¹And the ark of Jehovah was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

¹L'arche de l'Eternel fut sept mois dans le pays des Philistins.

¹ויהי ארון יהוה בשדה פלשתים שבעה חדשים׃

²And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Jehovah? show us wherewith we shall sent it to its place.

²Et les Philistins appelèrent les prêtres et les devins, et ils dirent: Que ferons-nous de l'arche de l'Eternel? Faites-nous connaître de quelle manière nous devons la renvoyer en son lieu.

²ויקראו פלשתים לכהנים ולקסמים לאמר מה נעשה לארון יהוה הודענו במה נשלחנו למקומו׃

³And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but by all means return him a trespass-offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

³Ils répondirent: Si vous renvoyez l'arche du Dieu d'Israël, ne la renvoyez point à vide, mais faites à Dieu un sacrifice de culpabilité; alors vous guérirez, et vous saurez pourquoi sa main ne s'est pas retirée de dessus vous.

³ויאמרו אם משלחים את ארון אלהי ישראל אל תשלחו אתו ריקם כי השב תשיבו לו אשם אז תרפאו ונודע לכם למה לא תסור ידו מכם׃

⁴Then said they, What shall be the trespass-offering which we shall return to him? And they said, Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, [according to] the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

⁴Les Philistins dirent: Quelle offrande lui ferons-nous? Ils répondirent: Cinq tumeurs d'or et cinq souris d'or, d'après le nombre des princes des Philistins, car une même plaie a été sur vous tous et sur vos princes.

⁴ויאמרו מה האשם אשר נשיב לו ויאמרו מספר סרני פלשתים חמשה עפלי זהב וחמשה עכברי זהב כי מגפה אחת לכלם ולסרניכם׃

⁵Wherefore ye shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

⁵Faites des figures de vos tumeurs et des figures de vos souris qui ravagent le pays, et donnez gloire au Dieu d'Israël: peut-être cessera-t-il d'appesantir sa main sur vous, sur vos dieux, et sur votre pays.

⁵ועשיתם צלמי עפליכם וצלמי עכבריכם המשחיתם את הארץ ונתתם לאלהי ישראל כבוד אולי יקל את ידו מעליכם ומעל אלהיכם ומעל ארצכם׃

⁶Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

⁶Pourquoi endurciriez-vous votre coeur, comme les Egyptiens et Pharaon ont endurci leur coeur? N'exerça-t-il pas ses châtiments sur eux, et ne laissèrent-ils pas alors partir les enfants d'Israël?

⁶ולמה תכבדו את לבבכם כאשר כבדו מצרים ופרעה את לבם הלוא כאשר התעלל בהם וישלחום וילכו׃

⁷Now therefore take and prepare you a new cart, and two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke; and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them;

⁷Maintenant, faites un char tout neuf, et prenez deux vaches qui allaitent et qui n'aient point porté le joug; attelez les vaches au char, et ramenez à la maison leurs petits qui sont derrière elles.

⁷ועתה קחו ועשו עגלה חדשה אחת ושתי פרות עלות אשר לא עלה עליהם על ואסרתם את הפרות בעגלה והשיבתם בניהם מאחריהם הביתה׃

⁸and take the ark of Jehovah, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass-offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

⁸Vous prendrez l'arche de l'Eternel, et vous la mettrez sur le char; vous placerez à côté d'elle, dans un coffre, les objets d'or que vous donnez à l'Eternel en offrande pour le péché; puis vous la renverrez, et elle partira.

⁸ולקחתם את ארון יהוה ונתתם אתו אל העגלה ואת כלי הזהב אשר השבתם לו אשם תשימו בארגז מצדו ושלחתם אתו והלך׃

⁹And see; if it goeth up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

⁹Suivez-la du regard: si elle monte par le chemin de sa frontière vers Beth-Schémesch, c'est l'Eternel qui nous a fait ce grand mal; sinon, nous saurons que ce n'est pas sa main qui nous a frappés, mais que cela nous est arrivé par hasard.

⁹וראיתם אם דרך גבולו יעלה בית שמש הוא עשה לנו את הרעה הגדולה הזאת ואם לא וידענו כי לא ידו נגעה בנו מקרה הוא היה לנו׃

¹⁰And the men did so, and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home;

¹⁰Ces gens firent ainsi. Ils prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient et les attelèrent au char, et ils enfermèrent les petits dans la maison.

¹⁰ויעשו האנשים כן ויקחו שתי פרות עלות ויאסרום בעגלה ואת בניהם כלו בבית׃

¹¹and they put the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors.

¹¹Ils mirent sur le char l'arche de l'Eternel, et le coffre avec les souris d'or et les figures de leurs tumeurs.

¹¹וישמו את ארון יהוה אל העגלה ואת הארגז ואת עכברי הזהב ואת צלמי טחריהם׃

¹²And the kine took the straight way by the way to Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.

¹²Les vaches prirent directement le chemin de Beth-Schémesch; elles suivirent toujours la même route en mugissant, et elles ne se détournèrent, ni à droite ni à gauche. Les princes des Philistins allèrent derrière elles jusqu'à la frontière de Beth-Schémesch.

¹²וישרנה הפרות בדרך על דרך בית שמש במסלה אחת הלכו הלך וגעו ולא סרו ימין ושמאול וסרני פלשתים הלכים אחריהם עד גבול בית שמש׃

¹³And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

¹³Les habitants de Beth-Schémesch moissonnaient les blés dans la vallée; ils levèrent les yeux, aperçurent l'arche, et se réjouirent en la voyant.

¹³ובית שמש קצרים קציר חטים בעמק וישאו את עיניהם ויראו את הארון וישמחו לראות׃

¹⁴And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered up the kine for a burnt-offering unto Jehovah.

¹⁴Le char arriva dans le champ de Josué de Beth-Schémesch, et s'y arrêta. Il y avait là une grande pierre. On fendit le bois du char, et l'on offrit les vaches en holocauste à l'Eternel.

¹⁴והעגלה באה אל שדה יהושע בית השמשי ותעמד שם ושם אבן גדולה ויבקעו את עצי העגלה ואת הפרות העלו עלה ליהוה׃

¹⁵And the Levites took down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto Jehovah.

¹⁵Les Lévites descendirent l'arche de l'Eternel, et le coffre qui était à côté d'elle et qui contenait les objets d'or; et ils posèrent le tout sur la grande pierre. Les gens de Beth-Schémesch offrirent en ce jour des holocaustes et des sacrifices à l'Eternel.

¹⁵והלוים הורידו את ארון יהוה ואת הארגז אשר אתו אשר בו כלי זהב וישמו אל האבן הגדולה ואנשי בית שמש העלו עלות ויזבחו זבחים ביום ההוא ליהוה׃

¹⁶And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

¹⁶Les cinq princes des Philistins, après avoir vu cela, retournèrent à Ekron le même jour.

¹⁶וחמשה סרני פלשתים ראו וישבו עקרון ביום ההוא׃

¹⁷And these are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass-offering unto Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

¹⁷Voici les tumeurs d'or que les Philistins donnèrent à l'Eternel en offrande pour le péché: une pour Asdod, une pour Gaza, une pour Askalon, une pour Gath, une pour Ekron.

¹⁷ואלה טחרי הזהב אשר השיבו פלשתים אשם ליהוה לאשדוד אחד לעזה אחד לאשקלון אחד לגת אחד לעקרון אחד׃

¹⁸and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even unto the great stone, whereon they set down the ark of Jehovah, [which stone remaineth] unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite.

¹⁸Il y avait aussi des souris d'or selon le nombre de toutes les villes des Philistins, appartenant aux cinq chefs, tant des villes fortifiées que des villages sans murailles. C'est ce qu'atteste la grande pierre sur laquelle on déposa l'arche de l'Eternel, et qui est encore aujourd'hui dans le champ de Josué de Beth-Schémesch.

¹⁸ועכברי הזהב מספר כל ערי פלשתים לחמשת הסרנים מעיר מבצר ועד כפר הפרזי ועד אבל הגדולה אשר הניחו עליה את ארון יהוה עד היום הזה בשדה יהושע בית השמשי׃

¹⁹And he smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Jehovah, he smote of the people seventy men, [and] fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because Jehovah had smitten the people with a great slaughter.

¹⁹L'Eternel frappa les gens de Beth-Schémesch, lorsqu'ils regardèrent l'arche de l'Eternel; il frappa cinquante mille soixante-dix hommes parmi le peuple. Et le peuple fut dans la désolation, parce que l'Eternel l'avait frappé d'une grande plaie.

¹⁹ויך באנשי בית שמש כי ראו בארון יהוה ויך בעם שבעים איש חמשים אלף איש ויתאבלו העם כי הכה יהוה בעם מכה גדולה׃

²⁰And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

²⁰Les gens de Beth-Schémesch dirent: Qui peut subsister en présence de l'Eternel, de ce Dieu saint? Et vers qui l'arche doit-elle monter, en s'éloignant de nous?

²⁰ויאמרו אנשי בית שמש מי יוכל לעמד לפני יהוה האלהים הקדוש הזה ואל מי יעלה מעלינו׃

²¹And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought back the ark of Jehovah; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

²¹Ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Kirjath-Jearim, pour leur dire: Les Philistins ont ramené l'arche de l'Eternel; descendez, et faites-la monter vers vous.

²¹וישלחו מלאכים אל יושבי קרית יערים לאמר השבו פלשתים את ארון יהוה רדו העלו אתו אליכם׃
