¹This is now, beloved, the second epistle that I write unto you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by putting you in remembrance;

¹Voici déjà, bien-aimés, la seconde lettre que je vous écris. Dans l'une et dans l'autre je cherche à éveiller par des avertissements votre saine intelligence,

¹זאת היא האגרת השנית אשר אני כתב אליכם אהובים ובשתיהן אעיר בדרך הזכרה את תמת לבבכם׃

²that ye should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles:

²afin que vous vous souveniez des choses annoncées d'avance par les saints prophètes, et du commandement du Seigneur et Sauveur, enseigné par vos apôtres,

²לזכר את הדברים הנאמרים מקדם בידי הנביאים הקדשים ואת מצות אדנינו ומושיענו אשר נתנה בידנו השליחים׃

³knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come with mockery, walking after their own lusts,

³sachant avant tout que, dans les derniers jours, il viendra des moqueurs avec leurs railleries, marchant selon leurs propres convoitises,

³ודעו זאת לכם ראשנה כי באחרית הימים יבאו לצים ההלכים אחרי תאות נפשם ויתלוצצו לאמר׃

⁴and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

⁴et disant: Où est la promesse de son avènement? Car, depuis que les pères sont morts, tout demeure comme dès le commencement de la création.

⁴איה הבטחת באו כי מאז שכבו האבות הכל עמד כמו מראשית הבריאה׃

⁵For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst water, by the word of God;

⁵Ils veulent ignorer, en effet, que des cieux existèrent autrefois par la parole de Dieu, de même qu'une terre tirée de l'eau et formée au moyen de l'eau,

⁵ונסתר מהם באשר לא יאבו לדעת כי מקדם קמו השמים והארץ בדבר אלהים מן המים ועל ידי המים׃

⁶by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

⁶et que par ces choses le monde d'alors périt, submergé par l'eau,

⁶ובמים אבדה תבל מאז כי נשטפה במי המבול׃

⁷but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

⁷tandis que, par la même parole, les cieux et la terre d'à présent sont gardés et réservés pour le feu, pour le jour du jugement et de la ruine des hommes impies.

⁷גם השמים והארץ אשר לפנינו נצפנו בדברו והם שמורים לאש ליום הדין ואבד אנשי הרשע׃

⁸But forget not this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

⁸Mais il est une chose, bien-aimés, que vous ne devez pas ignorer, c'est que, devant le Seigneur, un jour est comme mille ans, et mille ans sont comme un jour.

⁸וזאת האחת אל תעלם מכם אהובים כי יום אחד כאלף שנים בעיני יהוה ואלף שנים כיום אחד׃

⁹The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

⁹Le Seigneur ne tarde pas dans l'accomplissement de la promesse, comme quelques-uns le croient; mais il use de patience envers vous, ne voulant pas qu'aucun périsse, mais voulant que tous arrivent à la repentance.

⁹ולא יאחר יהוה את אשר הבטיח כאשר יש חשבים אתה לאחור כי אך האריך אפו בעבורנו ולא יחפץ באבד איש כי אם בפנות כלם לתשובה׃

¹⁰But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

¹⁰Le jour du Seigneur viendra comme un voleur; en ce jour, les cieux passeront avec fracas, les éléments embrasés se dissoudront, et la terre avec les oeuvres qu'elle renferme sera consumée.

¹⁰בא יבא יום יהוה כגנב בלילה אז השמים בשאון יחלפו והיסדות יבערו והתמגגו והארץ והמעשים אשר עליה ישרפו׃

¹¹Seeing that these things are thus all to be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in [all] holy living and godliness,

¹¹Puisque donc toutes ces choses doivent se dissoudre, quelles ne doivent pas être la sainteté de votre conduite et votre piété,

¹¹ועתה אם כל אלה ימוגו מה מאד חיבים אתם להתהלך בקדשה ובחסידות׃

¹²looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

¹²tandis que vous attendez et hâtez l'avènement du jour de Dieu, à cause duquel les cieux enflammés se dissoudront et les éléments embrasés se fondront!

¹²ולחכות לבא יום יהוה ולהחיש אתו אשר בגללו השמים ימוגו באש והיסדות יבערו ונמסו׃

¹³But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

¹³Mais nous attendons, selon sa promesse, de nouveaux cieux et une nouvelle terre, où la justice habitera.

¹³ואנחנו כפי הבטחתו מחכים לשמים חדשים ולארץ חדשה אשר צדק ילין בם׃

¹⁴Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for these things, give diligence that ye may be found in peace, without spot and blameless in his sight.

¹⁴C'est pourquoi, bien-aimés, en attendant ces choses, appliquez-vous à être trouvés par lui sans tache et irrépréhensibles dans la paix.

¹⁴על כן אהובים אשר לאלה חכיתם שקדו להמצא לפניו בשלום נקים וזכים מפשע׃

¹⁵And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote unto you;

¹⁵Croyez que la patience de notre Seigneur est votre salut, comme notre bien-aimé frère Paul vous l'a aussi écrit, selon la sagesse qui lui a été donnée.

¹⁵ואת ארך רוח אדנינו תחשבו לתשועה כאשר גם אחינו האהוב פולוס כתב אליכם כפי החכמה הנתונה לו׃

¹⁶as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

¹⁶C'est ce qu'il fait dans toutes les lettres, où il parle de ces choses, dans lesquelles il y a des points difficiles à comprendre, dont les personnes ignorantes et mal affermies tordent le sens, comme celui des autres Ecritures, pour leur propre ruine.

¹⁶וכן בכל אגרותיו בדברו שם על אלה ובהם יש דברים קשי ההבנה והבערים והפתאים יהפכו אתם כאשר גם יעשו לכתבים האחרים לאבדן נפשם׃

¹⁷Ye therefore, beloved, knowing [these things] beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own stedfastness.

¹⁷Vous donc, bien-aimés, qui êtes avertis, mettez-vous sur vos gardes, de peur qu'entraînés par l'égarement des impies, vous ne veniez à déchoir de votre fermeté.

¹⁷ואתם אהובים אשר ידעתם זאת השמרו לנפשתיכם פן תמשכו אחרי טעות אנשי בליעל ונפלתם ממעזכם׃

¹⁸But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] the glory both now and for ever. Amen.

¹⁸Mais croissez dans la grâce et dans la connaissance de notre Seigneur et Sauveur Jésus-Christ. A lui soit la gloire, maintenant et pour l'éternité! Amen!

¹⁸ורבו בחסד ובדעת אדנינו ומושיענו ישוע המשיח אשר לו הכבוד גם היום וגם ליום העולם אמן׃
