¹When Jehovah thy God shall cut off the nations, whose land Jehovah thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;

¹Lorsque l'Eternel, ton Dieu, aura exterminé les nations dont l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne le pays, lorsque tu les auras chassées et que tu habiteras dans leurs villes et dans leurs maisons,

¹כי יכרית יהוה אלהיך את הגוים אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך את ארצם וירשתם וישבת בעריהם ובבתיהם׃

²thou shalt set apart three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess it.

²tu sépareras trois villes au milieu du pays dont l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne la possession.

²שלוש ערים תבדיל לך בתוך ארצך אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך לרשתה׃

³Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and divide the borders of thy land, which Jehovah thy God causeth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee thither.

³Tu établiras des routes, et tu diviseras en trois parties le territoire du pays que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, va te donner en héritage. Il en sera ainsi afin que tout meurtrier puisse s'enfuir dans ces villes.

³תכין לך הדרך ושלשת את גבול ארצך אשר ינחילך יהוה אלהיך והיה לנוס שמה כל רצח׃

⁴And this is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee thither and live: whoso killeth his neighbor unawares, and hated him not in time past;

⁴Cette loi s'appliquera au meurtrier qui s'enfuira là pour sauver sa vie, lorsqu'il aura involontairement tué son prochain, sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi.

⁴וזה דבר הרצח אשר ינוס שמה וחי אשר יכה את רעהו בבלי דעת והוא לא שנא לו מתמל שלשם׃

⁵as when a man goeth into the forest with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbor, so that he dieth; he shall flee unto one of these cities and live:

⁵Un homme, par exemple, va couper du bois dans la forêt avec un autre homme; la hache en main, il s'élance pour abattre un arbre; le fer échappe du manche, atteint le compagnon de cet homme, et lui donne la mort. Alors il s'enfuira dans l'une de ces villes pour sauver sa vie,

⁵ואשר יבא את רעהו ביער לחטב עצים ונדחה ידו בגרזן לכרת העץ ונשל הברזל מן העץ ומצא את רעהו ומת הוא ינוס אל אחת הערים האלה וחי׃

⁶lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and smite him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

⁶de peur que le vengeur du sang, échauffé par la colère et poursuivant le meurtrier, ne finisse par l'atteindre s'il y avait à faire beaucoup de chemin, et ne frappe mortellement celui qui ne mérite pas la mort, puisqu'il n'était point auparavant l'ennemi de son prochain.

⁶פן ירדף גאל הדם אחרי הרצח כי יחם לבבו והשיגו כי ירבה הדרך והכהו נפש ולו אין משפט מות כי לא שנא הוא לו מתמול שלשום׃

⁷Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt set apart three cities for thee.

⁷C'est pourquoi je te donne cet ordre: Tu sépareras trois villes.

⁷על כן אנכי מצוך לאמר שלש ערים תבדיל לך׃

⁸And if Jehovah thy God enlarge thy border, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;

⁸Lorsque l'Eternel, ton Dieu, aura élargi tes frontières, comme il l'a juré à tes pères, et qu'il t'aura donné tout le pays qu'il a promis à tes pères de te donner, -

⁸ואם ירחיב יהוה אלהיך את גבלך כאשר נשבע לאבתיך ונתן לך את כל הארץ אשר דבר לתת לאבתיך׃

⁹if thou shalt keep all this commandment to do it, which I command thee this day, to love Jehovah thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, besides these three:

⁹pourvu que tu observes et mettes en pratique tous ces commandements que je te prescris aujourd'hui, en sorte que tu aimes l'Eternel, ton Dieu, et que tu marches toujours dans ses voies, -tu ajouteras encore trois villes à ces trois-là,

⁹כי תשמר את כל המצוה הזאת לעשתה אשר אנכי מצוך היום לאהבה את יהוה אלהיך וללכת בדרכיו כל הימים ויספת לך עוד שלש ערים על השלש האלה׃

¹⁰that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

¹⁰afin que le sang innocent ne soit pas répandu au milieu du pays que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne pour héritage, et que tu ne sois pas coupable de meurtre.

¹⁰ולא ישפך דם נקי בקרב ארצך אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך נחלה והיה עליך דמים׃

¹¹But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally so that he dieth, and he flee into one of these cities;

¹¹Mais si un homme s'enfuit dans une de ces villes, après avoir dressé des embûches à son prochain par inimitié contre lui, après l'avoir attaqué et frappé de manière à causer sa mort,

¹¹וכי יהיה איש שנא לרעהו וארב לו וקם עליו והכהו נפש ומת ונס אל אחת הערים האל׃

¹²then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

¹²les anciens de sa ville l'enverront saisir et le livreront entre les mains du vengeur du sang, afin qu'il meure.

¹²ושלחו זקני עירו ולקחו אתו משם ונתנו אתו ביד גאל הדם ומת׃

¹³Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

¹³Tu ne jetteras pas sur lui un regard de pitié, tu feras disparaître d'Israël le sang innocent, et tu seras heureux.

¹³לא תחוס עינך עליו ובערת דם הנקי מישראל וטוב לך׃

¹⁴Thou shalt not remove thy neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess it.

¹⁴Tu ne reculeras point les bornes de ton prochain, posées par tes ancêtres, dans l'héritage que tu auras au pays dont l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne la possession.

¹⁴לא תסיג גבול רעך אשר גבלו ראשנים בנחלתך אשר תנחל בארץ אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך לרשתה׃

¹⁵One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established.

¹⁵Un seul témoin ne suffira pas contre un homme pour constater un crime ou un péché, quel qu'il soit; un fait ne pourra s'établir que sur la déposition de deux ou de trois témoins.

¹⁵לא יקום עד אחד באיש לכל עון ולכל חטאת בכל חטא אשר יחטא על פי שני עדים או על פי שלשה עדים יקום דבר׃

¹⁶If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrong-doing,

¹⁶Lorsqu'un faux témoin s'élèvera contre quelqu'un pour l'accuser d'un crime,

¹⁶כי יקום עד חמס באיש לענות בו סרה׃

¹⁷then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days;

¹⁷les deux hommes en contestation comparaîtront devant l'Eternel, devant les sacrificateurs et les juges alors en fonctions.

¹⁷ועמדו שני האנשים אשר להם הריב לפני יהוה לפני הכהנים והשפטים אשר יהיו בימים ההם׃

¹⁸and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and have testified falsely against his brother;

¹⁸Les juges feront avec soin des recherches. Le témoin est-il un faux témoin, a-t-il fait contre son frère une fausse déposition,

¹⁸ודרשו השפטים היטב והנה עד שקר העד שקר ענה באחיו׃

¹⁹then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to do unto his brother: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

¹⁹alors vous le traiterez comme il avait dessein de traiter son frère. Tu ôteras ainsi le mal du milieu de toi.

¹⁹ועשיתם לו כאשר זמם לעשות לאחיו ובערת הרע מקרבך׃

²⁰And those that remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of thee.

²⁰Les autres entendront et craindront, et l'on ne commettra plus un acte aussi criminel au milieu de toi.

²⁰והנשארים ישמעו ויראו ולא יספו לעשות עוד כדבר הרע הזה בקרבך׃

²¹And thine eyes shall not pity; life [shall go] for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

²¹Tu ne jetteras aucun regard de pitié: oeil pour oeil, dent pour dent, main pour main, pied pour pied.

²¹ולא תחוס עינך נפש בנפש עין בעין שן בשן יד ביד רגל ברגל׃
