¹The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.

²Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

²Bien-aimé, je souhaite que tu prospères à tous égards et sois en bonne santé, comme prospère l'état de ton âme.

²חביבי חפצי הוא כי ייטב לך בכל דבר ותחזק כאשר טוב לך בנפשך׃

³For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth.

³J'ai été fort réjoui, lorsque des frères sont arrivés et ont rendu témoignage de la vérité qui est en toi, de la manière dont tu marches dans la vérité.

³כי שמחתי למאד כאשר באו אחים ויעידו על אמתך אשר מתהלך באמת אתה׃

⁴Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

⁴Je n'ai pas de plus grande joie que d'apprendre que mes enfants marchent dans la vérité.

⁴אין לי שמחה גדולה מלשמע את אשר בני יתהלכו באמת׃

⁵Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal;

⁵Bien-aimé, tu agis fidèlement dans ce que tu fais pour les frères, et même pour des frères étrangers,

⁵חביבי באמונה כל מעשיך עם האחים ועם הארחים׃

⁶who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God:

⁶lesquels ont rendu témoignage de ta charité, en présence de l'Eglise. Tu feras bien de pourvoir à leur voyage d'une manière digne de Dieu.

⁶אשר העידו על אהבתך בפני הקהל ואף תיטיב לעשות בלותך אתם כאשר יאתה לפני אלהים׃

⁷because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.

⁷Car c'est pour le nom de Jésus-Christ qu'ils sont partis, sans rien recevoir des païens.

⁷כי בעבור שמו יצאו ולא לקחו מאומה מן הגוים׃

⁸We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.

⁸Nous devons donc accueillir de tels hommes, afin d'être ouvriers avec eux pour la vérité.

⁸על כן חיבים אנחנו לקבל אתם למען נהיה עזרים לאמת׃

⁹I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.

⁹J'ai écrit quelques mots à l'Eglise; mais Diotrèphe, qui aime à être le premier parmi eux, ne nous reçoit point.

⁹אני כתבתי אל הקהלה אך דיוטריפס המתאוה להיות עליהם לראש איננו מקבל אתנו׃

¹⁰Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth [them] out of the church.

¹⁰C'est pourquoi, si je vais vous voir, je rappellerai les actes qu'il commet, en tenant contre nous de méchants propos; non content de cela, il ne reçoit pas les frères, et ceux qui voudraient le faire, il les en empêche et les chasse de l'Eglise.

¹⁰על כן בבאי אזכיר את מעשיו אשר הוא עשה בספרו עלינו דברים רעים ולא דיו שלא יקבל את האחים כי גם ימנע את החפצים לקבל ויגרשם מתוך הקהלה׃

¹¹Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

¹¹Bien-aimé, n'imite pas le mal, mais le bien. Celui qui fait le bien est de Dieu; celui qui fait le mal n'a point vu Dieu.

¹¹חביבי אל תרדף הרעה כי אם הטוב העשה טוב הוא מאלהים והעשה רע לא ראה את האלהים׃

¹²Demetrius hath the witness of all [men], and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness: and thou knowest that our witness is true.

¹²Tous, et la vérité elle-même, rendent un bon témoignage à Démétrius; nous aussi, nous lui rendons témoignage, et tu sais que notre témoignage est vrai.

¹²על דימטריוס העידו הכל וגם האמת עצמה וגם אנחנו מעידים עליו וידעתם כי עדותנו היא נאמנה׃

¹³I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write [them] to thee with ink and pen:

¹³J'aurais beaucoup de choses à t'écrire, mais je ne veux pas le faire avec l'encre et la plume.

¹³הרבה לי לכתב ולא חפצתי לכתב אליך בדיו ובקנה׃

¹⁴but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face.

¹⁴J'espère te voir bientôt, et nous parlerons de bouche à bouche. Que la paix soit avec toi! Les amis te saluent. Salue les amis, chacun en particulier.

¹⁴אבל אקוה לראותך במהרה ופה אל פה נדבר׃ [ (III John 1:15) שלום לך הרעים שאלים לשלומך שאל לשלום הרעים לאיש איש בשמו׃ ]

¹⁵Peace [be] unto thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.
