¹Now while Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there was gathered together unto him out of Israel a very great assembly of men and women and children; for the people wept very sore.

¹Pendant qu'Esdras, pleurant et prosterné devant la maison de Dieu, faisait cette prière et cette confession, il s'était rassemblé auprès de lui une foule très nombreuse de gens d'Israël, hommes, femmes et enfants, et le peuple répandait d'abondantes larmes.

¹וכהתפלל עזרא וכהתודתו בכה ומתנפל לפני בית האלהים נקבצו אליו מישראל קהל רב מאד אנשים ונשים וילדים כי בכו העם הרבה בכה׃

²And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have married foreign women of the peoples of the land: yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

²Alors Schecania, fils de Jehiel, d'entre les fils d'Elam, prit la parole et dit à Esdras: Nous avons péché contre notre Dieu, en nous alliant à des femmes étrangères qui appartiennent aux peuples du pays. Mais Israël ne reste pas pour cela sans espérance.

²ויען שכניה בן יחיאל מבני עולם ויאמר לעזרא אנחנו מעלנו באלהינו ונשב נשים נכריות מעמי הארץ ועתה יש מקוה לישראל על זאת׃

³Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

³Faisons maintenant une alliance avec notre Dieu pour le renvoi de toutes ces femmes et de leurs enfants, selon l'avis de mon seigneur et de ceux qui tremblent devant les commandements de notre Dieu. Et que l'on agisse d'après la loi.

³ועתה נכרת ברית לאלהינו להוציא כל נשים והנולד מהם בעצת אדני והחרדים במצות אלהינו וכתורה יעשה׃

⁴Arise; for the matter belongeth unto thee, and we are with thee: be of good courage, and do it.

⁴Lève-toi, car cette affaire te regarde. Nous serons avec toi. Prends courage et agis.

⁴קום כי עליך הדבר ואנחנו עמך חזק ועשה׃

⁵Then arose Ezra, and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. So they sware.

⁵Esdras se leva, et il fit jurer aux chefs des sacrificateurs, des Lévites, et de tout Israël, de faire ce qui venait d'être dit. Et ils le jurèrent.

⁵ויקם עזרא וישבע את שרי הכהנים הלוים וכל ישראל לעשות כדבר הזה וישבעו׃

⁶Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib: and [when] he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water; for he mourned because of the trespass of them of the captivity.

⁶Puis Esdras se retira de devant la maison de Dieu, et il alla dans la chambre de Jochanan, fils d'Eliaschib; quand il y fut entré, il ne mangea point de pain et il ne but point d'eau, parce qu'il était dans la désolation à cause du péché des fils de la captivité.

⁶ויקם עזרא מלפני בית האלהים וילך אל לשכת יהוחנן בן אלישיב וילך שם לחם לא אכל ומים לא שתה כי מתאבל על מעל הגולה׃

⁷And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

⁷On publia dans Juda et à Jérusalem que tous les fils de la captivité eussent à se réunir à Jérusalem,

⁷ויעבירו קול ביהודה וירושלם לכל בני הגולה להקבץ ירושלם׃

⁸and that whosoever came not within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the assembly of the captivity.

⁸et que, d'après l'avis des chefs et des anciens, quiconque ne s'y serait pas rendu dans trois jours aurait tous ses biens confisqués et serait lui-même exclu de l'assemblée des fils de la captivité.

⁸וכל אשר לא יבוא לשלשת הימים כעצת השרים והזקנים יחרם כל רכושו והוא יבדל מקהל הגולה׃

⁹Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth [day] of the month: and all the people sat in the broad place before the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.

⁹Tous les hommes de Juda et de Benjamin se rassemblèrent à Jérusalem dans les trois jours. C'était le vingtième jour du neuvième mois. Tout le peuple se tenait sur la place de la maison de Dieu, tremblant à cause de la circonstance et par suite de la pluie.

⁹ויקבצו כל אנשי יהודה ובנימן ירושלם לשלשת הימים הוא חדש התשיעי בעשרים בחדש וישבו כל העם ברחוב בית האלהים מרעידים על הדבר ומהגשמים׃

¹⁰And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have trespassed, and have married foreign women, to increase the guilt of Israel.

¹⁰Esdras, le sacrificateur, se leva et leur dit: Vous avez péché en vous alliant à des femmes étrangères, et vous avez rendu Israël encore plus coupable.

¹⁰ויקם עזרא הכהן ויאמר אלהם אתם מעלתם ותשיבו נשים נכריות להוסיף על אשמת ישראל׃

¹¹Now therefore make confession unto Jehovah, the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.

¹¹Confessez maintenant votre faute à l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos pères, et faites sa volonté! Séparez-vous des peuples du pays et des femmes étrangères.

¹¹ועתה תנו תודה ליהוה אלהי אבתיכם ועשו רצונו והבדלו מעמי הארץ ומן הנשים הנכריות׃

¹²Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said concerning us, so must we do.

¹²Toute l'assemblée répondit d'une voix haute: A nous de faire comme tu l'as dit!

¹²ויענו כל הקהל ויאמרו קול גדול כן כדבריך עלינו לעשות׃

¹³But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without: neither is this a work of one day or two; for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.

¹³Mais le peuple est nombreux, le temps est à la pluie, et il n'est pas possible de rester dehors; d'ailleurs, ce n'est pas l'oeuvre d'un jour ou deux, car il y en a beaucoup parmi nous qui ont péché dans cette affaire.

¹³אבל העם רב והעת גשמים ואין כח לעמוד בחוץ והמלאכה לא ליום אחד ולא לשנים כי הרבינו לפשע בדבר הזה׃

¹⁴Let now our princes be appointed for all the assembly, and let all them that are in our cities that have married foreign women come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God be turned from us, until this matter be despatched.

¹⁴Que nos chefs restent donc pour toute l'assemblée; et tous ceux qui dans nos villes se sont alliés à des femmes étrangères viendront à des époques fixes, avec les anciens et les juges de chaque ville, jusqu'à ce que l'ardente colère de notre Dieu se soit détournée de nous au sujet de cette affaire.

¹⁴יעמדו נא שרינו לכל הקהל וכל אשר בערינו ההשיב נשים נכריות יבא לעתים מזמנים ועמהם זקני עיר ועיר ושפטיה עד להשיב חרון אף אלהינו ממנו עד לדבר הזה׃

¹⁵Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this [matter]: and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

¹⁵Jonathan, fils d'Asaël, et Jachzia, fils de Thikva, appuyés par Meschullam et par le Lévite Schabthaï, furent les seuls à combattre cet avis,

¹⁵אך יונתן בן עשהאל ויחזיה בן תקוה עמדו על זאת ומשלם ושבתי הלוי עזרם׃

¹⁶And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, [with] certain heads of fathers' [houses], after their fathers' houses, and all of them by their names, were set apart; and they sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

¹⁶auquel se conformèrent les fils de la captivité. On choisit Esdras, le sacrificateur, et des chefs de famille selon leurs maisons paternelles, tous désignés par leurs noms; et ils siégèrent le premier jour du dixième mois pour s'occuper de la chose.

¹⁶ויעשו כן בני הגולה ויבדלו עזרא הכהן אנשים ראשי האבות לבית אבתם וכלם בשמות וישבו ביום אחד לחדש העשירי לדריוש הדבר׃

¹⁷And they made an end with all the men that had married foreign women by the first day of the first month.

¹⁷Le premier jour du premier mois, ils en finirent avec tous les hommes qui s'étaient alliés à des femmes étrangères.

¹⁷ויכלו בכל אנשים ההשיבו נשים נכריות עד יום אחד לחדש הראשון׃

¹⁸And among the sons of the priests there were found that had married foreign women: [namely], of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and his brethren, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

¹⁸Parmi les fils de sacrificateurs, il s'en trouva qui s'étaient alliés à des femmes étrangères: des fils de Josué, fils de Jotsadak, et de ses frères, Maaséja, Eliézer, Jarib et Guedalia,

¹⁸וימצא מבני הכהנים אשר השיבו נשים נכריות מבני ישוע בן יוצדק ואחיו מעשיה ואליעזר ויריב וגדליה׃

¹⁹And they gave their hand that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, [they offered] a ram of the flock for their guilt.

¹⁹qui s'engagèrent, en donnant la main, à renvoyer leurs femmes et à offrir un bélier en sacrifice de culpabilité;

¹⁹ויתנו ידם להוציא נשיהם ואשמים איל צאן על אשמתם׃

²⁰And of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.

²⁰des fils d'Immer, Hanani et Zebadia;

²⁰ומבני אמר חנני וזבדיה׃

²¹And of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

²¹des fils de Harim, Maaséja, Elie, Schemaeja, Jehiel et Ozias;

²¹ומבני חרם מעשיה ואליה ושמעיה ויחיאל ועזיה׃

²²And of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

²²des fils de Paschhur, Eljoénaï, Maaséja, Ismaël, Nethaneel, Jozabad et Eleasa.

²²ומבני פשחור אליועיני מעשיה ישמעאל נתנאל יוזבד ואלעשה׃

²³And of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

²³Parmi les Lévites: Jozabad, Schimeï, Kélaja ou Kelitha, Pethachja, Juda et Eliézer.

²³ומן הלוים יוזבד ושמעי וקליה הוא קליטא פתחיה יהודה ואליעזר׃

²⁴And of the singers: Eliashib. And of the porters: Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

²⁴Parmi les chantres: Eliaschib. Parmi les portiers: Schallum, Thélem et Uri.

²⁴ומן המשררים אלישיב ומן השערים שלם וטלם ואורי׃

²⁵And of Israel: Of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, and Izziah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

²⁵Parmi ceux d'Israël: des fils de Pareosch, Ramia, Jizzija, Malkija, Mijamin, Eléazar, Malkija et Benaja;

²⁵ומישראל מבני פרעש רמיה ויזיה ומלכיה ומימן ואלעזר ומלכיה ובניה׃

²⁶And of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.

²⁶des fils d'Elam, Matthania, Zacharie, Jehiel, Abdi, Jerémoth et Elie;

²⁶ומבני עילם מתניה זכריה ויחיאל ועבדי וירמות ואליה׃

²⁷And of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

²⁷des fils de Zatthu, Eljoénaï, Eliaschib, Matthania, Jerémoth, Zabad et Aziza;

²⁷ומבני זתוא אליועני אלישיב מתניה וירמות וזבד ועזיזא׃

²⁸And of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.

²⁸des fils de Bébaï, Jochanan, Hanania, Zabbaï et Athlaï;

²⁸ומבני בבי יהוחנן חנניה זבי עתלי׃

²⁹And of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, Jeremoth.

²⁹des fils de Bani, Meschullam, Malluc, Adaja, Jaschub, Scheal et Ramoth;

²⁹ומבני בני משלם מלוך ועדיה ישוב ושאל ירמות׃

³⁰And of the sons of Pahath-moab: Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

³⁰des fils de Pachath-Moab, Adna, Kelal, Benaja, Maaséja, Matthania, Betsaleel, Binnuï et Manassé;

³⁰ומבני פחת מואב עדנא וכלל בניה מעשיה מתניה בצלאל ובנוי ומנשה׃

³¹And [of] the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

³¹des fils de Harim, Eliézer, Jischija, Malkija, Schemaeja, Siméon,

³¹ובני חרם אליעזר ישיה מלכיה שמעיה שמעון׃

³²Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah.

³²Benjamin, Malluc et Schemaria;

³²בנימן מלוך שמריה׃

³³Of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei.

³³des fils de Haschum, Matthnaï, Matthattha, Zabad, Eliphéleth, Jerémaï, Manassé et Schimeï;

³³מבני חשם מתני מתתה זבד אליפלט ירמי מנשה שמעי׃

³⁴Of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, and Uel,

³⁴מבני בני מעדי עמרם ואואל׃

³⁵Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhi,

³⁵Benaja, Bédia, Keluhu,

³⁶Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,

³⁶Vania, Merémoth, Eliaschib,

³⁶וניה מרמות אלישיב׃

⁴¹עזראל ושלמיהו שמריה׃

⁴²Shallum, Amariah, Joseph.

⁴³Of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Iddo, and Joel, Benaiah.

⁴³des fils de Nebo, Jeïel, Matthithia, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddaï, Joël et Benaja.

⁴³מבני נבו יעיאל מתתיה זבד זבינא ידו ויואל בניה׃

⁴⁴All these had taken foreign wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had children.

⁴⁴Tous ceux-là avaient pris des femmes étrangères, et plusieurs en avaient eu des enfants.

⁴⁴כל אלה נשאי נשים נכריות ויש מהם נשים וישימו בנים׃
