'au lieu du combat; et voici, les Philistins tournèrent l'épée les uns contre les autres, et la confusion était extrême.

²⁰ויזעק שאול וכל העם אשר אתו ויבאו עד המלחמה והנה היתה חרב איש ברעהו מהומה גדולה מאד׃

²¹Now the Hebrews that were with the Philistines as beforetime, and that went up with them into the camp, [from the country] round about, even they also [turned] to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

²¹Il y avait parmi les Philistins, comme auparavant, des Hébreux qui étaient montés avec eux dans le camp, où ils se trouvaient disséminés, et ils se joignirent à ceux d'Israël qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathan.

²¹והעברים היו לפלשתים כאתמול שלשום אשר עלו עמם במחנה סביב וגם המה להיות עם ישראל אשר עם שאול ויונתן׃

²²Likewise all the men of Israel that had hid themselves in the hill-country of Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

²²Tous les hommes d'Israël qui s'étaient cachés dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, apprenant que les Philistins fuyaient, se mirent aussi à les poursuivre dans la bataille.

²²וכל איש ישראל המתחבאים בהר אפרים שמעו כי נסו פלשתים וידבקו גם המה אחריהם במלחמה׃

²³So Jehovah saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over by Beth-aven.

²³L'Eternel délivra Israël ce jour-là, et le combat se prolongea jusqu'au delà de Beth-Aven.

²³ויושע יהוה ביום ההוא את ישראל והמלחמה עברה את בית און׃

²⁴And the men of Israel were distressed that day; for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until it be evening, and I be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted food.

²⁴La journée fut fatigante pour les hommes d'Israël. Saül avait fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l'homme qui prendra de la nourriture avant le soir, avant que je me sois vengé de mes ennemis! Et personne n'avait pris de nourriture.

²⁴ואיש ישראל נגש ביום ההוא ויאל שאול את העם לאמר ארור האיש אשר יאכל לחם עד הערב ונקמתי מאיבי ולא טעם כל העם לחם׃

²⁵And all the people came into the forest; and there was honey upon the ground.

²⁵Tout le peuple était arrivé dans une forêt, où il y avait du miel à la surface du sol.

²⁵וכל הארץ באו ביער ויהי דבש על פני השדה׃

²⁶And when the people were come unto the forest, behold, the honey dropped: but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath.

²⁶Lorsque le peuple entra dans la forêt, il vit du miel qui coulait; mais nul ne porta la main à la bouche, car le peuple respectait le serment.

²⁶ויבא העם אל היער והנה הלך דבש ואין משיג ידו אל פיו כי ירא העם את השבעה׃

²⁷But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

²⁷Jonathan ignorait le serment que son père avait fait faire au peuple; il avança le bout du bâton qu'il avait à la main, le plongea dans un rayon de miel, et ramena la main à la bouche; et ses yeux furent éclaircis.

²⁷ויונתן לא שמע בהשביע אביו את העם וישלח את קצה המטה אשר בידו ויטבל אותה ביערת הדבש וישב ידו אל פיו ותראנה עיניו׃

²⁸Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth food this day. And the people were faint.

²⁸Alors quelqu'un du peuple, lui adressant la parole, dit: Ton père a fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l'homme qui prendra de la nourriture aujourd'hui! Or le peuple était épuisé.

²⁸ויען איש מהעם ויאמר השבע השביע אביך את העם לאמר ארור האיש אשר יאכל לחם היום ויעף העם׃

²⁹Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

²⁹Et Jonathan dit: Mon père trouble le peuple; voyez donc comme mes yeux se sont éclaircis, parce que j'ai goûté un peu de ce miel.

²⁹ויאמר יונתן עכר אבי את הארץ ראו נא כי ארו עיני כי טעמתי מעט דבש הזה׃

³⁰How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to-day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for now hath there been no great slaughter among the Philistines.

³⁰Certes, si le peuple avait aujourd'hui mangé du butin qu'il a trouvé chez ses ennemis, la défaite des Philistins n'aurait-elle pas été plus grande?

³⁰אף כי לוא אכל אכל היום העם משלל איביו אשר מצא כי עתה לא רבתה מכה בפלשתים׃

³¹And they smote of the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very faint;

³¹Ils battirent ce jour-là les Philistins depuis Micmasch jusqu'à Ajalon. Le peuple était très fatigué,

³¹ויכו ביום ההוא בפלשתים ממכמש אילנה ויעף העם מאד׃

³²and the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground; and the people did eat them with the blood.

³²et il se jeta sur le butin. Il prit des brebis, des boeufs et des veaux, il les égorgea sur la terre, et il en mangea avec le sang.

³²ויעש העם אל שלל ויקחו צאן ובקר ובני בקר וישחטו ארצה ויאכל העם על הדם׃

³³Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against Jehovah, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, ye have dealt treacherously: roll a great stone unto me this day.

³³On le rapporta à Saül, et l'on dit: Voici, le peuple pèche contre l'Eternel, en mangeant avec le sang. Saül dit: Vous commettez une infidélité; roulez à l'instant vers moi une grande pierre.

³³ויגידו לשאול לאמר הנה העם חטאים ליהוה לאכל על הדם ויאמר בגדתם גלו אלי היום אבן גדולה׃

³⁴And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against Jehovah in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

³⁴Puis il ajouta: Répandez-vous parmi le peuple, et dites à chacun de m'amener son boeuf ou sa brebis, et de l'égorger ici. Vous mangerez ensuite, et vous ne pécherez point contre l'Eternel, en mangeant avec le sang. Et pendant la nuit, chacun parmi le peuple amena son boeuf à la main, afin de l'égorger sur la pierre.

³⁴ויאמר שאול פצו בעם ואמרתם להם הגישו אלי איש שורו ואיש שיהו ושחטתם בזה ואכלתם ולא תחטאו ליהוה לאכל אל הדם ויגשו כל העם איש שורו בידו הלילה וישחטו שם׃

³⁵And Saul built an altar unto Jehovah: the same was the first altar that he built unto Jehovah.

³⁵Saül bâtit un autel à l'Eternel: ce fut le premier autel qu'il bâtit à l'Eternel.

³⁵ויבן שאול מזבח ליהוה אתו החל לבנות מזבח ליהוה׃

³⁶And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

³⁶Saül dit: Descendons cette nuit après les Philistins, pillons-les jusqu'à la lumière du matin, et n'en laissons pas un de reste. Ils dirent: Fais tout ce qui te semblera bon. Alors le sacrificateur dit: Approchons-nous ici de Dieu.

³⁶ויאמר שאול נרדה אחרי פלשתים לילה ונבזה בהם עד אור הבקר ולא נשאר בהם איש ויאמרו כל הטוב בעיניך עשה ויאמר הכהן נקרבה הלם אל האלהים׃

³⁷And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

³⁷Et Saül consulta Dieu: Descendrai-je après les Philistins? Les livreras-tu entre les mains d'Israël? Mais en ce moment il ne lui donna point de réponse.

³⁷וישאל שאול באלהים הארד אחרי פלשתים התתנם ביד ישראל ולא ענהו ביום ההוא׃

³⁸And Saul said, Draw nigh hither, all ye chiefs of the people; and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

³⁸Saül dit: Approchez ici, vous tous chefs du peuple; recherchez et voyez comment ce péché a été commis aujourd'hui.

³⁸ויאמר שאול גשו הלם כל פנות העם ודעו וראו במה היתה החטאת הזאת היום׃

³⁹For, as Jehovah liveth, who saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

³⁹Car l'Eternel, le libérateur d'Israël, est vivant! lors même que Jonathan, mon fils, en serait l'auteur, il mourrait. Et dans tout le peuple personne ne lui répondit.

³⁹כי חי יהוה המושיע את ישראל כי אם ישנו ביונתן בני כי מות ימות ואין ענהו מכל העם׃

⁴⁰Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

⁴⁰Il dit à tout Israël: Mettez-vous d'un côté; et moi et Jonathan, mon fils, nous serons de l'autre. Et le peuple dit à Saül: Fais ce qui te semblera bon.

⁴⁰ויאמר אל כל ישראל אתם תהיו לעבר אחד ואני ויונתן בני נהיה לעבר אחד ויאמרו העם אל שאול הטוב בעיניך עשה׃

⁴¹Therefore Saul said unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, Show the right. And Jonathan and Saul were taken [by lot]; but the people escaped.

⁴¹Saül dit à l'Eternel: Dieu d'Israël! fais connaître la vérité. Jonathan et Saül furent désignés, et le peuple fut libéré.

⁴¹ויאמר שאול אל יהוה אלהי ישראל הבה תמים וילכד יונתן ושאול והעם יצאו׃

⁴²And Saul said, Cast [lots] between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

⁴²Saül dit: Jetez le sort entre moi et Jonathan, mon fils. Et Jonathan fut désigné.

⁴²ויאמר שאול הפילו ביני ובין יונתן בני וילכד יונתן׃

⁴³Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did certainly taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand; and, lo, I must die.

⁴³Saül dit à Jonathan: Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait. Jonathan le lui déclara, et dit: J'ai goûté un peu de miel, avec le bout du bâton que j'avais à la main: me voici, je mourrai.

⁴³ויאמר שאול אל יונתן הגידה לי מה עשיתה ויגד לו יונתן ויאמר טעם טעמתי בקצה המטה אשר בידי מעט דבש הנני אמות׃

⁴⁴And Saul said, God do so and more also; for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

⁴⁴Et Saül dit: Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne meurs pas, Jonathan!

⁴⁴ויאמר שאול כה יעשה אלהים וכה יוסף כי מות תמות יונתן׃

⁴⁵And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? Far from it: as Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

⁴⁵Le peuple dit à Saül: Quoi! Jonathan mourrait, lui qui a opéré cette grande délivrance en Israël! Loin de là! L'Eternel est vivant! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de sa tête, car c'est avec Dieu qu'il a agi dans cette journée. Ainsi le peuple sauva Jonathan, et il ne mourut point.

⁴⁵ויאמר העם אל שאול היונתן ימות אשר עשה הישועה הגדולה הזאת בישראל חלילה חי יהוה אם יפל משערת ראשו ארצה כי עם אלהים עשה היום הזה ויפדו העם את יונתן ולא מת׃

⁴⁶Then Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

⁴⁶Saül cessa de poursuivre les Philistins, et les Philistins s'en allèrent chez eux.

⁴⁶ויעל שאול מאחרי פלשתים ופלשתים הלכו למקומם׃

⁴⁷Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he put [them] to the worse.

⁴⁷Après que Saül eut pris possession de la royauté sur Israël, il fit de tous côtés la guerre à tous ses ennemis, à Moab, aux enfants d'Ammon, à Edom, aux rois de Tsoba, et aux Philistins; et partout où il se tournait, il était vainqueur.

⁴⁷ושאול לכד המלוכה על ישראל וילחם סביב בכל איביו במואב ובבני עמון ובאדום ובמלכי צובה ובפלשתים ובכל אשר יפנה ירשיע׃

⁴⁸And he did valiantly, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that despoiled them.

⁴⁸Il manifesta sa force, battit Amalek, et délivra Israël de la main de ceux qui le pillaient.

⁴⁸ויעש חיל ויך את עמלק ויצל את ישראל מיד שסהו׃

⁴⁹Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishvi, and Malchishua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the first-born Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:

⁴⁹Les fils de Saül étaient Jonathan, Jischvi et Malkischua. Ses deux filles s'appelaient: l'aînée Mérab, et la plus jeune Mical.

⁴⁹ויהיו בני שאול יונתן וישוי ומלכי שוע ושם שתי בנתיו שם הבכירה מרב ושם הקטנה מיכל׃

⁵⁰and the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the captain of his host was Abner the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

⁵⁰Le nom de la femme de Saül était Achinoam, fille d'Achimaats. Le nom du chef de son armée était Abner, fils de Ner, oncle de Saül.

⁵⁰ושם אשת שאול אחינעם בת אחימעץ ושם שר צבאו אבינר בן נר דוד שאול׃

⁵¹And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

⁵¹Kis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d'Abner, étaient fils d'Abiel.

⁵¹וקיש אבי שאול ונר אבי אבנר בן אביאל׃

⁵²And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

⁵²Pendant toute la vie de Saül, il y eut une guerre acharnée contre les Philistins; et dès que Saül apercevait quelque homme fort et vaillant, il le prenait à son service.
