¹Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Zibiah, of Beer-sheba.

¹Joas avait sept ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna quarante ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Tsibja, de Beer-Schéba.

¹בן שבע שנים יאש במלכו וארבעים שנה מלך בירושלם ושם אמו צביה מבאר שבע׃

²And Joash did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

²Joas fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel pendant toute la vie du sacrificateur Jehojada.

²ויעש יואש הישר בעיני יהוה כל ימי יהוידע הכהן׃

³And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.

³Jehojada prit pour Joas deux femmes, et Joas engendra des fils et des filles.

³וישא לו יהוידע נשים שתים ויולד בנים ובנות׃

⁴And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to restore the house of Jehovah.

⁴Après cela, Joas eut la pensée de réparer la maison de l'Eternel.

⁴ויהי אחריכן היה עם לב יואש לחדש את בית יהוה׃

⁵And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year; and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.

⁵Il assembla les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et leur dit: Allez par les villes de Juda, et vous recueillerez dans tout Israël de l'argent, chaque année, pour réparer la maison de votre Dieu; et mettez à cette affaire de l'empressement. Mais les Lévites ne se hâtèrent point.

⁵ויקבץ את הכהנים והלוים ויאמר להם צאו לערי יהודה וקבצו מכל ישראל כסף לחזק את בית אלהיכם מדי שנה בשנה ואתם תמהרו לדבר ולא מהרו הלוים׃

⁶And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tax of Moses the servant of Jehovah, and of the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?

⁶Le roi appela Jehojada, le souverain sacrificateur, et lui dit: Pourquoi n'as-tu pas veillé à ce que les Lévites apportassent de Juda et de Jérusalem l'impôt ordonné par Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel, et mis sur l'assemblée d'Israël pour la tente du témoignage?

⁶ויקרא המלך ליהוידע הראש ויאמר לו מדוע לא דרשת על הלוים להביא מיהודה ומירושלם את משאת משה עבד יהוה והקהל לישראל לאהל העדות׃

⁷For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of Jehovah did they bestow upon the Baalim.

⁷Car l'impie Athalie et ses fils ont ravagé la maison de Dieu et fait servir pour les Baals toutes les choses consacrées à la maison de l'Eternel.

⁷כי עתליהו המרשעת בניה פרצו את בית האלהים וגם כל קדשי בית יהוה עשו לבעלים׃

⁸So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of Jehovah.

⁸Alors le roi ordonna qu'on fît un coffre, et qu'on le plaçât à la porte de la maison de l'Eternel, en dehors.

⁸ויאמר המלך ויעשו ארון אחד ויתנהו בשער בית יהוה חוצה׃

⁹And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Jehovah the tax that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.

⁹Et l'on publia dans Juda et dans Jérusalem qu'on apportât à l'Eternel l'impôt mis par Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel, sur Israël dans le désert.

⁹ויתנו קול ביהודה ובירושלם להביא ליהוה משאת משה עבד האלהים על ישראל במדבר׃

¹⁰And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

¹⁰Tous les chefs et tout le peuple s'en réjouirent, et l'on apporta et jeta dans le coffre tout ce qu'on avait à payer.

¹⁰וישמחו כל השרים וכל העם ויביאו וישליכו לארון עד לכלה׃

¹¹And it was so, that, at what time the chest was brought unto the king's officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king's scribe and the chief priest's officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

¹¹Quand c'était le moment où les Lévites, voyant qu'il y avait beaucoup d'argent dans le coffre, devaient le livrer aux inspecteurs royaux, le secrétaire du roi et le commissaire du souverain sacrificateur venaient vider le coffre; ils le prenaient et le remettaient à sa place; ils faisaient ainsi journellement, et ils recueillirent de l'argent en abondance.

¹¹ויהי בעת יביא את הארון אל פקדת המלך ביד הלוים וכראותם כי רב הכסף ובא סופר המלך ופקיד כהן הראש ויערו את הארון וישאהו וישיבהו אל מקמו כה עשו ליום ביום ויאספו כסף לרב׃

¹²And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of Jehovah; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of Jehovah, and also such as wrought iron and brass to repair the house of Jehovah.

¹²Le roi et Jehojada le donnaient à ceux qui étaient chargés de faire exécuter l'ouvrage dans la maison de l'Eternel, et qui prenaient à gage des tailleurs de pierres et des charpentiers pour réparer la maison de l'Eternel, et aussi des ouvriers en fer ou en airain pour réparer la maison de l'Eternel.

¹²ויתנהו המלך ויהוידע אל עושה מלאכת עבודת בית יהוה ויהיו שכרים חצבים וחרשים לחדש בית יהוה וגם לחרשי ברזל ונחשת לחזק את בית יהוה׃

¹³So the workmen wrought, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands, and they set up the house of God in its state, and strengthened it.

¹³Ceux qui étaient chargés de l'ouvrage travaillèrent, et les réparations s'exécutèrent par leurs soins; ils remirent en état la maison de Dieu et la consolidèrent.

¹³ויעשו עשי המלאכה ותעל ארוכה למלאכה בידם ויעמידו את בית האלהים על מתכנתו ויאמצהו׃

¹⁴And when they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of Jehovah, even vessels wherewith to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt-offerings in the house of Jehovah continually all the days of Jehoiada.

¹⁴Lorsqu'ils eurent achevé, ils apportèrent devant le roi et devant Jehojada le reste de l'argent; et l'on en fit des ustensiles pour la maison de l'Eternel, des ustensiles pour le service et pour les holocaustes, des coupes, et d'autres ustensiles d'or et d'argent. Et, pendant toute la vie de Jehojada, on offrit continuellement des holocaustes dans la maison de l'Eternel.

¹⁴וככלותם הביאו לפני המלך ויהוידע את שאר הכסף ויעשהו כלים לבית יהוה כלי שרת והעלות וכפות וכלי זהב וכסף ויהיו מעלים עלות בבית יהוה תמיד כל ימי יהוידע׃

¹⁵But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days, and he died; a hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.

¹⁵Jehojada mourut, âgé et rassasié de jours; il avait à sa mort cent trente ans.

¹⁵ויזקן יהוידע וישבע ימים וימת בן מאה ושלשים שנה במותו׃

¹⁶And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.

¹⁶On l'enterra dans la ville de David avec les rois, parce qu'il avait fait du bien en Israël, et à l'égard de Dieu et à l'égard de sa maison.

¹⁶ויקברהו בעיר דויד עם המלכים כי עשה טובה בישראל ועם האלהים וביתו׃

¹⁷Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

¹⁷Après la mort de Jehojada, les chefs de Juda vinrent se prosterner devant le roi. Alors le roi les écouta.

¹⁷ואחרי מות יהוידע באו שרי יהודה וישתחוו למלך אז שמע המלך אליהם׃

¹⁸And they forsook the house of Jehovah, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.

¹⁸Et ils abandonnèrent la maison de l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, et ils servirent les Astartés et les idoles. La colère de l'Eternel fut sur Juda et sur Jérusalem, parce qu'ils s'étaient ainsi rendus coupables.

¹⁸ויעזבו את בית יהוה אלהי אבותיהם ויעבדו את האשרים ואת העצבים ויהי קצף על יהודה וירושלם באשמתם זאת׃

¹⁹Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto Jehovah; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

¹⁹L'Eternel envoya parmi eux des prophètes pour les ramener à lui, mais ils n'écoutèrent point les avertissements qu'ils en reçurent.

¹⁹וישלח בהם נבאים להשיבם אל יהוה ויעידו בם ולא האזינו׃

²⁰And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of Jehovah, so that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken Jehovah, he hath also forsaken you.

²⁰Zacharie, fils du sacrificateur Jehojada, fut revêtu de l'esprit de Dieu; il se présenta devant le peuple et lui dit: Ainsi parle Dieu: Pourquoi transgressez-vous les commandements de l'Eternel? Vous ne prospérerez point; car vous avez abandonné l'Eternel, et il vous abandonnera.

²⁰ורוח אלהים לבשה את זכריה בן יהוידע הכהן ויעמד מעל לעם ויאמר להם כה אמר האלהים למה אתם עברים את מצות יהוה ולא תצליחו כי עזבתם את יהוה ויעזב אתכם׃

²¹And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of Jehovah.

²¹Et ils conspirèrent contre lui, et le lapidèrent par ordre du roi, dans le parvis de la maison de l'Eternel.

²¹ויקשרו עליו וירגמהו אבן במצות המלך בחצר בית יהוה׃

²²Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, Jehovah look upon it, and require it.

²²Le roi Joas ne se souvint pas de la bienveillance qu'avait eue pour lui Jehojada, père de Zacharie, et il fit périr son fils. Zacharie dit en mourant: Que l'Eternel voie, et qu'il fasse justice!

²²ולא זכר יואש המלך החסד אשר עשה יהוידע אביו עמו ויהרג את בנו וכמותו אמר ירא יהוה וידרש׃

²³And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.

²³Quand l'année fut révolue, l'armée des Syriens monta contre Joas, et vint en Juda et à Jérusalem. Ils tuèrent parmi le peuple tous les chefs du peuple, et ils envoyèrent au roi de Damas tout leur butin.

²³ויהי לתקופת השנה עלה עליו חיל ארם ויבאו אל יהודה וירושלם וישחיתו את כל שרי העם מעם וכל שללם שלחו למלך דרמשק׃

²⁴For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Jehovah delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken Jehovah, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment upon Joash.

²⁴L'armée des Syriens arriva avec un petit nombre d'hommes; et cependant l'Eternel livra entre leurs mains une armée très considérable, parce qu'ils avaient abandonné l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères. Et les Syriens firent justice de Joas.

²⁴כי במצער אנשים באו חיל ארם ויהוה נתן בידם חיל לרב מאד כי עזבו את יהוה אלהי אבותיהם ואת יואש עשו שפטים׃

²⁵And when they were departed for him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.

²⁵Lorsqu'ils se furent éloignés de lui, après l'avoir laissé dans de grandes souffrances, ses serviteurs conspirèrent contre lui à cause du sang des fils du sacrificateur Jehojada; ils le tuèrent sur son lit, et il mourut. On l'enterra dans la ville de David, mais on ne l'enterra pas dans les sépulcres des rois.

²⁵ובלכתם ממנו כי עזבו אתו במחליים רבים התקשרו עליו עבדיו בדמי בני יהוידע הכהן ויהרגהו על מטתו וימת ויקברהו בעיר דויד ולא קברהו בקברות המלכים׃

²⁶And these are they that conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.

²⁶Voici ceux qui conspirèrent contre lui: Zabad, fils de Schimeath, femme Ammonite, et Jozabad, fils de Schimrith, femme Moabite.

²⁶ואלה המתקשרים עליו זבד בן שמעת העמונית ויהוזבד בן שמרית המואבית׃

²⁷Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens [laid] upon him, and the rebuilding of the house of God, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

²⁷Pour ce qui concerne ses fils, le grand nombre de prophéties dont il fut l'objet, et les réparations faites à la maison de Dieu, cela est écrit dans les mémoires sur le livre des rois. Amatsia, son fils, régna à sa place.

²⁷ובניו ורב המשא עליו ויסוד בית האלהים הנם כתובים על מדרש ספר המלכים וימלך אמציהו בנו תחתיו׃
