¹In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

¹La troisième année du règne de Jojakim, roi de Juda, Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, marcha contre Jérusalem, et l'assiégea.

¹בשנת שלוש למלכות יהויקים מלך יהודה בא נבוכדנאצר מלך בבל ירושלם ויצר עליה׃

²And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.

²Le Seigneur livra entre ses mains Jojakim, roi de Juda, et une partie des ustensiles de la maison de Dieu. Nebucadnetsar emporta les ustensiles au pays de Schinear, dans la maison de son dieu, il les mit dans la maison du trésor de son dieu.

²ויתן אדני בידו את יהויקים מלך יהודה ומקצת כלי בית האלהים ויביאם ארץ שנער בית אלהיו ואת הכלים הביא בית אוצר אלהיו׃

³And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in [certain] of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;

³Le roi donna l'ordre à Aschpenaz, chef de ses eunuques, d'amener quelques-uns des enfants d'Israël de race royale ou de famille noble,

³ויאמר המלך לאשפנז רב סריסיו להביא מבני ישראל ומזרע המלוכה ומן הפרתמים׃

⁴youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and endued with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king's palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

⁴de jeunes garçons sans défaut corporel, beaux de figure, doués de sagesse, d'intelligence et d'instruction, capables de servir dans le palais du roi, et à qui l'on enseignerait les lettres et la langue des Chaldéens.

⁴ילדים אשר אין בהם כל מאום וטובי מראה ומשכילים בכל חכמה וידעי דעת ומביני מדע ואשר כח בהם לעמד בהיכל המלך וללמדם ספר ולשון כשדים׃

⁵And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king's dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end thereof they should stand before the king.

⁵Le roi leur assigna pour chaque jour une portion des mets de sa table et du vin dont il buvait, voulant les élever pendant trois années, au bout desquelles ils seraient au service du roi.

⁵וימן להם המלך דבר יום ביומו מפת בג המלך ומיין משתיו ולגדלם שנים שלוש ומקצתם יעמדו לפני המלך׃

⁶Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

⁶Il y avait parmi eux, d'entre les enfants de Juda, Daniel, Hanania, Mischaël et Azaria.

⁶ויהי בהם מבני יהודה דניאל חנניה מישאל ועזריה׃

⁷And the prince of the eunuchs gave names unto them: unto Daniel he gave [the name of] Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, [of] Shadrach; and to Mishael, [of] Meshach; and to Azariah, [of] Abed-nego.

⁷Le chef des eunuques leur donna des noms, à Daniel celui de Beltschatsar, à Hanania celui de Schadrac, à Mischaël celui de Méschac, et à Azaria celui d'Abed-Nego.

⁷וישם להם שר הסריסים שמות וישם לדניאל בלטשאצר ולחנניה שדרך ולמישאל מישך ולעזריה עבד נגו׃

⁸But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

⁸Daniel résolut de ne pas se souiller par les mets du roi et par le vin dont le roi buvait, et il pria le chef des eunuques de ne pas l'obliger à se souiller.

⁸וישם דניאל על לבו אשר לא יתגאל בפתבג המלך וביין משתיו ויבקש משר הסריסים אשר לא יתגאל׃

⁹Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

⁹Dieu fit trouver à Daniel faveur et grâce devant le chef des eunuques.

⁹ויתן האלהים את דניאל לחסד ולרחמים לפני שר הסריסים׃

¹⁰And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths that are of your own age? so would ye endanger my head with the king.

¹⁰Le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel: Je crains mon seigneur le roi, qui a fixé ce que vous devez manger et boire; car pourquoi verrait-il votre visage plus abattu que celui des jeunes gens de votre âge? Vous exposeriez ma tête auprès du roi.

¹⁰ויאמר שר הסריסים לדניאל ירא אני את אדני המלך אשר מנה את מאכלכם ואת משתיכם אשר למה יראה את פניכם זעפים מן הילדים אשר כגילכם וחיבתם את ראשי למלך׃

¹¹Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

¹¹Alors Daniel dit à l'intendant à qui le chef des eunuques avait remis la surveillance de Daniel, de Hanania, de Mischaël et d'Azaria:

¹¹ויאמר דניאל אל המלצר אשר מנה שר הסריסים על דניאל חנניה מישאל ועזריה׃

¹²Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

¹²Eprouve tes serviteurs pendant dix jours, et qu'on nous donne des légumes à manger et de l'eau à boire;

¹²נס נא את עבדיך ימים עשרה ויתנו לנו מן הזרעים ונאכלה ומים ונשתה׃

¹³Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king's dainties; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

¹³tu regarderas ensuite notre visage et celui des jeunes gens qui mangent les mets du roi, et tu agiras avec tes serviteurs d'après ce que tu auras vu.

¹³ויראו לפניך מראינו ומראה הילדים האכלים את פתבג המלך וכאשר תראה עשה עם עבדיך׃

¹⁴So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

¹⁴Il leur accorda ce qu'ils demandaient, et les éprouva pendant dix jours.

¹⁴וישמע להם לדבר הזה וינסם ימים עשרה׃

¹⁵And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths that did eat of the king's dainties.

¹⁵Au bout de dix jours, ils avaient meilleur visage et plus d'embonpoint que tous les jeunes gens qui mangeaient les mets du roi.

¹⁵ומקצת ימים עשרה נראה מראיהם טוב ובריאי בשר מן כל הילדים האכלים את פתבג המלך׃

¹⁶So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

¹⁶L'intendant emportait les mets et le vin qui leur étaient destinés, et il leur donnait des légumes.

¹⁶ויהי המלצר נשא את פתבגם ויין משתיהם ונתן להם זרענים׃

¹⁷Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

¹⁷Dieu accorda à ces quatre jeunes gens de la science, de l'intelligence dans toutes les lettres, et de la sagesse; et Daniel expliquait toutes les visions et tous les songes.

¹⁷והילדים האלה ארבעתם נתן להם האלהים מדע והשכל בכל ספר וחכמה ודניאל הבין בכל חזון וחלמות׃

¹⁸And at the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

¹⁸Au terme fixé par le roi pour qu'on les lui amenât, le chef des eunuques les présenta à Nebucadnetsar.

¹⁸ולמקצת הימים אשר אמר המלך להביאם ויביאם שר הסריסים לפני נבכדנצר׃

¹⁹And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

¹⁹Le roi s'entretint avec eux; et, parmi tous ces jeunes gens, il ne s'en trouva aucun comme Daniel, Hanania, Mischaël et Azaria. Ils furent donc admis au service du roi.

¹⁹וידבר אתם המלך ולא נמצא מכלם כדניאל חנניה מישאל ועזריה ויעמדו לפני המלך׃

²⁰And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm.

²⁰Sur tous les objets qui réclamaient de la sagesse et de l'intelligence, et sur lesquels le roi les interrogeait, il les trouvait dix fois supérieurs à tous les magiciens et astrologues qui étaient dans tout son royaume.

²⁰וכל דבר חכמת בינה אשר בקש מהם המלך וימצאם עשר ידות על כל החרטמים האשפים אשר בכל מלכותו׃

²¹And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

²¹Ainsi fut Daniel jusqu'à la première année du roi Cyrus.

²¹ויהי דניאל עד שנת אחת לכורש המלך׃
