¹Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Jehovah spake unto me; and we compassed mount Seir many days.

¹Nous nous tournâmes, et nous partîmes pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme l'Eternel me l'avait ordonné; nous suivîmes longtemps les contours de la montagne de Séir.

¹ונפן ונסע המדברה דרך ים סוף כאשר דבר יהוה אלי ונסב את הר שעיר ימים רבים׃

²And Jehovah spake unto me, saying,

²L'Eternel me dit:

²ויאמר יהוה אלי לאמר׃

³Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

³Vous avez assez suivi les contours de cette montagne. Tournez-vous vers le nord.

³רב לכם סב את ההר הזה פנו לכם צפנה׃

⁴And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore;

⁴Donne cet ordre au peuple: Vous allez passer à la frontière de vos frères, les enfants d'Esaü, qui habitent en Séir. Ils vous craindront; mais soyez bien sur vos gardes.

⁴ואת העם צו לאמר אתם עברים בגבול אחיכם בני עשו הישבים בשעיר וייראו מכם ונשמרתם מאד׃

⁵contend not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

⁵Ne les attaquez pas; car je ne vous donnerai dans leur pays pas même de quoi poser la plante du pied: j'ai donné la montagne de Séir en propriété à Esaü.

⁵אל תתגרו בם כי לא אתן לכם מארצם עד מדרך כף רגל כי ירשה לעשו נתתי את הר שעיר׃

⁶Ye shall purchase food of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

⁶Vous achèterez d'eux à prix d'argent la nourriture que vous mangerez, et vous achèterez d'eux à prix d'argent même l'eau que vous boirez.

⁶אכל תשברו מאתם בכסף ואכלתם וגם מים תכרו מאתם בכסף ושתיתם׃

⁷For Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand; he hath known thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years Jehovah thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

⁷Car l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'a béni dans tout le travail de tes mains, il a connu ta marche dans ce grand désert. Voilà quarante années que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, est avec toi: tu n'as manqué de rien.

⁷כי יהוה אלהיך ברכך בכל מעשה ידך ידע לכתך את המדבר הגדל הזה זה ארבעים שנה יהוה אלהיך עמך לא חסרת דבר׃

⁸So we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

⁸Nous passâmes à distance de nos frères, les enfants d'Esaü, qui habitent en Séir, et à distance du chemin de la plaine, d'Elath et d'Etsjon-Guéber, puis nous nous tournâmes, et nous prîmes la direction du désert de Moab.

⁸ונעבר מאת אחינו בני עשו הישבים בשעיר מדרך הערבה מאילת ומעצין גבר ונפן ונעבר דרך מדבר מואב׃

⁹And Jehovah said unto me, Vex not Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee of his land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.

⁹L'Eternel me dit: N'attaque pas Moab, et ne t'engage pas dans un combat avec lui; car je ne te donnerai rien à posséder dans son pays: c'est aux enfants de Lot que j'ai donné Ar en propriété.

⁹ויאמר יהוה אלי אל תצר את מואב ואל תתגר בם מלחמה כי לא אתן לך מארצו ירשה כי לבני לוט נתתי את ער ירשה׃

¹⁰(The Emim dwelt therein aforetime, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim:

¹⁰Les Emim y habitaient auparavant; c'était un peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakim.

¹⁰האמים לפנים ישבו בה עם גדול ורב ורם כענקים׃

¹¹these also are accounted Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.

¹¹Ils passaient aussi pour être des Rephaïm, de même que les Anakim; mais les Moabites les appelaient Emim.

¹¹רפאים יחשבו אף הם כענקים והמאבים יקראו להם אמים׃

¹²The Horites also dwelt in Seir aforetime, but the children of Esau succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which Jehovah gave unto them.)

¹²Séir était habité autrefois par les Horiens; les enfants d'Esaü les chassèrent, les détruisirent devant eux, et s'établirent à leur place, comme l'a fait Israël dans le pays qu'il possède et que l'Eternel lui a donné.

¹²ובשעיר ישבו החרים לפנים ובני עשו יירשום וישמידום מפניהם וישבו תחתם כאשר עשה ישראל לארץ ירשתו אשר נתן יהוה להם׃

¹³Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.

¹³Maintenant levez-vous, et passez le torrent de Zéred. Nous passâmes le torrent de Zéred.

¹³עתה קמו ועברו לכם את נחל זרד ונעבר את נחל זרד׃

¹⁴And the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah sware unto them.

¹⁴Le temps que durèrent nos marches de Kadès-Barnéa au passage du torrent de Zéred fut de trente-huit ans, jusqu'à ce que toute la génération des hommes de guerre eût disparu du milieu du camp, comme l'Eternel le leur avait juré.

¹⁴והימים אשר הלכנו מקדש ברנע עד אשר עברנו את נחל זרד שלשים ושמנה שנה עד תם כל הדור אנשי המלחמה מקרב המחנה כאשר נשבע יהוה להם׃

¹⁵Moreover the hand of Jehovah was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed.

¹⁵La main de l'Eternel fut aussi sur eux pour les détruire du milieu du camp, jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent disparu.

¹⁵וגם יד יהוה היתה בם להמם מקרב המחנה עד תמם׃

¹⁶So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,

¹⁶Lorsque tous les hommes de guerre eurent disparu par la mort du milieu du peuple,

¹⁶ויהי כאשר תמו כל אנשי המלחמה למות מקרב העם׃

¹⁷that Jehovah spake unto me, saying,

¹⁷l'Eternel me parla, et dit:

¹⁷וידבר יהוה אלי לאמר׃

¹⁸Thou art this day to pass over Ar, the border of Moab:

¹⁸Tu passeras aujourd'hui la frontière de Moab, à Ar,

¹⁸אתה עבר היום את גבול מואב את ער׃

¹⁹and when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, vex them not, nor contend with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

¹⁹et tu approcheras des enfants d'Ammon. Ne les attaque pas, et ne t'engage pas dans un combat avec eux; car je ne te donnerai rien à posséder dans le pays des enfants d'Ammon: c'est aux enfants de Lot que je l'ai donné en propriété.

¹⁹וקרבת מול בני עמון אל תצרם ואל תתגר בם כי לא אתן מארץ בני עמון לך ירשה כי לבני לוט נתתיה ירשה׃

²⁰(That also is accounted a land of Rephaim: Rephaim dwelt therein aforetime; but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,

²⁰Ce pays passait aussi pour un pays de Rephaïm; des Rephaïm y habitaient auparavant, et les Ammonites les appelaient Zamzummim:

²⁰ארץ רפאים תחשב אף הוא רפאים ישבו בה לפנים והעמנים יקראו להם זמזמים׃

²¹a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Jehovah destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead;

²¹c'était un peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakim. L'Eternel les détruisit devant les Ammonites, qui les chassèrent et s'établirent à leur place.

²¹עם גדול ורב ורם כענקים וישמידם יהוה מפניהם ויירשם וישבו תחתם׃

²²as he did for the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

²²C'est ainsi que fit l'Eternel pour les enfants d'Esaü qui habitent en Séir, quand il détruisit les Horiens devant eux; ils les chassèrent et s'établirent à leur place, jusqu'à ce jour.

²²כאשר עשה לבני עשו הישבים בשעיר אשר השמיד את החרי מפניהם ויירשם וישבו תחתם עד היום הזה׃

²³and the Avvim, that dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, that came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

²³Les Avviens, qui habitaient dans des villages jusqu'à Gaza, furent détruits par les Caphtorim, sortis de Caphtor, qui s'établirent à leur place.

²³והעוים הישבים בחצרים עד עזה כפתרים היצאים מכפתור השמידם וישבו תחתם׃

²⁴Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon: behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

²⁴Levez-vous, partez, et passez le torrent de l'Arnon. Vois, je livre entre tes mains Sihon, roi de Hesbon, l'Amoréen et son pays. Commence la conquête, fais-lui la guerre!

²⁴קומו סעו ועברו את נחל ארנן ראה נתתי בידך את סיחן מלך חשבון האמרי ואת ארצו החל רש והתגר בו מלחמה׃

²⁵This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

²⁵Je vais répandre dès aujourd'hui la frayeur et la crainte de toi sur tous les peuples qui sont sous le ciel; et, au bruit de ta renommée, ils trembleront et seront saisis d'angoisse à cause de toi.

²⁵היום הזה אחל תת פחדך ויראתך על פני העמים תחת כל השמים אשר ישמעון שמעך ורגזו וחלו מפניך׃

²⁶And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

²⁶J'envoyai, du désert de Kedémoth, des messagers à Sihon, roi de Hesbon, avec des paroles de paix. Je lui fis dire:

²⁶ואשלח מלאכים ממדבר קדמות אל סיחון מלך חשבון דברי שלום לאמר׃

²⁷Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the highway, I will turn neither unto the right hand nor to the left.

²⁷Laisse-moi passer par ton pays; je suivrai la grande route, sans m'écarter ni à droite ni à gauche.

²⁷אעברה בארצך בדרך בדרך אלך לא אסור ימין ושמאול׃

²⁸Thou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only let me pass through on my feet,

²⁸Tu me vendras à prix d'argent la nourriture que je mangerai, et tu me donneras à prix d'argent l'eau que je boirai; je ne ferai que passer avec mes pieds.

²⁸אכל בכסף תשברני ואכלתי ומים בכסף תתן לי ושתיתי רק אעברה ברגלי׃

²⁹as the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, and the Moabites that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God giveth us.

²⁹C'est ce que m'ont accordé les enfants d'Esaü qui habitent en Séir, et les Moabites qui demeurent à Ar. Accorde-le aussi, jusqu'à ce que je passe le Jourdain pour entrer au pays que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.

²⁹כאשר עשו לי בני עשו הישבים בשעיר והמואבים הישבים בער עד אשר אעבר את הירדן אל הארץ אשר יהוה אלהינו נתן לנו׃

³⁰But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as at this day.

³⁰Mais Sihon, roi de Hesbon, ne voulut point nous laisser passer chez lui; car l'Eternel, ton Dieu, rendit son esprit inflexible et endurcit son coeur, afin de le livrer entre tes mains, comme tu le vois aujourd'hui.

³⁰ולא אבה סיחן מלך חשבון העברנו בו כי הקשה יהוה אלהיך את רוחו ואמץ את לבבו למען תתו בידך כיום הזה׃

³¹And Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

³¹L'Eternel me dit: Vois, je te livre dès maintenant Sihon et son pays.

³¹ויאמר יהוה אלי ראה החלתי תת לפניך את סיחן ואת ארצו החל רש לרשת את ארצו׃

³²Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Jahaz.

³²Sihon sortit à notre rencontre, avec tout son peuple, pour nous combattre à Jahats.

³²ויצא סיחן לקראתנו הוא וכל עמו למלחמה יהצה׃

³³And Jehovah our God delivered him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

³³L'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous le livra, et nous le battîmes, lui et ses fils, et tout son peuple.

³³ויתנהו יהוה אלהינו לפנינו ונך אתו ואת בנו ואת כל עמו׃

³⁴And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones; we left none remaining:

³⁴Nous prîmes alors toutes ses villes, et nous les dévouâmes par interdit, hommes, femmes et petits enfants, sans en laisser échapper un seul.

³⁴ונלכד את כל עריו בעת ההוא ונחרם את כל עיר מתם והנשים והטף לא השארנו שריד׃

³⁵only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken.

³⁵Seulement, nous pillâmes pour nous le bétail et le butin des villes que nous avions prises.

³⁵רק הבהמה בזזנו לנו ושלל הערים אשר לכדנו׃

³⁶From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and [from] the city that is in the valley, even unto Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; Jehovah our God delivered up all before us:

³⁶Depuis Aroër sur les bords du torrent de l'Arnon, et la ville qui est dans la vallée, jusqu'à Galaad, il n'y eut pas de ville trop forte pour nous: l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous livra tout.

³⁶מערער אשר על שפת נחל ארנן והעיר אשר בנחל ועד הגלעד לא היתה קריה אשר שגבה ממנו את הכל נתן יהוה אלהינו לפנינו׃

³⁷only to the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not near; all the side of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill-country, and wheresoever Jehovah our God forbade us.

³⁷Mais tu n'approchas point du pays des enfants d'Ammon, de tous les bords du torrent de Jabbok, des villes de la montagne, de tous les lieux que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, t'avait défendu d'attaquer.

³⁷רק אל ארץ בני עמון לא קרבת כל יד נחל יבק וערי ההר וכל אשר צוה יהוה אלהינו׃
