¹When thou goest forth to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, [and] a people more than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them; for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

¹Lorsque tu iras à la guerre contre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux et des chars, et un peuple plus nombreux que toi, tu ne les craindras point; car l'Eternel, ton Dieu, qui t'a fait monter du pays d'Egypte, est avec toi.

¹כי תצא למלחמה על איביך וראית סוס ורכב עם רב ממך לא תירא מהם כי יהוה אלהיך עמך המעלך מארץ מצרים׃

²And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

²A l'approche du combat, le sacrificateur s'avancera et parlera au peuple.

²והיה כקרבכם אל המלחמה ונגש הכהן ודבר אל העם׃

³and shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint; fear not, nor tremble, neither be ye affrighted at them;

³Il leur dira: Ecoute, Israël! Vous allez aujourd'hui livrer bataille à vos ennemis. Que votre coeur ne se trouble point; soyez sans crainte, ne vous effrayez pas, ne vous épouvantez pas devant eux.

³ואמר אלהם שמע ישראל אתם קרבים היום למלחמה על איביכם אל ירך לבבכם אל תיראו ואל תחפזו ואל תערצו מפניהם׃

⁴for Jehovah your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

⁴Car l'Eternel, votre Dieu, marche avec vous, pour combattre vos ennemis, pour vous sauver.

⁴כי יהוה אלהיכם ההלך עמכם להלחם לכם עם איביכם להושיע אתכם׃

⁵And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

⁵Les officiers parleront ensuite au peuple et diront: Qui est-ce qui a bâti une maison neuve, et ne s'y est point encore établi? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille et qu'un autre ne s'y établisse.

⁵ודברו השטרים אל העם לאמר מי האיש אשר בנה בית חדש ולא חנכו ילך וישב לביתו פן ימות במלחמה ואיש אחר יחנכנו׃

⁶And what man is there that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not used the fruit thereof? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit thereof.

⁶Qui est-ce qui a planté une vigne, et n'en a point encore joui? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille et qu'un autre n'en jouisse.

⁶ומי האיש אשר נטע כרם ולא חללו ילך וישב לביתו פן ימות במלחמה ואיש אחר יחללנו׃

⁷And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

⁷Qui est-ce qui a fiancé une femme, et ne l'a point encore prise? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille et qu'un autre ne la prenne.

⁷ומי האיש אשר ארש אשה ולא לקחה ילך וישב לביתו פן ימות במלחמה ואיש אחר יקחנה׃

⁸And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart melt as his heart.

⁸Les officiers continueront à parler au peuple, et diront: Qui est-ce qui a peur et manque de courage? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne chez lui, afin que ses frères ne se découragent pas comme lui.

⁸ויספו השטרים לדבר אל העם ואמרו מי האיש הירא ורך הלבב ילך וישב לביתו ולא ימס את לבב אחיו כלבבו׃

⁹And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.

⁹Quand les officiers auront achevé de parler au peuple, ils placeront les chefs des troupes à la tête du peuple.

⁹והיה ככלת השטרים לדבר אל העם ופקדו שרי צבאות בראש העם׃

¹⁰When thou drawest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.

¹⁰Quand tu t'approcheras d'une ville pour l'attaquer, tu lui offriras la paix.

¹⁰כי תקרב אל עיר להלחם עליה וקראת אליה לשלום׃

¹¹And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that are found therein shall become tributary unto thee, and shall serve thee.

¹¹Si elle accepte la paix et t'ouvre ses portes, tout le peuple qui s'y trouvera te sera tributaire et asservi.

¹¹והיה אם שלום תענך ופתחה לך והיה כל העם הנמצא בה יהיו לך למס ועבדוך׃

¹²And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:

¹²Si elle n'accepte pas la paix avec toi et qu'elle veuille te faire la guerre, alors tu l'assiégeras.

¹²ואם לא תשלים עמך ועשתה עמך מלחמה וצרת עליה׃

¹³and when Jehovah thy God delivereth it into thy hand, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:

¹³Et après que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, l'aura livrée entre tes mains, tu en feras passer tous les mâles au fil de l'épée.

¹³ונתנה יהוה אלהיך בידך והכית את כל זכורה לפי חרב׃

¹⁴but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take for a prey unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which Jehovah thy God hath given thee.

¹⁴Mais tu prendras pour toi les femmes, les enfants, le bétail, tout ce qui sera dans la ville, tout son butin, et tu mangeras les dépouilles de tes ennemis que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'aura livrés.

¹⁴רק הנשים והטף והבהמה וכל אשר יהיה בעיר כל שללה תבז לך ואכלת את שלל איביך אשר נתן יהוה אלהיך לך׃

¹⁵Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.

¹⁵C'est ainsi que tu agiras à l'égard de toutes les villes qui sont très éloignées de toi, et qui ne font point partie des villes de ces nations-ci.

¹⁵כן תעשה לכל הערים הרחקת ממך מאד אשר לא מערי הגוים האלה הנה׃

¹⁶But of the cities of these peoples, that Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth;

¹⁶Mais dans les villes de ces peuples dont l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne le pays pour héritage, tu ne laisseras la vie à rien de ce qui respire.

¹⁶רק מערי העמים האלה אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך נחלה לא תחיה כל נשמה׃

¹⁷but thou shalt utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Jehovah thy God hath commanded thee;

¹⁷Car tu dévoueras ces peuples par interdit, les Héthiens, les Amoréens, les Cananéens, les Phéréziens, les Héviens, et les Jébusiens, comme l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te l'a ordonné,

¹⁷כי החרם תחרימם החתי והאמרי הכנעני והפרזי החוי והיבוסי כאשר צוך יהוה אלהיך׃

¹⁸that they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so would ye sin against Jehovah your God.

¹⁸afin qu'ils ne vous apprennent pas à imiter toutes les abominations qu'ils font pour leurs dieux, et que vous ne péchiez point contre l'Eternel, votre Dieu.

¹⁸למען אשר לא ילמדו אתכם לעשות ככל תועבתם אשר עשו לאלהיהם וחטאתם ליהוה אלהיכם׃

¹⁹When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding an axe against them; for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee?

¹⁹Si tu fais un long siège pour t'emparer d'une ville avec laquelle tu es en guerre, tu ne détruiras point les arbres en y portant la hache, tu t'en nourriras et tu ne les abattras point; car l'arbre des champs est-il un homme pour être assiégé par toi?

¹⁹כי תצור אל עיר ימים רבים להלחם עליה לתפשה לא תשחית את עצה לנדח עליו גרזן כי ממנו תאכל ואתו לא תכרת כי האדם עץ השדה לבא מפניך במצור׃

²⁰Only the trees of which thou knowest that they are not trees for food, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall.

²⁰Mais tu pourras détruire et abattre les arbres que tu sauras ne pas être des arbres servant à la nourriture, et en construire des retranchements contre la ville qui te fait la guerre, jusqu'à ce qu'elle succombe.

²⁰רק עץ אשר תדע כי לא עץ מאכל הוא אתו תשחית וכרת ובנית מצור על העיר אשר הוא עשה עמך מלחמה עד רדתה׃
