¹And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

¹David s'enfuit de Najoth, près de Rama. Il alla trouver Jonathan, et dit: Qu'ai-je fait? quel est mon crime, quel est mon péché aux yeux de ton père, pour qu'il en veuille à ma vie?

¹ויברח דוד מנוית ברמה ויבא ויאמר לפני יהונתן מה עשיתי מה עוני ומה חטאתי לפני אביך כי מבקש את נפשי׃

²And he said unto him, Far from it; thou shalt not die: behold, my father doeth nothing either great or small, but that he discloseth it unto me; and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

²Jonathan lui répondit: Loin de là! tu ne mourras point. Mon père ne fait aucune chose, grande ou petite, sans m'en informer; pourquoi donc mon père me cacherait-il celle-là? Il n'en est rien.

²ויאמר לו חלילה לא תמות הנה לו עשה אבי דבר גדול או דבר קטן ולא יגלה את אזני ומדוע יסתיר אבי ממני את הדבר הזה אין זאת׃

³And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father knoweth well that I have found favor in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

³David dit encore, en jurant: Ton père sait bien que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et il aura dit: Que Jonathan ne le sache pas; cela lui ferait de la peine. Mais l'Eternel est vivant et ton âme est vivante! il n'y a qu'un pas entre moi et la mort.

³וישבע עוד דוד ויאמר ידע ידע אביך כי מצאתי חן בעיניך ויאמר אל ידע זאת יהונתן פן יעצב ואולם חי יהוה וחי נפשך כי כפשע ביני ובין המות׃

⁴Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

⁴Jonathan dit à David: Je ferai pour toi ce que tu voudras.

⁴ויאמר יהונתן אל דוד מה תאמר נפשך ואעשה לך׃

⁵And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to-morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

⁵Et David lui répondit: Voici, c'est demain la nouvelle lune, et je devrais m'asseoir avec le roi pour manger; laisse-moi aller, et je me cacherai dans les champs jusqu'au soir du troisième jour.

⁵ויאמר דוד אל יהונתן הנה חדש מחר ואנכי ישב אשב עם המלך לאכול ושלחתני ונסתרתי בשדה עד הערב השלשית׃

⁶If thy father miss me at all, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Beth-lehem his city; for it is the yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

⁶Si ton père remarque mon absence, tu diras: David m'a prié de lui laisser faire une course à Bethléhem, sa ville, parce qu'il y a pour toute la famille un sacrifice annuel.

⁶אם פקד יפקדני אביך ואמרת נשאל נשאל ממני דוד לרוץ בית לחם עירו כי זבח הימים שם לכל המשפחה׃

⁷If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be wroth, then know that evil is determined by him.

⁷Et s'il dit: C'est bien! ton serviteur alors n'a rien à craindre; mais si la colère s'empare de lui, sache que le mal est résolu de sa part.

⁷אם כה יאמר טוב שלום לעבדך ואם חרה יחרה לו דע כי כלתה הרעה מעמו׃

⁸Therefore deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of Jehovah with thee: but if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

⁸Montre donc ton affection pour ton serviteur, puisque tu as fait avec ton serviteur une alliance devant l'Eternel. Et, s'il y a quelque crime en moi, ôte-moi la vie toi-même, car pourquoi me mènerais-tu jusqu'à ton père?

⁸ועשית חסד על עבדך כי בברית יהוה הבאת את עבדך עמך ואם יש בי עון המיתני אתה ועד אביך למה זה תביאני׃

⁹And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee; for if I should at all know that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

⁹Jonathan lui dit: Loin de toi la pensée que je ne t'informerai pas, si j'apprends que le mal est résolu de la part de mon père et menace de t'atteindre!

⁹ויאמר יהונתן חלילה לך כי אם ידע אדע כי כלתה הרעה מעם אבי לבוא עליך ולא אתה אגיד לך׃

¹⁰Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me if perchance thy father answer thee roughly?

¹⁰David dit à Jonathan: Qui m'informera dans le cas où ton père te répondrait durement?

¹⁰ויאמר דוד אל יהונתן מי יגיד לי או מה יענך אביך קשה׃

¹¹And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

¹¹Et Jonathan dit à David: Viens, sortons dans les champs. Et ils sortirent tous deux dans les champs.

¹¹ויאמר יהונתן אל דוד לכה ונצא השדה ויצאו שניהם השדה׃

¹²And Jonathan said unto David, Jehovah, the God of Israel, [be witness]: when I have sounded my father about this time to-morrow, [or] the third day, behold, if there be good toward David, shall I not then send unto thee, and disclose it unto thee?

¹²Jonathan dit à David: Je prends à témoin l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël! Je sonderai mon père demain ou après-demain; et, dans le cas où il serait bien disposé pour David, si je n'envoie vers toi personne pour t'en informer,

¹²ויאמר יהונתן אל דוד יהוה אלהי ישראל כי אחקר את אבי כעת מחר השלשית והנה טוב אל דוד ולא אז אשלח אליך וגליתי את אזנך׃

¹³Jehovah do so to Jonathan, and more also, should it please my father to do thee evil, if I disclose it not unto thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and Jehovah be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

¹³que l'Eternel traite Jonathan dans toute sa rigueur! Dans le cas où mon père trouverait bon de te faire du mal, je t'informerai aussi et je te laisserai partir, afin que tu t'en ailles en paix; et que l'Eternel soit avec toi, comme il a été avec mon père!

¹³כה יעשה יהוה ליהונתן וכה יסיף כי ייטב אל אבי את הרעה עליך וגליתי את אזנך ושלחתיך והלכת לשלום ויהי יהוה עמך כאשר היה עם אבי׃

¹⁴And thou shalt not only while yet I live show me the lovingkindness of Jehovah, that I die not;

¹⁴Si je dois vivre encore, veuille user envers moi de la bonté de l'Eternel; et si je meurs,

¹⁴ולא אם עודני חי ולא תעשה עמדי חסד יהוה ולא אמות׃

¹⁵but also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever; no, not when Jehovah hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

¹⁵ne retire jamais ta bonté envers ma maison, pas même lorsque l'Eternel retranchera chacun des ennemis de David de dessus la face de la terre.

¹⁵ולא תכרת את חסדך מעם ביתי עד עולם ולא בהכרת יהוה את איבי דוד איש מעל פני האדמה׃

¹⁶So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, [saying], And Jehovah will require it at the hand of David's enemies.

¹⁶Car Jonathan a fait alliance avec la maison de David. Que l'Eternel tire vengeance des ennemis de David!

¹⁶ויכרת יהונתן עם בית דוד ובקש יהוה מיד איבי דוד׃

¹⁷And Jonathan caused David to swear again, for the love that he had to him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

¹⁷Jonathan protesta encore auprès de David de son affection pour lui, car il l'aimait comme son âme.

¹⁷ויוסף יהונתן להשביע את דוד באהבתו אתו כי אהבת נפשו אהבו׃

¹⁸Then Jonathan said unto him, To-morrow is the new moon: and thou wilt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

¹⁸Jonathan lui dit: C'est demain la nouvelle lune; on remarquera ton absence, car ta place sera vide.

¹⁸ויאמר לו יהונתן מחר חדש ונפקדת כי יפקד מושבך׃

¹⁹And when thou hast stayed three days, thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

¹⁹Tu descendras le troisième jour jusqu'au fond du lieu où tu t'étais caché le jour de l'affaire, et tu resteras près de la pierre d'Ezel.

¹⁹ושלשת תרד מאד ובאת אל המקום אשר נסתרת שם ביום המעשה וישבת אצל האבן האזל׃

²⁰And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.

²⁰Je tirerai trois flèches du côté de la pierre, comme si je visais un but.

²⁰ואני שלשת החצים צדה אורה לשלח לי למטרה׃

²¹And, behold, I will send the lad, [saying], Go, find the arrows. If I say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee; take them, and come; for there is peace to thee and no hurt, as Jehovah liveth.

²¹Et voici, j'enverrai un jeune homme, et je lui dirai: Va, trouve les flèches. Si je lui dis: Voici, les flèches sont en deçà de toi, prends-les! alors viens, car il y a paix pour toi, et tu n'as rien à craindre, l'Eternel est vivant!

²¹והנה אשלח את הנער לך מצא את החצים אם אמר אמר לנער הנה החצים ממך והנה קחנו ובאה כי שלום לך ואין דבר חי יהוה׃

²²But if I say thus unto the boy, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way; for Jehovah hath sent thee away.

²²Mais si je dis au jeune homme: Voici, les flèches sont au delà de toi! alors va-t-en, car l'Eternel te renvoie.

²²ואם כה אמר לעלם הנה החצים ממך והלאה לך כי שלחך יהוה׃

²³And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, Jehovah is between thee and me for ever.

²³L'Eternel est à jamais témoin de la parole que nous nous sommes donnée l'un à l'autre.

²³והדבר אשר דברנו אני ואתה הנה יהוה ביני ובינך עד עולם׃

²⁴So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat food.

²⁴David se cacha dans les champs. C'était la nouvelle lune, et le roi prit place au festin pour manger.

²⁴ויסתר דוד בשדה ויהי החדש וישב המלך על הלחם לאכול׃

²⁵And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon the seat by the wall; and Jonathan stood up, and Abner sat by Saul's side: but David's place was empty.

²⁵Le roi s'assit comme à l'ordinaire sur son siège contre la paroi, Jonathan se leva, et Abner s'assit à côté de Saül; mais la place de David resta vide.

²⁵וישב המלך על מושבו כפעם בפעם אל מושב הקיר ויקם יהונתן וישב אבנר מצד שאול ויפקד מקום דוד׃

²⁶Nevertheless Saul spake not anything that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

²⁶Saül ne dit rien ce jour-là; car, pensa-t-il, c'est par hasard, il n'est pas pur, certainement il n'est pas pur.

²⁶ולא דבר שאול מאומה ביום ההוא כי אמר מקרה הוא בלתי טהור הוא כי לא טהור׃

²⁷And it came to pass on the morrow after the new moon, [which was] the second [day], that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to-day?

²⁷Le lendemain, second jour de la nouvelle lune, la place de David était encore vide. Et Saül dit à Jonathan, son fils: Pourquoi le fils d'Isaï n'a-t-il paru au repas ni hier ni aujourd'hui?

²⁷ויהי ממחרת החדש השני ויפקד מקום דוד ויאמר שאול אל יהונתן בנו מדוע לא בא בן ישי גם תמול גם היום אל הלחם׃

²⁸And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Beth-lehem:

²⁸Jonathan répondit à Saül: David m'a demandé la permission d'aller à Bethléhem.

²⁸ויען יהונתן את שאול נשאל נשאל דוד מעמדי עד בית לחם׃

²⁹and he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me [to be there]: and now, if I have found favor in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he is not come unto the king's table.

²⁹Il a dit: Laisse-moi aller, je te prie, car nous avons dans la ville un sacrifice de famille, et mon frère me l'a fait savoir; si donc j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, permets que j'aille en hâte voir mes frères. C'est pour cela qu'il n'est point venu à la table du roi.

²⁹ויאמר שלחני נא כי זבח משפחה לנו בעיר והוא צוה לי אחי ועתה אם מצאתי חן בעיניך אמלטה נא ואראה את אחי על כן לא בא אל שלחן המלך׃

³⁰Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of a perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mother's nakedness?

³⁰Alors la colère de Saül s'enflamma contre Jonathan, et il lui dit: Fils pervers et rebelle, ne sais je pas que tu as pour ami le fils d'Isaï, à ta honte et à la honte de ta mère?

³⁰ויחר אף שאול ביהונתן ויאמר לו בן נעות המרדות הלוא ידעתי כי בחר אתה לבן ישי לבשתך ולבשת ערות אמך׃

³¹For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

³¹Car aussi longtemps que le fils d'Isaï sera vivant sur la terre, il n'y aura point de sécurité ni pour toi ni pour ta royauté. Et maintenant, envoie-le chercher, et qu'on me l'amène, car il est digne de mort.

³¹כי כל הימים אשר בן ישי חי על האדמה לא תכון אתה ומלכותך ועתה שלח וקח אתו אלי כי בן מות הוא׃

³²And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore should he be put to death? what hath he done?

³²Jonathan répondit à Saül, son père, et lui dit: Pourquoi le ferait-on mourir? Qu'a-t-il fait?

³²ויען יהונתן את שאול אביו ויאמר אליו למה יומת מה עשה׃

³³And Saul cast his spear at him to smite him; whereby Jonathan knew that is was determined of his father to put David to death.

³³Et Saül dirigea sa lance contre lui, pour le frapper. Jonathan comprit que c'était chose résolue chez son père que de faire mourir David.

³³ויטל שאול את החנית עליו להכתו וידע יהונתן כי כלה היא מעם אביו להמית את דוד׃

³⁴So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

³⁴Il se leva de table dans une ardente colère, et ne participa point au repas le second jour de la nouvelle lune; car il était affligé à cause de David, parce que son père l'avait outragé.

³⁴ויקם יהונתן מעם השלחן בחרי אף ולא אכל ביום החדש השני לחם כי נעצב אל דוד כי הכלמו אביו׃

³⁵And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

³⁵Le lendemain matin, Jonathan alla dans les champs au lieu convenu avec David, et il était accompagné d'un petit garçon.

³⁵ויהי בבקר ויצא יהונתן השדה למועד דוד ונער קטן עמו׃

³⁶And he said unto his lad, Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

³⁶Il lui dit: Cours, trouve les flèches que je vais tirer. Le garçon courut, et Jonathan tira une flèche qui le dépassa.

³⁶ויאמר לנערו רץ מצא נא את החצים אשר אנכי מורה הנער רץ והוא ירה החצי להעברו׃

³⁷And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

³⁷Lorsqu'il arriva au lieu où était la flèche que Jonathan avait tirée, Jonathan cria derrière lui: La flèche n'est-elle pas plus loin que toi?

³⁷ויבא הנער עד מקום החצי אשר ירה יהונתן ויקרא יהונתן אחרי הנער ויאמר הלוא החצי ממך והלאה׃

³⁸And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

³⁸Il lui cria encore: Vite, hâte-toi, ne t'arrête pas! Et le garçon de Jonathan ramassa les flèches et revint vers son maître.

³⁸ויקרא יהונתן אחרי הנער מהרה חושה אל תעמד וילקט נער יהונתן את החצי ויבא אל אדניו׃

³⁹But the lad knew not anything: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

³⁹Le garçon ne savait rien; Jonathan et David seuls comprenaient la chose.

³⁹והנער לא ידע מאומה אך יהונתן ודוד ידעו את הדבר׃

⁴⁰And Jonathan gave his weapons unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

⁴⁰Jonathan remit ses armes à son garçon, et lui dit: Va, porte-les à la ville.

⁴⁰ויתן יהונתן את כליו אל הנער אשר לו ויאמר לו לך הביא העיר׃

⁴¹And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of [a place] toward the South, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

⁴¹Après le départ du garçon, David se leva du côté du midi, puis se jeta le visage contre terre et se prosterna trois fois. Les deux amis s'embrassèrent et pleurèrent ensemble, David surtout fondit en larmes.

⁴¹הנער בא ודוד קם מאצל הנגב ויפל לאפיו ארצה וישתחו שלש פעמים וישקו איש את רעהו ויבכו איש את רעהו עד דוד הגדיל׃

⁴²And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of Jehovah, saying, Jehovah shall be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed, for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.

⁴²Et Jonathan dit à David: Va en paix, maintenant que nous avons juré l'un et l'autre, au nom de l'Eternel, en disant: Que l'Eternel soit à jamais entre moi et toi, entre ma postérité et ta postérité! David se leva, et s'en alla, et Jonathan rentra dans la ville.

⁴²ויאמר יהונתן לדוד לך לשלום אשר נשבענו שנינו אנחנו בשם יהוה לאמר יהוה יהיה ביני ובינך ובין זרעי ובין זרעך עד עולם ויקם וילך ויהונתן בא העיר׃
