¹Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left behind at Athens alone;

¹C'est pourquoi, impatients que nous étions, et nous décidant à rester seuls à Athènes,

¹ועל כן לא יכלנו עוד להתאפק ונועץ להותר לבדנו באתינס׃

²and sent Timothy, our brother and God's minister in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort [you] concerning your faith;

²nous envoyâmes Timothée, notre frère, ministre de Dieu dans l'Evangile de Christ, pour vous affermir et vous exhorter au sujet de votre foi,

²ונשלח את טימותיוס אחינו ומשרת האלהים ועזרנו בבשורת המשיח לחזק ולהזהיר אתכם על דבר אמונתכם׃

³that no man be moved by these afflictions; for yourselves know that hereunto we are appointed.

³afin que personne ne fût ébranlé au milieu des tribulations présentes; car vous savez vous-mêmes que nous sommes destinés à cela.

³שלא ימוט איש במצוקות האלה כי ידעתם אף אתם כי לזאת יעדנו׃

⁴For verily, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

⁴Et lorsque nous étions auprès de vous, nous vous annoncions d'avance que nous serions exposés à des tribulations, comme cela est arrivé, et comme vous le savez.

⁴הלא כבד אמרנו אליכם בהיותנו אצלכם כי עתידים אנחנו להלחץ כאשר גם היה ואתם ידעתם׃

⁵For this cause I also, when I could no longer forbear, sent that I might know your faith, lest by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor should be in vain.

⁵Ainsi, dans mon impatience, j'envoyai m'informer de votre foi, dans la crainte que le tentateur ne vous eût tentés, et que nous n'eussions travaillé en vain.

⁵ובעבור כן לא יכלתי עוד להתאפק ואשלח לדעת אמונתכם כי אמרתי פן נסה אתכם המנסה והיתה לריק יגיעתנו׃

⁶But when Timothy came even now unto us from you, and brought us glad tidings of your faith and love, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, longing to see us, even as we also [to see] you;

⁶Mais Timothée, récemment arrivé ici de chez vous, nous a donné de bonnes nouvelles de votre foi et de votre charité, et nous a dit que vous avez toujours de nous un bon souvenir, désirant nous voir comme nous désirons aussi vous voir.

⁶ועתה כשוב אלינו טימותיוס מאתכם ויבשר אתנו את בשורת אמונתכם ואהבתכם ואת אשר אתם זכרים אתנו לטובה בכל עת ונכספים לראות אתנו כאשר גם אנחנו נכספים לכם׃

⁷for this cause, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith:

⁷En conséquence, frères, au milieu de toutes nos calamités et de nos tribulations, nous avons été consolés à votre sujet, à cause de votre foi.

⁷אז נחמנו עליכם אחי בכל צרתנו ולחצנו על ידי אמונתכם׃

⁸for now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

⁸Car maintenant nous vivons, puisque vous demeurez fermes dans le Seigneur.

⁸כי עתה נחיה אם תעמדו אתם באדנינו׃

⁹For what thanksgiving can we render again unto God for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;

⁹Quelles actions de grâces, en effet, nous pouvons rendre à Dieu à votre sujet, pour toute la joie que nous éprouvons à cause de vous, devant notre Dieu!

⁹כי מה נשיב לאלהים להודות לו בעבורכם על כל השמחה אשר שמחנו עליכם לפני אלהינו׃

¹⁰night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face, and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

¹⁰Nuit et jour, nous le prions avec une extrême ardeur de nous permettre de vous voir, et de compléter ce qui manque à votre foi.

¹⁰לילה ויומם מפילים אנחנו תחנתנו לראות את פניכם ולהשלים את מחסרי אמונתכם׃

¹¹Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way unto you:

¹¹Que Dieu lui-même, notre Père, et notre Seigneur Jésus, aplanissent notre route pour que nous allions à vous!

¹¹והוא האלהים אבינו ואדנינו ישוע המשיח יישר את דרכנו אליכם׃

¹²and the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we also [do] toward you;

¹²Que le Seigneur augmente de plus en plus parmi vous, et à l'égard de tous, cette charité que nous avons nous-mêmes pour vous,

¹²ואתכם ירבה ויותיר האדון לאהבה איש את רעהו ולאהבה כל אדם כאשר גם אנחנו אהבים אתכם׃

¹³to the end he may establish your hearts unblameable in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

¹³afin d'affermir vos coeurs pour qu'ils soient irréprochables dans la sainteté devant Dieu notre Père, lors de l'avènement de notre Seigneur Jésus avec tous ses saints!

¹³ויכונן את לבבכם להיות תמים בקדשה לפני אלהינו אבינו בבוא ישוע המשיח אדנינו עם כל קדשיו׃
