¹Finally then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as ye received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, even as ye do walk, --that ye abound more and more.

¹Au reste, frères, puisque vous avez appris de nous comment vous devez vous conduire et plaire à Dieu, et que c'est là ce que vous faites, nous vous prions et nous vous conjurons au nom du Seigneur Jésus de marcher à cet égard de progrès en progrès.

¹ועוד נבקשה מכם אחי ונזהיר אתכם באדנינו ישוע כי כאשר קבלתם מאתנו איך לכם להתהלך ולמצא חן בעיני האלהים כן תוסיפו וכן תרבו עוד׃

²For ye know what charge we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

²Vous savez, en effet, quels préceptes nous vous avons donnés de la part du Seigneur Jésus.

²כי ידעתם את המצות אשר נתנו לכם בשם האדון ישוע׃

³For this is the will of God, [even] your sanctification, that ye abstain from fornication;

³Ce que Dieu veut, c'est votre sanctification; c'est que vous vous absteniez de l'impudicité;

³כי רצון האלהים היא קדשתכם אשר תתרחקו מן הזנות׃

⁴that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor,

⁴c'est que chacun de vous sache posséder son corps dans la sainteté et l'honnêteté,

⁴וידע כל איש מכם לשמר את כליו בקדשה ויקר׃

⁵not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God;

⁵sans vous livrer à une convoitise passionnée, comme font les païens qui ne connaissent pas Dieu;

⁵ולא בתאות זמה כדרך הגוים אשר אינם ידעים האלהים׃

⁶that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in the matter: because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.

⁶c'est que personne n'use envers son frère de fraude et de cupidité dans les affaires, parce que le Seigneur tire vengeance de toutes ces choses, comme nous vous l'avons déjà dit et attesté.

⁶ולא יפרץ איש ויונה את אחיו בעשק כי נוקם יהוה על כל זאת כאשר כבר אמרנו והעידנו לכם׃

⁷For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification.

⁷Car Dieu ne nous a pas appelés à l'impureté, mais à la sanctification.

⁷כי לא קרא אותנו האלהים לטמאה כי אם לקדשה׃

⁸Therefore he that rejecteth, rejecteth not man, but God, who giveth his Holy Spirit unto you.

⁸Celui donc qui rejette ces préceptes ne rejette pas un homme, mais Dieu, qui vous a aussi donné son Saint-Esprit.

⁸על כן הבוזה זאת לא אנשים הוא בוזה כי אם את האלהים אשר גם שם בקרבנו את רוח קדשו׃

⁹But concerning love of the brethren ye have no need that one write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another;

⁹Pour ce qui est de l'amour fraternel, vous n'avez pas besoin qu'on vous en écrive; car vous avez vous-mêmes appris de Dieu à vous aimer les uns les autres,

⁹ועל אהבת האחים אין צרך לכתב אליכם הלא אף אתם למודי יהוה לאהבה איש את רעהו׃

¹⁰for indeed ye do it toward all the brethren that are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, that ye abound more and more;

¹⁰et c'est aussi ce que vous faites envers tous les frères dans la Macédoine entière. Mais nous vous exhortons, frères, à abonder toujours plus dans cet amour,

¹⁰וגם עשים אתם כן לכל אחיכם אשר בכל מקדוניא אך נבקשה מכם אחי אשר תוסיפו ותרבו עוד׃

¹¹and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you;

¹¹et à mettre votre honneur à vivre tranquilles, à vous occuper de vos propres affaires, et à travailler de vos mains, comme nous vous l'avons recommandé,

¹¹ותשתדלו לשבת בנחת ותעשו איש מלאכתו בעמל ידיכם כאשר צוינו אתכם׃

¹²that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing.

¹²en sorte que vous vous conduisiez honnêtement envers ceux du dehors, et que vous n'ayez besoin de personne.

¹²למען תתנהגו כהגן עם אשר בחוץ ולא תצטרכו לאדם׃

¹³But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope.

¹³Nous ne voulons pas, frères, que vous soyez dans l'ignorance au sujet de ceux qui dorment, afin que vous ne vous affligiez pas comme les autres qui n'ont point d'espérance.

¹³ועל דבר הישנים אחי לא נכחד מכם דבר למען לא תעצבו כאחרים אשר אין להם תקוה׃

¹⁴For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

¹⁴Car, si nous croyons que Jésus est mort et qu'il est ressuscité, croyons aussi que Dieu ramènera par Jésus et avec lui ceux qui sont morts.

¹⁴כי אם נאמין אשר מת ישוע ויחי כן יביא האלהים על ידי ישוע גם את הישנים אתו׃

¹⁵For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we that are alive, that are left unto the coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep.

¹⁵Voici, en effet, ce que nous vous déclarons d'après la parole du Seigneur: nous les vivants, restés pour l'avènement du Seigneur, nous ne devancerons pas ceux qui sont morts.

¹⁵כי את זאת נאמר לכם בדבר יהוה כי אנחנו החיים הנותרים עד בא האדון לא נקדם את הישנים׃

¹⁶For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first;

¹⁶Car le Seigneur lui-même, à un signal donné, à la voix d'un archange, et au son de la trompette de Dieu, descendra du ciel, et les morts en Christ ressusciteront premièrement.

¹⁶כי הוא האדון ירד מן השמים בתרועה בקול שר המלאכים ובשופר אלהים ואז יקומו ראשונה המתים במשיח׃

¹⁷then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

¹⁷Ensuite, nous les vivants, qui serons restés, nous serons tous ensemble enlevés avec eux sur des nuées, à la rencontre du Seigneur dans les airs, et ainsi nous serons toujours avec le Seigneur.

¹⁷אחרי כן אנחנו החיים הנשארים נלקח אתם יחדו בעננים לקראת האדון לרקיע ובכן נהיה תמיד עם האדון׃

¹⁸Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

¹⁸Consolez-vous donc les uns les autres par ces paroles.

¹⁸לכן נחמו זה את זה בדברים האלה׃
