¹And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.

¹On vint dire à Joab: Voici, le roi pleure et se lamente à cause d'Absalom.

¹ויגד ליואב הנה המלך בכה ויתאבל על אבשלם׃

²And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people; for the people heard say that day, The king grieveth for his son.

²Et la victoire, ce jour-là, fut changée en deuil pour tout le peuple, car en ce jour le peuple entendait dire: Le roi est affligé à cause de son fils.

²ותהי התשעה ביום ההוא לאבל לכל העם כי שמע העם ביום ההוא לאמר נעצב המלך על בנו׃

³And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people that are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

³Ce même jour, le peuple rentra dans la ville à la dérobée, comme l'auraient fait des gens honteux d'avoir pris la fuite dans le combat.

³ויתגנב העם ביום ההוא לבוא העיר כאשר יתגנב העם הנכלמים בנוסם במלחמה׃

⁴And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

⁴Le roi s'était couvert le visage, et il criait à haute voix: Mon fils Absalom! Absalom, mon fils, mon fils!

⁴והמלך לאט את פניו ויזעק המלך קול גדול בני אבשלום אבשלום בני בני׃

⁵And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, who this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;

⁵Joab entra dans la chambre où était le roi, et dit: Tu couvres aujourd'hui de confusion la face de tous tes serviteurs, qui ont aujourd'hui sauvé ta vie, celle de tes fils et de tes filles, celle de tes femmes et de tes concubines.

⁵ויבא יואב אל המלך הבית ויאמר הבשת היום את פני כל עבדיך הממלטים את נפשך היום ואת נפש בניך ובנתיך ונפש נשיך ונפש פלגשיך׃

⁶in that thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee. For thou hast declared this day, that princes and servants are nought unto thee: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.

⁶Tu aimes ceux qui te haïssent et tu hais ceux qui t'aiment, car tu montres aujourd'hui qu'il n'y a pour toi ni chefs ni serviteurs; et je vois maintenant que, si Absalom vivait et que nous fussions tous morts en ce jour, cela serait agréable à tes yeux.

⁶לאהבה את שנאיך ולשנא את אהביך כי הגדת היום כי אין לך שרים ועבדים כי ידעתי היום כי לא אבשלום חי וכלנו היום מתים כי אז ישר בעיניך׃

⁷Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants; for I swear by Jehovah, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry a man with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now.

⁷Lève-toi donc, sors, et parle au coeur de tes serviteurs! Car je jure par l'Eternel que, si tu ne sors pas, il ne restera pas un homme avec toi cette nuit; et ce sera pour toi pire que tous les malheurs qui te sont arrivés depuis ta jeunesse jusqu'à présent.

⁷ועתה קום צא ודבר על לב עבדיך כי ביהוה נשבעתי כי אינך יוצא אם ילין איש אתך הלילה ורעה לך זאת מכל הרעה אשר באה עליך מנעריך עד עתה׃

⁸Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king is sitting in the gate: and all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent.

⁸Alors le roi se leva, et il s'assit à la porte. On fit dire à tout le peuple: Voici, le roi est assis à la porte. Et tout le peuple vint devant le roi. Cependant Israël s'était enfui, chacun dans sa tente.

⁸ויקם המלך וישב בשער ולכל העם הגידו לאמר הנה המלך יושב בשער ויבא כל העם לפני המלך וישראל נס איש לאהליו׃

⁹And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land from Absalom.

⁹Et dans toutes les tribus d'Israël, tout le peuple était en contestation, disant: Le roi nous a délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, c'est lui qui nous a sauvés de la main des Philistins; et maintenant il a dû fuir du pays devant Absalom.

⁹ויהי כל העם נדון בכל שבטי ישראל לאמר המלך הצילנו מכף איבינו והוא מלטנו מכף פלשתים ועתה ברח מן הארץ מעל אבשלום׃

¹⁰And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?

¹⁰Or Absalom, que nous avions oint pour qu'il régnât sur nous, est mort dans la bataille: pourquoi ne parlez-vous pas de faire revenir le roi?

¹⁰ואבשלום אשר משחנו עלינו מת במלחמה ועתה למה אתם מחרשים להשיב את המלך׃

¹¹And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, [to bring him] to his house.

¹¹De son côté, le roi David envoya dire aux sacrificateurs Tsadok et Abiathar: Parlez aux anciens de Juda, et dites-leur: Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi dans sa maison? -Car ce qui se disait dans tout Israël était parvenu jusqu'au roi.

¹¹והמלך דוד שלח אל צדוק ואל אביתר הכהנים לאמר דברו אל זקני יהודה לאמר למה תהיו אחרנים להשיב את המלך אל ביתו ודבר כל ישראל בא אל המלך אל ביתו׃

¹²Ye are my brethren, ye are my bone and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?

¹²Vous êtes mes frères, vous êtes mes os et ma chair; pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi?

¹²אחי אתם עצמי ובשרי אתם ולמה תהיו אחרנים להשיב את המלך׃

¹³And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

¹³Vous direz aussi à Amasa: N'es-tu pas mon os et ma chair? Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne deviens pas devant moi pour toujours chef de l'armée à la place de Joab!

¹³ולעמשא תמרו הלוא עצמי ובשרי אתה כה יעשה לי אלהים וכה יוסיף אם לא שר צבא תהיה לפני כל הימים תחת יואב׃

¹⁴And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as [the heart of] one man; so that they sent unto the king, [saying], Return thou, and all thy servants.

¹⁴David fléchit le coeur de tous ceux de Juda, comme s'ils n'eussent été qu'un seul homme; et ils envoyèrent dire au roi: Reviens, toi, et tous tes serviteurs.

¹⁴ויט את לבב כל איש יהודה כאיש אחד וישלחו אל המלך שוב אתה וכל עבדיך׃

¹⁵So the king returned, and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan.

¹⁵Le roi revint et arriva jusqu'au Jourdain; et Juda se rendit à Guilgal, afin d'aller à la rencontre du roi et de lui faire passer le Jourdain.

¹⁵וישב המלך ויבא עד הירדן ויהודה בא הגלגלה ללכת לקראת המלך להעביר את המלך את הירדן׃

¹⁶And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, who was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

¹⁶Schimeï, fils de Guéra, Benjamite, qui était de Bachurim, se hâta de descendre avec ceux de Juda à la rencontre du roi David.

¹⁶וימהר שמעי בן גרא בן הימיני אשר מבחורים וירד עם איש יהודה לקראת המלך דוד׃

¹⁷And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through the Jordan in the presence of the king.

¹⁷Il avait avec lui mille hommes de Benjamin, et Tsiba, serviteur de la maison de Saül, et les quinze fils et les vingt serviteurs de Tsiba. Ils passèrent le Jourdain à la vue du roi.

¹⁷ואלף איש עמו מבנימן וציבא נער בית שאול וחמשת עשר בניו ועשרים עבדיו אתו וצלחו הירדן לפני המלך׃

¹⁸And there went over a ferry-boat to bring over the king's household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he was come over the Jordan.

¹⁸Le bateau, mis à la disposition du roi, faisait la traversée pour transporter sa maison; et au moment où le roi allait passer le Jourdain, Schimeï, fils de Guéra, se prosterna devant lui.

¹⁸ועברה העברה לעביר את בית המלך ולעשות הטוב בעינו ושמעי בן גרא נפל לפני המלך בעברו בירדן׃

¹⁹And he said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

¹⁹Et il dit au roi: Que mon seigneur ne tienne pas compte de mon iniquité, qu'il oublie que ton serviteur l'a offensé le jour où le roi mon seigneur sortait de Jérusalem, et que le roi n'y ait point égard!

¹⁹ויאמר אל המלך אל יחשב לי אדני עון ואל תזכר את אשר העוה עבדך ביום אשר יצא אדני המלך מירושלם לשום המלך אל לבו׃

²⁰For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

²⁰Car ton serviteur reconnaît qu'il a péché. Et voici, je viens aujourd'hui le premier de toute la maison de Joseph à la rencontre du roi mon seigneur.

²⁰כי ידע עבדך כי אני חטאתי והנה באתי היום ראשון לכל בית יוסף לרדת לקראת אדני המלך׃

²¹But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed Jehovah's anointed?

²¹Alors Abischaï, fils de Tseruja, prit la parole et dit: Schimeï ne doit-il pas mourir pour avoir maudit l'oint de l'Eternel?

²¹ויען אבישי בן צרויה ויאמר התחת זאת לא יומת שמעי כי קלל את משיח יהוה׃

²²And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

²²Mais David dit: Qu'ai-je affaire avec vous, fils de Tseruja, et pourquoi vous montrez-vous aujourd'hui mes adversaires? Aujourd'hui ferait-on mourir un homme en Israël? Ne sais-je donc pas que je règne aujourd'hui sur Israël?

²²ויאמר דוד מה לי ולכם בני צרויה כי תהיו לי היום לשטן היום יומת איש בישראל כי הלוא ידעתי כי היום אני מלך על ישראל׃

²³And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

²³Et le roi dit à Schimeï: Tu ne mourras point! Et le roi le lui jura.

²³ויאמר המלך אל שמעי לא תמות וישבע לו המלך׃

²⁴And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.

²⁴Mephiboscheth, fils de Saül, descendit aussi à la rencontre du roi. Il n'avait point soigné ses pieds, ni fait sa barbe, ni lavé ses vêtements, depuis le jour où le roi s'en était allé jusqu'à celui où il revenait en paix.

²⁴ומפבשת בן שאול ירד לקראת המלך ולא עשה רגליו ולא עשה שפמו ואת בגדיו לא כבס למן היום לכת המלך עד היום אשר בא בשלום׃

²⁵And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?

²⁵Lorsqu'il se rendit au-devant du roi à Jérusalem, le roi lui dit: Pourquoi n'es-tu pas venu avec moi, Mephiboscheth?

²⁵ויהי כי בא ירושלם לקראת המלך ויאמר לו המלך למה לא הלכת עמי מפיבשת׃

²⁶And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because thy servant is lame.

²⁶Et il répondit: O roi mon seigneur, mon serviteur m'a trompé, car ton serviteur, qui est boiteux, avait dit: Je ferai seller mon âne, je le monterai, et j'irai avec le roi.

²⁶ויאמר אדני המלך עבדי רמני כי אמר עבדך אחבשה לי החמור וארכב עליה ואלך את המלך כי פסח עבדך׃

²⁷And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

²⁷Et il a calomnié ton serviteur auprès de mon seigneur le roi. Mais mon seigneur le roi est comme un ange de Dieu. Fais ce qui te semblera bon.

²⁷וירגל בעבדך אל אדני המלך ואדני המלך כמלאך האלהים ועשה הטוב בעיניך׃

²⁸For all my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more unto the king?

²⁸Car tous ceux de la maison de mon père n'ont été que des gens dignes de mort devant le roi mon seigneur; et cependant tu as mis ton serviteur au nombre de ceux qui mangent à ta table. Quel droit puis-je encore avoir, et qu'ai-je à demander au roi?

²⁸כי לא היה כל בית אבי כי אם אנשי מות לאדני המלך ותשת את עבדך באכלי שלחנך ומה יש לי עוד צדקה ולזעק עוד אל המלך׃

²⁹And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I say, Thou and Ziba divide the land.

²⁹Le roi lui dit: A quoi bon toutes tes paroles? Je l'ai déclaré: Toi et Tsiba, vous partagerez les terres.

²⁹ויאמר לו המלך למה תדבר עוד דבריך אמרתי אתה וציבא תחלקו את השדה׃

³⁰And Mephibosheth said unto the king, yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come in peace unto his own house.

³⁰Et Mephiboscheth dit au roi: Qu'il prenne même le tout, puisque le roi mon seigneur rentre en paix dans sa maison.

³⁰ויאמר מפיבשת אל המלך גם את הכל יקח אחרי אשר בא אדני המלך בשלום אל ביתו׃

³¹And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over the Jordan with the king, to conduct him over the Jordan.

³¹Barzillaï, le Galaadite, descendit de Roguelim, et passa le Jourdain avec le roi, pour l'accompagner jusqu'au delà du Jourdain.

³¹וברזלי הגלעדי ירד מרגלים ויעבר את המלך הירדן לשלחו את בירדן׃

³²Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

³²Barzillaï était très vieux, âgé de quatre-vingts ans. Il avait entretenu le roi pendant son séjour à Mahanaïm, car c'était un homme fort riche.

³²וברזלי זקן מאד בן שמנים שנה והוא כלכל את המלך בשיבתו במחנים כי איש גדול הוא מאד׃

³³And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will sustain thee with me in Jerusalem.

³³Le roi dit à Barzillaï: Viens avec moi, je te nourrirai chez moi à Jérusalem.

³³ויאמר המלך אל ברזלי אתה עבר אתי וכלכלתי אתך עמדי בירושלם׃

³⁴And Barzillai said unto the king, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

³⁴Mais Barzillaï répondit au roi: Combien d'années vivrai-je encore, pour que je monte avec le roi à Jérusalem?

³⁴ויאמר ברזלי אל המלך כמה ימי שני חיי כי אעלה את המלך ירושלם׃

³⁵I am this day fourscore years old: can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

³⁵Je suis aujourd'hui âgé de quatre-vingts ans. Puis-je connaître ce qui est bon et ce qui est mauvais? Ton serviteur peut-il savourer ce qu'il mange et ce qu'il boit? Puis-je encore entendre la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses? Et pourquoi ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à mon seigneur le roi?

³⁵בן שמנים שנה אנכי היום האדע בין טוב לרע אם יטעם עבדך את אשר אכל ואת אשר אשתה אם אשמע עוד בקול שרים ושרות ולמה יהיה עבדך עוד למשא אל אדני המלך׃

³⁶Thy servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

³⁶Ton serviteur ira un peu au delà du Jourdain avec le roi. Pourquoi, d'ailleurs, le roi m'accorderait-il ce bienfait?

³⁶כמעט יעבר עבדך את הירדן את המלך ולמה יגמלני המלך הגמולה הזאת׃

³⁷Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.

³⁷Que ton serviteur s'en retourne, et que je meure dans ma ville, près du sépulcre de mon père et de ma mère! Mais voici ton serviteur Kimham, qui passera avec le roi mon seigneur; fais pour lui ce que tu trouveras bon.

³⁷ישב נא עבדך ואמת בעירי עם קבר אבי ואמי והנה עבדך כמהם יעבר עם אדני המלך ועשה לו את אשר טוב בעיניך׃

³⁸And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.

³⁸Le roi dit: Que Kimham passe avec moi, et je ferai pour lui ce qui te plaira; tout ce que tu désireras de moi, je te l'accorderai.

³⁸ויאמר המלך אתי יעבר כמהם ואני אעשה לו את הטוב בעיניך וכל אשר תבחר עלי אעשה לך׃

³⁹And all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over: and the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

³⁹Quand tout le peuple eut passé le Jourdain et que le roi l'eut aussi passé, le roi baisa Barzillaï et le bénit. Et Barzillaï retourna dans sa demeure.

³⁹ויעבר כל העם את הירדן והמלך עבר וישק המלך לברזלי ויברכהו וישב למקמו׃

⁴⁰So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him: and all the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel.

⁴⁰Le roi se dirigea vers Guilgal, et Kimham l'accompagna. Tout le peuple de Juda et la moitié du peuple d'Israël avaient fait passer le Jourdain au roi.

⁴⁰ויעבר המלך הגלגלה וכמהן עבר עמו וכל עם יהודה ויעבירו את המלך וגם חצי עם ישראל׃

⁴¹And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and brought the king, and his household, over the Jordan, and all David's men with him?

⁴¹Mais voici, tous les hommes d'Israël abordèrent le roi, et lui dirent: Pourquoi nos frères, les hommes de Juda, t'ont-ils enlevé, et ont-ils fait passer le Jourdain au roi, à sa maison, et à tous les gens de David?

⁴¹והנה כל איש ישראל באים אל המלך ויאמרו אל המלך מדוע גנבוך אחינו איש יהודה ויעברו את המלך ואת ביתו את הירדן וכל אנשי דוד עמו׃

⁴²And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then are ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all at the king's cost? or hath he given us any gift?

⁴²Tous les hommes de Juda répondirent aux hommes d'Israël: C'est que le roi nous tient de plus près; et qu'y a-t-il là pour vous irriter? Avons-nous vécu aux dépens du roi? Nous a-t-il fait des présents?

⁴²ויען כל איש יהודה על איש ישראל כי קרוב המלך אלי ולמה זה חרה לך על הדבר הזה האכול אכלנו מן המלך אם נשאת נשא לנו׃

⁴³And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more [right] in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

⁴³Et les hommes d'Israël répondirent aux hommes de Juda: Le roi nous appartient dix fois autant, et David même plus qu'à vous. Pourquoi nous avez-vous méprisés? N'avons-nous pas été les premiers à proposer de faire revenir notre roi? Et les hommes de Juda parlèrent avec plus de violence que les hommes d'Israël.

⁴³ויען איש ישראל את איש יהודה ויאמר עשר ידות לי במלך וגם בדוד אני ממך ומדוע הקלתני ולא היה דברי ראשון לי להשיב את מלכי ויקש דבר איש יהודה מדבר איש ישראל׃
