¹And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

¹Lorsque Samuel devint vieux, il établit ses fils juges sur Israël.

¹ויהי כאשר זקן שמואל וישם את בניו שפטים לישראל׃

²Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beer-sheba.

²Son fils premier-né se nommait Joël, et le second Abija; ils étaient juges à Beer-Schéba.

²ויהי שם בנו הבכור יואל ושם משנהו אביה שפטים בבאר שבע׃

³And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

³Les fils de Samuel ne marchèrent point sur ses traces; ils se livraient à la cupidité, recevaient des présents, et violaient la justice.

³ולא הלכו בניו בדרכו ויטו אחרי הבצע ויקחו שחד ויטו משפט׃

⁴Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah;

⁴Tous les anciens d'Israël s'assemblèrent, et vinrent auprès de Samuel à Rama.

⁴ויתקבצו כל זקני ישראל ויבאו אל שמואל הרמתה׃

⁵and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

⁵Ils lui dirent: Voici, tu es vieux, et tes fils ne marchent point sur tes traces; maintenant, établis sur nous un roi pour nous juger, comme il y en a chez toutes les nations.

⁵ויאמרו אליו הנה אתה זקנת ובניך לא הלכו בדרכיך עתה שימה לנו מלך לשפטנו ככל הגוים׃

⁶But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah.

⁶Samuel vit avec déplaisir qu'ils disaient: Donne-nous un roi pour nous juger. Et Samuel pria l'Eternel.

⁶וירע הדבר בעיני שמואל כאשר אמרו תנה לנו מלך לשפטנו ויתפלל שמואל אל יהוה׃

⁷And Jehovah said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.

⁷L'Eternel dit à Samuel: Ecoute la voix du peuple dans tout ce qu'il te dira; car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils rejettent, c'est moi qu'ils rejettent, afin que je ne règne plus sur eux.

⁷ויאמר יהוה אל שמואל שמע בקול העם לכל אשר יאמרו אליך כי לא אתך מאסו כי אתי מאסו ממלך עליהם׃

⁸According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

⁸Ils agissent à ton égard comme ils ont toujours agi depuis que je les ai fait monter d'Egypte jusqu'à ce jour; ils m'ont abandonné, pour servir d'autres dieux.

⁸ככל המעשים אשר עשו מיום העלתי אתם ממצרים ועד היום הזה ויעזבני ויעבדו אלהים אחרים כן המה עשים גם לך׃

⁹Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit thou shalt protest solemnly unto them, and shalt show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

⁹Ecoute donc leur voix; mais donne-leur des avertissements, et fais-leur connaître le droit du roi qui régnera sur eux.

⁹ועתה שמע בקולם אך כי העד תעיד בהם והגדת להם משפט המלך אשר ימלך עליהם׃

¹⁰And Samuel told all the words of Jehovah unto the people that asked of him a king.

¹⁰Samuel rapporta toutes les paroles de l'Eternel au peuple qui lui demandait un roi.

¹⁰ויאמר שמואל את כל דברי יהוה אל העם השאלים מאתו מלך׃

¹¹And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots;

¹¹Il dit: Voici quel sera le droit du roi qui régnera sur vous. Il prendra vos fils, et il les mettra sur ses chars et parmi ses cavaliers, afin qu'ils courent devant son char;

¹¹ויאמר זה יהיה משפט המלך אשר ימלך עליכם את בניכם יקח ושם לו במרכבתו ובפרשיו ורצו לפני מרכבתו׃

¹²and he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and [he will set some] to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.

¹²il s'en fera des chefs de mille et des chefs de cinquante, et il les emploiera à labourer ses terres, à récolter ses moissons, à fabriquer ses armes de guerre et l'attirail de ses chars.

¹²ולשום לו שרי אלפים ושרי חמשים ולחרש חרישו ולקצר קצירו ולעשות כלי מלחמתו וכלי רכבו׃

¹³And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

¹³Il prendra vos filles, pour en faire des parfumeuses, des cuisinières et des boulangères.

¹³ואת בנותיכם יקח לרקחות ולטבחות ולאפות׃

¹⁴And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

¹⁴Il prendra la meilleure partie de vos champs, de vos vignes et de vos oliviers, et la donnera à ses serviteurs.

¹⁴ואת שדותיכם ואת כרמיכם וזיתיכם הטובים יקח ונתן לעבדיו׃

¹⁵And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

¹⁵Il prendra la dîme du produit de vos semences et de vos vignes, et la donnera à ses serviteurs.

¹⁵וזרעיכם וכרמיכם יעשר ונתן לסריסיו ולעבדיו׃

¹⁶And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

¹⁶Il prendra vos serviteurs et vos servantes, vos meilleurs boeufs et vos ânes, et s'en servira pour ses travaux.

¹⁶ואת עבדיכם ואת שפחותיכם ואת בחוריכם הטובים ואת חמוריכם יקח ועשה למלאכתו׃

¹⁷He will take the tenth of your flocks: and ye shall be his servants.

¹⁷Il prendra la dîme de vos troupeaux, et vous-mêmes serez ses esclaves.

¹⁷צאנכם יעשר ואתם תהיו לו לעבדים׃

¹⁸And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and Jehovah will not answer you in that day.

¹⁸Et alors vous crierez contre votre roi que vous vous serez choisi, mais l'Eternel ne vous exaucera point.

¹⁸וזעקתם ביום ההוא מלפני מלככם אשר בחרתם לכם ולא יענה יהוה אתכם ביום ההוא׃

¹⁹But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay: but we will have a king over us,

¹⁹Le peuple refusa d'écouter la voix de Samuel. Non! dirent-ils, mais il y aura un roi sur nous,

¹⁹וימאנו העם לשמע בקול שמואל ויאמרו לא כי אם מלך יהיה עלינו׃

²⁰that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

²⁰et nous aussi nous serons comme toutes les nations; notre roi nous jugera il marchera à notre tête et conduira nos guerres.

²⁰והיינו גם אנחנו ככל הגוים ושפטנו מלכנו ויצא לפנינו ונלחם את מלחמתנו׃

²¹And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Jehovah.

²¹Samuel, après avoir entendu toutes les paroles du peuple, les redit aux oreilles de l'Eternel.

²¹וישמע שמואל את כל דברי העם וידברם באזני יהוה׃

²²And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

²²Et l'Eternel dit à Samuel: Ecoute leur voix, et établis un roi sur eux. Et Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël: Allez-vous-en chacun dans sa ville.

²²ויאמר יהוה אל שמואל שמע בקולם והמלכת להם מלך ויאמר שמואל אל אנשי ישראל לכו איש לעירו׃
