¹And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams; and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.

¹La seconde année du règne de Nebucadnetsar, Nebucadnetsar eut des songes. Il avait l'esprit agité, et ne pouvait dormir.

¹ובשנת שתים למלכות נבכדנצר חלם נבכדנצר חלמות ותתפעם רוחו ושנתו נהיתה עליו׃

²Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the enchanters, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.

²Le roi fit appeler les magiciens, les astrologues, les enchanteurs et les Chaldéens, pour qu'ils lui disent ses songes. Ils vinrent, et se présentèrent devant le roi.

²ויאמר המלך לקרא לחרטמים ולאשפים ולמכשפים ולכשדים להגיד למלך חלמתיו ויבאו ויעמדו לפני המלך׃

³And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.

³Le roi leur dit: J'ai eu un songe; mon esprit est agité, et je voudrais connaître ce songe.

³ויאמר להם המלך חלום חלמתי ותפעם רוחי לדעת את החלום׃

⁴Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in the Syrian language, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.

⁴Les Chaldéens répondirent au roi en langue araméenne: O roi, vis éternellement! dis le songe à tes serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l'explication.

⁴וידברו הכשדים למלך ארמית מלכא לעלמין חיי אמר חלמא לעבדיך ופשרא נחוא׃

⁵The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye make not known unto me the dream and the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.

⁵Le roi reprit la parole et dit aux Chaldéens: La chose m'a échappé; si vous ne me faites connaître le songe et son explication, vous serez mis en pièces, et vos maisons seront réduites en un tas d'immondices.

⁵ענה מלכא ואמר לכשדיא מלתא מני אזדא הן לא תהודעונני חלמא ופשרה הדמין תתעבדון ובתיכון נולי יתשמון׃

⁶But if ye show the dream and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honor: therefore show me the dream and the interpretation thereof.

⁶Mais si vous me dites le songe et son explication, vous recevrez de moi des dons et des présents, et de grands honneurs. C'est pourquoi dites-moi le songe et son explication.

⁶והן חלמא ופשרה תהחון מתנן ונבזבה ויקר שגיא תקבלון מן קדמי להן חלמא ופשרה החוני׃

⁷They answered the second time and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.

⁷Ils répondirent pour la seconde fois: Que le roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l'explication.

⁷ענו תנינות ואמרין מלכא חלמא יאמר לעבדוהי ופשרה נהחוה׃

⁸The king answered and said, I know of a certainty that ye would gain time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.

⁸Le roi reprit la parole et dit: Je m'aperçois, en vérité, que vous voulez gagner du temps, parce que vous voyez que la chose m'a échappé.

⁸ענה מלכא ואמר מן יציב ידע אנה די עדנא אנתון זבנין כל קבל די חזיתון די אזדא מני מלתא׃

⁹But if ye make not known unto me the dream, there is but one law for you; for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can show me the interpretation thereof.

⁹Si donc vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe, la même sentence vous enveloppera tous; vous voulez vous préparer à me dire des mensonges et des faussetés, en attendant que les temps soient changés. C'est pourquoi dites-moi le songe, et je saurai si vous êtes capables de m'en donner l'explication.

⁹די הן חלמא לא תהודענני חדה היא דתכון ומלה כדבה ושחיתה הזמנתון למאמר קדמי עד די עדנא ישתנא להן חלמא אמרו לי ואנדע די פשרה תהחונני׃

¹⁰The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can show the king's matter, forasmuch as no king, lord, or ruler, hath asked such a thing of any magician, or enchanter, or Chaldean.

¹⁰Les Chaldéens répondirent au roi: Il n'est personne sur la terre qui puisse dire ce que demande le roi; aussi jamais roi, quelque grand et puissant qu'il ait été, n'a exigé une pareille chose d'aucun magicien, astrologue ou Chaldéen.

¹⁰ענו כשדיא קדם מלכא ואמרין לא איתי אנש על יבשתא די מלת מלכא יוכל להחויה כל קבל די כל מלך רב ושליט מלה כדנה לא שאל לכל חרטם ואשף וכשדי׃

¹¹And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is no other that can show it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.

¹¹Ce que le roi demande est difficile; il n'y a personne qui puisse le dire au roi, excepté les dieux, dont la demeure n'est pas parmi les hommes.

¹¹ומלתא די מלכה שאל יקירה ואחרן לא איתי די יחונה קדם מלכא להן אלהין די מדרהון עם בשרא לא איתוהי׃

¹²For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.

¹²Là-dessus le roi se mit en colère, et s'irrita violemment. Il ordonna qu'on fasse périr tous les sages de Babylone.

¹²כל קבל דנה מלכא בנס וקצף שגיא ואמר להובדה לכל חכימי בבל׃

¹³So the decree went forth, and the wise men were to be slain; and they sought Daniel and his companions to be slain.

¹³La sentence fut publiée, les sages étaient mis à mort, et l'on cherchait Daniel et ses compagnons pour les faire périr.

¹³ודתא נפקת וחכימיא מתקטלין ובעו דניאל וחברוהי להתקטלה׃

¹⁴Then Daniel returned answer with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, who was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon;

¹⁴Alors Daniel s'adressa d'une manière prudente et sensée à Arjoc, chef des gardes du roi, qui était sorti pour mettre à mort les sages de Babylone.

¹⁴באדין דניאל התיב עטא וטעם לאריוך רב טבחיא די מלכא די נפק לקטלה לחכימי בבל׃

¹⁵he answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Wherefore is the decree so urgent from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁵Il prit la parole et dit à Arjoc, commandant du roi: Pourquoi la sentence du roi est-elle si sévère? Arjoc exposa la chose à Daniel.

¹⁵ענה ואמר לאריוך שליטא די מלכא על מה דתא מהחצפה מן קדם מלכא אדין מלתא הודע אריוך לדניאל׃

¹⁶And Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would appoint him a time, and he would show the king the interpretation.

¹⁶Et Daniel se rendit vers le roi, et le pria de lui accorder du temps pour donner au roi l'explication.

¹⁶ודניאל על ובעה מן מלכא די זמן ינתן לה ופשרא להחויה למלכא׃

¹⁷Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:

¹⁷Ensuite Daniel alla dans sa maison, et il instruisit de cette affaire Hanania, Mischaël et Azaria, ses compagnons,

¹⁷אדין דניאל לביתה אזל ולחנניה מישאל ועזריה חברוהי מלתא הודע׃

¹⁸that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions should nor perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁸les engageant à implorer la miséricorde du Dieu des cieux, afin qu'on ne fît pas périr Daniel et ses compagnons avec le reste des sages de Babylone.

¹⁸ורחמין למבעא מן קדם אלה שמיא על רזה דנה די לא יהבדון דניאל וחברוהי עם שאר חכימי בבל׃

¹⁹Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

¹⁹Alors le secret fut révélé à Daniel dans une vision pendant la nuit. Et Daniel bénit le Dieu des cieux.

¹⁹אדין לדניאל בחזוא די ליליא רזה גלי אדין דניאל ברך לאלה שמיא׃

²⁰Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

²⁰Daniel prit la parole et dit: Béni soit le nom de Dieu, d'éternité en éternité! A lui appartiennent la sagesse et la force.

²⁰ענה דניאל ואמר להוא שמה די אלהא מברך מן עלמא ועד עלמא די חכמתא וגבורתא די לה היא׃

²¹And he changeth the times and the seasons; he removeth kings, and setteth up kings; he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding;

²¹C'est lui qui change les temps et les circonstances, qui renverse et qui établit les rois, qui donne la sagesse aux sages et la science à ceux qui ont de l'intelligence.

²¹והוא מהשנא עדניא וזמניא מהעדה מלכין ומהקים מלכין יהב חכמתא לחכימין ומנדעא לידעי בינה׃

²²he revealeth the deep and secret things; he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

²²Il révèle ce qui est profond et caché, il connaît ce qui est dans les ténèbres, et la lumière demeure avec lui.

²²הוא גלא עמיקתא ומסתרתא ידע מה בחשוכא ונהירא עמה שרא׃

²³I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast now made known unto me what we desired of thee; for thou hast made known unto us the king's matter.

²³Dieu de mes pères, je te glorifie et je te loue de ce que tu m'as donné la sagesse et la force, et de ce que tu m'as fait connaître ce que nous t'avons demandé, de ce que tu nous as révélé le secret du roi.

²³לך אלה אבהתי מהודא ומשבח אנה די חכמתא וגבורתא יהבת לי וכען הודעתני די בעינא מנך די מלת מלכא הודעתנא׃

²⁴Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said thus unto him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon; bring me in before the king, and I will show unto the king the interpretation.

²⁴Après cela, Daniel se rendit auprès d'Arjoc, à qui le roi avait ordonné de faire périr les sages de Babylone; il alla, et lui parla ainsi: Ne fais pas périr les sages de Babylone! Conduis-moi devant le roi, et je donnerai au roi l'explication.

²⁴כל קבל דנה דניאל על על אריוך די מני מלכא להובדה לחכימי בבל אזל וכן אמר לה לחכימי בבל אל תהובד העלני קדם מלכא ופשרא למלכא אחוא׃

²⁵Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the children of the captivity of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.

²⁵Arjoc conduisit promptement Daniel devant le roi, et lui parla ainsi: J'ai trouvé parmi les captifs de Juda un homme qui donnera l'explication au roi.

²⁵אדין אריוך בהתבהלה הנעל לדניאל קדם מלכא וכן אמר לה די השכחת גבר מן בני גלותא די יהוד די פשרא למלכא יהודע׃

²⁶The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?

²⁶Le roi prit la parole et dit à Daniel, qu'on nommait Beltschatsar: Es-tu capable de me faire connaître le songe que j'ai eu et son explication?

²⁶ענה מלכא ואמר לדניאל די שמה בלטשאצר האיתיך כהל להודעתני חלמא די חזית ופשרה׃

²⁷Daniel answered before the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded can neither wise men, enchanters, magicians, nor soothsayers, show unto the king;

²⁷Daniel répondit en présence du roi et dit: Ce que le roi demande est un secret que les sages, les astrologues, les magiciens et les devins, ne sont pas capables de découvrir au roi.

²⁷ענה דניאל קדם מלכא ואמר רזה די מלכא שאל לא חכימין אשפין חרטמין גזרין יכלין להחויה למלכא׃

²⁸but there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and he hath made known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these:

²⁸Mais il y a dans les cieux un Dieu qui révèle les secrets, et qui a fait connaître au roi Nebucadnetsar ce qui arrivera dans la suite des temps. Voici ton songe et les visions que tu as eues sur ta couche.

²⁸ברם איתי אלה בשמיא גלא רזין והודע למלכא נבוכדנצר מה די להוא באחרית יומיא חלמך וחזוי ראשך על משכבך דנה הוא׃

²⁹as for thee, O king, thy thoughts came [into thy mind] upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter; and he that revealeth secrets hath made known to thee what shall come to pass.

²⁹Sur ta couche, ô roi, il t'est monté des pensées touchant ce qui sera après ce temps-ci; et celui qui révèle les secrets t'a fait connaître ce qui arrivera.

²⁹אנתה מלכא רעיונך על משכבך סלקו מה די להוא אחרי דנה וגלא רזיא הודעך מה די להוא׃

³⁰But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but to the intent that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that thou mayest know the thoughts of thy heart.

³⁰Si ce secret m'a été révélé, ce n'est point qu'il y ait en moi une sagesse supérieure à celle de tous les vivants; mais c'est afin que l'explication soit donnée au roi, et que tu connaisses les pensées de ton coeur.

³⁰ואנה לא בחכמה די איתי בי מן כל חייא רזא דנה גלי לי להן על דברת די פשרא למלכא יהודעון ורעיוני לבבך תנדע׃

³¹Thou, O king, sawest, and, behold, a great image. This image, which was mighty, and whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the aspect thereof was terrible.

³¹O roi, tu regardais, et tu voyais une grande statue; cette statue était immense, et d'une splendeur extraordinaire; elle était debout devant toi, et son aspect était terrible.

³¹אנתה מלכא חזה הוית ואלו צלם חד שגיא צלמא דכן רב וזיוה יתיר קאם לקבלך ורוה דחיל׃

³²As for this image, its head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass,

³²La tête de cette statue était d'or pur; sa poitrine et ses bras étaient d'argent; son ventre et ses cuisses étaient d'airain;

³²הוא צלמא ראשה די דהב טב חדוהי ודרעוהי די כסף מעוהי וירכתה די נחש׃

³³its legs of iron, its feet part of iron, and part of clay.

³³ses jambes, de fer; ses pieds, en partie de fer et en partie d'argile.

³³שקוהי די פרזל רגלוהי מנהון די פרזל ומנהון די חסף׃

³⁴Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them in pieces.

³⁴Tu regardais, lorsqu'une pierre se détacha sans le secours d'aucune main, frappa les pieds de fer et d'argile de la statue, et les mit en pièces.

³⁴חזה הוית עד די התגזרת אבן די לא בידין ומחת לצלמא על רגלוהי די פרזלא וחספא והדקת המון׃

³⁵Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken in pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors; and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

³⁵Alors le fer, l'argile, l'airain, l'argent et l'or, furent brisés ensemble, et devinrent comme la balle qui s'échappe d'une aire en été; le vent les emporta, et nulle trace n'en fut retrouvée. Mais la pierre qui avait frappé la statue devint une grande montagne, et remplit toute la terre.

³⁵באדין דקו כחדה פרזלא חספא נחשא כספא ודהבא והוו כעור מן אדרי קיט ונשא המון רוחא וכל אתר לא השתכח להון ואבנא די מחת לצלמא הות לטור רב ומלת כל ארעא׃

³⁶This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.

³⁶Voilà le songe. Nous en donnerons l'explication devant le roi.

³⁶דנה חלמא ופשרה נאמר קדם מלכא׃

³⁷Thou, O king, art king of kings, unto whom the God of heaven hath given the kingdom, the power, and the strength, and the glory;

³⁷O roi, tu es le roi des rois, car le Dieu des cieux t'a donné l'empire, la puissance, la force et la gloire;

³⁷אנתה מלכא מלך מלכיא די אלה שמיא מלכותא חסנא ותקפא ויקרא יהב לך׃

³⁸and wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens hath he given into thy hand, and hath made thee to rule over them all: thou art the head of gold.

³⁸il a remis entre tes mains, en quelque lieu qu'ils habitent, les enfants des hommes, les bêtes des champs et les oiseaux du ciel, et il t'a fait dominer sur eux tous: c'est toi qui es la tête d'or.

³⁸ובכל די דארין בני אנשא חיות ברא ועוף שמיא יהב בידך והשלטך בכלהון אנתה הוא ראשה די דהבא׃

³⁹And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee; and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.

³⁹Après toi, il s'élèvera un autre royaume, moindre que le tien; puis un troisième royaume, qui sera d'airain, et qui dominera sur toute la terre.

³⁹ובתרך תקום מלכו אחרי ארעא מנך ומלכו תליתיא אחרי די נחשא די תשלט בכל ארעא׃

⁴⁰And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron, forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things; and as iron that crusheth all these, shall it break in pieces and crush.

⁴⁰Il y aura un quatrième royaume, fort comme du fer; de même que le fer brise et rompt tout, il brisera et rompra tout, comme le fer qui met tout en pièces.

⁴⁰ומלכו רביעיה תהוא תקיפה כפרזלא כל קבל די פרזלא מהדק וחשל כלא וכפרזלא די מרעע כל אלין תדק ותרע׃

⁴¹And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

⁴¹Et comme tu as vu les pieds et les orteils en partie d'argile de potier et en partie de fer, ce royaume sera divisé; mais il y aura en lui quelque chose de la force du fer, parce que tu as vu le fer mêlé avec l'argile.

⁴¹ודי חזיתה רגליא ואצבעתא מנהון חסף די פחר ומנהון פרזל מלכו פליגה תהוה ומן נצבתא די פרזלא להוא בה כל קבל די חזיתה פרזלא מערב בחסף טינא׃

⁴²And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

⁴²Et comme les doigts des pieds étaient en partie de fer et en partie d'argile, ce royaume sera en partie fort et en partie fragile.

⁴²ואצבעת רגליא מנהון פרזל ומנהון חסף מן קצת מלכותא תהוה תקיפה ומנה תהוה תבירה׃

⁴³And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron doth not mingle with clay.

⁴³Tu as vu le fer mêlé avec l'argile, parce qu'ils se mêleront par des alliances humaines; mais ils ne seront point unis l'un à l'autre, de même que le fer ne s'allie point avec l'argile.

⁴³די חזית פרזלא מערב בחסף טינא מתערבין להון בזרע אנשא ולא להון דבקין דנה עם דנה הא כדי פרזלא לא מתערב עם חספא׃

⁴⁴And in the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall the sovereignty thereof be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

⁴⁴Dans le temps de ces rois, le Dieu des cieux suscitera un royaume qui ne sera jamais détruit, et qui ne passera point sous la domination d'un autre peuple; il brisera et anéantira tous ces royaumes-là, et lui-même subsistera éternellement.

⁴⁴וביומיהון די מלכיא אנון יקים אלה שמיא מלכו די לעלמין לא תתחבל ומלכותה לעם אחרן לא תשתבק תדק ותסיף כל אלין מלכותא והיא תקום לעלמיא׃

⁴⁵Forasmuch as thou sawest that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

⁴⁵C'est ce qu'indique la pierre que tu as vue se détacher de la montagne sans le secours d'aucune main, et qui a brisé le fer, l'airain, l'argile, l'argent et l'or. Le grand Dieu a fait connaître au roi ce qui doit arriver après cela. Le songe est véritable, et son explication est certaine.

⁴⁵כל קבל די חזית די מטורא אתגזרת אבן די לא בידין והדקת פרזלא נחשא חספא כספא ודהבא אלה רב הודע למלכא מה די להוא אחרי דנה ויציב חלמא ומהימן פשרה׃

⁴⁶Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odors unto him.

⁴⁶Alors le roi Nebucadnetsar tomba sur sa face et se prosterna devant Daniel, et il ordonna qu'on lui offrît des sacrifices et des parfums.

⁴⁶באדין מלכא נבוכדנצר נפל על אנפוהי ולדניאל סגד ומנחה וניחחין אמר לנסכה לה׃

⁴⁷The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou hast been able to reveal this secret.

⁴⁷Le roi adressa la parole à Daniel et dit: En vérité, votre Dieu est le Dieu des dieux et le Seigneur des rois, et il révèle les secrets, puisque tu as pu découvrir ce secret.

⁴⁷ענה מלכא לדניאל ואמר מן קשט די אלהכון הוא אלה אלהין ומרא מלכין וגלה רזין די יכלת למגלא רזה דנה׃

⁴⁸Then the king made Daniel great, and gave him many great gifts, and made him to rule over the whole province of Babylon, and to be chief governor over all the wise men of Babylon.

⁴⁸Ensuite le roi éleva Daniel, et lui fit de nombreux et riches présents; il lui donna le commandement de toute la province de Babylone, et l'établit chef suprême de tous les sages de Babylone.

⁴⁸אדין מלכא לדניאל רבי ומתנן רברבן שגיאן יהב לה והשלטה על כל מדינת בבל ורב סגנין על כל חכימי בבל׃

⁴⁹And Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel was in the gate of the king.

⁴⁹Daniel pria le roi de remettre l'intendance de la province de Babylone à Schadrac, Méschac et Abed-Nego. Et Daniel était à la cour du roi.

⁴⁹ודניאל בעא מן מלכא ומני על עבידתא די מדינת בבל לשדרך מישך ועבד נגו ודניאל בתרע מלכא׃
