1These are the words which Moses spake unto all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah over against Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.
1Voici les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël, de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans le désert, dans la plaine, vis-à-vis de Suph, entre Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hatséroth et Di-Zahab.
1אלה הדברים אשר דבר משה אל כל ישראל בעבר הירדן במדבר בערבה מול סוף בין פארן ובין תפל ולבן וחצרת ודי זהב׃
2It is eleven days' [journey] from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.
2Il y a onze journées depuis Horeb, par le chemin de la montagne de Séir, jusqu'à Kadès-Barnéa.
2אחד עשר יום מחרב דרך הר שעיר עד קדש ברנע׃
3And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that Jehovah had given him in commandment unto them;
3Dans la quarantième année, au onzième mois, le premier du mois, Moïse parla aux enfants d'Israël selon tout ce que l'Eternel lui avait ordonné de leur dire.
3ויהי בארבעים שנה בעשתי עשר חדש באחד לחדש דבר משה אל בני ישראל ככל אשר צוה יהוה אתו אלהם׃
4after he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.
4C'était après qu'il eut battu Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Hesbon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui habitait à Aschtaroth et à Edréi.
4אחרי הכתו את סיחן מלך האמרי אשר יושב בחשבון ואת עוג מלך הבשן אשר יושב בעשתרת באדרעי׃
5Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,
5De l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse commença à expliquer cette loi, et dit:
5בעבר הירדן בארץ מואב הואיל משה באר את התורה הזאת לאמר׃
6Jehovah our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mountain:
6L'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous a parlé à Horeb, en disant: Vous avez assez demeuré dans cette montagne.
6יהוה אלהינו דבר אלינו בחרב לאמר רב לכם שבת בהר הזה׃
7turn you, and take your journey, and go to the hill-country of the Amorites, and unto all [the places] nigh thereunto, in the Arabah, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the sea-shore, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
7Tournez-vous, et partez; allez à la montagne des Amoréens et dans tout le voisinage, dans la plaine, sur la montagne, dans la vallée, dans le midi, sur la côte de la mer, au pays des Cananéens et au Liban, jusqu'au grand fleuve, au fleuve d'Euphrate.
7פנו וסעו לכם ובאו הר האמרי ואל כל שכניו בערבה בהר ובשפלה ובנגב ובחוף הים ארץ הכנעני והלבנון עד הנהר הגדל נהר פרת׃
8Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Jehovah sware unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.
8Voyez, j'ai mis le pays devant vous; allez, et prenez possession du pays que l'Eternel a juré à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, de donner à eux et à leur postérité après eux.
8ראה נתתי לפניכם את הארץ באו ורשו את הארץ אשר נשבע יהוה לאבתיכם לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב לתת להם ולזרעם אחריהם׃
9And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:
9Dans ce temps-là, je vous dis: Je ne puis pas, à moi seul, vous porter.
9ואמר אלכם בעת ההוא לאמר לא אוכל לבדי שאת אתכם׃
10Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
10L'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous a multipliés, et vous êtes aujourd'hui aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel.
10יהוה אלהיכם הרבה אתכם והנכם היום ככוכבי השמים לרב׃
11Jehovah, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!
11Que l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos pères, vous augmente mille fois autant, et qu'il vous bénisse comme il vous l'a promis!
11יהוה אלהי אבותכם יסף עליכם ככם אלף פעמים ויברך אתכם כאשר דבר לכם׃
12How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?
12Comment porterais-je, à moi seul, votre charge, votre fardeau et vos contestations?
12איכה אשא לבדי טרחכם ומשאכם וריבכם׃
13Take you wise men, and understanding, and known, according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.
13Prenez dans vos tribus des hommes sages, intelligents et connus, et je les mettrai à votre tête.
13הבו לכם אנשים חכמים ונבנים וידעים לשבטיכם ואשימם בראשיכם׃
14And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good [for us] to do.
14Vous me répondîtes, en disant: Ce que tu proposes de faire est une bonne chose.
14ותענו אתי ותאמרו טוב הדבר אשר דברת לעשות׃
15So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.
15Je pris alors les chefs de vos tribus, des hommes sages et connus, et je les mis à votre tête comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante, et chefs de dix, et comme ayant autorité dans vos tribus.
15ואקח את ראשי שבטיכם אנשים חכמים וידעים ואתן אתם ראשים עליכם שרי אלפים ושרי מאות ושרי חמשים ושרי עשרת ושטרים לשבטיכם׃
16And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear [the causes] between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the sojourner that is with him.
16Je donnai, dans le même temps, cet ordre à vos juges: Ecoutez vos frères, et jugez selon la justice les différends de chacun avec son frère ou avec l'étranger.
16ואצוה את שפטיכם בעת ההוא לאמר שמע בין אחיכם ושפטתם צדק בין איש ובין אחיו ובין גרו׃
17Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I will hear it.
17Vous n'aurez point égard à l'apparence des personnes dans vos jugements; vous écouterez le petit comme le grand; vous ne craindrez aucun homme, car c'est Dieu qui rend la justice. Et lorsque vous trouverez une cause trop difficile, vous la porterez devant moi, pour que je l'entende.
17לא תכירו פנים במשפט כקטן כגדל תשמעון לא תגורו מפני איש כי המשפט לאלהים הוא והדבר אשר יקשה מכם תקרבון אלי ושמעתיו׃
18And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.
18C'est ainsi que je vous prescrivis, dans ce temps-là, tout ce que vous aviez à faire.
18ואצוה אתכם בעת ההוא את כל הדברים אשר תעשון׃
19And we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which ye saw, by the way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
19Nous partîmes d'Horeb, et nous parcourûmes en entier ce grand et affreux désert que vous avez vu; nous prîmes le chemin de la montagne des Amoréens, comme l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous l'avait ordonné, et nous arrivâmes à Kadès-Barnéa.
19ונסע מחרב ונלך את כל המדבר הגדול והנורא ההוא אשר ראיתם דרך הר האמרי כאשר צוה יהוה אלהינו אתנו ונבא עד קדש ברנע׃
20And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the hill-country of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.
20Je vous dis: Vous êtes arrivés à la montagne des Amoréens, que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
20ואמר אלכם באתם עד הר האמרי אשר יהוה אלהינו נתן לנו׃
21Behold, Jehovah thy God hath set the land before thee: go up, take possession, as Jehovah, the God of thy fathers, hath spoken unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.
21Vois, l'Eternel, ton Dieu, met le pays devant toi; monte, prends-en possession, comme te l'a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu de tes pères; ne crains point, et ne t'effraie point.
21ראה נתן יהוה אלהיך לפניך את הארץ עלה רש כאשר דבר יהוה אלהי אבתיך לך אל תירא ואל תחת׃
22And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities unto which we shall come.
22Vous vous approchâtes tous de moi, et vous dîtes: Envoyons des hommes devant nous, pour explorer le pays, et pour nous faire un rapport sur le chemin par lequel nous y monterons et sur les villes où nous arriverons.
22ותקרבון אלי כלכם ותאמרו נשלחה אנשים לפנינו ויחפרו לנו את הארץ וישבו אתנו דבר את הדרך אשר נעלה בה ואת הערים אשר נבא אליהן׃
23And the thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for every tribe:
23Cet avis me parut bon; et je pris douze hommes parmi vous, un homme par tribu.
23וייטב בעיני הדבר ואקח מכם שנים עשר אנשים איש אחד לשבט׃
24and they turned and went up into the hill-country, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.
24Ils partirent, traversèrent la montagne, et arrivèrent jusqu'à la vallée d'Eschcol, qu'ils explorèrent.
24ויפנו ויעלו ההרה ויבאו עד נחל אשכל וירגלו אתה׃
25And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which Jehovah our God giveth unto us.
25Ils prirent dans leurs mains des fruits du pays, et nous les présentèrent; ils nous firent un rapport, et dirent: C'est un bon pays, que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
25ויקחו בידם מפרי הארץ ויורדו אלינו וישבו אתנו דבר ויאמרו טובה הארץ אשר יהוה אלהינו נתן לנו׃
26Yet ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah your God:
26Mais vous ne voulûtes point y monter, et vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Eternel, votre Dieu.
26ולא אביתם לעלת ותמרו את פי יהוה אלהיכם׃
27and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because Jehovah hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
27Vous murmurâtes dans vos tentes, et vous dîtes: C'est parce que l'Eternel nous hait, qu'il nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, afin de nous livrer entre les mains des Amoréens et de nous détruire.
27ותרגנו באהליכם ותאמרו בשנאת יהוה אתנו הוציאנו מארץ מצרים לתת אתנו ביד האמרי להשמידנו׃
28Whither are we going up? our brethren have made our heart to melt, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.
28Où monterions-nous? Nos frères nous ont fait perdre courage, en disant: C'est un peuple plus grand et de plus haute taille que nous; ce sont des villes grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel; nous y avons même vu des enfants d'Anak.
28אנה אנחנו עלים אחינו המסו את לבבנו לאמר עם גדול ורם ממנו ערים גדלת ובצורת בשמים וגם בני ענקים ראינו שם׃
29Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
29Je vous dis: Ne vous épouvantez pas, et n'ayez pas peur d'eux.
29ואמר אלכם לא תערצון ולא תיראון מהם׃
30Jehovah your God who goeth before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,
30L'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui marche devant vous, combattra lui-même pour vous, selon tout ce qu'il a fait pour vous sous vos yeux en Egypte,
30יהוה אלהיכם ההלך לפניכם הוא ילחם לכם ככל אשר עשה אתכם במצרים לעיניכם׃
31and in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that Jehovah thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came unto this place.
31puis au désert, où tu as vu que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'a porté comme un homme porte son fils, pendant toute la route que vous avez faite jusqu'à votre arrivée en ce lieu.
31ובמדבר אשר ראית אשר נשאך יהוה אלהיך כאשר ישא איש את בנו בכל הדרך אשר הלכתם עד באכם עד המקום הזה׃
32Yet in this thing ye did not believe Jehovah your God,
32Malgré cela, vous n'eûtes point confiance en l'Eternel, votre Dieu,
32ובדבר הזה אינכם מאמינם ביהוה אלהיכם׃
33who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by day.
33qui allait devant vous sur la route pour vous chercher un lieu de campement, la nuit dans un feu afin de vous montrer le chemin où vous deviez marcher, et le jour dans une nuée.
33ההלך לפניכם בדרך לתור לכם מקום לחנתכם באש לילה לראתכם בדרך אשר תלכו בה ובענן יומם׃
34And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
34L'Eternel entendit le bruit de vos paroles. Il s'irrita, et jura, en disant:
34וישמע יהוה את קול דבריכם ויקצף וישבע לאמר׃
35Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see the good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,
35Aucun des hommes de cette génération méchante ne verra le bon pays que j'ai juré de donner à vos pères,
35אם יראה איש באנשים האלה הדור הרע הזה את הארץ הטובה אשר נשבעתי לתת לאבתיכם׃
36save Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Jehovah.
36excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné; il le verra, lui, et je donnerai à lui et à ses enfants le pays sur lequel il a marché, parce qu'il a pleinement suivi la voie de l'Eternel.
36זולתי כלב בן יפנה הוא יראנה ולו אתן את הארץ אשר דרך בה ולבניו יען אשר מלא אחרי יהוה׃
37Also Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither:
37L'Eternel s'irrita aussi contre moi, à cause de vous, et il dit: Toi non plus, tu n'y entreras point.
37גם בי התאנף יהוה בגללכם לאמר גם אתה לא תבא שם׃
38Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage thou him; for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
38Josué, fils de Nun, ton serviteur, y entrera; fortifie-le, car c'est lui qui mettra Israël en possession de ce pays.
38יהושע בן נון העמד לפניך הוא יבא שמה אתו חזק כי הוא ינחלנה את ישראל׃
39Moreover your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, and your children, that this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
39Et vos petits enfants, dont vous avez dit: Ils deviendront une proie! et vos fils, qui ne connaissent aujourd'hui ni le bien ni le mal, ce sont eux qui y entreront, c'est à eux que je le donnerai, et ce sont eux qui le posséderont.
39וטפכם אשר אמרתם לבז יהיה ובניכם אשר לא ידעו היום טוב ורע המה יבאו שמה ולהם אתננה והם יירשוה׃
40But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.
40Mais vous, tournez-vous, et partez pour le désert, dans la direction de la mer Rouge.
40ואתם פנו לכם וסעו המדברה דרך ים סוף׃
41Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah, we will go up and fight, according to all that Jehovah our God commanded us. And ye girded on every man his weapons of war, and were forward to go up into the hill-country.
41Vous répondîtes, en me disant: Nous avons péché contre l'Eternel; nous monterons et nous combattrons, comme l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous l'a ordonné. Et vous ceignîtes chacun vos armes, et vous fîtes le projet téméraire de monter à la montagne.
41ותענו ותאמרו אלי חטאנו ליהוה אנחנו נעלה ונלחמנו ככל אשר צונו יהוה אלהינו ותחגרו איש את כלי מלחמתו ותהינו לעלת ההרה׃
42And Jehovah said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
42L'Eternel me dit: Dis-leur: Ne montez pas et ne combattez pas, car je ne suis pas au milieu de vous; ne vous faites pas battre par vos ennemis.
42ויאמר יהוה אלי אמר להם לא תעלו ולא תלחמו כי אינני בקרבכם ולא תנגפו לפני איביכם׃
43So I spake unto you, and ye hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of Jehovah, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country.
43Je vous parlai, mais vous n'écoutâtes point; vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Eternel, et vous montâtes audacieusement à la montagne.
43ואדבר אליכם ולא שמעתם ותמרו את פי יהוה ותזדו ותעלו ההרה׃
44And the Amorites, that dwelt in that hill-country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even unto Hormah.
44Alors les Amoréens, qui habitent cette montagne, sortirent à votre rencontre, et vous poursuivirent comme font les abeilles; ils vous battirent en Séir, jusqu'à Horma.
44ויצא האמרי הישב בהר ההוא לקראתכם וירדפו אתכם כאשר תעשינה הדברים ויכתו אתכם בשעיר עד חרמה׃
45And ye returned and wept before Jehovah; but Jehovah hearkened not to your voice, nor gave ear unto you.
45A votre retour, vous pleurâtes devant l'Eternel; mais l'Eternel n'écouta point votre voix, et ne vous prêta point l'oreille.
45ותשבו ותבכו לפני יהוה ולא שמע יהוה בקלכם ולא האזין אליכם׃
46So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode [there].
46Vous restâtes à Kadès, où le temps que vous y avez passé fut de longue durée.
46ותשבו בקדש ימים רבים כימים אשר ישבתם׃
