¹James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are of the Dispersion, greeting.

¹Jacques, serviteur de Dieu et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ, aux douze tribus qui sont dans la dispersion, salut!

¹יעקב עבד אלהים ואדנינו ישוע המשיח שאל לשלום שנים עשר השבטים הנפוצים׃

²Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations;

²Mes frères, regardez comme un sujet de joie complète les diverses épreuves auxquelles vous pouvez être exposés,

²אך לשמחה חשבו לכם אחי כאשר תבאו בנסינות שונים׃

³Knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience.

³sachant que l'épreuve de votre foi produit la patience.

³בדעתכם כי בחן אמונתכם מביא לידי סבלנות׃

⁴And let patience have [its] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.

⁴Mais il faut que la patience accomplisse parfaitement son oeuvre, afin que vous soyez parfaits et accomplis, sans faillir en rien.

⁴והסבלנות שלמה תהיה בפעלה להיותכם שלמים ותמימים ולא תחסרו כל דבר׃

⁵But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

⁵Si quelqu'un d'entre vous manque de sagesse, qu'il la demande à Dieu, qui donne à tous simplement et sans reproche, et elle lui sera donnée.

⁵ואיש מכם כי יחסר חכמה יבקשנה מאלהים הנותן לכל בנדיבה ובאין גערה ותנתן לו׃

⁶But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.

⁶Mais qu'il la demande avec foi, sans douter; car celui qui doute est semblable au flot de la mer, agité par le vent et poussé de côté et d'autre.

⁶רק יבקש באמונה ובבלי ספק כי בעל ספק דומה לגלי הים הסער והנגרש׃

⁷For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord;

⁷Qu'un tel homme ne s'imagine pas qu'il recevra quelque chose du Seigneur:

⁷והאיש ההוא אל ידמה בנפשו כי ישא דבר מאת יהוה׃

⁸a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways.

⁸c'est un homme irrésolu, inconstant dans toutes ses voies.

⁸איש אשר חלק לבו הפכפך הוא בכל דרכיו׃

⁹But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate:

⁹Que le frère de condition humble se glorifie de son élévation.

⁹אבל האח השפל יתהלל ברוממתו׃

¹⁰and the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

¹⁰Que le riche, au contraire, se glorifie de son humiliation; car il passera comme la fleur de l'herbe.

¹⁰והעשיר יתהלל בשפלותו כי יעבר כציץ החציר׃

¹¹For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass: and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.

¹¹Le soleil s'est levé avec sa chaleur ardente, il a desséché l'herbe, sa fleur est tombée, et la beauté de son aspect a disparu: ainsi le riche se flétrira dans ses entreprises.

¹¹כי זרח השמש בחמתו וייבש את החציר ויבל ציצו וחסד מראהו אבד כן יבול העשיר בהליכותיו׃

¹²Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which [the Lord] promised to them that love him.

¹²Heureux l'homme qui supporte patiemment la tentation; car, après avoir été éprouvé, il recevra la couronne de vie, que le Seigneur a promise à ceux qui l'aiment.

¹²אשרי האיש העמד בנסיונו כי כאשר נבחן ישא עטרת החיים אשר הבטיח יהוה לאהביו׃

¹³Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man:

¹³Que personne, lorsqu'il est tenté, ne dise: C'est Dieu qui me tente. Car Dieu ne peut être tenté par le mal, et il ne tente lui-même personne.

¹³אל יאמר המנסה האלהים נסני כי האלהים איננו מנסה ברע והוא לא ינסה איש׃

¹⁴but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.

¹⁴Mais chacun est tenté quand il est attiré et amorcé par sa propre convoitise.

¹⁴כי אם ינסה כל איש בתאות נפשו אשר תסיתהו ותפתהו׃

¹⁵Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.

¹⁵Puis la convoitise, lorsqu'elle a conçu, enfante le péché; et le péché, étant consommé, produit la mort.

¹⁵ואחרי כן הרתה התאות ותלד חטא והחטא כי נשלם יוליד את המות׃

¹⁶Be not deceived, my beloved brethren.

¹⁶Ne vous y trompez pas, mes frères bien-aimés:

¹⁶אל תתעו אחי אהובי׃

¹⁷Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.

¹⁷toute grâce excellente et tout don parfait descendent d'en haut, du Père des lumières, chez lequel il n'y a ni changement ni ombre de variation.

¹⁷כל מתנה טובה וכל מנחה שלמה תרד ממעל מאת אבי האורות אשר חלוף וכל צל שנוי אין עמו׃

¹⁸Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

¹⁸Il nous a engendrés selon sa volonté, par la parole de vérité, afin que nous soyons en quelque sorte les prémices de ses créatures.

¹⁸הוא בחפצו ילד אותנו בדבר האמת להיותנו כמו ראשית בכורי יצוריו׃

¹⁹Ye know [this], my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

¹⁹Sachez-le, mes frères bien-aimés. Ainsi, que tout homme soit prompt à écouter, lent à parler, lent à se mettre en colère;

¹⁹על זאת אחי אהובי יהי כל איש מהיר לשמע קשה לדבר וקשה לכעוס׃

²⁰for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

²⁰car la colère de l'homme n'accomplit pas la justice de Dieu.

²⁰כי כעס אדם לא יפעל צדקת אלהים׃

²¹Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

²¹C'est pourquoi, rejetant toute souillure et tout excès de malice, recevez avec douceur la parole qui a été plantée en vous, et qui peut sauver vos âmes.

²¹לכן הסירו מעליכם כל טנוף ותרבות רעה וקבלו בענוה את הדבר הנטוע בכם אשר יכל להושיע את נפשתיכם׃

²²But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.

²²Mettez en pratique la parole, et ne vous bornez pas à l'écouter, en vous trompant vous-mêmes par de faux raisonnements.

²²והיו עשי הדבר ולא שמעיו לבד לרמות את נפשכם׃

²³For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror:

²³Car, si quelqu'un écoute la parole et ne la met pas en pratique, il est semblable à un homme qui regarde dans un miroir son visage naturel,

²³כי האיש אשר רק שמע את הדבר ולא עשהו נמשל לאיש מביט את תאר הויתו במראה׃

²⁴for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

²⁴et qui, après s'être regardé, s'en va, et oublie aussitôt quel il était.

²⁴כי הביט אל מראהו וילך לו וברגע שכח מה תארו׃

²⁵But he that looketh into the perfect law, the [law] of liberty, and [so] continueth, being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing.

²⁵Mais celui qui aura plongé les regards dans la loi parfaite, la loi de la liberté, et qui aura persévéré, n'étant pas un auditeur oublieux, mais se mettant à l'oeuvre, celui-là sera heureux dans son activité.

²⁵אבל המשקיף בתורה השלמה תורת החרות ומחזיק בה אשר איננו שמע ושכח כי אם עשה בפעל אשרי האיש ההוא במעשהו׃

²⁶If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man's religion is vain.

²⁶Si quelqu'un croit être religieux, sans tenir sa langue en bride, mais en trompant son coeur, la religion de cet homme est vaine.

²⁶איש מכם אם ידמה להיות עבד אלהים ואיננו שם רסן ללשנו כי אם מתעה הוא את לבבו עבדתו אך לריק תהיה׃

²⁷Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

²⁷La religion pure et sans tache, devant Dieu notre Père, consiste à visiter les orphelins et les veuves dans leurs afflictions, et à se préserver des souillures du monde.

²⁷זאת העבודה הטהורה והברה לפני האלהים אבינו לבקר את היתומים והאלמנות בלחצם ולשמר את עצמו נקי מחלאת העולם׃
