1And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
1Après cela, David consulta l'Eternel, en disant: Monterai-je dans une des villes de Juda? L'Eternel lui répondit: Monte. David dit: Où monterai-je? Et l'Eternel répondit: A Hébron.
1ויהי אחרי כן וישאל דוד ביהוה לאמר האעלה באחת ערי יהודה ויאמר יהוה אליו עלה ויאמר דוד אנה אעלה ויאמר חברנה׃
2So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
2David y monta, avec ses deux femmes, Achinoam de Jizreel, et Abigaïl de Carmel, femme de Nabal.
2ויעל שם דוד וגם שתי נשיו אחינעם היזרעלית ואביגיל אשת נבל הכרמלי׃
3And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.
3David fit aussi monter les gens qui étaient auprès de lui, chacun avec sa maison; et ils habitèrent dans les villes d'Hébron.
3ואנשיו אשר עמו העלה דוד איש וביתו וישבו בערי חברון׃
4And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.
4Les hommes de Juda vinrent, et là ils oignirent David pour roi sur la maison de Juda. On informa David que c'étaient les gens de Jabès en Galaad qui avaient enterré Saül.
4ויבאו אנשי יהודה וימשחו שם את דוד למלך על בית יהודה ויגדו לדוד לאמר אנשי יביש גלעד אשר קברו את שאול׃
5And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
5David envoya des messagers aux gens de Jabès en Galaad, pour leur dire: Soyez bénis de l'Eternel, puisque vous avez ainsi montré de la bienveillance envers Saül, votre maître, et que vous l'avez enterré.
5וישלח דוד מלאכים אל אנשי יביש גלעד ויאמר אליהם ברכים אתם ליהוה אשר עשיתם החסד הזה עם אדניכם עם שאול ותקברו אתו׃
6And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
6Et maintenant, que l'Eternel use envers vous de bonté et de fidélité. Moi aussi je vous ferai du bien, parce que vous avez agi de la sorte.
6ועתה יעש יהוה עמכם חסד ואמת וגם אנכי אעשה אתכם הטובה הזאת אשר עשיתם הדבר הזה׃
7Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.
7Que vos mains se fortifient, et soyez de vaillants hommes; car votre maître Saül est mort, et c'est moi que la maison de Juda a oint pour roi sur elle.
7ועתה תחזקנה ידיכם והיו לבני חיל כי מת אדניכם שאול וגם אתי משחו בית יהודה למלך עליהם׃
8Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
8Cependant Abner, fils de Ner, chef de l'armée de Saül, prit Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, et le fit passer à Mahanaïm.
8ואבנר בן נר שר צבא אשר לשאול לקח את איש בשת בן שאול ויעברהו מחנים׃
9and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
9Il l'établit roi sur Galaad, sur les Gueschuriens, sur Jizreel, sur Ephraïm, sur Benjamin, sur tout Israël.
9וימלכהו אל הגלעד ואל האשורי ואל יזרעאל ועל אפרים ועל בנימן ועל ישראל כלה׃
10Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
10Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, était âgé de quarante ans, lorsqu'il devint roi d'Israël, et il régna deux ans. Il n'y eut que la maison de Juda qui resta attachée à David.
10בן ארבעים שנה איש בשת בן שאול במלכו על ישראל ושתים שנים מלך אך בית יהודה היו אחרי דוד׃
11And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
11Le temps pendant lequel David régna à Hébron sur la maison de Juda fut de sept ans et six mois.
11ויהי מספר הימים אשר היה דוד מלך בחברון על בית יהודה שבע שנים וששה חדשים׃
12And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
12Abner, fils de Ner, et les gens d'Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, sortirent de Mahanaïm pour marcher sur Gabaon.
12ויצא אבנר בן נר ועבדי איש בשת בן שאול ממחנים גבעונה׃
13And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
13Joab, fils de Tseruja, et les gens de David, se mirent aussi en marche. Ils se rencontrèrent près de l'étang de Gabaon, et ils s'arrêtèrent les uns en deçà de l'étang, et les autres au delà.
13ויואב בן צרויה ועבדי דוד יצאו ויפגשום על ברכת גבעון יחדו וישבו אלה על הברכה מזה ואלה על הברכה מזה׃
14And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
14Abner dit à Joab: Que ces jeunes gens se lèvent, et qu'ils se battent devant nous! Joab répondit: Qu'ils se lèvent!
14ויאמר אבנר אל יואב יקומו נא הנערים וישחקו לפנינו ויאמר יואב יקמו׃
15Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
15Ils se levèrent et s'avancèrent en nombre égal, douze pour Benjamin et pour Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, et douze des gens de David.
15ויקמו ויעברו במספר שנים עשר לבנימן ולאיש בשת בן שאול ושנים עשר מעבדי דוד׃
16And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
16Chacun saisissant son adversaire par la tête lui enfonça son épée dans le flanc, et ils tombèrent tous ensemble. Et l'on donna à ce lieu, qui est près de Gabaon, le nom de Helkath-Hatsurim.
16ויחזקו איש בראש רעהו וחרבו בצד רעהו ויפלו יחדו ויקרא למקום ההוא חלקת הצרים אשר בגבעון׃
17And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
17Il y eut en ce jour un combat très rude, dans lequel Abner et les hommes d'Israël furent battus par les gens de David.
17ותהי המלחמה קשה עד מאד ביום ההוא וינגף אבנר ואנשי ישראל לפני עבדי דוד׃
18And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.
18Là se trouvaient les trois fils de Tseruja: Joab, Abischaï et Asaël. Asaël avait les pieds légers comme une gazelle des champs:
18ויהיו שם שלשה בני צרויה יואב ואבישי ועשהאל ועשהאל קל ברגליו כאחד הצבים אשר בשדה׃
19And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
19il poursuivit Abner, sans se détourner de lui pour aller à droite ou à gauche.
19וירדף עשהאל אחרי אבנר ולא נטה ללכת על הימין ועל השמאול מאחרי אבנר׃
20Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I.
20Abner regarda derrière lui, et dit: Est-ce toi, Asaël? Et il répondit: C'est moi.
20ויפן אבנר אחריו ויאמר האתה זה עשהאל ויאמר אנכי׃
21And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.
21Abner lui dit: Tire à droite ou à gauche; saisis-toi de l'un de ces jeunes gens, et prends sa dépouille. Mais Asaël ne voulut point se détourner de lui.
21ויאמר לו אבנר נטה לך על ימינך או על שמאלך ואחז לך אחד מהנערים וקח לך את חלצתו ולא אבה עשהאל לסור מאחריו׃
22And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
22Abner dit encore à Asaël: Détourne-toi de moi; pourquoi te frapperais-je et t'abattrais-je en terre? comment ensuite lèverais-je le visage devant ton frère Joab?
22ויסף עוד אבנר לאמר אל עשהאל סור לך מאחרי למה אככה ארצה ואיך אשא פני אל יואב אחיך׃
23Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
23Et Asaël refusa de se détourner. Sur quoi Abner le frappa au ventre avec l'extrémité inférieure de sa lance, et la lance sortit par derrière. Il tomba et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivaient au lieu où Asaël était tombé mort, s'y arrêtaient.
23וימאן לסור ויכהו אבנר באחרי החנית אל החמש ותצא החנית מאחריו ויפל שם וימת תחתו ויהי כל הבא אל המקום אשר נפל שם עשהאל וימת ויעמדו׃
24But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
24Joab et Abischaï poursuivirent Abner, et le soleil se couchait quand ils arrivèrent au coteau d'Amma, qui est en face de Guiach, sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon.
24וירדפו יואב ואבישי אחרי אבנר והשמש באה והמה באו עד גבעת אמה אשר על פני גיח דרך מדבר גבעון׃
25And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.
25Les fils de Benjamin se rallièrent à la suite d'Abner et formèrent un corps, et ils s'arrêtèrent au sommet d'une colline.
25ויתקבצו בני בנימן אחרי אבנר ויהיו לאגדה אחת ויעמדו על ראש גבעה אחת׃
26Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
26Abner appela Joab, et dit: L'épée dévorera-t-elle toujours? Ne sais-tu pas qu'il y aura de l'amertume à la fin? Jusques à quand tarderas-tu à dire au peuple de ne plus poursuivre ses frères?
26ויקרא אבנר אל יואב ויאמר הלנצח תאכל חרב הלוא ידעתה כי מרה תהיה באחרונה ועד מתי לא תאמר לעם לשוב מאחרי אחיהם׃
27And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother.
27Joab répondit: Dieu est vivant! si tu n'eusses parlé, le peuple n'aurait pas cessé avant le matin de poursuivre ses frères.
27ויאמר יואב חי האלהים כי לולא דברת כי אז מהבקר נעלה העם איש מאחרי אחיו׃
28So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
28Et Joab sonna de la trompette, et tout le peuple s'arrêta; ils ne poursuivirent plus Israël, et ils ne continuèrent pas à se battre.
28ויתקע יואב בשופר ויעמדו כל העם ולא ירדפו עוד אחרי ישראל ולא יספו עוד להלחם׃
29And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.
29Abner et ses gens marchèrent toute la nuit dans la plaine; ils passèrent le Jourdain, traversèrent en entier le Bithron, et arrivèrent à Mahanaïm.
29ואבנר ואנשיו הלכו בערבה כל הלילה ההוא ויעברו את הירדן וילכו כל הבתרון ויבאו מחנים׃
30And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
30Joab revint de la poursuite d'Abner, et rassembla tout le peuple; il manquait dix-neuf hommes des gens de David, et Asaël.
30ויואב שב מאחרי אבנר ויקבץ את כל העם ויפקדו מעבדי דוד תשעה עשר איש ועשהאל׃
31But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, [so that] three hundred and threescore men died.
31Mais les gens de David avaient frappé à mort trois cent soixante hommes parmi ceux de Benjamin et d'Abner.
31ועבדי דוד הכו מבנימן ובאנשי אבנר שלש מאות וששים איש מתו׃
32And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron.
32Ils emportèrent Asaël, et l'enterrèrent dans le sépulcre de son père à Bethléhem. Joab et ses gens marchèrent toute la nuit, et le jour paraissait quand ils furent à Hébron.
32וישאו את עשהאל ויקברהו בקבר אביו אשר בית לחם וילכו כל הלילה יואב ואנשיו ויאר להם בחברון׃
