1Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: and David waxed stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker.
1La guerre dura longtemps entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David. David devenait de plus en plus fort, et la maison de Saül allait en s'affaiblissant.
1ותהי המלחמה ארכה בין בית שאול ובין בית דוד ודוד הלך וחזק ובית שאול הלכים ודלים׃
2And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his first-born was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
2Il naquit à David des fils à Hébron. Son premier-né fut Amnon, d'Achinoam de Jizreel;
2וילדו לדוד בנים בחברון ויהי בכורו אמנון לאחינעם היזרעאלת׃
3and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
3le second, Kileab, d'Abigaïl de Carmel, femme de Nabal; le troisième, Absalom, fils de Maaca, fille de Talmaï, roi de Gueschur;
3ומשנהו כלאב לאביגל אשת נבל הכרמלי והשלשי אבשלום בן מעכה בת תלמי מלך גשור׃
4and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
4le quatrième, Adonija, fils de Haggith; le cinquième, Schephathia, fils d'Abithal;
4והרביעי אדניה בן חגית והחמישי שפטיה בן אביטל׃
5and the sixth, Ithream, of Eglah, David's wife. These were born to David in Hebron.
5et le sixième, Jithream, d'Egla, femme de David. Ce sont là ceux qui naquirent à David à Hébron.
5והששי יתרעם לעגלה אשת דוד אלה ילדו לדוד בחברון׃
6And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong in the house of Saul.
6Pendant la guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David, Abner tint ferme pour la maison de Saül.
6ויהי בהיות המלחמה בין בית שאול ובין בית דוד ואבנר היה מתחזק בבית שאול׃
7Now Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and [Ish-bosheth] said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine?
7Or Saül avait eu une concubine, nommée Ritspa, fille d'Ajja. Et Isch-Boscheth dit à Abner: Pourquoi es-tu venu vers la concubine de mon père?
7ולשאול פלגש ושמה רצפה בת איה ויאמר אל אבנר מדוע באתה אל פילגש אבי׃
8Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head that belongeth to Judah? This day do I show kindness unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David; and yet thou chargest me this day with a fault concerning this woman.
8Abner fut très irrité des paroles d'Isch-Boscheth, et il répondit: Suis-je une tête de chien, qui tienne pour Juda? Je fais aujourd'hui preuve de bienveillance envers la maison de Saül, ton père, envers ses frères et ses amis, je ne t'ai pas livré entre les mains de David, et c'est aujourd'hui que tu me reproches une faute avec cette femme?
8ויחר לאבנר מאד על דברי איש בשת ויאמר הראש כלב אנכי אשר ליהודה היום אעשה חסד עם בית שאול אביך אל אחיו ואל מרעהו ולא המציתך ביד דוד ותפקד עלי עון האשה היום׃
9God do so to Abner, and more also, if, as Jehovah hath sworn to David, I do not even so to him;
9Que Dieu traite Abner dans toute sa rigueur, si je n'agis pas avec David selon ce que l'Eternel a juré à David,
9כה יעשה אלהים לאבנר וכה יסיף לו כי כאשר נשבע יהוה לדוד כי כן אעשה לו׃
10to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba.
10en disant qu'il ferait passer la royauté de la maison de Saül dans la sienne, et qu'il établirait le trône de David sur Israël et sur Juda depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer-Schéba.
10להעביר הממלכה מבית שאול ולהקים את כסא דוד על ישראל ועל יהודה מדן ועד באר שבע׃
11And he could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him.
11Isch-Boscheth n'osa pas répliquer un seul mot à Abner, parce qu'il le craignait.
11ולא יכל עוד להשיב את אבנר דבר מיראתו אתו׃
12And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying [also], Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.
12Abner envoya des messagers à David pour lui dire de sa part: A qui est le pays? Fais alliance avec moi, et voici, ma main t'aidera pour tourner vers toi tout Israël.
12וישלח אבנר מלאכים אל דוד תחתו לאמר למי ארץ לאמר כרתה בריתך אתי והנה ידי עמך להסב אליך את כל ישראל׃
13And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee; but one thing I require of thee: that is, thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal, Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
13Il répondit: Bien! je ferai alliance avec toi; mais je te demande une chose, c'est que tu ne voies point ma face, à moins que tu n'amènes d'abord Mical, fille de Saül, en venant auprès de moi.
13ויאמר טוב אני אכרת אתך ברית אך דבר אחד אנכי שאל מאתך לאמר לא תראה את פני כי אם לפני הביאך את מיכל בת שאול בבאך לראות את פני׃
14And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to me for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
14Et David envoya des messagers à Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, pour lui dire: Donne-moi ma femme Mical, que j'ai fiancée pour cent prépuces de Philistins.
14וישלח דוד מלאכים אל איש בשת בן שאול לאמר תנה את אשתי את מיכל אשר ארשתי לי במאה ערלות פלשתים׃
15And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Paltiel the son of Laish.
15Isch-Boscheth la fit prendre chez son mari Palthiel, fils de Laïsch.
15וישלח איש בשת ויקחה מעם איש מעם פלטיאל בן לוש׃
16And her husband went with her, weeping as he went, and followed her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return: and he returned.
16Et son mari la suivit en pleurant jusqu'à Bachurim. Alors Abner lui dit: Va, retourne-t'en! Et il s'en retourna.
16וילך אתה אישה הלוך ובכה אחריה עד בחרים ויאמר אליו אבנר לך שוב וישב׃
17And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, In times past ye sought for David to be king over you:
17Abner eut un entretien avec les anciens d'Israël, et leur dit: Vous désiriez autrefois d'avoir David pour roi;
17ודבר אבנר היה עם זקני ישראל לאמר גם תמול גם שלשם הייתם מבקשים את דוד למלך עליכם׃
18now then do it; for Jehovah hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies.
18tablissez-le maintenant, car l'Eternel a dit de lui: C'est par David, mon serviteur, que je délivrerai mon peuple d'Israël de la main des Philistins et de la main de tous ses ennemis.
18ועתה עשו כי יהוה אמר אל דוד לאמר ביד דוד עבדי הושיע את עמי ישראל מיד פלשתים ומיד כל איביהם׃
19And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and to the whole house of Benjamin.
19Abner parla aussi à Benjamin, et il alla rapporter aux oreilles de David à Hébron ce qu'avaient résolu Israël et toute la maison de Benjamin.
19וידבר גם אבנר באזני בנימין וילך גם אבנר לדבר באזני דוד בחברון את כל אשר טוב בעיני ישראל ובעיני כל בית בנימן׃
20So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast.
20Il arriva auprès de David à Hébron, accompagné de vingt hommes; et David fit un festin à Abner et à ceux qui étaient avec lui.
20ויבא אבנר אל דוד חברון ואתו עשרים אנשים ויעש דוד לאבנר ולאנשים אשר אתו משתה׃
21And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thy soul desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
21Abner dit à David: Je me lèverai, et je partirai pour rassembler tout Israël vers mon seigneur le roi; ils feront alliance avec toi, et tu règneras entièrement selon ton désir. David renvoya Abner, qui s'en alla en paix.
21ויאמר אבנר אל דוד אקומה ואלכה ואקבצה אל אדני המלך את כל ישראל ויכרתו אתך ברית ומלכת בכל אשר תאוה נפשך וישלח דוד את אבנר וילך בשלום׃
22And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from a foray, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.
22Voici, Joab et les gens de David revinrent d'une excursion, et amenèrent avec eux un grand butin. Abner n'était plus auprès de David à Hébron, car David l'avait renvoyé, et il s'en était allé en paix.
22והנה עבדי דוד ויואב בא מהגדוד ושלל רב עמם הביאו ואבנר איננו עם דוד בחברון כי שלחו וילך בשלום׃
23When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
23Lorsque Joab et toute sa troupe arrivèrent, on fit à Joab ce rapport: Abner, fils de Ner, est venu auprès du roi, qui l'a renvoyé, et il s'en est allé en paix.
23ויואב וכל הצבא אשר אתו באו ויגדו ליואב לאמר בא אבנר בן נר אל המלך וישלחהו וילך בשלום׃
24Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?
24Joab se rendit chez le roi, et dit: Qu'as-tu fait? Voici, Abner est venu vers toi; pourquoi l'as-tu renvoyé et laissé partir?
24ויבא יואב אל המלך ויאמר מה עשיתה הנה בא אבנר אליך למה זה שלחתו וילך הלוך׃
25Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.
25Tu connais Abner, fils de Ner! c'est pour te tromper qu'il est venu, pour épier tes démarches, et pour savoir tout ce que tu fais.
25ידעת את אבנר בן נר כי לפתתך בא ולדעת את מוצאך ואת מבואך ולדעת את כל אשר אתה עשה׃
26And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.
26Et Joab, après avoir quitté David, envoya sur les traces d'Abner des messagers, qui le ramenèrent depuis la citerne de Sira: David n'en savait rien.
26ויצא יואב מעם דוד וישלח מלאכים אחרי אבנר וישבו אתו מבור הסרה ודוד לא ידע׃
27And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
27Lorsque Abner fut de retour à Hébron, Joab le tira à l'écart au milieu de la porte, comme pour lui parler en secret, et là il le frappa au ventre et le tua, pour venger la mort d'Asaël, son frère.
27וישב אבנר חברון ויטהו יואב אל תוך השער לדבר אתו בשלי ויכהו שם החמש וימת בדם עשה אל אחיו׃
28And afterward, when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before Jehovah for ever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner:
28David l'apprit ensuite, et il dit: Je suis à jamais innocent, devant l'Eternel, du sang d'Abner, fils de Ner, et mon royaume l'est aussi.
28וישמע דוד מאחרי כן ויאמר נקי אנכי וממלכתי מעם יהוה עד עולם מדמי אבנר בן נר׃
29let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth by the sword, or that lacketh bread.
29Que ce sang retombe sur Joab et sur toute la maison de son père! Qu'il y ait toujours quelqu'un dans la maison de Joab, qui soit atteint d'un flux ou de la lèpre, ou qui s'appuie sur un bâton, ou qui tombe par l'épée, ou qui manque de pain!
29יחלו על ראש יואב ואל כל בית אביו ואל יכרת מבית יואב זב ומצרע ומחזיק בפלך ונפל בחרב וחסר לחם׃
30So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
30Ainsi Joab et Abischaï, son frère, tuèrent Abner, parce qu'il avait donné la mort à Asaël, leur frère, à Gabaon, dans la bataille.
30ויואב ואבישי אחיו הרגו לאבנר על אשר המית את עשהאל אחיהם בגבעון במלחמה׃
31And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David followed the bier.
31David dit à Joab et à tout le peuple qui était avec lui: Déchirez vos vêtements, ceignez-vous de sacs, et pleurez devant Abner! Et le roi David marcha derrière le cercueil.
31ויאמר דוד אל יואב ואל כל העם אשר אתו קרעו בגדיכם וחגרו שקים וספדו לפני אבנר והמלך דוד הלך אחרי המטה׃
32And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.
32On enterra Abner à Hébron. Le roi éleva la voix et pleura sur le sépulcre d'Abner, et tout le peuple pleura.
32ויקברו את אבנר בחברון וישא המלך את קולו ויבך אל קבר אבנר ויבכו כל העם׃
33And the king lamented for Abner, and said, Should Abner die as a fool dieth?
33Le roi fit une complainte sur Abner, et dit: Abner devait-il mourir comme meurt un criminel?
33ויקנן המלך אל אבנר ויאמר הכמות נבל ימות אבנר׃
34Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: As a man falleth before the children of iniquity, so didst thou fall. And all the people wept again over him.
34Tu n'avais ni les mains liées, ni les pieds dans les chaînes! Tu es tombé comme on tombe devant des méchants. Et tout le peuple pleura de nouveau sur Abner.
34ידך לא אסרות ורגליך לא לנחשתים הגשו כנפול לפני בני עולה נפלת ויספו כל העם לבכות עליו׃
35And all the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David sware, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or aught else, till the sun be down.
35Tout le peuple s'approcha de David pour lui faire prendre quelque nourriture, pendant qu'il était encore jour; mais David jura, en disant: Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si je goûte du pain ou quoi que ce soit avant le coucher du soleil!
35ויבא כל העם להברות את דוד לחם בעוד היום וישבע דוד לאמר כה יעשה לי אלהים וכה יסיף כי אם לפני בוא השמש אטעם לחם או כל מאומה׃
36And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.
36Cela fut connu et approuvé de tout le peuple, qui trouva bon tout ce qu'avait fait le roi.
36וכל העם הכירו וייטב בעיניהם ככל אשר עשה המלך בעיני כל העם טוב׃
37So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner.
37Tout le peuple et tout Israël comprirent en ce jour que ce n'était pas par ordre du roi qu'Abner, fils de Ner, avait été tué.
37וידעו כל העם וכל ישראל ביום ההוא כי לא היתה מהמלך להמית את אבנר בן נר׃
38And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?
38Le roi dit à ses serviteurs: Ne savez-vous pas qu'un chef, qu'un grand homme, est tombé aujourd'hui en Israël?
38ויאמר המלך אל עבדיו הלוא תדעו כי שר וגדול נפל היום הזה בישראל׃
39And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me: Jehovah reward the evil-doer according to his wickedness.
39Je suis encore faible, quoique j'aie reçu l'onction royale; et ces gens, les fils de Tseruja, sont trop puissants pour moi. Que l'Eternel rende selon sa méchanceté à celui qui fait le mal!
39ואנכי היום רך ומשוח מלך והאנשים האלה בני צרויה קשים ממני ישלם יהוה לעשה הרעה כרעתו׃
