¹Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.

¹Joab, fils de Tseruja, s'aperçut que le coeur du roi était porté pour Absalom.

¹וידע יואב בן צריה כי לב המלך על אבשלום׃

²And Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on mourning apparel, I pray thee, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that hath a long time mourned for the dead:

²Il envoya chercher à Tekoa une femme habile, et il lui dit: Montre-toi désolée, et revêts des habits de deuil; ne t'oins pas d'huile, et sois comme une femme qui depuis longtemps pleure un mort.

²וישלח יואב תקועה ויקח משם אשה חכמה ויאמר אליה התאבלי נא ולבשי נא בגדי אבל ואל תסוכי שמן והיית כאשה זה ימים רבים מתאבלת על מת׃

³and go in to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth.

³Tu iras ainsi vers le roi, et tu lui parleras de cette manière. Et Joab lui mit dans la bouche ce qu'elle devait dire.

³ובאת אל המלך ודברת אליו כדבר הזה וישם יואב את הדברים בפיה׃

⁴And when the woman of Tekoa spake to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help, O king.

⁴La femme de Tekoa alla parler au roi. Elle tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, et elle dit: O roi, sauve-moi!

⁴ותאמר האשה התקעית אל המלך ותפל על אפיה ארצה ותשתחו ותאמר הושעה המלך׃

⁵And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, Of a truth I am a widow, and my husband is dead.

⁵Le roi lui dit: Qu'as-tu? Elle répondit: Oui, je suis veuve, mon mari est mort!

⁵ויאמר לה המלך מה לך ותאמר אבל אשה אלמנה אני וימת אישי׃

⁶And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other, and killed him.

⁶Ta servante avait deux fils; ils se sont tous deux querellés dans les champs, et il n'y avait personne pour les séparer; l'un a frappé l'autre, et l'a tué.

⁶ולשפחתך שני בנים וינצו שניהם בשדה ואין מציל ביניהם ויכו האחד את האחד וימת אתו׃

⁷And, behold, the whole family is risen against thy handmaid, and they say, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he slew, and so destroy the heir also. Thus will they quench my coal which is left, and will leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the face of the earth.

⁷Et voici, toute la famille s'est levée contre ta servante, en disant: Livre le meurtrier de son frère! Nous voulons le faire mourir, pour la vie de son frère qu'il a tué; nous voulons détruire même l'héritier! Ils éteindraient ainsi le tison qui me reste, pour ne laisser à mon mari ni nom ni survivant sur la face de la terre.

⁷והנה קמה כל המשפחה על שפחתך ויאמרו תני את מכה אחיו ונמתהו בנפש אחיו אשר הרג ונשמידה גם את היורש וכבו את גחלתי אשר נשארה לבלתי שום לאישי שם ושארית על פני האדמה׃

⁸And the king said unto the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.

⁸Le roi dit à la femme: Va dans ta maison. Je donnerai des ordres à ton sujet.

⁸ויאמר המלך אל האשה לכי לביתך ואני אצוה עליך׃

⁹And the woman of Tekoa said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.

⁹La femme de Tekoa dit au roi: C'est sur moi, ô roi mon seigneur, et sur la maison de mon père, que le châtiment va tomber; le roi et son trône n'auront pas à en souffrir.

⁹ותאמר האשה התקועית אל המלך עלי אדני המלך העון ועל בית אבי והמלך וכסאו נקי׃

¹⁰And the king said, Whosoever saith aught unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.

¹⁰Le roi dit: Si quelqu'un parle contre toi, amène-le-moi, et il ne lui arrivera plus de te toucher.

¹⁰ויאמר המלך המדבר אליך והבאתו אלי ולא יסיף עוד לגעת בך׃

¹¹Then said she, I pray thee, let the king remember Jehovah thy God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.

¹¹Elle dit: Que le roi se souvienne de l'Eternel, ton Dieu, afin que le vengeur du sang n'augmente pas la ruine, et qu'on ne détruise pas mon fils! Et il dit: L'Eternel est vivant! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de ton fils.

¹¹ותאמר יזכר נא המלך את יהוה אלהיך מהרבית גאל הדם לשחת ולא ישמידו את בני ויאמר חי יהוה אם יפל משערת בנך ארצה׃

¹²Then the woman said, Let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak a word unto my lord the king. And he said, Say on.

¹²La femme dit: Permets que ta servante dise un mot à mon seigneur le roi. Et il dit: Parle!

¹²ותאמר האשה תדבר נא שפחתך אל אדני המלך דבר ויאמר דברי׃

¹³And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou devised such a thing against the people of God? for in speaking this word the king is as one that is guilty, in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished one.

¹³La femme dit: Pourquoi penses-tu de la sorte à l'égard du peuple de Dieu, puisqu'il résulte des paroles mêmes du roi que le roi est comme coupable en ne rappelant pas celui qu'il a proscrit?

¹³ותאמר האשה ולמה חשבתה כזאת על עם אלהים ומדבר המלך הדבר הזה כאשם לבלתי השיב המלך את נדחו׃

¹⁴For we must needs die, and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God take away life, but deviseth means, that he that is banished be not an outcast from him.

¹⁴Il nous faut certainement mourir, et nous serons comme des eaux répandues à terre et qui ne se rassemblent plus; Dieu n'ôte pas la vie, mais il désire que le fugitif ne reste pas banni de sa présence.

¹⁴כי מות נמות וכמים הנגרים ארצה אשר לא יאספו ולא ישא אלהים נפש וחשב מחשבות לבלתי ידח ממנו נדח׃

¹⁵Now therefore seeing that I am come to speak this word unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.

¹⁵Maintenant, si je suis venue dire ces choses au roi mon seigneur, c'est que le peuple m'a effrayée. Et ta servante a dit: Je veux parler au roi; peut-être le roi fera-t-il ce que dira sa servante.

¹⁵ועתה אשר באתי לדבר אל המלך אדני את הדבר הזה כי יראני העם ותאמר שפחתך אדברה נא אל המלך אולי יעשה המלך את דבר אמתו׃

¹⁶For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

¹⁶Oui, le roi écoutera sa servante, pour la délivrer de la main de ceux qui cherchent à nous exterminer, moi et mon fils, de l'héritage de Dieu.

¹⁶כי ישמע המלך להציל את אמתו מכף האיש להשמיד אתי ואת בני יחד מנחלת אלהים׃

¹⁷Then thy handmaid said, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: and Jehovah thy God be with thee.

¹⁷Ta servante a dit: Que la parole de mon seigneur le roi me donne le repos. Car mon seigneur le roi est comme un ange de Dieu, prêt à entendre le bien et le mal. Et que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, soit avec toi!

¹⁷ותאמר שפחתך יהיה נא דבר אדני המלך למנוחה כי כמלאך האלהים כן אדני המלך לשמע הטוב והרע ויהוה אלהיך יהי עמך׃

¹⁸Then the king answered and said unto the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, aught that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.

¹⁸Le roi répondit, et dit à la femme: Ne me cache pas ce que je vais te demander. Et la femme dit: Que mon seigneur le roi parle!

¹⁸ויען המלך ויאמר אל האשה אל נא תכחדי ממני דבר אשר אנכי שאל אתך ותאמר האשה ידבר נא אדני המלך׃

¹⁹And the king said, Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from aught that my lord the king hath spoken; for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thy handmaid;

¹⁹Le roi dit alors: La main de Joab n'est-elle pas avec toi dans tout ceci? Et la femme répondit: Aussi vrai que ton âme est vivante, ô roi mon seigneur, il n'y a rien à droite ni à gauche de tout ce que dit mon seigneur le roi. C'est, en effet, ton serviteur Joab qui m'a donné des ordres, et qui a mis dans la bouche de ta servante toutes ces paroles.

¹⁹ויאמר המלך היד יואב אתך בכל זאת ותען האשה ותאמר חי נפשך אדני המלך אם אש להמין ולהשמיל מכל אשר דבר אדני המלך כי עבדך יואב הוא צוני והוא שם בפי שפחתך את כל הדברים האלה׃

²⁰to change the face of the matter hath thy servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

²⁰C'est pour donner à la chose une autre tournure que ton serviteur Joab a fait cela. Mais mon seigneur est aussi sage qu'un ange de Dieu, pour connaître tout ce qui se passe sur la terre.

²⁰לבעבור סבב את פני הדבר עשה עבדך יואב את הדבר הזה ואדני חכם כחכמת מלאך האלהים לדעת את כל אשר בארץ׃

²¹And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man Absalom back.

²¹Le roi dit à Joab: Voici, je veux bien faire cela; va donc, ramène le jeune homme Absalom.

²¹ויאמר המלך אל יואב הנה נא עשיתי את הדבר הזה ולך השב את הנער את אבשלום׃

²²And Joab fell to the ground on his face, and did obeisance, and blessed the king: and Joab said, To-day thy servant knoweth that I have found favor in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king hath performed the request of his servant.

²²Joab tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, et il bénit le roi. Puis il dit: Ton serviteur connaît aujourd'hui que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ô roi mon seigneur, puisque le roi agit selon la parole de son serviteur.

²²ויפל יואב אל פניו ארצה וישתחו ויברך את המלך ויאמר יואב היום ידע עבדך כי מצאתי חן בעיניך אדני המלך אשר עשה המלך את דבר עבדו׃

²³So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

²³Et Joab se leva et partit pour Gueschur, et il ramena Absalom à Jérusalem.

²³ויקם יואב וילך גשורה ויבא את אבשלום ירושלם׃

²⁴And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, but let him not see my face. So Absalom turned to his own house, and saw not the king's face.

²⁴Mais le roi dit: Qu'il se retire dans sa maison, et qu'il ne voie point ma face. Et Absalom se retira dans sa maison, et il ne vit point la face du roi.

²⁴ויאמר המלך יסב אל ביתו ופני לא יראה ויסב אבשלום אל ביתו ופני המלך לא ראה׃

²⁵Now in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

²⁵Il n'y avait pas un homme dans tout Israël aussi renommé qu'Absalom pour sa beauté; depuis la plante du pied jusqu'au sommet de la tête, il n'y avait point en lui de défaut.

²⁵וכאבשלום לא היה איש יפה בכל ישראל להלל מאד מכף רגלו ועד קדקדו לא היה בו מום׃

²⁶And when he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year's end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it); he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king's weight.

²⁶Lorsqu'il se rasait la tête, -c'était chaque année qu'il se la rasait, parce que sa chevelure lui pesait, - le poids des cheveux de sa tête était de deux cents sicles, poids du roi.

²⁶ובגלחו את ראשו והיה מקץ ימים לימים אשר יגלח כי כבד עליו וגלחו ושקל את שער ראשו מאתים שקלים באבן המלך׃

²⁷And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance.

²⁷Il naquit à Absalom trois fils, et une fille nommée Tamar, qui était une femme belle de figure.

²⁷ויולדו לאבשלום שלושה בנים ובת אחת ושמה תמר היא היתה אשה יפת מראה׃

²⁸And Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem; and he saw not the king's face.

²⁸Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem, sans voir la face du roi.

²⁸וישב אבשלום בירושלם שנתים ימים ופני המלך לא ראה׃

²⁹Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, but he would not come.

²⁹Il fit demander Joab, pour l'envoyer vers le roi; mais Joab ne voulut point venir auprès de lui. Il le fit demander une seconde fois; et Joab ne voulut point venir.

²⁹וישלח אבשלום אל יואב לשלח אתו אל המלך ולא אבה לבוא אליו וישלח עוד שנית ולא אבה לבוא׃

³⁰Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

³⁰Absalom dit alors à ses serviteurs: Voyez, le champ de Joab est à côté du mien; il y a de l'orge; allez et mettez-y le feu. Et les serviteurs d'Absalom mirent le feu au champ.

³⁰ויאמר אל עבדיו ראו חלקת יואב אל ידי ולו שם שערים לכו והוצתיה באש ויצתו עבדי אבשלום את החלקה באש׃

³¹Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire?

³¹Joab se leva et se rendit auprès d'Absalom, dans sa maison. Il lui dit: Pourquoi tes serviteurs ont-ils mis le feu au champ qui m'appartient?

³¹ויקם יואב ויבא אל אבשלום הביתה ויאמר אליו למה הציתו עבדך את החלקה אשר לי באש׃

³²And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it were better for me to be there still. Now therefore let me see the king's face; and if there be iniquity in me, let him kill me.

³²Absalom répondit à Joab: Voici, je t'ai fait dire: Viens ici, et je t'enverrai vers le roi, afin que tu lui dises: Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Gueschur? Il vaudrait mieux pour moi que j'y fusse encore. Je désire maintenant voir la face du roi; et s'il y a quelque crime en moi, qu'il me fasse mourir.

³²ויאמר אבשלום אל יואב הנה שלחתי אליך לאמר בא הנה ואשלחה אתך אל המלך לאמר למה באתי מגשור טוב לי עד אני שם ועתה אראה פני המלך ואם יש בי עון והמתני׃

³³So Joab came to the king, and told him; and when he had called for Absalom, he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom.

³³Joab alla vers le roi, et lui rapporta cela. Et le roi appela Absalom, qui vint auprès de lui et se prosterna la face contre terre en sa présence. Le roi baisa Absalom.

³³ויבא יואב אל המלך ויגד לו ויקרא אל אבשלום ויבא אל המלך וישתחו לו על אפיו ארצה לפני המלך וישק המלך לאבשלום׃
