¹My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons.

¹Mes frères, que votre foi en notre glorieux Seigneur Jésus-Christ soit exempte de toute acception de personnes.

¹אחי אל יהי משא פנים באמונתכם בישוע המשיח אדנינו אדון הכבוד׃

²For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing;

²Supposez, en effet, qu'il entre dans votre assemblée un homme avec un anneau d'or et un habit magnifique, et qu'il y entre aussi un pauvre misérablement vêtu;

²כי אם יבוא איש לבית כנסתכם וטבעת זהב על ידיו והוא לבוש לבשי מכלול וגם איש עני יבא שמה ובגדו מטנף׃

³and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool;

³si, tournant vos regards vers celui qui porte l'habit magnifique, vous lui dites: Toi, assieds-toi ici à cette place d'honneur! et si vous dites au pauvre: Toi, tiens-toi là debout! ou bien: Assieds-toi au-dessous de mon marchepied!

³ופניתם אל הלבוש לבשי מכלול ואמרתם לו שב לך הנה בטוב ולעני תאמרו עמד שם או שב פה מתחת להדם רגלי׃

⁴Do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

⁴ne faites-vous pas en vous-mêmes une distinction, et ne jugez-vous pas sous l'inspiration de pensées mauvaises?

⁴הלא בזאת נחלק לבכם והנכם שפטים בעלי מחשבות רעות׃

⁵Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world [to be] rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?

⁵Ecoutez, mes frères bien-aimés: Dieu n'a-t-il pas choisi les pauvres aux yeux du monde, pour qu'ils soient riches en la foi, et héritiers du royaume qu'il a promis à ceux qui l'aiment?

⁵שמעו אחי אהובי הלא בעניי העולם הזה בחר האלהים להיות עשירים באמונה וירשי המלכות אשר הבטיח לאהביו׃

⁶But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?

⁶Et vous, vous avilissez le pauvre! Ne sont-ce pas les riches qui vous oppriment, et qui vous traînent devant les tribunaux?

⁶ואתם הכלמתם את העני הלא העשירים הם העשקים אתכם והם הסחבים אתכם אל בתי דין׃

⁷Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which ye are called?

⁷Ne sont-ce pas eux qui outragent le beau nom que vous portez?

⁷הלא הם המגדפים את השם הטוב הנקרא עליכם׃

⁸Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:

⁸Si vous accomplissez la loi royale, selon l'Ecriture: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même, vous faites bien.

⁸הן בקימכם את המצוה המלכת על כלן כפי הכתוב ואהבת לרעך כמוך תיטיבו לעשות׃

⁹but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.

⁹Mais si vous faites acception de personnes, vous commettez un péché, vous êtes condamnés par la loi comme des transgresseurs.

⁹אולם אם תשאו פנים תחטאו במעשיכם והתורה תוכיחכם כעברים אותה׃

¹⁰For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one [point], he is become guilty of all.

¹⁰Car quiconque observe toute la loi, mais pèche contre un seul commandement, devient coupable de tous.

¹⁰כי איש אשר יקים את כל התורה ונכשל בדבר אחד הוא אשם אשם בכלם׃

¹¹For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

¹¹En effet, celui qui a dit: Tu ne commettras point d'adultère, a dit aussi: Tu ne tueras point. Or, si tu ne commets point d'adultère, mais que tu commettes un meurtre, tu deviens transgresseur de la loi.

¹¹כי האמר לא תנאף גם הוא אמר לא תרצח ואם אינך נאף ואתה רוצח היה נהיית לעבר התורה׃

¹²So speak ye, and so do, as men that are to be judged by a law of liberty.

¹²Parlez et agissez comme devant être jugés par une loi de liberté,

¹²כן דברו וכן עשו כאנשים העתידים להשפט על פי תורת החרות׃

¹³For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

¹³car le jugement est sans miséricorde pour qui n'a pas fait miséricorde. La miséricorde triomphe du jugement.

¹³כי אין חסד בדין לאשר לא עשה חסד והחסד יתגאה על הדין׃

¹⁴What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him?

¹⁴Mes frères, que sert-il à quelqu'un de dire qu'il a la foi, s'il n'a pas les oeuvres? La foi peut-elle le sauver?

¹⁴אחי מה יועיל לאיש אם יאמר כי יש לו אמונה ומעשים אין בו התוכל האמונה להושיעו׃

¹⁵If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food,

¹⁵Si un frère ou une soeur sont nus et manquent de la nourriture de chaque jour,

¹⁵אח או אחות אם יהיו בעירם ובחסר לחם יומם׃

¹⁶and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?

¹⁶et que l'un d'entre vous leur dise: Allez en paix, chauffez-vous et vous rassasiez! et que vous ne leur donniez pas ce qui est nécessaire au corps, à quoi cela sert-il?

¹⁶ואיש מכם יאמר אליהם לכו לשלום והתחממו ושבעו ולא תתנו להם די מחסור גופם מה תועיל זאת׃

¹⁷Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself.

¹⁷Il en est ainsi de la foi: si elle n'a pas les oeuvres, elle est morte en elle-même.

¹⁷ככה גם האמונה אם אין בה מעשים מתה היא בעצמה׃

¹⁸Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith apart from [thy] works, and I by my works will show thee [my] faith.

¹⁸Mais quelqu'un dira: Toi, tu as la foi; et moi, j'ai les oeuvres. Montre-moi ta foi sans les oeuvres, et moi, je te montrerai la foi par mes oeuvres.

¹⁸אך יאמר איש אתה יש לך אמונה ואני יש לי מעשים הראני נא את אמונתך מתוך מעשיך ואני אראך מתוך מעשי את אמוני׃

¹⁹Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder.

¹⁹Tu crois qu'il y a un seul Dieu, tu fais bien; les démons le croient aussi, et ils tremblent.

¹⁹אתה מאמין כי האלהים אחד הוא הטיבות גם השדים מאמינים בו ורעדים׃

²⁰But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren?

²⁰Veux-tu savoir, ô homme vain, que la foi sans les oeuvres est inutile?

²⁰ואתה איש בער התחפץ לדעת כי האמונה בבלי מעשים מתה היא׃

²¹Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon the altar?

²¹Abraham, notre père, ne fut-il pas justifié par les oeuvres, lorsqu'il offrit son fils Isaac sur l'autel?

²¹אברהם אבינו הלא במעשיו נצדק בהעלתו את יצחק בנו על המזבח׃

²²Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect;

²²Tu vois que la foi agissait avec ses oeuvres, et que par les oeuvres la foi fut rendue parfaite.

²²הנך ראה כי היתה האמונה עזרת למעשיו ומתוך המעשים השלמה האמונה׃

²³and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God.

²³Ainsi s'accomplit ce que dit l'Ecriture: Abraham crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice; et il fut appelé ami de Dieu.

²³וימלא הכתוב האמר והאמן אברהם ביהוה ותחשב לו לצדקה ויקרא אהב יהוה׃

²⁴Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.

²⁴Vous voyez que l'homme est justifié par les oeuvres, et non par la foi seulement.

²⁴הנכם ראים כי במעשים יצדק האיש ולא באמונה לבדה׃

²⁵And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?

²⁵Rahab la prostituée ne fut-elle pas également justifiée par les oeuvres, lorsqu'elle reçut les messagers et qu'elle les fit partir par un autre chemin?

²⁵וכן גם רחב הזונה הלא נצדקה במעשים באספה את המלאכים אל ביתה ותשלחם בדרך אחר׃

²⁶For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.

²⁶Comme le corps sans âme est mort, de même la foi sans les oeuvres est morte.

²⁶כי כאשר הגוף בלי נשמה מת הוא כן גם האמונה בלי מעשים מתה היא׃
