¹Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel [prophesied they] unto them.

¹Aggée, le prophète, et Zacharie, fils d'Iddo, le prophète, prophétisèrent aux Juifs qui étaient en Juda et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d'Israël.

¹והתנבי חגי נביאה וזכריה בר עדוא נביאיא על יהודיא די ביהוד ובירושלם בשם אלה ישראל עליהון׃

²Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.

²Alors Zorobabel, fils de Schealthiel, et Josué, fils de Jotsadak, se levèrent et commencèrent à bâtir la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem. Et avec eux étaient les prophètes de Dieu, qui les assistaient.

²באדין קמו זרבבל בר שאלתיאל וישוע בר יוצדק ושריו למבנא בית אלהא די בירושלם ועמהון נביאיא די אלהא מסעדין להון׃

³At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?

³Dans ce même temps, Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve, Schethar-Boznaï, et leurs collègues, vinrent auprès d'eux et leur parlèrent ainsi: Qui vous a donné l'autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs?

³בה זמנא אתא עליהון תתני פחת עבר נהרה ושתר בוזני וכנותהון וכן אמרין להם מן שם לכם טעם ביתא דנה לבנא ואשרנא דנה לשכללה׃

⁴Then we told them after this manner, what the names of the men were that were making this building.

⁴Ils leur dirent encore: Quels sont les noms des hommes qui construisent cet édifice?

⁴אדין כנמא אמרנא להם מן אנון שמהת גבריא די דנה בנינא בנין׃

⁵But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

⁵Mais l'oeil de Dieu veillait sur les anciens des Juifs. Et on laissa continuer les travaux pendant l'envoi d'un rapport à Darius et jusqu'à la réception d'une lettre sur cet objet.

⁵ועין אלההם הות על שבי יהודיא ולא בטלו המו עד טעמא לדריוש יהך ואדין יתיבון נשתונא על דנה׃

⁶The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent unto Darius the king;

⁶Copie de la lettre envoyée au roi Darius par Thathnaï, gouverneur de ce côté du fleuve. Schethar-Boznaï, et leurs collègues d'Apharsac, demeurant de ce côté du fleuve.

⁶פרשגן אגרתא די שלח תתני פחת עבר נהרה ושתר בוזני וכנותה אפרסכיא די בעבר נהרה על דריוש מלכא׃

⁷they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus: Unto Darius the king, all peace.

⁷Ils lui adressèrent un rapport ainsi conçu: Au roi Darius, salut!

⁷פתגמא שלחו עלוהי וכדנה כתיב בגוה לדריוש מלכא שלמא כלא׃

⁸Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands.

⁸Que le roi sache que nous sommes allés dans la province de Juda, à la maison du grand Dieu. Elle se construit en pierres de taille, et le bois se pose dans les murs; le travail marche rapidement et réussit entre leurs mains.

⁸ידיע להוא למלכא די אזלנא ליהוד מדינתא לבית אלהא רבא והוא מתבנא אבן גלל ואע מתשם בכתליא ועבידתא דך אספרנא מתעבדא ומצלח בידהם׃

⁹Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?

⁹Nous avons interrogé les anciens, et nous leur avons ainsi parlé: Qui vous a donné l'autorisation de bâtir cette maison et de relever ces murs?

⁹אדין שאלנא לשביא אלך כנמא אמרנא להם מן שם לכם טעם ביתא דנה למבניה ואשרנא דנה לשכללה׃

¹⁰We asked them their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them.

¹⁰Nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms pour te les faire connaître, et nous avons mis par écrit les noms des hommes qui sont à leur tête.

¹⁰ואף שמהתהם שאלנא להם להודעותך די נכתב שם גבריא די בראשיהם׃

¹¹And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished.

¹¹Voici la réponse qu'ils nous ont faite: Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu des cieux et de la terre, et nous rebâtissons la maison qui avait été construite il y a bien des années; un grand roi d'Israël l'avait bâtie et achevée.

¹¹וכנמא פתגמא התיבונא לממר אנחנא המו עבדוהי די אלה שמיא וארעא ובנין ביתא די הוא בנה מקדמת דנה שנין שגיאן ומלך לישראל רב בנהי ושכללה׃

¹²But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

¹²Mais après que nos pères eurent irrité le Dieu des cieux, il les livra entre les mains de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, le Chaldéen, qui détruisit cette maison et emmena le peuple captif à Babylone.

¹²להן מן די הרגזו אבהתנא לאלה שמיא יהב המו ביד נבוכדנצר מלך בבל כסדיא וביתה דנה סתרה ועמה הגלי לבבל׃

¹³But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.

¹³Toutefois, la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus donna l'ordre de rebâtir cette maison de Dieu.

¹³ברם בשנת חדה לכורש מלכא די בבל כורש מלכא שם טעם בית אלהא דנה לבנא׃

¹⁴And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

¹⁴Et même le roi Cyrus ôta du temple de Babylone les ustensiles d'or et d'argent de la maison de Dieu, que Nebucadnetsar avait enlevés du temple de Jérusalem et transportés dans le temple de Babylone, il les fit remettre au nommé Scheschbatsar, qu'il établit gouverneur,

¹⁴ואף מאניא די בית אלהא די דהבה וכספא די נבוכדנצר הנפק מן היכלא די בירושלם והיבל המו להיכלא די בבל הנפק המו כורש מלכא מן היכלא די בבל ויהיבו לששבצר שמה די פחה שמה׃

¹⁵and he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place.

¹⁵et il lui dit: Prends ces ustensiles, va les déposer dans le temple de Jérusalem, et que la maison de Dieu soit rebâtie sur le lieu où elle était.

¹⁵ואמר לה אלה מאניא שא אזל אחת המו בהיכלא די בירושלם ובית אלהא יתבנא על אתרה׃

¹⁶Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed.

¹⁶Ce Scheschbatsar est donc venu, et il a posé les fondements de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem; depuis lors jusqu'à présent elle se construit, et elle n'est pas achevée.

¹⁶אדין ששבצר דך אתא יהב אשיא די בית אלהא די בירושלם ומן אדין ועד כען מתבנא ולא שלם׃

¹⁷Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

¹⁷Maintenant, si le roi le trouve bon, que l'on fasse des recherches dans la maison des trésors du roi à Babylone, pour voir s'il y a eu de la part du roi Cyrus un ordre donné pour la construction de cette maison de Dieu à Jérusalem. Puis, que le roi nous transmette sa volonté sur cet objet.

¹⁷וכען הן על מלכא טב יתבקר בבית גנזיא די מלכא תמה די בבבל הן איתי די מן כורש מלכא שים טעם למבנא בית אלהא דך בירושלם ורעות מלכא על דנה ישלח עלינא׃
