¹Now when these things were done, the princes drew near unto me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, [doing] according to their abominations, even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

¹Après que cela fut terminé, les chefs s'approchèrent de moi, en disant: Le peuple d'Israël, les sacrificateurs et les Lévites ne se sont point séparés des peuples de ces pays, et ils imitent leurs abominations, celles des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Phéréziens, des Jébusiens, des Ammonites, des Moabites, des Egyptiens et des Amoréens.

¹וככלות אלה נגשו אלי השרים לאמר לא נבדלו העם ישראל והכהנים והלוים מעמי הארצות כתועבתיהם לכנעני החתי הפרזי היבוסי העמני המאבי המצרי והאמרי׃

²For they have taken of their daughters for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the peoples of the lands: yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass.

²Car ils ont pris de leurs filles pour eux et pour leurs fils, et ont mêlé la race sainte avec les peuples de ces pays; et les chefs et les magistrats ont été les premiers à commettre ce péché.

²כי נשאו מבנתיהם להם ולבניהם והתערבו זרע הקדש בעמי הארצות ויד השרים והסגנים היתה במעל הזה ראשונה׃

³And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my robe, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

³Lorsque j'entendis cela, je déchirai mes vêtements et mon manteau, je m'arrachai les cheveux de la tête et les poils de la barbe, et je m'assis désolé.

³וכשמעי את הדבר הזה קרעתי את בגדי ומעילי ואמרטה משער ראשי וזקני ואשבה משומם׃

⁴Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the trespass of them of the captivity; and I sat confounded until the evening oblation.

⁴Auprès de moi s'assemblèrent tous ceux que faisaient trembler les paroles du Dieu d'Israël, à cause du péché des fils de la captivité; et moi, je restai assis et désolé, jusqu'à l'offrande du soir.

⁴ואלי יאספו כל חרד בדברי אלהי ישראל על מעל הגולה ואני ישב משומם עד למנחת הערב׃

⁵And at the evening oblation I arose up from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe rent; and I fell upon my knees, and spread out my hands unto Jehovah my God;

⁵Puis, au moment de l'offrande du soir, je me levai du sein de mon humiliation, avec mes vêtements et mon manteau déchirés, je tombai à genoux, j'étendis les mains vers l'Eternel, mon Dieu,

⁵ובמנחת הערב קמתי מתעניתי ובקרעי בגדי ומעילי ואכרעה על ברכי ואפרשה כפי אל יהוה אלהי׃

⁶and I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God; for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our guiltiness is grown up unto the heavens.

⁶et je dis: Mon Dieu, je suis dans la confusion, et j'ai honte, ô mon Dieu, de lever ma face vers toi; car nos iniquités se sont multipliées par-dessus nos têtes, et nos fautes ont atteint jusqu'aux cieux.

⁶ואמרה אלהי בשתי ונכלמתי להרים אלהי פני אליך כי עונתינו רבו למעלה ראש ואשמתנו גדלה עד לשמים׃

⁷Since the days of our fathers we have been exceeding guilty unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to plunder, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

⁷Depuis les jours de nos pères nous avons été grandement coupables jusqu'à ce jour, et c'est à cause de nos iniquités que nous avons été livrés, nous, nos rois et nos sacrificateurs, aux mains des rois étrangers, à l'épée, à la captivité, au pillage, et à la honte qui couvre aujourd'hui notre visage.

⁷מימי אבתינו אנחנו באשמה גדלה עד היום הזה ובעונתינו נתנו אנחנו מלכינו כהנינו ביד מלכי הארצות בחרב בשבי ובבזה ובבשת פנים כהיום הזה׃

⁸And now for a little moment grace hath been showed from Jehovah our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

⁸Et cependant l'Eternel, notre Dieu, vient de nous faire grâce en nous laissant quelques réchappés et en nous accordant un abri dans son saint lieu, afin d'éclaircir nos yeux et de nous donner un peu de vie au milieu de notre servitude.

⁸ועתה כמעט רגע היתה תחנה מאת יהוה אלהינו להשאיר לנו פליטה ולתת לנו יתד במקום קדשו להאיר עינינו אלהינו ולתתנו מחיה מעט בעבדתנו׃

⁹For we are bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended lovingkindness unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the ruins thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

⁹Car nous sommes esclaves, mais Dieu ne nous a pas abandonnés dans notre servitude. Il nous a rendus les objets de la bienveillance des rois de Perse, pour nous conserver la vie afin que nous puissions bâtir la maison de notre Dieu et en relever les ruines, et pour nous donner une retraite en Juda et à Jérusalem.

⁹כי עבדים אנחנו ובעבדתנו לא עזבנו אלהינו ויט עלינו חסד לפני מלכי פרס לתת לנו מחיה לרומם את בית אלהינו ולהעמיד את חרבתיו ולתת לנו גדר ביהודה ובירושלם׃

¹⁰And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,

¹⁰Maintenant, que dirons-nous après cela, ô notre Dieu? Car nous avons abandonné tes commandements,

¹⁰ועתה מה נאמר אלהינו אחרי זאת כי עזבנו מצותיך׃

¹¹which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness:

¹¹que tu nous avais prescrits par tes serviteurs les prophètes, en disant: Le pays dans lequel vous entrez pour le posséder est un pays souillé par les impuretés des peuples de ces contrées, par les abominations dont ils l'ont rempli d'un bout à l'autre avec leurs impuretés;

¹¹אשר צוית ביד עבדיך הנביאים לאמר הארץ אשר אתם באים לרשתה ארץ נדה היא בנדת עמי הארצות בתועבתיהם אשר מלאוה מפה אל פה בטמאתם׃

¹²now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity for ever; that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.

¹²ne donnez donc point vos filles à leurs fils et ne prenez point leurs filles pour vos fils, et n'ayez jamais souci ni de leur prospérité ni de leur bien-être, et ainsi vous deviendrez forts, vous mangerez les meilleures productions du pays, et vous le laisserez pour toujours en héritage à vos fils.

¹²ועתה בנותיכם אל תתנו לבניהם ובנתיהם אל תשאו לבניכם ולא תדרשו שלמם וטובתם עד עולם למען תחזקו ואכלתם את טוב הארץ והורשתם לבניכם עד עולם׃

¹³And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great guilt, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such a remnant,

¹³Après tout ce qui nous est arrivé à cause des mauvaises actions et des grandes fautes que nous avons commises, quoique tu ne nous aies pas, ô notre Dieu, punis en proportion de nos iniquités, et maintenant que tu nous as conservé ces réchappés,

¹³ואחרי כל הבא עלינו במעשינו הרעים ובאשמתנו הגדלה כי אתה אלהינו חשכת למטה מעוננו ונתתה לנו פליטה כזאת׃

¹⁴shall we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the peoples that do these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?

¹⁴recommencerions-nous à violer tes commandements et à nous allier avec ces peuples abominables? Ta colère n'éclaterait-elle pas encore contre nous jusqu'à nous détruire, sans laisser ni reste ni réchappés?

¹⁴הנשוב להפר מצותיך ולהתחתן בעמי התעבות האלה הלוא תאנף בנו עד כלה לאין שארית ופליטה׃

¹⁵O Jehovah, the God of Israel, thou art righteous; for we are left a remnant that is escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our guiltiness; for none can stand before thee because of this.

¹⁵Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, tu es juste, car nous sommes aujourd'hui un reste de réchappés. Nous voici devant toi comme des coupables, et nous ne saurions ainsi subsister devant ta face.

¹⁵יהוה אלהי ישראל צדיק אתה כי נשארנו פליטה כהיום הזה הננו לפניך באשמתינו כי אין לעמוד לפניך על זאת׃
