¹And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and encamped beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines encamped in Aphek.

¹La parole de Samuel s'adressait à tout Israël. Israël sortit à la rencontre des Philistins, pour combattre. Ils campèrent près d'Eben-Ezer, et les Philistins étaient campés à Aphek.

¹ויהי דבר שמואל לכל ישראל ויצא ישראל לקראת פלשתים למלחמה ויחנו על האבן העזר ופלשתים חנו באפק׃

²And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines; and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

²Les Philistins se rangèrent en bataille contre Israël, et le combat s'engagea. Israël fut battu par les Philistins, qui tuèrent sur le champ de bataille environ quatre mille hommes.

²ויערכו פלשתים לקראת ישראל ותטש המלחמה וינגף ישראל לפני פלשתים ויכו במערכה בשדה כארבעת אלפים איש׃

³And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of Jehovah out of Shiloh unto us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies.

³Le peuple rentra au camp, et les anciens d'Israël dirent: Pourquoi l'Eternel nous a-t-il laissé battre aujourd'hui par les Philistins? Allons chercher à Silo l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel; qu'elle vienne au milieu de nous, et qu'elle nous délivre de la main de nos ennemis.

³ויבא העם אל המחנה ויאמרו זקני ישראל למה נגפנו יהוה היום לפני פלשתים נקחה אלינו משלה את ארון ברית יהוה ויבא בקרבנו וישענו מכף איבינו׃

⁴So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of hosts, who sitteth [above] the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

⁴Le peuple envoya à Silo, d'où l'on apporta l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel des armées qui siège entre les chérubins. Les deux fils d'Eli, Hophni et Phinées, étaient là, avec l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu.

⁴וישלח העם שלה וישאו משם את ארון ברית יהוה צבאות ישב הכרבים ושם שני בני עלי עם ארון ברית האלהים חפני ופינחס׃

⁵And when the ark of the covenant of Jehovah came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

⁵Lorsque l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel entra dans le camp, tout Israël poussa de grands cris de joie, et la terre en fut ébranlée.

⁵ויהי כבוא ארון ברית יהוה אל המחנה וירעו כל ישראל תרועה גדולה ותהם הארץ׃

⁶And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of Jehovah was come into the camp.

⁶Le retentissement de ces cris fut entendu des Philistins, et ils dirent: Que signifient ces grands cris qui retentissent dans le camp des Hébreux? Et ils apprirent que l'arche de l'Eternel était arrivée au camp.

⁶וישמעו פלשתים את קול התרועה ויאמרו מה קול התרועה הגדולה הזאת במחנה העברים וידעו כי ארון יהוה בא אל המחנה׃

⁷And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

⁷Les Philistins eurent peur, parce qu'ils crurent que Dieu était venu dans le camp. Malheur à nous! dirent-ils, car il n'en a pas été ainsi jusqu'à présent.

⁷ויראו הפלשתים כי אמרו בא אלהים אל המחנה ויאמרו אוי לנו כי לא היתה כזאת אתמול שלשם׃

⁸Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plagues in the wilderness.

⁸Malheur à nous! Qui nous délivrera de la main de ces dieux puissants? Ce sont ces dieux qui ont frappé les Egyptiens de toutes sortes de plaies dans le désert.

⁸אוי לנו מי יצילנו מיד האלהים האדירים האלה אלה הם האלהים המכים את מצרים בכל מכה במדבר׃

⁹Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

⁹Fortifiez-vous et soyez des hommes, Philistins, de peur que vous ne soyez asservis aux Hébreux comme ils vous ont été asservis; soyez des hommes et combattez!

⁹התחזקו והיו לאנשים פלשתים פן תעבדו לעברים כאשר עבדו לכם והייתם לאנשים ונלחמתם׃

¹⁰And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man to his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

¹⁰Les Philistins livrèrent bataille, et Israël fut battu. Chacun s'enfuit dans sa tente. La défaite fut très grande, et il tomba d'Israël trente mille hommes de pied.

¹⁰וילחמו פלשתים וינגף ישראל וינסו איש לאהליו ותהי המכה גדולה מאד ויפל מישראל שלשים אלף רגלי׃

¹¹And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

¹¹L'arche de Dieu fut prise, et les deux fils d'Eli, Hophni et Phinées, moururent.

¹¹וארון אלהים נלקח ושני בני עלי מתו חפני ופינחס׃

¹²And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

¹²Un homme de Benjamin accourut du champ de bataille et vint à Silo le même jour, les vêtements déchirés et la tête couverte de terre.

¹²וירץ איש בנימן מהמערכה ויבא שלה ביום ההוא ומדיו קרעים ואדמה על ראשו׃

¹³And when he came, lo, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the wayside watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

¹³Lorsqu'il arriva, Eli était dans l'attente, assis sur un siège près du chemin, car son coeur était inquiet pour l'arche de Dieu. A son entrée dans la ville, cet homme donna la nouvelle, et toute la ville poussa des cris.

¹³ויבוא והנה עלי ישב על הכסא יך דרך מצפה כי היה לבו חרד על ארון האלהים והאיש בא להגיד בעיר ותזעק כל העיר׃

¹⁴And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man hasted, and came and told Eli.

¹⁴Eli, entendant ces cris, dit: Que signifie ce tumulte? Et aussitôt l'homme vint apporter la nouvelle à Eli.

¹⁴וישמע עלי את קול הצעקה ויאמר מה קול ההמון הזה והאיש מהר ויבא ויגד לעלי׃

¹⁵Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.

¹⁵Or Eli était âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans, il avait les yeux fixes et ne pouvait plus voir.

¹⁵ועלי בן תשעים ושמנה שנה ועיניו קמה ולא יכול לראות׃

¹⁶And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to-day out of the army. And he said, How went the matter, my son?

¹⁶L'homme dit à Eli: J'arrive du champ de bataille, et c'est du champ de bataille que je me suis enfui aujourd'hui. Eli dit: Que s'est-il passé, mon fils?

¹⁶ויאמר האיש אל עלי אנכי הבא מן המערכה ואני מן המערכה נסתי היום ויאמר מה היה הדבר בני׃

¹⁷And he that brought the tidings answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

¹⁷Celui qui apportait la nouvelle dit en réponse: Israël a fui devant les Philistins, et le peuple a éprouvé une grande défaite; et même tes deux fils, Hophni et Phinées, sont morts, et l'arche de Dieu a été prise.

¹⁷ויען המבשר ויאמר נס ישראל לפני פלשתים וגם מגפה גדולה היתה בעם וגם שני בניך מתו חפני ופינחס וארון האלהים נלקחה׃

¹⁸And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that [Eli] feel from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

¹⁸A peine eut-il fait mention de l'arche de Dieu, qu'Eli tomba de son siège à la renverse, à côté de la porte; il se rompit la nuque et mourut, car c'était un homme vieux et pesant. Il avait été juge en Israël pendant quarante ans.

¹⁸ויהי כהזכירו את ארון האלהים ויפל מעל הכסא אחרנית בעד יד השער ותשבר מפרקתו וימת כי זקן האיש וכבד והוא שפט את ישראל ארבעים שנה׃

¹⁹And his daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and brought forth; for her pains came upon her.

¹⁹Sa belle-fille, femme de Phinées, était enceinte et sur le point d'accoucher. Lorsqu'elle entendit la nouvelle de la prise de l'arche de Dieu, de la mort de son beau-père et de celle de son mari, elle se courba et accoucha, car les douleurs la surprirent.

¹⁹וכלתו אשת פינחס הרה ללת ותשמע את השמעה אל הלקח ארון האלהים ומת חמיה ואישה ותכרע ותלד כי נהפכו עליה צריה׃

²⁰And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast brought forth a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

²⁰Comme elle allait mourir, les femmes qui étaient auprès d'elle lui dirent: Ne crains point, car tu as enfanté un fils! Mais elle ne répondit pas et n'y fit pas attention.

²⁰וכעת מותה ותדברנה הנצבות עליה אל תיראי כי בן ילדת ולא ענתה ולא שתה לבה׃

²¹And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel; because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

²¹Elle appela l'enfant I-Kabod, en disant: La gloire est bannie d'Israël! C'était à cause de la prise de l'arche de Dieu, et à cause de son beau-père et de son mari.

²¹ותקרא לנער אי כבוד לאמר גלה כבוד מישראל אל הלקח ארון האלהים ואל חמיה ואישה׃

²²And she said, The glory is departed from Israel; for the ark of God is taken.

²²Elle dit: La gloire est bannie d'Israël, car l'arche de Dieu est prise!

²²ותאמר גלה כבוד מישראל כי נלקח ארון האלהים׃
