¹And it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

¹Après la mort de Saül, David, qui avait battu les Amalécites, était depuis deux jours revenu à Tsiklag.

¹ויהי אחרי מות שאול ודוד שב מהכות את העמלק וישב דוד בצקלג ימים שנים׃

²it came to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

²Le troisième jour, un homme arriva du camp de Saül, les vêtements déchirés et la tête couverte de terre. Lorsqu'il fut en présence de David, il se jeta par terre et se prosterna.

²ויהי ביום השלישי והנה איש בא מן המחנה מעם שאול ובגדיו קרעים ואדמה על ראשו ויהי בבאו אל דוד ויפל ארצה וישתחו׃

³And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

³David lui dit: D'où viens-tu? Et il lui répondit: Je me suis sauvé du camp d'Israël.

³ויאמר לו דוד אי מזה תבוא ויאמר אליו ממחנה ישראל נמלטתי׃

⁴And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, The people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

⁴David lui dit: Que s'est-il passé? dis-moi donc! Et il répondit: Le peuple s'est enfui du champ de bataille, et un grand nombre d'hommes sont tombés et ont péri; Saül même et Jonathan, son fils, sont morts.

⁴ויאמר אליו דוד מה היה הדבר הגד נא לי ויאמר אשר נס העם מן המלחמה וגם הרבה נפל מן העם וימתו וגם שאול ויהונתן בנו מתו׃

⁵And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?

⁵David dit au jeune homme qui lui apportait ces nouvelles: Comment sais-tu que Saül et Jonathan, son fils, sont morts?

⁵ויאמר דוד אל הנער המגיד לו איך ידעת כי מת שאול ויהונתן בנו׃

⁶And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and the horsemen followed hard after him.

⁶Et le jeune homme qui lui apportait ces nouvelles répondit: Je me trouvais sur la montagne de Guilboa; et voici, Saül s'appuyait sur sa lance, et voici, les chars et les cavaliers étaient près de l'atteindre.

⁶ויאמר הנער המגיד לו נקרא נקריתי בהר הגלבע והנה שאול נשען על חניתו והנה הרכב ובעלי הפרשים הדבקהו׃

⁷And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

⁷S'étant retourné, il m'aperçut et m'appela. Je dis: Me voici!

⁷ויפן אחריו ויראני ויקרא אלי ואמר הנני׃

⁸And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

⁸Et il me dit: Qui es-tu? Je lui répondis: Je suis Amalécite.

⁸ויאמר לי מי אתה ויאמר אליו עמלקי אנכי׃

⁹And he said unto me, Stand, I pray thee, beside me, and slay me; for anguish hath taken hold of me, because my life is yet whole in me.

⁹Et il dit: Approche donc, et donne-moi la mort; car je suis pris de vertige, quoique encore plein de vie.

⁹ויאמר אלי עמד נא עלי ומתתני כי אחזני השבץ כי כל עוד נפשי בי׃

¹⁰So I stood beside him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

¹⁰Je m'approchai de lui, et je lui donnai la mort, sachant bien qu'il ne survivrait pas à sa défaite. J'ai enlevé le diadème qui était sur sa tête et le bracelet qu'il avait au bras, et je les apporte ici à mon seigneur.

¹⁰ואעמד עליו ואמתתהו כי ידעתי כי לא יחיה אחרי נפלו ואקח הנזר אשר על ראשו ואצעדה אשר על זרעו ואביאם אל אדני הנה׃

¹¹Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

¹¹David saisit ses vêtements et les déchira, et tous les hommes qui étaient auprès de lui firent de même.

¹¹ויחזק דוד בבגדו ויקרעם וגם כל האנשים אשר אתו׃

¹²and they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

¹²Ils furent dans le deuil, pleurèrent et jeûnèrent jusqu'au soir, à cause de Saül, de Jonathan, son fils, du peuple de l'Eternel, et de la maison d'Israël, parce qu'ils étaient tombés par l'épée.

¹²ויספדו ויבכו ויצמו עד הערב על שאול ועל יהונתן בנו ועל עם יהוה ועל בית ישראל כי נפלו בחרב׃

¹³And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.

¹³David dit au jeune homme qui lui avait apporté ces nouvelles: D'où es-tu? Et il répondit: Je suis le fils d'un étranger, d'un Amalécite.

¹³ויאמר דוד אל הנער המגיד לו אי מזה אתה ויאמר בן איש גר עמלקי אנכי׃

¹⁴And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy Jehovah's anointed?

¹⁴David lui dit: Comment n'as-tu pas craint de porter la main sur l'oint de l'Eternel et de lui donner la mort?

¹⁴ויאמר אליו דוד איך לא יראת לשלח ידך לשחת את משיח יהוה׃

¹⁵And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him, so that he died.

¹⁵Et David appela l'un de ses gens, et dit: Approche, et tue-le! Cet homme frappa l'Amalécite, qui mourut.

¹⁵ויקרא דוד לאחד מהנערים ויאמר גש פגע בו ויכהו וימת׃

¹⁶And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain Jehovah's anointed.

¹⁶Et David lui dit: Que ton sang retombe sur ta tête, car ta bouche a déposé contre toi, puisque tu as dit: J'ai donné la mort à l'oint de l'Eternel!

¹⁶ויאמר אליו דוד דמיך על ראשך כי פיך ענה בך לאמר אנכי מתתי את משיח יהוה׃

¹⁷And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son

¹⁷Voici le cantique funèbre que David composa sur Saül et sur Jonathan, son fils,

¹⁷ויקנן דוד את הקינה הזאת על שאול ועל יהונתן בנו׃

¹⁸(and he bade them teach the children of Judah [the song of] the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jashar):

¹⁸et qu'il ordonna d'enseigner aux enfants de Juda. C'est le cantique de l'arc: il est écrit dans le livre du Juste.

¹⁸ויאמר ללמד בני יהודה קשת הנה כתובה על ספר הישר׃

¹⁹Thy glory, O Israel, is slain upon thy high places! How are the mighty fallen!

¹⁹L'élite d'Israël a succombé sur tes collines! Comment des héros sont-ils tombés?

¹⁹הצבי ישראל על במותיך חלל איך נפלו גבורים׃

²⁰Tell it not in Gath, Publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

²⁰Ne l'annoncez point dans Gath, N'en publiez point la nouvelle dans les rues d'Askalon, De peur que les filles des Philistins ne se réjouissent, De peur que les filles des incirconcis ne triomphent.

²⁰אל תגידו בגת אל תבשרו בחוצת אשקלון פן תשמחנה בנות פלשתים פן תעלזנה בנות הערלים׃

²¹Ye mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, neither fields of offerings: For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.

²¹Montagnes de Guilboa! Qu'il n'y ait sur vous ni rosée ni pluie, Ni champs qui donnent des prémices pour les offrandes! Car là ont été jetés les boucliers des héros, Le bouclier de Saül; L'huile a cessé de les oindre.

²¹הרי בגלבע אל טל ואל מטר עליכם ושדי תרומת כי שם נגעל מגן גבורים מגן שאול בלי משיח בשמן׃

²²From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan turned not back, And the sword of Saul returned not empty.

²²Devant le sang des blessés, devant la graisse des plus vaillants, L'arc de Jonathan n'a jamais reculé, Et l'épée de Saül ne retournait point à vide.

²²מדם חללים מחלב גבורים קשת יהונתן לא נשוג אחור וחרב שאול לא תשוב ריקם׃

²³Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they were not divided: They were swifter than eagles, They were stronger than lions.

²³Saül et Jonathan, aimables et chéris pendant leur vie, N'ont point été séparés dans leur mort; Ils étaient plus légers que les aigles, Ils étaient plus forts que les lions.

²³שאול ויהונתן הנאהבים והנעימם בחייהם ובמותם לא נפרדו מנשרים קלו מאריות גברו׃

²⁴Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you in scarlet delicately, Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

²⁴Filles d'Israël! pleurez sur Saül, Qui vous revêtait magnifiquement de cramoisi, Qui mettait des ornements d'or sur vos habits.

²⁴בנות ישראל אל שאול בכינה המלבשכם שני עם עדנים המעלה עדי זהב על לבושכן׃

²⁵How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain upon thy high places.

²⁵Comment des héros sont-ils tombés au milieu du combat? Comment Jonathan a-t-il succombé sur tes collines?

²⁵איך נפלו גברים בתוך המלחמה יהונתן על במותיך חלל׃

²⁶I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: Very pleasant hast thou been unto me: Thy love to me was wonderful, Passing the love of women.

²⁶Je suis dans la douleur à cause de toi, Jonathan, mon frère! Tu faisais tout mon plaisir; Ton amour pour moi était admirable, Au-dessus de l'amour des femmes.

²⁶צר לי עליך אחי יהונתן נעמת לי מאד נפלאתה אהבתך לי מאהבת נשים׃

²⁷How are the mighty fallen, And the weapons of war perished!

²⁷Comment des héros sont-ils tombés? Comment leurs armes se sont-elles perdues?

²⁷איך נפלו גבורים ויאבדו כלי מלחמה׃
