¹Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple unto Jehovah, the God of Israel;

¹Les ennemis de Juda et de Benjamin apprirent que les fils de la captivité bâtissaient un temple à l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël.

¹וישמעו צרי יהודה ובנימן כי בני הגולה בונים היכל ליהוה אלהי ישראל׃

²then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers' [houses], and said unto them, Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as ye do; and we sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.

²Ils vinrent auprès de Zorobabel et des chefs de familles, et leur dirent: Nous bâtirons avec vous; car, comme vous, nous invoquons votre Dieu, et nous lui offrons des sacrifices depuis le temps d'Esar-Haddon, roi d'Assyrie, qui nous a fait monter ici.

²ויגשו אל זרבבל ואל ראשי האבות ויאמרו להם נבנה עמכם כי ככם נדרוש לאלהיכם ולא אנחנו זבחים מימי אסר חדן מלך אשור המעלה אתנו פה׃

³But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' [houses] of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us in building a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

³Mais Zorobabel, Josué, et les autres chefs des familles d'Israël, leur répondirent: Ce n'est pas à vous et à nous de bâtir la maison de notre Dieu; nous la bâtirons nous seuls à l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, comme nous l'a ordonné le roi Cyrus, roi de Perse.

³ויאמר להם זרבבל וישוע ושאר ראשי האבות לישראל לא לכם ולנו לבנות בית לאלהינו כי אנחנו יחד נבנה ליהוה אלהי ישראל כאשר צונו המלך כורש מלך פרס׃

⁴Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

⁴Alors les gens du pays découragèrent le peuple de Juda; ils l'intimidèrent pour l'empêcher de bâtir,

⁴ויהי עם הארץ מרפים ידי עם יהודה ומבלהים אותם לבנות׃

⁵and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

⁵et ils gagnèrent à prix d'argent des conseillers pour faire échouer son entreprise. Il en fut ainsi pendant toute la vie de Cyrus, roi de Perse, et jusqu'au règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

⁵וסכרים עליהם יועצים להפר עצתם כל ימי כורש מלך פרס ועד מלכות דריוש מלך פרס׃

⁶And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

⁶Sous le règne d'Assuérus, au commencement de son règne, ils écrivirent une accusation contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem.

⁶ובמלכות אחשורוש בתחלת מלכותו כתבו שטנה על ישבי יהודה וירושלם׃

⁷And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian [character], and set forth in the Syrian [tongue].

⁷Et du temps d'Artaxerxès, Bischlam, Mithredath, Thabeel, et le reste de leurs collègues, écrivirent à Artaxerxès, roi de Perse. La lettre fut transcrite en caractères araméens et traduite en araméen.

⁷ובימי ארתחששתא כתב בשלם מתרדת טבאל ושאר כנותו על ארתחששתא מלך פרס וכתב הנשתון כתוב ארמית ומתרגם ארמית׃

⁸Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

⁸Rehum, gouverneur, et Schimschaï, secrétaire écrivirent au roi Artaxerxès la lettre suivante concernant Jérusalem:

⁸רחום בעל טעם ושמשי ספרא כתבו אגרה חדה על ירושלם לארתחששתא מלכא כנמא׃

⁹then [wrote] Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

⁹Rehum, gouverneur, Schimschaï, secrétaire, et le reste de leurs collègues, ceux de Din, d'Arpharsathac, de Tharpel, d'Apharas, d'Erec, de Babylone, de Suse, de Déha, d'Elam,

⁹אדין רחום בעל טעם ושמשי ספרא ושאר כנותהון דיניא ואפרסתכיא טרפליא אפרסיא ארכוי בבליא שושנכיא דהוא עלמיא׃

¹⁰and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and in the rest [of the country] beyond the River, and so forth.

¹⁰et les autres peuples que le grand et illustre Osnappar a transportés et établis dans la ville de Samarie et autres lieux de ce côté du fleuve, etc.

¹⁰ושאר אמיא די הגלי אסנפר רבא ויקירא והותב המו בקריה די שמרין ושאר עבר נהרה וכענת׃

¹¹This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto Artaxerxes the king: Thy servants the men beyond the River, and so forth.

¹¹C'est ici la copie de la lettre qu'ils envoyèrent au roi Artaxerxès: Tes serviteurs, les gens de ce côté du fleuve, etc.

¹¹דנה פרשגן אגרתא די שלחו עלוהי על ארתחששתא מלכא עבדיך אנש עבר נהרה וכענת׃

¹²Be it known unto the king, that the Jews that came up from thee are come to us unto Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.

¹²Que le roi sache que les Juifs partis de chez toi et arrivés parmi nous à Jérusalem rebâtissent la ville rebelle et méchante, en relèvent les murs et en restaurent les fondements.

¹²ידיע להוא למלכא די יהודיא די סלקו מן לותך עלינא אתו לירושלם קריתא מרדתא ובאישתא בנין ושורי אשכללו ואשיא יחיטו׃

¹³Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful unto the kings.

¹³Que le roi sache donc que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, ils ne paieront ni tribut, ni impôt, ni droit de passage, et que le trésor royal en souffrira.

¹³כען ידיע להוא למלכא די הן קריתא דך תתבנא ושוריה ישתכללון מנדה בלו והלך לא ינתנון ואפתם מלכים תהנזק׃

¹⁴Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not meet for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

¹⁴Or, comme nous mangeons le sel du palais et qu'il ne nous paraît pas convenable de voir mépriser le roi, nous envoyons au roi ces informations.

¹⁴כען כל קבל די מלח היכלא מלחנא וערות מלכא לא אריך לנא למחזא על דנה שלחנא והודענא למלכא׃

¹⁵that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.

¹⁵Qu'on fasse des recherches dans le livre des mémoires de tes pères; et tu trouveras et verras dans le livre des mémoires que cette ville est une ville rebelle, funeste aux rois et aux provinces, et qu'on s'y est livré à la révolte dès les temps anciens. C'est pourquoi cette ville a été détruite.

¹⁵די יבקר בספר דכרניא די אבהתך ותהשכח בספר דכרניא ותנדע די קריתא דך קריא מרדא ומהנזקת מלכין ומדנן ואשתדור עבדין בגוה מן יומת עלמא על דנה קריתא דך החרבת׃

¹⁶We certify the king that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, by this means thou shalt have no portion beyond the River.

¹⁶Nous faisons savoir au roi que, si cette ville est rebâtie et si ses murs sont relevés, par cela même tu n'auras plus de possession de ce côté du fleuve.

¹⁶מהודעין אנחנה למלכא די הן קריתא דך תתבנא ושוריה ישתכללון לקבל דנה חלק בעבר נהרא לא איתי לך׃

¹⁷[Then] sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and in the rest [of the country] beyond the River: Peace, and so forth.

¹⁷Réponse envoyée par le roi à Rehum, gouverneur, à Schimschaï, secrétaire, et au reste de leurs collègues, demeurant à Samarie et autres lieux de l'autre côté du fleuve: Salut, etc.

¹⁷פתגמא שלח מלכא על רחום בעל טעם ושמשי ספרא ושאר כנותהון די יתבין בשמרין ושאר עבר נהרה שלם וכעת׃

¹⁸The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

¹⁸La lettre que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue exactement devant moi.

¹⁸נשתונא די שלחתון עלינא מפרש קרי קדמי׃

¹⁹And I decreed, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

¹⁹J'ai donné ordre de faire des recherches; et l'on a trouvé que dès les temps anciens cette ville s'est soulevée contre les rois, et qu'on s'y est livré à la sédition et à la révolte.

¹⁹ומני שים טעם ובקרו והשכחו די קריתא דך מן יומת עלמא על מלכין מתנשאה ומרד ואשתדור מתעבד בה׃

²⁰There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all [the country] beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid unto them.

²⁰Il y eut à Jérusalem des rois puissants, maîtres de tout le pays de l'autre côté du fleuve, et auxquels on payait tribut, impôt, et droit de passage.

²⁰ומלכין תקיפין הוו על ירושלם ושליטין בכל עבר נהרה ומדה בלו והלך מתיהב להון׃

²¹Make ye now a decree to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until a decree shall be made by me.

²¹En conséquence, ordonnez de faire cesser les travaux de ces gens, afin que cette ville ne se rebâtisse point avant une autorisation de ma part.

²¹כען שימו טעם לבטלא גבריא אלך וקריתא דך לא תתבנא עד מני טעמא יתשם׃

²²And take heed that ye be not slack herein: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

²²Gardez-vous de mettre en cela de la négligence, de peur que le mal n'augmente au préjudice des rois.

²²וזהירין הוו שלו למעבד על דנה למה ישגא חבלא להנזקת מלכין׃

²³Then when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

²³Aussitôt que la copie de la lettre du roi Artaxerxès eut été lue devant Rehum, Schimschaï, le secrétaire, et leurs collègues, ils allèrent en hâte à Jérusalem vers les Juifs, et firent cesser leurs travaux par violence et par force.

²³אדין מן די פרשגן נשתונא די ארתחששתא מלכא קרי קדם רחום ושמשי ספרא וכנותהון אזלו בבהילו לירושלם על יהודיא ובטלו המו באדרע וחיל׃

²⁴Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

²⁴Alors s'arrêta l'ouvrage de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem, et il fut interrompu jusqu'à la seconde année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

²⁴באדין בטלת עבידת בית אלהא די בירושלם והות בטלא עד שנת תרתין למלכות דריוש מלך פרס׃
