1And the men of Kiriath-jearim came, and fetched up the ark of Jehovah, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of Jehovah.
1Les gens de Kirjath-Jearim vinrent, et firent monter l'arche de l'Eternel; ils la conduisirent dans la maison d'Abinadab, sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Eléazar pour garder l'arche de l'Eternel.
1ויבאו אנשי קרית יערים ויעלו את ארון יהוה ויבאו אתו אל בית אבינדב בגבעה ואת אלעזר בנו קדשו לשמר את ארון יהוה׃
2And it came to pass, from the day that the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after Jehovah.
2Il s'était passé bien du temps depuis le jour où l'arche avait été déposée à Kirjath-Jearim. Vingt années s'étaient écoulées. Alors toute la maison d'Israël poussa des gémissements vers l'Eternel.
2ויהי מיום שבת הארון בקרית יערים וירבו הימים ויהיו עשרים שנה וינהו כל בית ישראל אחרי יהוה׃
3And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto Jehovah with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts unto Jehovah, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
3Samuel dit à toute la maison d'Israël: Si c'est de tout votre coeur que vous revenez à l'Eternel, ôtez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, dirigez votre coeur vers l'Eternel, et servez-le lui seul; et il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins.
3ויאמר שמואל אל כל בית ישראל לאמר אם בכל לבבכם אתם שבים אל יהוה הסירו את אלהי הנכר מתוככם והעשתרות והכינו לבבכם אל יהוה ועבדהו לבדו ויצל אתכם מיד פלשתים׃
4Then the children of Israel did put away the Baalim and the Ashtaroth, and served Jehovah only.
4Et les enfants d'Israël ôtèrent du milieu d'eux les Baals et les Astartés, et ils servirent l'Eternel seul.
4ויסירו בני ישראל את הבעלים ואת העשתרת ויעבדו את יהוה לבדו׃
5And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you unto Jehovah.
5Samuel dit: Assemblez tout Israël à Mitspa, et je prierai l'Eternel pour vous.
5ויאמר שמואל קבצו את כל ישראל המצפתה ואתפלל בעדכם אל יהוה׃
6And they gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Jehovah, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against Jehovah. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.
6Et ils s'assemblèrent à Mitspa. Ils puisèrent de l'eau et la répandirent devant l'Eternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, en disant: Nous avons péché contre l'Eternel! Samuel jugea les enfants d'Israël à Mitspa.
6ויקבצו המצפתה וישאבו מים וישפכו לפני יהוה ויצומו ביום ההוא ויאמרו שם חטאנו ליהוה וישפט שמואל את בני ישראל במצפה׃
7And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
7Les Philistins apprirent que les enfants d'Israël s'étaient assemblés à Mitspa, et les princes des Philistins montèrent contre Israël. A cette nouvelle, les enfants d'Israël eurent peur des Philistins,
7וישמעו פלשתים כי התקבצו בני ישראל המצפתה ויעלו סרני פלשתים אל ישראל וישמעו בני ישראל ויראו מפני פלשתים׃
8And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto Jehovah our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
8et ils dirent à Samuel: Ne cesse point de crier pour nous à l'Eternel, notre Dieu, afin qu'il nous sauve de la main des Philistins.
8ויאמרו בני ישראל אל שמואל אל תחרש ממנו מזעק אל יהוה אלהינו וישענו מיד פלשתים׃
9And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt-offering unto Jehovah: and Samuel cried unto Jehovah for Israel; and Jehovah answered him.
9Samuel prit un agneau de lait, et l'offrit tout entier en holocauste à l'Eternel. Il cria à l'Eternel pour Israël, et l'Eternel l'exauça.
9ויקח שמואל טלה חלב אחד ויעלה עולה כליל ליהוה ויזעק שמואל אל יהוה בעד ישראל ויענהו יהוה׃
10And as Samuel was offering up the burnt-offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but Jehovah thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten down before Israel.
10Pendant que Samuel offrait l'holocauste, les Philistins s'approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. L'Eternel fit retentir en ce jour son tonnerre sur les Philistins, et les mit en déroute. Ils furent battus devant Israël.
10ויהי שמואל מעלה העולה ופלשתים נגשו למלחמה בישראל וירעם יהוה בקול גדול ביום ההוא על פלשתים ויהמם וינגפו לפני ישראל׃
11And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.
11Les hommes d'Israël sortirent de Mitspa, poursuivirent les Philistins, et les battirent jusqu'au-dessous de Beth-Car.
11ויצאו אנשי ישראל מן המצפה וירדפו את פלשתים ויכום עד מתחת לבית כר׃
12Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath Jehovah helped us.
12Samuel prit une pierre, qu'il plaça entre Mitspa et Schen, et il l'appela du nom d'Eben-Ezer, en disant: Jusqu'ici l'Eternel nous a secourus.
12ויקח שמואל אבן אחת וישם בין המצפה ובין השן ויקרא את שמה אבן העזר ויאמר עד הנה עזרנו יהוה׃
13So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the border of Israel: and the hand of Jehovah was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
13Ainsi les Philistins furent humiliés, et ils ne vinrent plus sur le territoire d'Israël. La main de l'Eternel fut contre les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel.
13ויכנעו הפלשתים ולא יספו עוד לבוא בגבול ישראל ותהי יד יהוה בפלשתים כל ימי שמואל׃
14And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the border thereof did Israel deliver out of the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
14Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises sur Israël retournèrent à Israël, depuis Ekron jusqu'à Gath, avec leur territoire; Israël les arracha de la main des Philistins. Et il y eut paix entre Israël et les Amoréens.
14ותשבנה הערים אשר לקחו פלשתים מאת ישראל לישראל מעקרון ועד גת ואת גבולן הציל ישראל מיד פלשתים ויהי שלום בין ישראל ובין האמרי׃
15And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
15Samuel fut juge en Israël pendant toute sa vie.
15וישפט שמואל את ישראל כל ימי חייו׃
16And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth-el and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places.
16Il allait chaque année faire le tour de Béthel, de Guilgal et de Mitspa, et il jugeait Israël dans tous ces lieux.
16והלך מדי שנה בשנה וסבב בית אל והגלגל והמצפה ושפט את ישראל את כל המקומות האלה׃
17And his return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Israel: and he built there an altar unto Jehovah.
17Puis il revenait à Rama, où était sa maison; et là il jugeait Israël, et il y bâtit un autel à l'Eternel.
17ותשבתו הרמתה כי שם ביתו ושם שפט את ישראל ויבן שם מזבח ליהוה׃
