¹And Paul, looking stedfastly on the council, said, Brethren, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day.

¹Paul, les regards fixés sur le sanhédrin, dit: Hommes frères, c'est en toute bonne conscience que je me suis conduit jusqu'à ce jour devant Dieu...

¹ויבט פולוס אל הסנהדרין ויאמר אנשים אחים בכל תמת לבבי התהלכתי לפני אלהים עד היום הזה׃

²And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

²Le souverain sacrificateur Ananias ordonna à ceux qui étaient près de lui de le frapper sur la bouche.

²ויצו חנניה הכהן הגדול את העמדים עליו להכותו על פיו׃

³Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: and sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

³Alors Paul lui dit: Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie! Tu es assis pour me juger selon la loi, et tu violes la loi en ordonnant qu'on me frappe!

³ויאמר אליו פולוס יככה אלהים הקיר המסיד האמנם ישב אתה לדין אתי כתורה ואתה מצוה להכותי שלא כתורה׃

⁴And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

⁴Ceux qui étaient près de lui dirent: Tu insultes le souverain sacrificateur de Dieu!

⁴ויאמרו העמדים שם את הכהן הגדול לאלהים תחרף׃

⁵And Paul said, I knew not, brethren, that he was high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of a ruler of thy people.

⁵Et Paul dit: Je ne savais pas, frères, que ce fût le souverain sacrificateur; car il est écrit: Tu ne parleras pas mal du chef de ton peuple.

⁵ויאמר פולוס אחי לא ידעתי אשר הוא הכהן הגדול כי כתוב נשיא בעמך לא תאר׃

⁶But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees: touching the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

⁶Paul, sachant qu'une partie de l'assemblée était composée de sadducéens et l'autre de pharisiens, s'écria dans le sanhédrin: Hommes frères, je suis pharisien, fils de pharisiens; c'est à cause de l'espérance et de la résurrection des morts que je suis mis en jugement.

⁶ופולוס ידע כי מקצתם צדוקים ומקצתם פרושים ויצעק בתוך הסנהדרין אנשים אחים פרוש בן פרוש אנכי ועל תקות המתים ותחיתם אני נדין׃

⁷And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees; and the assembly was divided.

⁷Quand il eut dit cela, il s'éleva une discussion entre les pharisiens et les sadducéens, et l'assemblée se divisa.

⁷ובדברו הדבר הזה היה ריב בין הצדוקים ובין הפרושים ויחלק ההמון׃

⁸For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both.

⁸Car les sadducéens disent qu'il n'y a point de résurrection, et qu'il n'existe ni ange ni esprit, tandis que les pharisiens affirment les deux choses.

⁸כי הצדוקים אמרים אין תחיה ואין מלאך ורוח והפרושים מודים בשניהם׃

⁹And there arose a great clamor: and some of the scribes of the Pharisees part stood up, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: and what if a spirit hath spoken to him, or an angel?

⁹Il y eut une grande clameur, et quelques scribes du parti des pharisiens, s'étant levés, engagèrent un vif débat, et dirent: Nous ne trouvons aucun mal en cet homme; peut-être un esprit ou un ange lui a-t-il parlé.

⁹ותהי המלה גדולה ויקומו הסופרים אשר מכת הפרושים ויתוכחו לאמר לא מצאנו דבר רע באיש הזה ואם רוח דבר אליו או מלאך אל נלחמה באלהים׃

¹⁰And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the castle.

¹⁰Comme la discorde allait croissant, le tribun craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par ces gens, fit descendre les soldats pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et le conduire à la forteresse.

¹⁰והריב הולך וחזק ושר האלף דאג פן ישסעו את פולוס ויצו את אנשי הצבא לרדת ולחטף אתו מתוכם ולהכיאו אל המצד׃

¹¹And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer: for as thou hast testified concerning me at Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

¹¹La nuit suivante, le Seigneur apparut à Paul, et dit: Prends courage; car, de même que tu as rendu témoignage de moi dans Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu rendes témoignage dans Rome.

¹¹ובלילה ההוא נצב עליו האדון ויאמר חזק פולוס כי כאשר העידות לי בירושלים כן העד תעיד ברומי׃

¹²And when it was day, the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

¹²Quand le jour fut venu, les Juifs formèrent un complot, et firent des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, en disant qu'ils s'abstiendraient de manger et de boire jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent tué Paul.

¹²ויהי לפנות הבקר ויתחברו היהודים ויאסרו אסר על נפשם לאמר כי לא יאכלו ולא ישתו עד אם יהרגו את פולוס׃

¹³And they were more than forty that made this conspiracy.

¹³Ceux qui formèrent ce complot étaient plus de quarante,

¹³ומספר הבאים באלה הזאת היה יותר מארבעים׃

¹⁴And they came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.

¹⁴et ils allèrent trouver les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens, auxquels ils dirent: Nous nous sommes engagés, avec des imprécations contre nous-mêmes, à ne rien manger jusqu'à ce que nous ayons tué Paul.

¹⁴ויגשו לא ראשי הכהנים ואל הזקנים לאמר אסר אסרנו על נפשנו לבלתי טעם מאומה עד אם הרגנו את פולוס׃

¹⁵Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly: and we, before he comes near, are ready to slay him.

¹⁵Vous donc, maintenant, adressez-vous avec le sanhédrin au tribun, pour qu'il l'amène devant vous, comme si vous vouliez examiner sa cause plus exactement; et nous, avant qu'il approche, nous sommes prêts à le tuer.

¹⁵ועתה הודיעו אתם והסנהדרין את שר האלף ויורידהו מחר אליכם כאלו תחפצו לדרש היטב את ענינו ואנחנו נכונים להמיתו בטרם יקרב אליכם׃

¹⁶But Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the castle and told Paul.

¹⁶Le fils de la soeur de Paul, ayant eu connaissance du guet-apens, alla dans la forteresse en informer Paul.

¹⁶וישמע בן אחות פולוס את ארבם וילך ויבא אל המצד ויגד לפולוס׃

¹⁷And Paul called unto him one of the centurions, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain; for he hath something to tell him.

¹⁷Paul appela l'un des centeniers, et dit: Mène ce jeune homme vers le tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui rapporter.

¹⁷ויקרא פולוס לאחד משרי המאות ויאמר אליו הולך את הבחור הזה אל שר האלף כי דבר לו להודיעו׃

¹⁸So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and saith, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and asked me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say to thee.

¹⁸Le centenier prit le jeune homme avec lui, le conduisit vers le tribun, et dit: Le prisonnier Paul m'a appelé, et il m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire.

¹⁸ויקחהו ויוליכהו אל שר האלף ויאמר פולוס האסיר קראני אליו ויבקש ממני להוליך אליך את הבחור הזה כי דבר לו להגיד לך׃

¹⁹And the chief captain took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, What is it that thou hast to tell me?

¹⁹Le tribun, prenant le jeune homme par la main, et se retirant à l'écart, lui demanda: Qu'as-tu à m'annoncer?

¹⁹ויאחז שר האלף בידו ויסר עמו לבדו וישאלהו מה הוא זה אשר לך להודיעני׃

²⁰And he said, The Jews have agreed to ask thee to bring down Paul tomorrow unto the council, as though thou wouldest inquire somewhat more exactly concerning him.

²⁰Il répondit: Les Juifs sont convenus de te prier d'amener Paul demain devant le sanhédrin, comme si tu devais t'enquérir de lui plus exactement.

²⁰ויאמר כי נועצו היהודים יחדו לבקש ממך כי מחר תוריד את פולוס לפני הסנהדרין והמה כאלו חפצים לדעת היטב את ענינו׃

²¹Do not thou therefore yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have bound themselves under a curse, neither to eat nor to drink till they have slain him: and now are they ready, looking for the promise from thee.

²¹Ne les écoute pas, car plus de quarante d'entre eux lui dressent un guet-apens, et se sont engagés, avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, à ne rien manger ni boire jusqu'à ce qu'ils l'aient tué; maintenant ils sont prêts, et n'attendent que ton consentement.

²¹ואתה אל תשמע להם כי ארבים לו מהם יותר מארבעים איש אשר אסרו אסר על נפשם לבלתי אכל ושתות בטרם יהרגוהו והמה עתה עמדים ומחכים להבטחתך׃

²²So the chief captain let the young man go, charging him, Tell no man that thou hast signified these things to me.

²²Le tribun renvoya le jeune homme, après lui avoir recommandé de ne parler à personne de ce rapport qu'il lui avait fait.

²²וישלח שר האלף את הבחור ויצוהו לבלתי אמר לאיש כי גלה לו את הדבר הזה׃

²³And he called unto him two of the centurions, and said, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night:

²³Ensuite il appela deux des centeniers, et dit: Tenez prêts, dès la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats, soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents archers, pour aller jusqu'à Césarée.

²³ויקרא לשני שרי מאות ויאמר החלצו מאתכם אנשי צבא מאתים ללכת לקסרין ופרשים שבעים ומשכי קשת מאתים מן השעה השלישית בלילה׃

²⁴and [he bade them] provide beasts, that they might set Paul thereon, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

²⁴Qu'il y ait aussi des montures pour Paul, afin qu'on le mène sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix.

²⁴ובהמות יכינו להרכיב את פולוס למען הביאו שלם אל פיליכס ההגמון׃

²⁵And he wrote a letter after this form:

²⁵Il écrivit une lettre ainsi conçue:

²⁵ויכתב אגרת וזה תכן דבריה׃

²⁶Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix, greeting.

²⁶Claude Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut!

²⁶קלודיוס לוסיאס אל פיליכס ההגמון האדיר שלום׃

²⁷This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be slain of them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.

²⁷Cet homme, dont les Juifs s'étaient saisis, allait être tué par eux, lorsque je survins avec des soldats et le leur enlevai, ayant appris qu'il était Romain.

²⁷את האיש הזה תפשו היהודים ויבקשו המיתו ואבא עם אנשי הצבא ואפלטהו מתוכם בשמעי כי רומי הוא׃

²⁸And desiring to know the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him down unto their council:

²⁸Voulant connaître le motif pour lequel ils l'accusaient, je l'amenai devant leur sanhédrin.

²⁸ובאשר חפצתי לדעת על מה שמנו אתו הורדתיו אל הסנהדרין שלהם׃

²⁹whom I found to be accused about questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

²⁹J'ai trouvé qu'il était accusé au sujet de questions relatives à leur loi, mais qu'il n'avait commis aucun crime qui mérite la mort ou la prison.

²⁹ואמצא כי שטנו אתו על דברי שאלות דתם ולא על דבר אשר יהיה עליו חיב מיתה או מוסרות׃

³⁰And when it was shown to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to thee forthwith, charging his accusers also to speak against him before thee.

³⁰Informé que les Juifs lui dressaient des embûches, je te l'ai aussitôt envoyé, en faisant savoir à ses accusateurs qu'ils eussent à s'adresser eux-mêmes à toi. Adieu.

³⁰ועתה הנה הגד לי שהיהודים מתנכלים באיש הזה ואשלחהו אליך מיד וגם את שטניו צויתי לבוא ולהגיש שטנתם לפניך ואתה שלום׃

³¹So the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.

³¹Les soldats, selon l'ordre qu'ils avaient reçu, prirent Paul, et le conduisirent pendant la nuit jusqu'à Antipatris.

³¹ויקחו אנשי הצבא את פולוס כאשר צוו ויביאהו לילה אל אנטפטריס׃

³²But on the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

³²Le lendemain, laissant les cavaliers poursuivre la route avec lui, ils retournèrent à la forteresse.

³²וממחרת הניחו את הפרשים ללכת אתו וישובו למצד׃

³³and they, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

³³Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur, et lui présentèrent Paul.

³³והמה באו אל קסרין ויתנו את האגרת בידי ההגמון ויעמידו לפניו גם את פולוס׃

³⁴And when he had read it, he asked of what province he was; and when he understood that he was of Cilicia,

³⁴Le gouverneur, après avoir lu la lettre, demanda de quelle province était Paul. Ayant appris qu'il était de la Cilicie:

³⁴ויהי כקרא ההגמון את האגרת וישאל מאי זה מדינה הוא ויהי כשמעו כי הוא מקיליקיא ויאמר׃

³⁵I will hear thee fully, said he, when thine accusers also are come: and he commanded him to be kept in Herod's palace.

³⁵Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront venus. Et il ordonna qu'on le gardât dans le prétoire d'Hérode.

³⁵אשמע את דבריך בבוא גם שטניך הנה ויצו לשמרו בבית המשפט אשר להורדוס׃
