¹And it came to pass, when Jehovah would take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.

¹Lorsque l'Eternel fit monter Elie au ciel dans un tourbillon, Elie partait de Guilgal avec Elisée.

¹ויהי בהעלות יהוה את אליהו בסערה השמים וילך אליהו ואלישע מן הגלגל׃

²And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me as far as Beth-el. And Elisha said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth-el.

²Elie dit à Elisée: Reste ici, je te prie, car l'Eternel m'envoie jusqu'à Béthel. Elisée répondit: L'Eternel est vivant et ton âme est vivante! je ne te quitterai point. Et ils descendirent à Béthel.

²ויאמר אליהו אל אלישע שב נא פה כי יהוה שלחני עד בית אל ויאמר אלישע חי יהוה וחי נפשך אם אעזבך וירדו בית אל׃

³And the sons of the prophets that were at Beth-el came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that Jehovah will take away thy master from thy head to-day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.

³Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Béthel sortirent vers Elisée, et lui dirent: Sais-tu que l'Eternel enlève aujourd'hui ton maître au-dessus de ta tête? Et il répondit: Je le sais aussi; taisez-vous.

³ויצאו בני הנביאים אשר בית אל אל אלישע ויאמרו אליו הידעת כי היום יהוה לקח את אדניך מעל ראשך ויאמר גם אני ידעתי החשו׃

⁴And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.

⁴Elie lui dit: Elisée, reste ici, je te prie, car l'Eternel m'envoie à Jéricho. Il répondit: L'Eternel est vivant et ton âme est vivante! je ne te quitterai point. Et ils arrivèrent à Jéricho.

⁴ויאמר לו אליהו אלישע שב נא פה כי יהוה שלחני יריחו ויאמר חי יהוה וחי נפשך אם אעזבך ויבאו יריחו׃

⁵And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came near to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that Jehovah will take away thy master from thy head to-day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace.

⁵Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho s'approchèrent d'Elisée, et lui dirent: Sais-tu que l'Eternel enlève aujourd'hui ton maître au-dessus de ta tête? Et il répondit: Je le sais aussi; taisez-vous.

⁵ויגשו בני הנביאים אשר ביריחו אל אלישע ויאמרו אליו הידעת כי היום יהוה לקח את אדניך מעל ראשך ויאמר גם אני ידעתי החשו׃

⁶And Elijah said unto him, Tarry here, I pray thee; for Jehovah hath sent me to the Jordan. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.

⁶Elie lui dit: Reste ici, je te prie, car l'Eternel m'envoie au Jourdain. Il répondit: L'Eternel est vivant et ton âme est vivante! je ne te quitterai point. Et ils poursuivirent tous deux leur chemin.

⁶ויאמר לו אליהו שב נא פה כי יהוה שלחני הירדנה ויאמר חי יהוה וחי נפשך אם אעזבך וילכו שניהם׃

⁷And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood over against them afar off: and they two stood by the Jordan.

⁷Cinquante hommes d'entre les fils des prophètes arrivèrent et s'arrêtèrent à distance vis-à-vis, et eux deux s'arrêtèrent au bord du Jourdain.

⁷וחמשים איש מבני הנביאים הלכו ויעמדו מנגד מרחוק ושניהם עמדו על הירדן׃

⁸And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.

⁸Alors Elie prit son manteau, le roula, et en frappa les eaux, qui se partagèrent çà et là, et ils passèrent tous deux à sec.

⁸ויקח אליהו את אדרתו ויגלם ויכה את המים ויחצו הנה והנה ויעברו שניהם בחרבה׃

⁹And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I am taken from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

⁹Lorsqu'ils eurent passé, Elie dit à Elisée: Demande ce que tu veux que je fasse pour toi, avant que je sois enlevé d'avec toi. Elisée répondit: Qu'il y ait sur moi, je te prie, une double portion de ton esprit!

⁹ויהי כעברם ואליהו אמר אל אלישע שאל מה אעשה לך בטרם אלקח מעמך ויאמר אלישע ויהי נא פי שנים ברוחך אלי׃

¹⁰And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: [nevertheless], if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

¹⁰Elie dit: Tu demandes une chose difficile. Mais si tu me vois pendant que je serai enlevé d'avec toi, cela t'arrivera ainsi; sinon, cela n'arrivera pas.

¹⁰ויאמר הקשית לשאול אם תראה אתי לקח מאתך יהי לך כן ואם אין לא יהיה׃

¹¹And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, [there appeared] a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, which parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

¹¹Comme ils continuaient à marcher en parlant, voici, un char de feu et des chevaux de feu les séparèrent l'un de l'autre, et Elie monta au ciel dans un tourbillon.

¹¹ויהי המה הלכים הלוך ודבר והנה רכב אש וסוסי אש ויפרדו בין שניהם ויעל אליהו בסערה השמים׃

¹²And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen thereof! And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

¹²Elisée regardait et criait: Mon père! mon père! Char d'Israël et sa cavalerie! Et il ne le vit plus. Saisissant alors ses vêtements, il les déchira en deux morceaux,

¹²ואלישע ראה והוא מצעק אבי אבי רכב ישראל ופרשיו ולא ראהו עוד ויחזק בבגדיו ויקרעם לשנים קרעים׃

¹³He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan.

¹³et il releva le manteau qu'Elie avait laissé tomber. Puis il retourna, et s'arrêta au bord du Jourdain;

¹³וירם את אדרת אליהו אשר נפלה מעליו וישב ויעמד על שפת הירדן׃

¹⁴And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is Jehovah, the God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they were divided hither and thither; and Elisha went over.

¹⁴il prit le manteau qu'Elie avait laissé tomber, et il en frappa les eaux, et dit: Où est l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Elie? Lui aussi, il frappa les eaux, qui se partagèrent çà et là, et Elisée passa.

¹⁴ויקח את אדרת אליהו אשר נפלה מעליו ויכה את המים ויאמר איה יהוה אלהי אליהו אף הוא ויכה את המים ויחצו הנה והנה ויעבר אלישע׃

¹⁵And when the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho over against him saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

¹⁵Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho, vis-à-vis, l'ayant vu, dirent: L'esprit d'Elie repose sur Elisée! Et ils allèrent à sa rencontre, et se prosternèrent contre terre devant lui.

¹⁵ויראהו בני הנביאים אשר ביריחו מנגד ויאמרו נחה רוח אליהו על אלישע ויבאו לקראתו וישתחוו לו ארצה׃

¹⁶And they said unto him, Behold now, there are with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master, lest the Spirit of Jehovah hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.

¹⁶Ils lui dirent: Voici, il y a parmi tes serviteurs cinquante hommes vaillants; veux-tu qu'ils aillent chercher ton maître? Peut-être que l'esprit de l'Eternel l'a emporté et l'a jeté sur quelque montagne ou dans quelque vallée. Il répondit: Ne les envoyez pas.

¹⁶ויאמרו אליו הנה נא יש את עבדיך חמשים אנשים בני חיל ילכו נא ויבקשו את אדניך פן נשאו רוח יהוה וישלכהו באחד ההרים או באחת הגיאות ויאמר לא תשלחו׃

¹⁷And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not.

¹⁷Mais ils le pressèrent longtemps; et il dit: Envoyez-les. Ils envoyèrent les cinquante hommes, qui cherchèrent Elie pendant trois jours et ne le trouvèrent point.

¹⁷ויפצרו בו עד בש ויאמר שלחו וישלחו חמשים איש ויבקשו שלשה ימים ולא מצאהו׃

¹⁸And they came back to him, while he tarried at Jericho; and he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?

¹⁸Lorsqu'ils furent de retour auprès d'Elisée, qui était à Jéricho, il leur dit: Ne vous avais-je pas dit: N'allez pas?

¹⁸וישבו אליו והוא ישב ביריחו ויאמר אלהם הלוא אמרתי אליכם אל תלכו׃

¹⁹And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, we pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is bad, and the land miscarrieth.

¹⁹Les gens de la ville dirent à Elisée: Voici, le séjour de la ville est bon, comme le voit mon seigneur; mais les eaux sont mauvaises, et le pays est stérile.

¹⁹ויאמרו אנשי העיר אל אלישע הנה נא מושב העיר טוב כאשר אדני ראה והמים רעים והארץ משכלת׃

²⁰And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him.

²⁰Il dit: Apportez-moi un plat neuf, et mettez-y du sel. Et ils le lui apportèrent.

²⁰ויאמר קחו לי צלחית חדשה ושימו שם מלח ויקחו אליו׃

²¹And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast salt therein, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or miscarrying.

²¹Il alla vers la source des eaux, et il y jeta du sel, et dit: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: J'assainis ces eaux; il n'en proviendra plus ni mort, ni stérilité.

²¹ויצא אל מוצא המים וישלך שם מלח ויאמר כה אמר יהוה רפאתי למים האלה לא יהיה משם עוד מות ומשכלת׃

²²So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spake.

²²Et les eaux furent assainies, jusqu'à ce jour, selon la parole qu'Elisée avait prononcée.

²²וירפו המים עד היום הזה כדבר אלישע אשר דבר׃

²³And he went up from thence unto Beth-el; and as he was going up by the way, there came forth young lads out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou baldhead; go up, thou baldhead.

²³Il monta de là à Béthel; et comme il cheminait à la montée, des petits garçons sortirent de la ville, et se moquèrent de lui. Ils lui disaient: Monte, chauve! monte, chauve!

²³ויעל משם בית אל והוא עלה בדרך ונערים קטנים יצאו מן העיר ויתקלסו בו ויאמרו לו עלה קרח עלה קרח׃

²⁴And he looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of Jehovah. And there came forth two she-bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two lads of them.

²⁴Il se retourna pour les regarder, et il les maudit au nom de l'Eternel. Alors deux ours sortirent de la forêt, et déchirèrent quarante-deux de ces enfants.

²⁴ויפן אחריו ויראם ויקללם בשם יהוה ותצאנה שתים דבים מן היער ותבקענה מהם ארבעים ושני ילדים׃

²⁵And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.

²⁵De là il alla sur la montagne du Carmel, d'où il retourna à Samarie.

²⁵וילך משם אל הר הכרמל ומשם שב שמרון׃
