1And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
1Après cela, voici ce qui arriva. Absalom, fils de David, avait une soeur qui était belle et qui s'appelait Tamar; et Amnon, fils de David, l'aima.
1ויהי אחרי כן ולאבשלום בן דוד אחות יפה ושמה תמר ויאהבה אמנון בן דוד׃
2And Amnon was so vexed that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything unto her.
2Amnon était tourmenté jusqu'à se rendre malade à cause de Tamar, sa soeur; car elle était vierge, et il paraissait difficile à Amnon de faire sur elle la moindre tentative.
2ויצר לאמנון להתחלות בעבור תמר אחתו כי בתולה היא ויפלא בעיני אמנון לעשות לה מאומה׃
3But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man.
3Amnon avait un ami, nommé Jonadab, fils de Schimea, frère de David, et Jonadab était un homme très habile.
3ולאמנון רע ושמו יונדב בן שמעה אחי דוד ויונדב איש חכם מאד׃
4And he said unto him, Why, O son of the king, art thou thus lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.
4Il lui dit: Pourquoi deviens-tu, ainsi chaque matin plus maigre, toi, fils de roi? Ne veux-tu pas me le dire? Amnon lui répondit: J'aime Tamar, soeur d'Absalom, mon frère.
4ויאמר לו מדוע אתה ככה דל בן המלך בבקר בבקר הלוא תגיד לי ויאמר לו אמנון את תמר אחות אבשלם אחי אני אהב׃
5And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and feign thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, Let my sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and give me bread to eat, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.
5Jonadab lui dit: Mets-toi au lit, et fais le malade. Quand ton père viendra te voir, tu lui diras: Permets à Tamar, ma soeur, de venir pour me donner à manger; qu'elle prépare un mets sous mes yeux, afin que je le voie et que je le prenne de sa main.
5ויאמר לו יהונדב שכב על משכבך והתחל ובא אביך לראותך ואמרת אליו תבא נא תמר אחותי ותברני לחם ועשתה לעיני את הבריה למען אשר אראה ואכלתי מידה׃
6So Amnon lay down, and feigned himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, Let her sister Tamar come, I pray thee, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.
6Amnon se coucha, et fit le malade. Le roi vint le voir, et Amnon dit au roi: Je te prie, que Tamar, ma soeur, vienne faire deux gâteaux sous mes yeux, et que je les mange de sa main.
6וישכב אמנון ויתחל ויבא המלך לראתו ויאמר אמנון אל המלך תבוא נא תמר אחתי ותלבב לעיני שתי לבבות ואברה מידה׃
7Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house, and dress him food.
7David envoya dire à Tamar dans l'intérieur des appartements: Va dans la maison d'Amnon, ton frère, et prépare-lui un mets.
7וישלח דוד אל תמר הביתה לאמר לכי נא בית אמנון אחיך ועשי לו הבריה׃
8So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and he was laid down. And she took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.
8Tamar alla dans la maison d'Amnon, son frère, qui était couché. Elle prit de la pâte, la pétrit, prépara devant lui des gâteaux, et les fit cuire;
8ותלך תמר בית אמנון אחיה והוא שכב ותקח את הבצק ותלוש ותלבב לעיניו ותבשל את הלבבות׃
9And she took the pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.
9prenant ensuite la poêle, elle les versa devant lui. Mais Amnon refusa de manger. Il dit: Faites sortir tout le monde. Et tout le monde sortit de chez lui.
9ותקח את המשרת ותצק לפניו וימאן לאכול ויאמר אמנון הוציאו כל איש מעלי ויצאו כל איש מעליו׃
10And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from thy hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.
10Alors Amnon dit à Tamar: Apporte le mets dans la chambre, et que je le mange de ta main. Tamar prit les gâteaux qu'elle avait faits, et les porta à Amnon, son frère, dans la chambre.
10ויאמר אמנון אל תמר הביאי הבריה החדר ואברה מידך ותקח תמר את הלבבות אשר עשתה ותבא לאמנון אחיה החדרה׃
11And when she had brought them near unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come, lie with me, my sister.
11Comme elle les lui présentait à manger, il la saisit et lui dit: Viens, couche avec moi, ma soeur.
11ותגש אליו לאכל ויחזק בה ויאמר לה בואי שכבי עמי אחותי׃
12And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.
12Elle lui répondit: Non, mon frère, ne me déshonore pas, car on n'agit point ainsi en Israël; ne commets pas cette infamie.
12ותאמר לו אל אחי אל תענני כי לא יעשה כן בישראל אל תעשה את הנבלה הזאת׃
13And I, whither shall I carry my shame? and as for thee, thou wilt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.
13Où irais-je, moi, avec ma honte? Et toi, tu serais comme l'un des infâmes en Israël. Maintenant, je te prie, parle au roi, et il ne s'opposera pas à ce que je sois à toi.
13ואני אנה אוליך את חרפתי ואתה תהיה כאחד הנבלים בישראל ועתה דבר נא אל המלך כי לא ימנעני ממך׃
14Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.
14Mais il ne voulut pas l'écouter; il lui fit violence, la déshonora et coucha avec elle.
14ולא אבה לשמע בקולה ויחזק ממנה ויענה וישכב אתה׃
15Then Amnon hated her with exceeding great hatred; for the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.
15Puis Amnon eut pour elle une forte aversion, plus forte que n'avait été son amour. Et il lui dit: Lève-toi, va-t'en!
15וישנאה אמנון שנאה גדולה מאד כי גדולה השנאה אשר שנאה מאהבה אשר אהבה ויאמר לה אמנון קומי לכי׃
16And she said unto him, Not so, because this great wrong in putting me forth is [worse] than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.
16Elle lui répondit: N'augmente pas, en me chassant, le mal que tu m'as déjà fait. Il ne voulut pas l'écouter,
16ותאמר לו אל אודת הרעה הגדולה הזאת מאחרת אשר עשית עמי לשלחני ולא אבה לשמע לה׃
17Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her.
17et appelant le garçon qui le servait, il dit: Qu'on éloigne de moi cette femme et qu'on la mette dehors. Et ferme la porte après elle!
17ויקרא את נערו משרתו ויאמר שלחו נא את זאת מעלי החוצה ונעל הדלת אחריה׃
18And she had a garment of divers colors upon her; for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.
18Elle avait une tunique de plusieurs couleurs; car c'était le vêtement que portaient les filles du roi, aussi longtemps qu'elles étaient vierges. Le serviteur d'Amnon la mit dehors, et ferma la porte après elle.
18ועליה כתנת פסים כי כן תלבשן בנות המלך הבתולת מעילים ויצא אותה משרתו החוץ ונעל הדלת אחריה׃
19And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head, and went her way, crying aloud as she went.
19Tamar répandit de la cendre sur sa tête, et déchira sa tunique bigarrée; elle mit la main sur sa tête, et s'en alla en poussant des cris.
19ותקח תמר אפר על ראשה וכתנת הפסים אשר עליה קרעה ותשם ידה על ראשה ותלך הלוך וזעקה׃
20And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but now hold thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; take not this thing to heart. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house.
20Absalom, son frère, lui dit: Amnon, ton frère, a-t-il été avec toi? Maintenant, ma soeur, tais-toi, c'est ton frère; ne prends pas cette affaire trop à coeur. Et Tamar, désolée, demeura dans la maison d'Absalom, son frère.
20ויאמר אליה אבשלום אחיה האמינון אחיך היה עמך ועתה אחותי החרישי אחיך הוא אל תשיתי את לבך לדבר הזה ותשב תמר ושממה בית אבשלום אחיה׃
21But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth.
21Le roi David apprit toutes ces choses, et il fut très irrité.
21והמלך דוד שמע את כל הדברים האלה ויחר לו מאד׃
22And Absalom spake unto Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
22Absalom ne parla ni en bien ni en mal avec Amnon; mais il le prit en haine, parce qu'il avait déshonoré Tamar, sa soeur.
22ולא דבר אבשלום עם אמנון למרע ועד טוב כי שנא אבשלום את אמנון על דבר אשר ענה את תמר אחתו׃
23And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king's sons.
23Deux ans après, comme Absalom avait les tondeurs à Baal-Hatsor, près d'Ephraïm, il invita tous les fils du roi.
23ויהי לשנתים ימים ויהיו גזזים לאבשלום בבעל חצור אשר עם אפרים ויקרא אבשלום לכל בני המלך׃
24And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheep-shearers; let the king, I pray thee, and his servants go with thy servant.
24Absalom alla vers le roi, et dit: Voici, ton serviteur a les tondeurs; que le roi et ses serviteurs viennent chez ton serviteur.
24ויבא אבשלום אל המלך ויאמר הנה נא גזזים לעבדך ילך נא המלך ועבדיו עם עבדך׃
25And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.
25Et le roi dit à Absalom: Non, mon fils, nous n'irons pas tous, de peur que nous ne te soyons à charge. Absalom le pressa; mais le roi ne voulut point aller, et il le bénit.
25ויאמר המלך אל אבשלום אל בני אל נא נלך כלנו ולא נכבד עליך ויפרץ בו ולא אבה ללכת ויברכהו׃
26Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?
26Absalom dit: Permets du moins à Amnon, mon frère, de venir avec nous. Le roi lui répondit: Pourquoi irait-il chez toi?
26ויאמר אבשלום ולא ילך נא אתנו אמנון אחי ויאמר לו המלך למה ילך עמך׃
27But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him.
27Sur les instances d'Absalom, le roi laissa aller avec lui Amnon et tous ses fils.
27ויפרץ בו אבשלום וישלח אתו את אמנון ואת כל בני המלך׃
28And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him; fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.
28Absalom donna cet ordre à ses serviteurs: Faites attention quand le coeur d'Amnon sera égayé par le vin et que je vous dirai: Frappez Amnon! Alors tuez-le; ne craignez point, n'est-ce pas moi qui vous l'ordonne? Soyez fermes, et montrez du courage!
28ויצו אבשלום את נעריו לאמר ראו נא כטוב לב אמנון ביין ואמרתי אליכם הכו את אמנון והמתם אתו אל תיראו הלוא כי אנכי צויתי אתכם חזקו והיו לבני חיל׃
29And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.
29Les serviteurs d'Absalom traitèrent Amnon comme Absalom l'avait ordonné. Et tous les fils du roi se levèrent, montèrent chacun sur son mulet, et s'enfuirent.
29ויעשו נערי אבשלום לאמנון כאשר צוה אבשלום ויקמו כל בני המלך וירכבו איש על פרדו וינסו׃
30And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that the tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left.
30Comme ils étaient en chemin, le bruit parvint à David qu'Absalom avait tué tous les fils du roi, et qu'il n'en était pas resté un seul.
30ויהי המה בדרך והשמעה באה אל דוד לאמר הכה אבשלום את כל בני המלך ולא נותר מהם אחד׃
31Then the king arose, and rent his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.
31Le roi se leva, déchira ses vêtements, et se coucha par terre; et tous ses serviteurs étaient là, les vêtements déchirés.
31ויקם המלך ויקרע את בגדיו וישכב ארצה וכל עבדיו נצבים קרעי בגדים׃
32And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men the king's sons; for Amnon only is dead; for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
32Jonadab, fils de Schimea, frère de David, prit la parole et dit: Que mon seigneur ne pense point que tous les jeunes gens, fils du roi, ont été tués, car Amnon seul est mort; et c'est l'effet d'une résolution d'Absalom, depuis le jour où Amnon a déshonoré Tamar, sa soeur.
32ויען יונדב בן שמעה אחי דוד ויאמר אל יאמר אדני את כל הנערים בני המלך המיתו כי אמנון לבדו מת כי על פי אבשלום היתה שימה מיום ענתו את תמר אחתו׃
33Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king's sons are dead; for Amnon only is dead.
33Que le roi mon seigneur ne se tourmente donc point dans l'idée que tous les fils du roi sont morts, car Amnon seul est mort.
33ועתה אל ישם אדני המלך אל לבו דבר לאמר כל בני המלך מתו כי אם אמנון לבדו מת׃
34But Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill-side behind him.
34Absalom prit la fuite. Or le jeune homme placé en sentinelle leva les yeux et regarda. Et voici, une grande troupe venait par le chemin qui était derrière lui, du côté de la montagne.
34ויברח אבשלום וישא הנער הצפה את עינו וירא והנה עם רב הלכים מדרך אחריו מצד ההר׃
35And Jonadab said unto the king, Behold, the king's sons are come: as thy servant said, so it is.
35Jonadab dit au roi: Voici les fils du roi qui arrivent! Ainsi se confirme ce que disait ton serviteur.
35ויאמר יונדב אל המלך הנה בני המלך באו כדבר עבדך כן היה׃
36And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voice, and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.
36Comme il achevait de parler, voici, les fils du roi arrivèrent. Ils élevèrent la voix, et pleurèrent; le roi aussi et tous ses serviteurs versèrent d'abondantes larmes.
36ויהי ככלתו לדבר והנה בני המלך באו וישאו קולם ויבכו וגם המלך וכל עבדיו בכו בכי גדול מאד׃
37But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihur, king of Geshur. And [David] mourned for his son every day.
37Absalom s'était enfui, et il alla chez Talmaï, fils d'Ammihur, roi de Gueschur. Et David pleurait tous les jours son fils.
37ואבשלום ברח וילך אל תלמי בן עמיחור מלך גשור ויתאבל על בנו כל הימים׃
38So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.
38Absalom resta trois ans à Gueschur, où il était allé, après avoir pris la fuite.
38ואבשלום ברח וילך גשור ויהי שם שלש שנים׃
39And [the soul of] king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
39Le roi David cessa de poursuivre Absalom, car il était consolé de la mort d'Amnon.
39ותכל דוד המלך לצאת אל אבשלום כי נחם על אמנון כי מת׃
