¹Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

¹Nous donc aussi, puisque nous sommes environnés d'une si grande nuée de témoins, rejetons tout fardeau, et le péché qui nous enveloppe si facilement, et courons avec persévérance dans la carrière qui nous est ouverte,

¹לכן גם אנחנו אשר ענן עדים רב כזה סבב אתנו נשליכה ממנו כל טרח והחטא המקיף עלינו ונרוצה בתוחלת את המרוצה הערוכה לפנינו׃

²looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of [our] faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

²ayant les regards sur Jésus, le chef et le consommateur de la foi, qui, en vue de la joie qui lui était réservée, a souffert la croix, méprisé l'ignominie, et s'est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.

²ונביטה אל ישוע ראש האמונה ומשלימה אשר בעד השמחה השמורה לו סבל את הצלב ויבז החרפה וישב לימין כסא האלהים׃

³For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.

³Considérez, en effet, celui qui a supporté contre sa personne une telle opposition de la part des pécheurs, afin que vous ne vous lassiez point, l'âme découragée.

³התבוננו אליו אשר נשא כלמת חטאים גדולה כזאת למען לא תיעפו ולא תיגעו בנפשותיכם׃

⁴Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin:

⁴Vous n'avez pas encore résisté jusqu'au sang, en luttant contre le péché.

⁴עדין לא עמדתם עד לדם במלחמתכם עם החטא׃

⁵and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

⁵Et vous avez oublié l'exhortation qui vous est adressée comme à des fils: Mon fils, ne méprise pas le châtiment du Seigneur, Et ne perds pas courage lorsqu'il te reprend;

⁵ותשכחו דבר הנחומים המדבר אליכם כמו אל בנים לאמר מוסר יהוה בני אל תמאס ואל תקץ בתוכחתו׃

⁶For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

⁶Car le Seigneur châtie celui qu'il aime, Et il frappe de la verge tous ceux qu'il reconnaît pour ses fils.

⁶כי את אשר יאהב יהוה יוכיח יכאב את בן ירצה׃

⁷It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom [his] father chasteneth not?

⁷Supportez le châtiment: c'est comme des fils que Dieu vous traite; car quel est le fils qu'un père ne châtie pas?

⁷אם סבלים אתם מוסר דעו כי כאב עם בניו כן מתנהג אלהים עמכם כי איה הבן אשר אביו לא ייסרנו׃

⁸But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

⁸Mais si vous êtes exempts du châtiment auquel tous ont part, vous êtes donc des enfants illégitimes, et non des fils.

⁸אך אם תהיו באין מוסר אשר היה מנת כלם אז ממזרים אתם ולא בנים׃

⁹Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

⁹D'ailleurs, puisque nos pères selon la chair nous ont châtiés, et que nous les avons respectés, ne devons-nous pas à bien plus forte raison nous soumettre au Père des esprits, pour avoir la vie?

⁹ועוד אם אבות בשרנו היו מיסרים אתנו ונירא מהם אף כי נכנע לפני אבי הרוחות ונחיה׃

¹⁰For they indeed for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness.

¹⁰Nos pères nous châtiaient pour peu de jours, comme ils le trouvaient bon; mais Dieu nous châtie pour notre bien, afin que nous participions à sa sainteté.

¹⁰כי המה יסרונו כטוב בעיניהם לימים מעטים אבל זה להועיל למען יהיה לנו חלק בקדשתו׃

¹¹All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.

¹¹Il est vrai que tout châtiment semble d'abord un sujet de tristesse, et non de joie; mais il produit plus tard pour ceux qui ont été ainsi exercés un fruit paisible de justice.

¹¹וכל מוסר בעת עברו עלינו איננו שמחה בעינינו כי אם יגון אולם באחריתו יתן פרי שלום לצדקה למלמדים בו׃

¹²Wherefore lift up the hands that hang down, and the palsied knees;

¹²Fortifiez donc vos mains languissantes Et vos genoux affaiblis;

¹²על כן חזקו ידים רפות וברכים כשלות׃

¹³and make straight paths for your feet, that that which is lame be not turned out of the way, but rather be healed.

¹³et suivez avec vos pieds des voies droites, afin que ce qui est boiteux ne dévie pas, mais plutôt se raffermisse.

¹³ומעגל רגליכם פלסו למען לא תטה הצלעה מן הדרך כי אם תרפא׃

¹⁴Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:

¹⁴Recherchez la paix avec tous, et la sanctification, sans laquelle personne ne verra le Seigneur.

¹⁴רדפו את השלום עם כל אדם ואת הקדשה אשר בלעדיה לא יראה איש את האדון׃

¹⁵looking carefully lest [there be] any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble [you], and thereby the many be defiled;

¹⁵Veillez à ce que nul ne se prive de la grâce de Dieu; à ce qu'aucune racine d'amertume, poussant des rejetons, ne produise du trouble, et que plusieurs n'en soient infectés;

¹⁵והזהרו פן יש בכם איש מתאחר מחסד אלהים פן יוגיעכם שרש פרה לענה ויטמאו בו רבים׃

¹⁶lest [there be] any fornication, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his own birthright.

¹⁶ce qu'il n'y ait ni impudique, ni profane comme Esaü, qui pour un mets vendit son droit d'aînesse.

¹⁶פן ימצא בכם זנה או חלל כעשו אשר בנזיד אחד מכר את בכורתו׃

¹⁷For ye know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for a change of mind [in his father,] though he sought is diligently with tears.

¹⁷Vous savez que, plus tard, voulant obtenir la bénédiction, il fut rejeté, quoiqu'il la sollicitât avec larmes; car son repentir ne put avoir aucun effet.

¹⁷הלא ידעתם כי גם נמאס אחרי כן כאשר רצה לרשת את הברכה כי לא מצא מקום לתשובה אף בקש אותה בדמעות׃

¹⁸For ye are not come unto [a mount] that might be touched, and that burned with fire, and unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

¹⁸Vous ne vous êtes pas approchés d'une montagne qu'on pouvait toucher et qui était embrasée par le feu, ni de la nuée, ni des ténèbres, ni de la tempête,

¹⁸כי לא באתם אל הר נמשש ובער באש ולא אל ענן וערפל וסערה׃

¹⁹and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which [voice] they that heard entreated that no word more should be spoken unto them;

¹⁹ni du retentissement de la trompette, ni du bruit des paroles, tel que ceux qui l'entendirent demandèrent qu'il ne leur en fût adressé aucune de plus,

¹⁹ולא לקול שופר ולקול הדברים אשר שמעיו בקשו שלא יוסיף לדבר עמהם עוד׃

²⁰for they could not endure that which was enjoined, If even a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned;

²⁰car ils ne supportaient pas cette déclaration: Si même une bête touche la montagne, elle sera lapidée.

²⁰כי לא יכלו לשאת את אשר צוו ואם בהמה תגע בהר סקל תקסל או ירה תירה בחצים׃

²¹and so fearful was the appearance, [that] Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:

²¹Et ce spectacle était si terrible que Moïse dit: Je suis épouvanté et tout tremblant!

²¹והמראה היה נורא עד מאד ויאמר משה יגרתי וחרדתי׃

²²but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels,

²²Mais vous vous êtes approchés de la montagne de Sion, de la cité du Dieu vivant, la Jérusalem céleste, des myriades qui forment le choeur des anges,

²²כי אם באתם אל הר ציון ואל עיר אלהים חיים אל ירושלים שבשמים׃

²³to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

²³de l'assemblée des premiers-nés inscrits dans les cieux, du juge qui est le Dieu de tous, des esprits des justes parvenus à la perfection,

²³ואל עצרת רבבות המלאכים ועדת הבכורים הכתובים בשמים ואל אלהים שפט הכל ואל רוחות הצדיקים הנשלמים׃

²⁴and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than [that of] Abel.

²⁴de Jésus qui est le médiateur de la nouvelle alliance, et du sang de l'aspersion qui parle mieux que celui d'Abel.

²⁴ואל ישוע סרסר הברית החדשה ואל דם ההזאה המיטיב דבר מדם הבל׃

²⁵See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned [them] on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape] who turn away from him that [warneth] from heaven:

²⁵Gardez-vous de refuser d'entendre celui qui parle; car si ceux-là n'ont pas échappé qui refusèrent d'entendre celui qui publiait les oracles sur la terre, combien moins échapperons-nous, si nous nous détournons de celui qui parle du haut des cieux,

²⁵לכן ראו פן תמאנו לשמע אל המדבר כי הן לא נמלטו המאנים לשמע אל המדבר עמהם בארץ אף אנחנו אם נמאן לשמע בקול המדבר מן השמים׃

²⁶whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.

²⁶lui, dont la voix alors ébranla la terre, et qui maintenant a fait cette promesse: Une fois encore j'ébranlerai non seulement la terre, mais aussi le ciel.

²⁶אשר קולו הרעיש אז את הארץ ועתה זה הבטיח לאמר עוד אחת ואני מרעיש לא לבד את הארץ כי גם את השמים׃

²⁷And this [word], Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.

²⁷Ces mots: Une fois encore, indiquent le changement des choses ébranlées, comme étant faites pour un temps, afin que les choses inébranlables subsistent.

²⁷וזו עוד אחת שאמר משמיע חליפת הנרעשים אשר הם עשוים למען יעמד אשר איננו נרעש׃

²⁸Wherefore, receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us have grace, whereby we may offer service well-pleasing to God with reverence and awe:

²⁸C'est pourquoi, recevant un royaume inébranlable, montrons notre reconnaissance en rendant à Dieu un culte qui lui soit agréable, avec piété et avec crainte,

²⁸לכן אנחנו המקבלים מלכות אשר לא תמוט נבאה נא בתודה ונעבד בה את האלהים לרצון לו בצניעות וביראה׃

²⁹for our God is a consuming fire.

²⁹car notre Dieu est aussi un feu dévorant.

²⁹כי אלהינו אש אכלה הוא׃
