¹Be not many [of you] teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment.

¹Mes frères, qu'il n'y ait pas parmi vous un grand nombre de personnes qui se mettent à enseigner, car vous savez que nous serons jugés plus sévèrement.

¹אחי אל יהיו רבים מכם למורים באשר ידעתם כי בזאת נכביד עלינו את הדין׃

²For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

²Nous bronchons tous de plusieurs manières. Si quelqu'un ne bronche point en paroles, c'est un homme parfait, capable de tenir tout son corps en bride.

²כי כלנו מרבים להכשל ואשר לא יכשל בדבור הוא איש תמים וביכלתו לשום רסן גם לכל גופו׃

³Now if we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also.

³Si nous mettons le mors dans la bouche des chevaux pour qu'ils nous obéissent, nous dirigeons aussi leur corps tout entier.

³הנה בפי הסוסים נשים את הרסן למען אשר ישמעו לנו ונהגנו בו את כל גויתם׃

⁴Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth.

⁴Voici, même les navires, qui sont si grands et que poussent des vents impétueux, sont dirigés par un très petit gouvernail, au gré du pilote.

⁴והנה האניות אף כי גדלות הנה ורוחות קשות יהדפום ינהג אתן משוט קטן אל כל אשר יחפץ החבל כן גם הלשון אבר קטן היא וגדלות תדבר׃

⁵So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!

⁵De même, la langue est un petit membre, et elle se vante de grandes choses. Voici, comme un petit feu peut embraser une grande forêt!

⁵ראה מה גדול היער ואש קטנה תבעירנו גם הלשון אש היא עולם מלא עולה׃

⁶And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

⁶La langue aussi est un feu; c'est le monde de l'iniquité. La langue est placée parmi nos membres, souillant tout le corps, et enflammant le cours de la vie, étant elle-même enflammée par la géhenne.

⁶כן הלשון נצבת בין אברינו המגאלת את כל הגוף ומלהטת את גלגל הויתנו והיא להוטה באש גיהנם׃

⁷For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind.

⁷Toutes les espèces de bêtes et d'oiseaux, de reptiles et d'animaux marins, sont domptés et ont été domptés par la nature humaine;

⁷כי מין כל בהמה ועוף ורמש וחיות הים יכבש ונכבשים הם על ידי מין האדם׃

⁸But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison.

⁸mais la langue, aucun homme ne peut la dompter; c'est un mal qu'on ne peut réprimer; elle est pleine d'un venin mortel.

⁸אבל הלשון אין אדם יכל לכבשה אין מעצור לרעה הזאת וסם המות מלאה׃

⁹Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:

⁹Par elle nous bénissons le Seigneur notre Père, et par elle nous maudissons les hommes faits à l'image de Dieu.

⁹בה נברך את האלהים אבינו ובה נקלל את האנשים העשוים בצלם אלהים׃

¹⁰out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

¹⁰De la même bouche sortent la bénédiction et la malédiction. Il ne faut pas, mes frères, qu'il en soit ainsi.

¹⁰מפה אחד יצאת ברכה וקללה וכן לא יעשה אחי׃

¹¹Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet [water] and bitter?

¹¹La source fait-elle jaillir par la même ouverture l'eau douce et l'eau amère?

¹¹היביע המעין מתוקים ומרים ממוצא אחד׃

¹²Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt water yield sweet.

¹²Un figuier, mes frères, peut-il produire des olives, ou une vigne des figues? De l'eau salée ne peut pas non plus produire de l'eau douce.

¹²אחי היוכל עץ התאנה להוציא זיתים או התוכל הגפן להוציא תאנים כן גם מעין אחד לא יוכל נבע מים מלוחים ומתוקים׃

¹³Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.

¹³Lequel d'entre vous est sage et intelligent? Qu'il montre ses oeuvres par une bonne conduite avec la douceur de la sagesse.

¹³מי בכם חכם ונבון יראה בדרכו הטובה את מעשיו בענות החכמה׃

¹⁴But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.

¹⁴Mais si vous avez dans votre coeur un zèle amer et un esprit de dispute, ne vous glorifiez pas et ne mentez pas contre la vérité.

¹⁴ואם קנאה מרה ומריבה בלבבכם אל תתהללו ואל תשקרו באמת׃

¹⁵This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

¹⁵Cette sagesse n'est point celle qui vient d'en haut; mais elle est terrestre, charnelle, diabolique.

¹⁵אין זאת החכמה הירדת ממעל כי אם חכמת אדמה היא וחכמת היצר והשדים׃

¹⁶For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.

¹⁶Car là où il y a un zèle amer et un esprit de dispute, il y a du désordre et toutes sortes de mauvaises actions.

¹⁶כי במקום קנאה ומריבה שם מהומה וכל מעשה רע׃

¹⁷But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.

¹⁷La sagesse d'en haut est premièrement pure, ensuite pacifique, modérée, conciliante, pleine de miséricorde et de bons fruits, exempte de duplicité, d'hypocrisie.

¹⁷אבל החכמה אשר ממעל בראשונה צנועה היא אף אהבת שלום ומכרעת לכף זכות ואיננה עמדת על דעתה ומלאה רחמים ופרי טוב בלא לב ולב ובלי חנפה׃

¹⁸And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

¹⁸Le fruit de la justice est semé dans la paix par ceux qui recherchent la paix.

¹⁸ופרי הצדקה בשלום יזרע לעשי השלום׃
