¹Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

¹Joram, fils d'Achab, régna sur Israël à Samarie, la dix-huitième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda. Il régna douze ans.

¹ויהורם בן אחאב מלך על ישראל בשמרון בשנת שמנה עשרה ליהושפט מלך יהודה וימלך שתים עשרה שנה׃

²And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.

²Il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Eternel, non pas toutefois comme son père et sa mère. Il renversa les statues de Baal que son père avait faites;

²ויעשה הרע בעיני יהוה רק לא כאביו וכאמו ויסר את מצבת הבעל אשר עשה אביו׃

³Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

³mais il se livra aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, qui avait fait pécher Israël, et il ne s'en détourna point.

³רק בחטאות ירבעם בן נבט אשר החטיא את ישראל דבק לא סר ממנה׃

⁴Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams.

⁴Méscha, roi de Moab, possédait des troupeaux, et il payait au roi d'Israël un tribut de cent mille agneaux et de cent mille béliers avec leur laine.

⁴ומישע מלך מואב היה נקד והשיב למלך ישראל מאה אלף כרים ומאה אלף אילים צמר׃

⁵But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

⁵A la mort d'Achab, le roi de Moab se révolta contre le roi d'Israël.

⁵ויהי כמות אחאב ויפשע מלך מואב במלך ישראל׃

⁶And king Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.

⁶Le roi Joram sortit alors de Samarie, et passa en revue tout Israël.

⁶ויצא המלך יהורם ביום ההוא משמרון ויפקד את כל ישראל׃

⁷And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.

⁷Il se mit en marche, et il fit dire à Josaphat, roi de Juda: Le roi de Moab s'est révolté contre moi; veux-tu venir avec moi attaquer Moab? Josaphat répondit: J'irai, moi comme toi, mon peuple comme ton peuple, mes chevaux comme tes chevaux.

⁷וילך וישלח אל יהושפט מלך יהודה לאמר מלך מואב פשע בי התלך אתי אל מואב למלחמה ויאמר אעלה כמוני כמוך כעמי כעמך כסוסי כסוסיך׃

⁸And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way of the wilderness of Edom.

⁸Et il dit: Par quel chemin monterons-nous? Joram dit: Par le chemin du désert d'Edom.

⁸ויאמר אי זה הדרך נעלה ויאמר דרך מדבר אדום׃

⁹So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them.

⁹Le roi d'Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d'Edom, partirent; et après une marche de sept jours, ils manquèrent d'eau pour l'armée et pour les bêtes qui la suivaient.

⁹וילך מלך ישראל ומלך יהודה ומלך אדום ויסבו דרך שבעת ימים ולא היה מים למחנה ולבהמה אשר ברגליהם׃

¹⁰And the king of Israel said, Alas! for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

¹⁰Alors le roi d'Israël dit: Hélas! l'Eternel a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab.

¹⁰ויאמר מלך ישראל אהה כי קרא יהוה לשלשת המלכים האלה לתת אותם ביד מואב׃

¹¹But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, that we may inquire of Jehovah by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.

¹¹Mais Josaphat dit: N'y a-t-il ici aucun prophète de l'Eternel, par qui nous puissions consulter l'Eternel? L'un des serviteurs du roi d'Israël répondit: Il y a ici Elisée, fils de Schaphath, qui versait l'eau sur les mains d'Elie.

¹¹ויאמר יהושפט האין פה נביא ליהוה ונדרשה את יהוה מאותו ויען אחד מעבדי מלך ישראל ויאמר פה אלישע בן שפט אשר יצק מים על ידי אליהו׃

¹²And Jehoshaphat said, The word of Jehovah is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

¹²Et Josaphat dit: La parole de l'Eternel est avec lui. Le roi d'Israël, Josaphat et le roi d'Edom, descendirent auprès de lui.

¹²ויאמר יהושפט יש אותו דבר יהוה וירדו אליו מלך ישראל ויהושפט ומלך אדום׃

¹³And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay; for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.

¹³Elisée dit au roi d'Israël: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi? Va vers les prophètes de ton père et vers les prophètes de ta mère. Et le roi d'Israël lui dit: Non! car l'Eternel a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab.

¹³ויאמר אלישע אל מלך ישראל מה לי ולך לך אל נביאי אביך ואל נביאי אמך ויאמר לו מלך ישראל אל כי קרא יהוה לשלשת המלכים האלה לתת אותם ביד מואב׃

¹⁴And Elisha said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.

¹⁴Elisée dit: L'Eternel des armées, dont je suis le serviteur, est vivant! si je n'avais égard à Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne ferais aucune attention à toi et je ne te regarderais pas.

¹⁴ויאמר אלישע חי יהוה צבאות אשר עמדתי לפניו כי לולי פני יהושפט מלך יהודה אני נשא אם אביט אליך ואם אראך׃

¹⁵But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Jehovah came upon him.

¹⁵Maintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe. Et comme le joueur de harpe jouait, la main de l'Eternel fut sur Elisée.

¹⁵ועתה קחו לי מנגן והיה כנגן המנגן ותהי עליו יד יהוה׃

¹⁶And he said, Thus saith Jehovah, Make this valley full of trenches.

¹⁶Et il dit: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Faites dans cette vallée des fosses, des fosses!

¹⁶ויאמר כה אמר יהוה עשה הנחל הזה גבים גבים׃

¹⁷For thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts.

¹⁷Car ainsi parle l'Eternel: Vous n'apercevrez point de vent et vous ne verrez point de pluie, et cette vallée se remplira d'eau, et vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et votre bétail.

¹⁷כי כה אמר יהוה לא תראו רוח ולא תראו גשם והנחל ההוא ימלא מים ושתיתם אתם ומקניכם ובהמתכם׃

¹⁸And this is but a light thing in the sight of Jehovah: he will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.

¹⁸Mais cela est peu de chose aux yeux de l'Eternel. Il livrera Moab entre vos mains;

¹⁸ונקל זאת בעיני יהוה ונתן את מואב בידכם׃

¹⁹And ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.

¹⁹vous frapperez toutes les villes fortes et toutes les villes d'élite, vous abattrez tous les bons arbres, vous boucherez toutes les sources d'eau, et vous ruinerez avec des pierres tous les meilleurs champs.

¹⁹והכיתם כל עיר מבצר וכל עיר מבחור וכל עץ טוב תפילו וכל מעיני מים תסתמו וכל החלקה הטובה תכאבו באבנים׃

²⁰And it came to pass in the morning, about the time of offering the oblation, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

²⁰Or le matin, au moment de la présentation de l'offrande, voici, l'eau arriva du chemin d'Edom, et le pays fut rempli d'eau.

²⁰ויהי בבקר כעלות המנחה והנה מים באים מדרך אדום ותמלא הארץ את המים׃

²¹Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border.

²¹Cependant, tous les Moabites ayant appris que les rois montaient pour les attaquer, on convoqua tous ceux en âge de porter les armes et même au-dessus, et ils se tinrent sur la frontière.

²¹וכל מואב שמעו כי עלו המלכים להלחם בם ויצעקו מכל חגר חגרה ומעלה ויעמדו על הגבול׃

²²And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood:

²²Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et quand le soleil brilla sur les eaux, les Moabites virent en face d'eux les eaux rouges comme du sang.

²²וישכימו בבקר והשמש זרחה על המים ויראו מואב מנגד את המים אדמים כדם׃

²³and they said, This is blood; the kings are surely destroyed, and they have smitten each man his fellow: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.

²³Ils dirent: C'est du sang! les rois ont tiré l'épée entre eux, ils se sont frappés les uns les autres; maintenant, Moabites, au pillage!

²³ויאמרו דם זה החרב נחרבו המלכים ויכו איש את רעהו ועתה לשלל מואב׃

²⁴And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites.

²⁴Et ils marchèrent contre le camp d'Israël. Mais Israël se leva, et frappa Moab, qui prit la fuite devant eux. Ils pénétrèrent dans le pays, et frappèrent Moab.

²⁴ויבאו אל מחנה ישראל ויקמו ישראל ויכו את מואב וינסו מפניהם ויבו בה והכות את מואב׃

²⁵And they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir-hareseth [only] they left the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.

²⁵Ils renversèrent les villes, ils jetèrent chacun des pierres dans tous les meilleurs champs et les en remplirent, ils bouchèrent toutes les sources d'eau, et ils abattirent tous les bons arbres; et les frondeurs enveloppèrent et battirent Kir-Haréseth, dont on ne laissa que les pierres.

²⁵והערים יהרסו וכל חלקה טובה ישליכו איש אבנו ומלאוה וכל מעין מים יסתמו וכל עץ טוב יפילו עד השאיר אבניה בקיר חרשת ויסבו הקלעים ויכוה׃

²⁶And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not.

²⁶Le roi de Moab, voyant qu'il avait le dessous dans le combat, prit avec lui sept cents hommes tirant l'épée pour se frayer un passage jusqu'au roi d'Edom; mais ils ne purent pas.

²⁶וירא מלך מואב כי חזק ממנו המלחמה ויקח אותו שבע מאות איש שלף חרב להבקיע אל מלך אדום ולא יכלו׃

²⁷Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

²⁷Il prit alors son fils premier-né, qui devait régner à sa place, et il l'offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. Et une grande indignation s'empara d'Israël, qui s'éloigna du roi de Moab et retourna dans son pays.

²⁷ויקח את בנו הבכור אשר ימלך תחתיו ויעלהו עלה על החמה ויהי קצף גדול על ישראל ויסעו מעליו וישבו לארץ׃
